We have only been at this school for 2 years so far, very impressed with the caliber of the pre-k and kindergarten teachers. They are supportive and nurturing but also have helped my son grow and mature and develop his faith in such a warm and positive atmosphere.

I've been impressed with how the older kids look out for the younger ones. How they know them by name and act as mentors.

The principal is receptive to new ideas and from hearing different perspectives on things. He is young and motivated to make changes that will positively impact the school community. The school advisory board advocates for what makes sense for the school and community. The leadership team seems to work very well.

Yes, the resource classroom is great and provides a great way for kids to learn and catch up at their own speed.

My son has been regularly getting homework since pre-k that is age appropriate. It doesn't require too much time, which for a young child can be difficult. I love that the school is teaching my son the skills to succeed from so young by getting used to having to be accountable for his work, for doing work that only increases his chances for success and creates a healthy and positive attitude about assignments.

My family's experience at Saint Martin's School has been excellent. We love the teachers and the emphasis on a sense of community. Sometimes the sheer number of people living in the Metropolitan DC area can lead to feeling distanced from those around you, but Saint Martin's promotes a feeling of inclusion and welcoming while offering an extremely diverse student body. Parents are required to volunteer at the school to further promote involvement and interaction in student life. The teachers are dedicated and many have extended tenure at the school. Our children could attend public school free of cost, but the value of the whole-child education at Saint Martins is well worth the financial cost. I would absolutely recommend this school to anyone who asked without hesitation!

Saint Martin Teachers and Administrators work together to establish a homework guideline that varies by grade level and student ability. When my son started school there in Kindergarten he would bring home one or two worksheets per evening. Now that he is in third grade he has several nightly items and over reaching monthly projects. This is a good blend of work, teaching him to manage his time wisely in order to complete his work on time.

The teachers at Saint Martins are one of the reasons that we attend! There is currently one class per grade level and the teacher commitment is phenomenal. They are always open and receptive to parent interaction and show genuine dedication to the school and the students - often organizing and participating in after school activities and making a point to be a part of the school community.

Character development in students is another reason that our family has chosen to attend Saint Martins School. Helping students to become productive members of society seems to be a primary goal. From the early grades forward students are taught and rewarded for showing compassion, empathy, integrity, and respect. I love that this school not only focuses on academics, but also on producing well rounded children. The emphasis on character is shared and modeled by staff and faculty.

The principal works in conjuncture with the priest and a School Advisory Board in order to set school policy. The current principal has an open door policy and is always interested in receiving parent feedback and reacting appropriately.

While Saint Martins teachers and staff are accommodating to students with different learning abilities, the school may not be the best choice for students in need of highly specialized learning aids or more intense intervention.

Saint Martins has established guidelines for handling bullying situations and has offered several extra-curricular programs (some sponsored by the City of Gaithersburg) to talk about bullying and how to prevent it.

We love this school for our son, we hesitated because we are not Catholic. The school was very welcoming to us and our son loves the teachers. He also really thrives in the structured environment that was lacking at the public school he attended prior.

The volume of homework prepares students for the rigors of a competitive high school. The teachers provide wonderful support if the kids have challenges with the content.

Good, strong, smart, dedicated teachers! Loving and kind too, which is so important and not always the case in bigger, public schools. We are allowed to show our faith, ANY FAITH, and our teachers can build real relationships with our kids based on mutual respect and values!

There is a lot of homework, but in the end, it's worth it! My kids complain a little, but they are so happy when they do well. They can always email their teachers for help and the response time is amazing!!
The homework also teaches them to work hard and be disciplined and that can never be a bad thing! :) I have also found that the curriculum is always ahead of their peers in public schools.

Honesty, Integrity, and fairness is at our core at SMS. It is wrapped up in our character building, in our faith, in our belief system and in our community service building! We are raising children with values, from our parents and our teachers!

St. Martin's is so much more than a school! It is a community and a family. We have been at SMS for 7 years and what brought us to the school was our faith, what sealed the deal on our decision to attend were the students! When we first arrived for the open house, the students gave us a tour of the school (which is still true today) and we were so impressed. They were articulate and mature and knowledgeable and we thought, "this is how we want our kids to be".

Everyone at our school knows each other to some degree, the parent involvement is amazing, the older kids mentor the younger kids, and the teachers are very hands on. The teachers really know all the students, it's an amazing place and we are so lucky to attend such a special school!

Furthermore, St. Martin's and the Archdiocese of Washington have very high academic standards and it show's year after year when our kids graduate and leave for high school more prepared than their peers and ready for AP classes. While the academics are tough, the teachers are ALWAYS there for the students. They get to know them well and they understand their different personalities, strengths and weaknesses and they are the first ones to rally behind them when they need help. They will not hesitate to reach out to parents when needed, so we have open communication and a good plan in place when a little extra help is in order.

I have two very different learners and SMS has been a nurturing learning environment for both of them!
If you want a good Catholic School that teaches about faith, community service, character building, has great academics, after school activities, dedicated teachers and so much more...than SMS is the place for you! AND, if you are not Catholic, but you still want ALL those things...SMS is STILL the place for you! This school is a small little gem that should not be overlooked! It is "top notch" in so many way and in this sometimes crazy world, you will not find a better home for your children and your family than St. Martin's School!

Five of my children have graduated from Saint Martin's, all of them arrived at high school ready to take on the challenges of advanced course work as a result of the excellent instruction provided by solid educators in both the elementary and middle school levels.

Additionally, Saint Martin's has been and continues to be a great place for children to grow up in the faith, and not view education and having a faith as contradictory. My children have learned to love serving the poor, being generous with stocking the pantry, they've learned to love learning, and they've learned that adults outside of their parents, care about the faith and practice it in their every day.

The trend in Homework is sometimes too much and sometimes not enough, so I like that Saint Martin's has, over the years always demanded of its students that they work after school to deepen their understanding, but never merely for the sake of proving, it's a tough school. The homework load I think is a necessary discipline, which teaches children that sometimes, you do have to go the extra mile. It's true in the work world, in relationships, in faith life, so it makes sense, it is also something that happens to children. I think, it is good for the children to have work and to sometimes, have more than they can easily rush through.

My child has been attending St. Martin's School for 5 years. He loves his teachers and feels very happy at this school. The curriculum challenges him and his teachers are always ready to help whenever he needs it. As a parent, I find the school to be an inviting place, very warm and welcoming. The teachers and staff are very supportive; it's obvious they love teaching and working at St. Martin's. The students are happy and respectful, and I feel much of that has to do with the school's emphasis on good morals, values, and helping those in need. I am very pleased with St. Martin's school.

I sent my child to Kindergarten at St. Martins and I just love this school. By the middle of his Kindergarten year he has learned to read, do basic math, type all the letters on a keyboard, speak some Spanish and other skills that cannot compare to public school. But what I am most impressed with is the community of the school, Sister Sharon, the principal, and other administrators really get to you know your child and your family. Unlike another private school that my daughter went to, the focus is purely on education and not how much money they can get out of you. A great deal of emphasis is put on respect, friendly behavior and doing good deeds for others in need thus the children are so polite and friendly. The school hosts many fun events for the family and by requiring each family to volunteer hours everyone really gets to know each other well. I should also note that we are not Catholic, and this has never been made an issue. The balance between academics and religion is just right and I feel that it is the religious side of the community that makes the parents and staff so open, friendly and respectful.

St. Martin's is an excellent school system which fosters academic excellence, technological advancements, sense of community, safety, sharing, belonging, and participation. As parents, we are asked to volunteer our time at the school so the tuition is very reasonable compared to other private schools.
