Saturday evening's annual Mary of Nazareth School Gala was yet another testament to the incredible things happening at our school every day. The more than 350 people in attendance proud to be a part of this great community and committed to its ongoing academic and spiritual excellence. We feel blessed to be led by Mr. Friel, our principal, and his assistant principal, Mrs. Schultz. Thanks, MON, for such an amazing evening!

I am the mother of two kids going to MoN. We are not even catholic and we love this school so much. The grounds, the principal, the sense of community, the involved parents, the safety in place .i mean really, its a top level school in an idyllic country side setting. Academics are very good- they keep all the kids on the spectrum engaged and challenged.

My family could not be happier with Mr. Friel and the staff he has assembled at Mary of Nazareth Catholic School. In addition to a rigorous curriculum steeped in the best of what the Catholic faith has to offer, Mr. Friel has ensured that there are ample opportunities for students to be recognized for their individual contributions to the community as well as find a place within the community to highlight their gifts and talents. Truly, MON is a home away from home for us! #TheresNoPlaceLikeMON!

As a current 8th grader about to graduate (and who has attended MoN since kindergarten), I have to say this school has been home for me and my classmates for years. I've grown up with many teachers who are still teaching effectively today and all the staff at MoN are caring and inclusive. The class I've grown up with is like family to me and we support each other through every test, midterm, and exam. I know MoN is home to some amazing students who will do amazing things in the future, and I'm proud to say I graduated from such a school. I strongly encourage any parents or families interested in Mary of Nazareth to consider coming here; I promise you will not be disappointed!

It was my catalyst for depression, anxiety, self loathing, and changing of faith. This school is a representation of corrupted religious morals. Take it from a previous student who was there since kindergarten until 8th grade.

When I was a student there, they treated those with learning disabilities like toddlers

Posted: November 20, 2018
The principal is fun and approachable on any issues. He loves surprising the students on Halloween and Spirit Day with his themes.

The teachers here are truly called to be here. They are engaging, kind, and supportive. There are specials teachers that help the students engage in a desire for STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math). Many of the teachers that have been here for 20 years or have taught for over 20 years.

There is a great resource team in place to help students break into smaller groups. The resource director helps middle school students with study skills and preparing for high school placement exams.

As a staff member and a parent, I witness daily the ways that Mary of Nazareth provides children with the best Catholic education possible one that prioritizes the values we share as a community. In the two short years our daughter has been at this school, weve watched as her teachers kindle her budding affinity for history and art, encourage her growing compassion for the needy, and nurture her relationship with God. My experience has shown that the tradition of excellence at Mary of Nazareth lies not only in its award-winning academic program, but also in its commitment to developing the unique gifts and talents of each individual child.

For the last 20 years we have been blessed to be part of the wonderful Mary of Nazareth School community! Our four children have experienced the kind, loving and nurturing environment that Mary of Nazareth has to offer. Through a challenging academic and faith based education our children continue to thrive as young adults. We have the amazing teachers, staff and leadership at Mary of Nazareth to thank for that. Fortunately our youngest child has another year and a half to participate in the robust sports and arts program among many activities offered at the best Catholic School in the Archdiocese of Washington.
Thank you Mary of Nazareth for being a part of the Feeney family.

It provides them with a rigorous curriculum that is taught by loving, caring teachers. The entire staff and school community is warm and welcoming. Everyone cares! The sports teams are excellent, and the clubs provide the kids to branch out in whatever they want to do. There is soo much school spirit! MON is the best - I am very grateful my children go here!!!

We have had kids enrolled at Mary of Nazareth for the past 8 years, and we have been very happy with our experience there. The community of parents is involved and helps to support the nurturing environment for the students and their families. The teachers are caring and passionate about their students, and regularly challenge their students to reach their full potential. Having the Catholic, Christian values that we teach our kids at home supported and taught at school is an important factor for us and is a huge reason we send our kids to the school. We are certain that the education they are receiving at Mary of Nazareth will impact them positively well into adulthood.

Many students come to Mary of Nazareth after having difficulties in other schools where they were made fun of, picked on or bullied because they learned differently. Because Mary of Nazareth can include faith in it's teaching and Religion classes, bullying is handled differently than in MCPS and is effectively dealt with. It is not tolerated and is stated in the school's Honor Code.
Posted: November 19, 2018
Mary of Nazareth is a Blue Ribbon School. This cannot be achieved without effective leadership. Input is received from teachers, parents, and the board. Every couple of years a plan is developed after seeking feedback from all sources to develop a strategic growth plan to carry the school into the future.
Posted: November 19, 2018
The teachers get to know each student and adjust their teaching to fit the needs of the students. There is a varied approach to learning so students receive the information in a variety of modes of learning.
Posted: November 19, 2018
The teachers give a tremendous amount of their time and resources to assisting students with learning challenges. They do a commendable job especially when considering they don't have the support of MCPS tax dollars to aid them.
Posted: November 19, 2018
The school instills Christian virtues in the lives of students. Teachers can include the example of Christ in their teaching and discipline. The school mission statement includes developing children for " lives of service rooted in faith, professed in creed, celebrated in the sacraments, lived in virtue and affirmed in prayer" The school community and each class organizes numerous service activities to give back to those in need.
Posted: November 19, 2018
Students receive homework to practice the skills they learn in class. It also prepares them for the homework level they will experience in high school. It is a balanced approach, allowing time for extra curricular activities and family time.
Posted: November 19, 2018
I have has a positive experience with Mary of Nazareth. Graduates are well prepared for high school, with many being accepted into MCPS magnet programs as well as honor and AP programs at Catholic Schools. Students in middle school have experience with mid-term and final exams, writing research papers, and public speaking. Graduates re now sending their own children to the school.

We have very much appreciated the community of Mary of Nazareth - rooted to an extent in a common faith-base but also in a spirit of volunteerism and high interest in success of the kids and the school. The principal makes it a priority to know every kid's name and we immediately felt welcome. As a military family, who will probably have to move again before the kids are able to get through an entire K-8 curriculum, I feel confident that they are getting a strong foundation in elementary school education that will carry forward wherever we land next.
Posted: November 18, 2018
this is one of the reasons we opted into Mary of Nazareth -- the routine opportunity for students who needed help to get that help in small groups or to have students who are more advanced work on more advanced math or reading or other skills in small groups.

Overall, a home for my children. When they graduate they consider their friends and the teachers their family. They have excelled in high school and feel very well prepared compared to their peers from other schools. The younger ones look forward to school every day. Also, the diversity chart does not represent the school - we are much more diverse than the chart suggests, including many international families.

Being part of the wonderful community of Mary of Nazareth has been a wonderful experience.
MON is an excellent school, its environment is extraordinary, more than a school is a great family.
The communication between teachers and parents is very good. The administration is always kind and willing to listen and give solutions.
For parents who love being involved in the school, it offers many opportunities for volunteering in many activities throughout the school year.
The values instilled at home become strong at Mary of Nazareth.
But the most special thing is, the strong teaching of God's love.
My daughters do love Mary of Nazareth and I do love too.

MoN features extensive communication in house enabling teachers and other staff to monitor situations identified by previous members and prevent continuation and escalation.
Posted: November 14, 2018
The leadership is involved and can often be seen roaming the halls and interacting with students and faculty. They can also be seen at extracurricular events interacting with parents and other stakeholders.
Posted: November 14, 2018
I am one, so I may be biased, but the teachers are effective again because of their communication. The teachers meet biweekly to discuss best practices and students who may need additional help.

This school has proven an excellent place to work. The community is supportive, and they are appreciative of the efforts the faculty put in to help their students.

He is interested in the safety of each child. Mr. Friel is fun-spirited and enjoys spirit day and Halloween. He is willing to jump from the ceiling to show his MON pride!

I strongly think that all of the teachers at Mary of Nazareth adapt to the needs of each student. Mary of Nazareth has a resource program that helps students that need extra support. Mary of Nazareth has four leveled math groups from grades 4-8. Mary of Nazareth's teachers help students both before and after school. Teachers just do not teach, but teach with warm and kindness. MON teachers want their children to succeed. MON teachers raise the standards for each child and pushes each child to reach their educational goals. The teachers at Mary of Nazareth are kind, loving, caring, and just so much fun.

Mary of Nazareth teaches to each student. Students are placed with teachers who teach in different teaching styles and have flexible seating. Mary of Nazareth teachers teach using hands on activities and they have a fantastic STEAM Lab. Each grade has three reading groups per grade and four math groups in grades 4-8. Mary of Nazareth also has chromebooks and ipads to help students learn in the 21st century.

Students begin their day with prayer and end each day with prayer. Students are filled with virtues daily.

I feel that students need to review on a daily basis in order to fully master what they are learning in school. I also strongly feel that students need to learn how to balance schoolwork and extra activities on a daily basis. I think Mary of Nazareth challenges the students to reach their fullest potential.

My experience at Mary of Nazareth is pleasant, kind, warm, and very helpful. First of all, when you approach the school, you know that safety is their number one concern. You may not enter the school without being buzzed in the door. The front doors are safety proof. Then the two secretaries at the front office are kind and so helpful. They answer the phone with smiles on their face. It is simply amazing how two people can stay so happy all day long! Then the students are smiling as they walk from class to class in their uniforms. Kindness just radiates from their happy bodies! Mary of Nazareth is such a wonderful community full of God, happiness, and rigor!

Our experience at the school has been excellent. The faculty and staff are great, the school facilities and grounds are beautiful, and the school prepares the students both intellectually and spiritually for high school and beyond. The school is also constantly evolving, as evidenced by the new STREAM program. We had one child start in kindergarten and graduated in 8th grade, and have two other children that started in preschool and are now in 6th and 8th grade, respectively. We have been a part of the school community for 14 years. It was the best decision we made for our children and would highly recommend the school to everyone.

Instead of being reactive, teachers and administration work together to identify potential conflicts and be proactive in students encounters. Teachers take extra time to get to know their students outside of the classroom which makes students feel comfortable sharing their concerns.

Mary of Nazareth has made each of my 3 kids more confident and excited about learning. In our public school my kids sat all day and had worksheets thrown at them. Here they have multiple recesses and are encouraged to move in the classrooms. They bring home books, so I can help them if they are confused. The sense of community is also really strong and we feel it as a family! We feel blessed to have found MoN!

This is our 10th year at Mary of Nazareth (MoN). Both of my children started attending MoN in kindergarten. They are both well prepared academically and socially. My daughter (class of 2016) went on to attend a competitive high school in the area without any difficulty getting in and/or adjusting. My son is currently in 3rd grade. The school is filled with a wonderful, committed, community of parents and faculty, as well as a tremendous principal. MoN strives for its students to excel academically and to live ethically. Beautiful school grounds, up-to-date technology, and nurturing, supportive staff. Mary of Nazareth is not just a school for our children, it is our community.

Our children have thrived, and we found a wonderful community in the school's families.

Leadership at this school is effective.
If you think groveling to the highest bidder, or board member, the school is most certainly effective in that sense.
Posted: September 18, 2017
Poor overall experience so far. Hoping leadership changes are made that can improve the underlying issues that the majority in the "community" turn a blind eye to.
Posted: September 18, 2017
Teachers at this school are effective.
The teachers are extremely effective, so effective that they leave for better opportunities. The turnover of teachers is tough, but understandable.

Posted: June 25, 2017
Bad, I would not recommend because of the snobbery starting from the office staff. Teachers act superior and don't foster mutual respect. Academics are lacking, writing skills leading up to 6th grade are below for private school standards.PE is a joke, takes longer to settle 30 kids in the gym than for them to actually do their physical activities. Art is ok, always geared to creating a class project to be sold at the annual auction.Science as in actual hands-on science is non-existent. Values instilled in children do not correspond to what Catholic values should be, but then values come from home and that's how kids act, pretentious, unkind and clicky...
Posted: March 2, 2017
My son's class had a bullying problem in 4th grade and it was dealt with effectively.
Posted: March 2, 2017
While MoN does not have the resources for students with more serious learning issues, there are many supports in place from K-8. I have known many children (including my own) who have benefited from this support.

Excellent principal - open to feedback, goes the extra mile for individual students, effective administrator. I hope he stays a long time!

Catholic ideals of service, love of neighbor, and faith are intertwined in everything at this school.
Posted: March 2, 2017
Posted: March 2, 2017
Homework is mostly practicing what has been learned that day, mostly math - important to review those skills to solidify learning. Teachers are receptive when asked to adjust for a particular student.
Posted: March 2, 2017
We have been at this school for 11 years and will be here for quite a bit longer. We were happy from the beginning - it was a welcoming, spirited place with tons of parent involvement. We have seen much growth and change over the years - the principal and administration is attentive to the needs of the community and adjusts as needed.
Technology has grown incredibly as has the academic and extracurricular offerings. Teachers have changed jobs within the school when things were not going well - always with a positive outcome - happier, more effective teacher and student.
My children have been loved, have been held to high academic and moral standards, and have felt at home in this school - from preschool to 8th grade. They are ready to fly by the time they leave - my oldest has been very successful and is one of the most prepared students in the Catholic high school she attends.
One of my children had a lot of difficulty but the teachers were unaware of it. As soon as we made the principal and teachers aware, he was given the help he needed. The resource teacher helped him understand his learning style and the principal went out of his way to help. In 2 1/2 years my son has gone from someone who never felt good enough to a confident student who excels in all areas - and even earned an academic scholarship to high school. I know that he will adjust well to the rigors of high school because of this experience at MoN.
Every school has its ups and downs - just as in life. Children who go through MoN will experience a safe, structured environment filled with adults who want the best for them.

After nine years at MoN my daughter will be graduating in May and saying good bye to the place she has considered her second home since she was in kindergarten.
MoN's high academic standard have fostered in her a love of learning and critical thinking as well as social skills and personal responsibility that, along with a lot of hard work have earned her acceptance to the St Johns College High De La Salle Scholars Program.
Over the years she has also learned many valuable life lessons; it's better to put aside differences when conflict arises, what it means to be a good friend and how to get along with people she doesn't always like. She's also learned that everybody doesn't always get along, everything doesn't always go her way, teachers aren't always in the best moods and sometimes lunch isn't as good as she hoped it would be. And that's ok! (Lessons I wish I had learned when I was young)
I am also grateful for support our family received from the principle and administrative staff when we were going through a difficult period.
God Bless MoN!

It was a a okay school. The art and music programs at the school are weak. There is only PE two days a week. They could also work on the lunches. Bottom line the school needs to work on the art and music programs at the school and they need to work on the lunches.

Our family has been at MON for 7 years and I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions that we have ever made for our children. The school has a top notch rigorous academic curriculum. It's a great environment for high performing students. Most importantly though my children love their school and we have made great friends there.
Posted: August 27, 2015
The staff suffers no consequences for lying. No discipline for kids who steal from the other children or bully the other children. A lot of students only last a few years before they get fed up with the Principal. The values being taught to the children do not meet core "Catholic Values". Many parents have had their children struggle after leaving due to poor academic requirements.
Posted: August 26, 2015
Academics are very weak and a lot of parents have had to hire tutors to get their kids up to speed when they enter high school.
Posted: August 26, 2015
Students that steal, cheat and lie are protected while kids who defend themselves are severely punished for it. The discipline policies there defy logic and reason.
Posted: April 10, 2015
We have been extremely pleased with our experience at MoN. We have sent multiple children, some still attending and some recent graduates. The recent graduates were extremely well prepared, receiving exactly what we expected . . . a rigorous academic challenge within a deeply faith filled environment. We have found the parent community to be both supportive and demanding, a subtle combination that holds the school to a high standard. The principal is very visible. He knows his students and families well and works hard to meet their needs. He leads a talented and committed faculty. We have and will continue to recommend MoN highly to families seeking a strong Catholic education and foundation for their children

My child won't be returning in the fall. Academics is lax, extracurricular activities are nonexistent and the amount of time they get for lunch, besides the poor quality of liunch, is unconscionable. There's a huge bullying and theft problem there which the administration has done nothing about for two years now. There's a lot of favoritism where a few heavily involved parents seem to run the school. Many of the parents have their little cliques and aren't receptive to anyone outsiders. Being around the parents is like being in high school again but the popular kids are really running the school. The principal lied to me about a problem with one of the students stealing from my child. He's very weak and bends to the rule of a couple heavily involved parents. Moreover, there are ALOT of kids who are not paying to go there who have behavioral problems. Save your money and send your child to a different school.
Posted: February 10, 2015
Very disappointed with the education but most importantly with the administration. One reviewer stated , "the Principal knew every kid by name", that must have been the only thing the guy was doing during my children's tenure. The 10 Commandments tell us Catholics that "we shall not bear false witness against your neighbor". I guess that doesn't if you are MoN administration.

Mary of Nazareth School is a true example of a Catholic Education that not only has helped me mold my children to be conscientious people, but has also challenged my children academically and fulfilled them socially. My older son was shy and lacked confidence. His teachers and the community have brought him out of his shell and he has thrived. My family has been a part of the Mary of Nazareth Community for 7 years and we have loved every moment. I believe that the teachers are skilled and caring about all of their students. The Principal has a knack of knowing every child by name and letting each child know that he is there for them while at the same time requiring respect for all. Sending our children to Mary of Nazareth has been one of the best decisions my family has ever made and I have recommended the school to all who are interested.

I am a student at MO and let me just say I am so glad I am leaving this school. A lot of these teachers are power hungry. This school only cares about your money. The more you have the more things you get. The more your family is involved the more the people like you. And some kids here are bully's. They will act like your friends and the minute you leave they talk smack about you. But then again that is the same at every school. Academic wise it's a pretty good school. But extracurriculars are awful. There are only sports there isn't many music and art clubs. There is only a choir but they don't do much. There is only on art class a week. That is not sufficient at all. And the gym classes are not very helpful. We only have two a week while other schools have it everyday. So when we get to high school some kids won't be fit for the level of gym class. And don't get me started on the lunches. Some lunches shouldn't even be legal okay? Overall my nine years here have been sorta good.

I'm a student here and here's my review. The school may seem great at first but do you want to see a student's review or a parent's review? MoN doesn't offer as much as other schools do. I'm not really into sports and there's no Performing Arts program here! Also, the school is more nicer to the richer families. Not to mention that some of the students here are rude and immature. Because of a few students in my grade, I'm unable to receive the full education my parents are paying for! Education wise, the school's pretty good. But don't even get me started about the lunches! Some of these lunches aren't even legit! So basically, the school should offer more programs (instead of more sports!) and be more open to some of the poorer families instead of just the richer ones. And work on the school lunches!

I am a former student of the school and have nothing good to say about it. There is a HUGE bullying problem at the school, which is something I was a victim of. Nothing was done about it, because the principal ignored me and my family every time we tried to tell anyone there was a problem. The school also seems to show favor towards kids in families who are try tied into the school. I would never recommend this school, and I can honestly say that leaving the school was one of the best things that ever happened to me.
