Do not enroll past the preschool. Unfortunately with the massive turnover in staff, the administration does not know what they are doing. All of the middle school staff left last year and after this year majority of the elementary staff is leaving. Current students and families are leaving and enrollment is suffering. There is a reason.

I have been so thankful for our experience at Lucy School. With 3 kids, weve been there 8 years and in all programs - pre-k/k, elementary, and middle school. I cant say enough good things about the teachers - they are the heart and soul of the community. The physical environment, the arts integration, the after-school activities, and the whole community (parents/families, admin, & teachers) so special and amazing. It is the most special place, where my kids are supported and valued, they embody kindness, generosity, and love for one another and the planet. Lucy Schools curriculum integrates art into everything and has visiting teachers/artists that expose them to the world - it is magical and wonderful. For families ahead of ours who have gone through middle school, they report that their children are well prepared for high school, so the kids are not only prepared academically but they have had an opportunity to be in a peaceful and loving environment to prepare them emotionally as well. I'm so grateful they've had this school environment to learn and grow.

Lucy School is one of a kind. They have exceptional teachers, and the administrators are absolutely wonderful to work alongside. The campus and the environment is very peaceful, and the children flourish in academics. Art, music, drama, outside exploration, secure and safe facilities and a beautiful approach to nature based programs. Highly recommend taking a tour!

The Lucy School has been a perfect fit for our children in elementary and middle school. The small class sizes enhance individual learning and needs. The style of process over product is refreshing with all of the projects and collaborative time they spend really helps students understand concepts. My children love going to school each day where their history lessons come to life through drama reenactments and they get to explore the natural world around them. Our children have grown emotionally and socially through the whole child focus that teachers at Lucy School take with the students. We love the amount of time they have outdoors for play or learning which enhances their ability to focus in the classroom too.

Lucy School is awesome and has recently become an independent school.. Academics and arts are strong. The review that was negative about the new head (in his second year) is untrue. He is engaged, supportive and caring, and in fact has made policies that support only those children whose needs can be accomodated, including gifted and artistic children. Teachers are offered healthcare benfits and competitive salaries. The enironment is second to none. Highly recommend.

We have been so happy with Lucy School. My child is active and high energy, and the generous amount of outdoor time and nature play has been great for him. The campus is lovely, as are the classrooms and facilities. The focus on arts and creativity makes learning fun for him, rather than a chore. Weve loved all of the teachers that hes had.

Lucy School used to be a great school until the turnover at the head of school position. In 2025 they're on their 3rd in 4 years and the current one is awful. He lies to parents, keeps troubled kids enrolled and discipline-free to ensure tuition money stays, and overworks and underpays teachers who can't even get health insurance. The teachers are largely great people but turnover regularly due to the low pay and demanding requirements. I would not recommend it for beyond prek/k years. Such a shame, used to have a great community and culture there.

As a mother of two elementary school-aged kids, I cannot express enough how grateful I am for Lucy School. From the moment we joined the community, I have felt my kids are truly cared for. The small class sizes allow for individualized attention, and the teachers take the time to understand each childs personality and learning style.

What sets Lucy School apart for me is its deep commitment to creativity. Through art, music, or imaginative play, my children are encouraged to think freely, explore their interests, and express themselves in ways standard classrooms often dont allow. They come home every day excited to share what theyve learnednot just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

Its a nurturing, joyful environment where learning feels magical. Im so thankful for the love and thoughtfulness the staff bring to their work every day.

I would recommend Lucy for preschool. However, there is a major lack of education. My daughter once told me we didnt do math today because no one wanted to
If you are looking to put your child in a private school that will set them up for success for high school, this is not for you. Teachers are fabulous. There is however a TON of turn over. In the two years we were there, they had three head of schools. Many different people in the front office. Communication is poor.
The best way to describe this place is an expensive way to homeschool your child with no say in the education piece. Def not the school for everyone!

Incredible school. If the Montessori approach is what you are looking for there is no better school in the area. Students are actively engaged, the environment is learning and respect based with many areas of interest for students to pursue.
We have been thrilled with the school, the teachers and our childs learning.

After being disappointed in this school we regretfully have decided to go with the public system. Concerns with bullying were not addressed in a satisfactory manner. When I let the school know I would be leaving negative reviews they threatened to sue me ( in writing no less).

We fell in love with the beautiful, sweeping grounds of Lucy School and were wooed by the wholesome, eco-friendly aesthetic of the facilities. This could have been an ideal, long-term fit for our child, who we'd planned to keep enrolled all through Middle School. However, the incompetence and greed of the administrative staff during their handling of the COVID crisis peeled the curtain back for us and let us see the school for what it really is: a for-profit cash grab that doesn't value its families as much as it does their tuition checks. The school's owner and financial "manager" (and I use that term loosely, because handling financial transactions via snail mail with absolutely no digital paper trail in the year 2020 is inexcusable, especially considering the hefty price tag of tuition) has no business running this function. He's disorganized, rude, and antithetical to everything that this school claims to stand for and teach its students. His treatment of families is not unique to ours, unfortunately, and goes completely unchecked by the rest of the administrative staff. It's a toxic environment and not something we were willing to put up with considering how much we paid to be there.

Parents are required to sign a contract by the beginning of April for the following entire school year which you *cannot* get out of. If something happens and you don't end up going to Lucy School, you are charged for the *entire* year's tuition, unless the class fills up. In our case, we had two grandmothers die and we sold and bought a house and moved, all within a few months, but when we pleaded the case, they didn't budge an inch or a dollar on requiring the whole year's tuition. We told them we weren't coming back on the first of August, more than a month before school was to start, and their "saving a spot" for our son until then wasn't costing them any money, as his class hadn't filled up, but they claim that they have to bank on everyone's tuition that early in the season, as it all gets allocated for expenses that outstrip their income. Now we're out about six and a half thousand dollars, unless his class fills up, though I don't know what the impetus for them would be to tell us if it did, as they already have our money. I think it's too much to require families to know exactly what they are doing from next fall to spring five months in advance, and then not to account for any wiggle room for special circumstances.

The preschool and kindergarten approach, with respect emphasized at all times and the kids given a lot of opportunity for free play and access to nature, was charming to me. I loved the no-homework. The day begins with 'singing meeting', which I loved as well. The teachers really knew how to respectfully guide children through the day.

Programming is amazing at this school. Teachers and aides give it a 110% effort and the specials are fantastic, not to mention the outdoor time and opportunities for free play. Three star rating is for: rigid drop-off policy and limited communication from/access to teachers.

Rigid drop off: parents are not allowed to walk child in, unless you are paying for before care and coming in early - suggesting that it's more of a parking issue than a "its best for the kids" issue as the school suggests. Also, several parents appear to be given special approval - I have seen multiple parents walk kids in - one dad in particular.

Limited communication from teachers: it's a challenge to get anything daily or weekly that is specific to your kid - the "weekly plans" email does go out regularly, but only addresses what the kids will be doing (which frequently changes last minute). Often the teacher walks out to get child at drop off, or brings child to car, but they are in hustle mode and make it clear that it's not a good time to talk. The administration needs to come up with a way to provide parents better access. It is a private school after all, and most parents who choose this kind of environment (and pay for it!) want additional information beyond parent teacher conferences once per quarter.

We couldn't be happier! Such an amazing place for my kids to attend. The academics are very strong but presented to the children in such a creative way that learning is fun and the kids actually enjoy school. Outdoor time, after school programs, extra curriculars, social events all have been excellent. The best part about Lucy School is that my kids are respected and able to learn and grow in a safe environment.

My child loves Lucy School. The Preschool Program is absolutely outstanding and the teachers in this program are exceptional. I believe that early childhood education is the most important step one can take to help ensure success in K-12 and beyond. My school is Lucy School in Middletown, MD. Wow! Such a great green environment to have my daughter blossom in so many ways. Her interpersonal, language, reading, and math skills have her excited to go to school each day. She talks about and demonstrates what she learns and continues to learn at home. She really thrives on outside play twice a day and our conversations are frequently on nature-she demonstrates her innate respect for all living things. Lucy School is a great fit for my daughter as well as my husband and me.

Lucy School is a wonderful community of teachers, parents, and students. Our daughters have flourished there over the last several years. The 17 acres are beautiful, complete with a waterfall, woods area, organic garden, and pond. Children are encouraged to be peaceful, be good stewards of the earth, and the arts are used to supplement the curriculum.

My children have attended the public schools in our area as well as Lucy School. In their words "at Lucy School, Im having so much fun I don't realize Im learning the bookwork". As a parent, I love that my child spends substantial time each day outside, in nature, expelling physical energy. I have 2 children who attend school there right now, and they come home each day fueled by a love of learning and excited to continue learning at home. Today my 3rd grader came home wanting to look up owl sounds on the computer. Last week she wanted to make signs to reduce littering in our area. My children are passionate learners, and attribute this to the environment they experience at their school!

My daughter struggled with the transition to preschool but when we enrolled her at Lucy School she thrived. She has been lucky to have had very good and caring teachers. I agree with a previous comment about a lack of transparency however the school has worked with us to provide financial assistance and I believe the director tries to work hard with each family on a case by case basis. I've talked with other families that feel the academics are too light and others that have thought they were a bit stringent for pre-schoolers. We have found it to be just right for our daughter but I can see why it might not be a good fit for some. The campus is absolutely beautiful and I love all the time the kids spend outdoors.

Magical. Lucy School isn't just a place to go for learning. The teachers are inspiring. I believe their enthusiasm and joy of teaching is genuine. They know & love my kid. It is a giant family, and like any parent knows: the best learning comes not from flashcards but from doing. In preschool, my daughter's class was weighing and graphing the amount of trash/compost they produced on a daily basis, and predicting future outcomes. One lesson involved scientific method, math, weights and measures, ecology and plant science. Then they drew pictures of the compost! Amazing integration. I've always found the administration and staff easily accessible. If anything, I feel like they should have more time available for themselves. Never has it taken more than 24 hours for anyone to get back to me.

We have been at Lucy School for a few years and our family is extremely pleased with our experience. Teachers are extremely committed to meeting the needs of each individual child and are very responsive when we have questions or concerns. The emphasis on the arts and environmental curriculum is well organized and executed well. Our children have always looked forward to going to school and are excited about what they are learning, whether it be in math, language arts, art, music, drama... The campus is beautiful and when contemplating preschool or elementary school options, setting up a tour at Lucy School should be on top of the list.

My children love the Lucy School. They are engaged and excelling academically. They love to run in the fields and play in the woods. They excitedly tell of art projects and adventures in drama, and sing their songs from school. Their teachers show great care for the students, with effective classroom instruction as well as attention and support for students' social development. This is our second, wonderful, year at Lucy School. I have always found the director, the administration, and the teachers to be accessible, attentive, and responsive to any issues I have raised, questions I have asked, or special circumstances that I needed help with. Our children are happy and thriving at the Lucy School.

There are many wonderful things about this school. The teachers are overall excellent, the educational approach is superior to the "prep for the test" orientation of public school these days, and the facility is gorgeous. My children have largely enjoyed their time here. But. there are some major problems. The director is completely tuned out and never present, and yet won't delegate authority; the school feels like it has no direction and getting basic issues addressed -- like problems in aftercare or even getting an email answered - is a nightmare. There is no transparency: no board, no public budget, no meaningful parent involvement in crucial decisions. We are not told when our kid is hit by another or gets hurt while playing. The focus on "sustainability" is ecological and not social: expensive buildings that can be shown off, but underpaid staff who have no benefits. In short, it is billed as a cutting-edge school but in many respects is extremely traditional and authoritarian. It does spill over into the children's experience. We're moving on.

Lucy School knows how children learn best and prepares them more for the real world than anything else. Student-centered teaching at it's best, helps my daughter learn to LOVE learning and be inquisitive of the world around her. She is learning how to work cooperatively with others, and think critically. Public schools and their large classes do not afford students the vital 1:1 time children need my child gets loads of it at Lucy School. It is worth every penny we spend for tuition; by far the greatest investment we could make in our daughters education. It is in these formative years that she learns to love school, learning about the world and finding her place in it. We are so fortunate to have Lucy School as an option ~ we could not be happier!

Excellent , non-traditional and unique learning experience. The Director is an academic visionary and understands the role of creativity and imagination in childhood development. At the Lucy School children learn much more than reading, writing, and arithmatic. Children are encouraged to be independant thinkers and to express their personality and emotions through art, dance, drama, and music. Classes are small and my 5 year old received exceptional, personalized attention. The teachers at Lucy School truly love their profession and make sure each child's experience is positive and well rounded. Lucy School introduces children to other cultures through special guests, story telling, and fun events. The farm like location of Lucy School is peaceful and quiet which is refreshing and unexpected for any school. I consider Lucy School to be the top school in Frederck County and the ideal natural setting to faciliate learning and development. I thank Vicky and Chris for being forward thinking in their vision of what learning should be and determined to make that vision a reality for so many children. The Lucy School should be the leader in how we educate our youth.

I Love Lucy! Ms. Vickie Brown what a wonderful school you have created! Lucy School makes me wish I were 5 again to start my school life there, instead of my parochial school with 30+ kids, uniforms, and Nuns. Everyone I have met from Lucy School has been one of the nicest people I have ever met, everyone! That is an amazing staff you have assembled! You and they are something very very special and I look forward to having both of our daughters attend Lucy School each year you offer classes for their grade levels. We love the arts based concept, it is weery inspiring in its simplicity. Driving our two girls to school everyday is easy due to this program. At bedtime each night they ask "Is it a school day tomorrow"? They look forward to going to school, and I look forward to them describing their day in the Big Red Barn, or what they saw at the pond, waterfall, where ever they went, or did in math or schience. This is education, creating an interest in learning by seeing the world up close at an early age. Thank you very very much for creating such a WONDERFUL, and SUCCESSFUL school for children! Very disappointed with this school. There is not enough structure which does not adequately prepare students for traditional schooling. Also, the EXTREMELY child-centered activities do not challenge students as they are TOO free to CHOOSE everything!! It is unique idea and many of the students and staff have fun...but not a very practical reality for real learning.

Lucy School is a truly unique learning experience for children. I wouldn't think of sending my daughter anywhere else!! The children get to be children while all the while learning what they need to but in a different way. There are no endless worksheets. They are constantly outside observing nature, learning about different parts of the world through drama, expressing themselves in music and movement and so much more.Learning is made fun and exciting. My daughter has developed such empathy for her classmates and a creative approach to problem solving all thanks to lucy school. This is the way school should be. I feel so very lucky that my daughter has had the chance to attend Lucy School!! I know that her life has been enriched socially and academically by this wonderful school and she will carry this with her all her school years.

A LOVE TO LEARN - Lucy Schools #1 Characteristic is That Learning Is Made Fun! Two of my kids went to this school and enjoyed it thoroughly! Their unique curriculum and facility is perfect for kids Pre K thru 3rd grade! This School set my kids up to make learning fun & exciting. This fact becomes perfectly clear when they transition into another school, and you will be thankful they attended Lucy. They made many friends as well that continue on to this day. I figured this out this when my kids went to elementry shools and continued to excell. The staff, teachers, parents, and owners truely care about the succes of each student.

The Lucy School Difference - that's what I call it when people talk about how my 9- and 12-year-old approach school projects with eagerness and curiosity not common in their peers, or make up songs on the spot that you would swear they heard on the radio, or problem solve with creativity and confidence. I worried about the transition to public school with my older one, but the format of the school mattered much less than the joy he has in learning, so it was fairly seamless. Now in Middle School, he is considered a gifted writer and advanced in all academic subjects. And he still loves school. The younger one was not as academically advanced and has reading challenges -- did Lucy School not prepare him? Turns out that learning to love stories was the saving grace for him. He WANTED to read, PRETENDED to read, PLAY ACTED constantly and IS NOW READING just like or better than his peers . . . because he can't get enough stories. Other children in his classroom with similar learning issues gave up two years ago, but the driving desire to engage with stories that was fostered at Lucy School pulled him through to success years after he left the Big Red Barn. Lucy School is awesome.

I was skeptical about the Lucy Shool's non-traditional approach to education. (where is the letter of the day? How do you "invite" a child to literacy? How does dramatic play translate to higher placement for my bright child??) but our daughter loved the place and loved the people (as did I) and we took the risk that it was the best place for her. 10 years and 3 kids later, I get it!! Did they trick us into academic excellence? Because while the kids were observing animal habitats, studying Miro, acting out Greek dramas, engineering elaborate ice structures, and incorporating music and rhythm into math lessons, they somehow worked their way to advanced classes when we switched them to the public school system. This school is somethng special. I simply can't say enough good things about this wonderful school. My children have soared academically, socially, and personally thanks in no small part to this school.

Unique school - wish its philosophy were the norm. Lucy School uses a combination of innovative educational methods with a few tried-and-true (but apparently forgotten) favorites - like play and outside time. My children flourished at Lucy School and beyond - in public school, in group settings, with close friends. The skills they learned went beyond academics (though those were great) and helped them become life-long learners who know how to think and solve problems, whether those problems are in math class, with friends, or bigger issues about humanity and the earth. I often wonder whether Lucy School could be duplicated in a public school, and if its philosophies could become the norm. While I think that some strategies could be incorporated I'd guess that the intense one-on-one time with a teacher who knows every student and can focus on *that child* is hard to do in a larger setting. I'm just glad my kids had this opportunity when they were young; it's served them well as they have gotten older.

Our son has been at the Lucy School since he was in the 3-year old program and is currently in the second grade. The school has provided him with a solid academic foundation and exposure to the arts in a caring and supportive environment. Young children get still get to experience the outdoors at this school--trees, grass, dirt and more. His teachers have been excellent throughout the years. When compared to our son's friends that go to good Frederick County public schools, his academic, plus creative and analytical thinking skills are more advanced. We looked at other private schools for second grade, and they all assessed him above grade level. This is a good school that has produced tangible superioir results.

Lucy School is a unique, personalized, beautiful, challenging, comfortable place where children are children and are treated as such. They are assessed daily on skills because the teachers really know the students, not because they are given a standardized test. SInce the teachers know the students so well, due to honest and geniune care for the students as well as class size, no one falls behind. Students are given the opportunity to thirve inside and outside of the classroom, incorporating nature to learn as well. The arts based program is amazing! They "traveled" west with the westward expansion, building a covered wagon, and hiking through the woods in the "wagon" (made of rope). They dramatized the movement, working as a "family" on their way west. The children built and drew maps of their journey, they learned about tools used how families lived at that time. The children learned music of the era and to celebrate having "arrived" in the west, all families celebrated with a barn dance with Mr. Slim! Such a comprehensive way to learn, and so hands on! You can't learn this way from a book only or on a chalk board. This is living the learning.

Quality early education is based on multiple factors in my opinion - strong staff, small class sizes, academics which foster critical, analytical, and independant thinking, creativity and expression, room to move and time to question the world around. Lucy School has all of these. My children have attended Lucy for both preschool and elementary, and I have been pleased with both their academic and social growth. While the public schools in our area are quite good, you can't beat the individual attention each child receives in a class of 11 students per teacher. For me great schools are more than just great academics, and at Lucy School there is a tremendous sense of community between staff and families. Creativity and expression are fostered. I know we will miss Lucy when we go but my children will have a love of learning and strong educational base which will last.
