I would not recommend this school to any parent. My child has gone through so much stress, anxiety, and emotional damage because of their experiences here. The bullying is a huge problem, and it feels like it is not taken seriously enough.

It also seems like some teachers show favoritism toward the popular kids while other students get ignored. Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and respected at school, and unfortunately that has not been our experience.

Please think carefully before sending your child here. I wish I had known what we were getting into before enrolling my kid.

Our experience at Urbana Middle was heartbreaking. Our bright, curious, and neurodivergent child, who once loved learning, ended up deeply traumatized by relentless bullying—including sexual harassment—that went unaddressed by the school. Despite clear signs of distress, withdrawal, and school refusal, the staff ignored our concerns and failed to ask why.

There is little structure, no meaningful support, and no accountability for student behavior. Our child became severely depressed and developed suicidal thoughts, and the school offered no help. As a family, we’re still dealing with the lasting emotional impact.

This is not a safe or supportive environment, especially for vulnerable or neurodivergent students. Please think twice before sending your child here.

let me start off by saying, DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!!!! as a current student, this school is honestly one of the worst schools your kid could go to. for starters, counslers have favorites, and never make time for your kid. if your kid has drama , or another student that is the counselor’s favorite, it will be turned around on ur student so THEY get in trouble. then, the teachers are honestly just the worst, i think within my 3 years of going here i’ve had only 3 good teachers. teachers also will obviously pick and choose who they’ll like, along with targeting the more popular students even if there doing there work. 3rd of all is the dress code, you can’t even wear a TANK TOP without a teacher telling you to cover up even if it’s not against the dress code. they also will tell your kid weird sayings, ex: “if you can see it at the pool, you shouldn’t see it at school.” and i honestly find that so confusing because it makes ZERO sense. 4th of all, certain students will get off scott free if there parent works for fcps or if they arent as smart as everyone else, fcps cheating policy is if you are caught, it’s a referral, a 50% on the test, and a call home. a certain student i know, got caught cheating, and got no consequences whatsoever. so much more i can say, but i wont. all i have to say is, save your kid and save them from coming home crying everyday because the counselors wont do anything about them being bullied, and DONT SEND THEM HERE.

There is another review on here that hits the nail on the head. Highly authoritarian run, kids made to feel bad when they are not bad kids which in my opinion creates rebelliousness (well if you’re going to paint me in that light anyway, right) . No social/emotional support, normally takes 2 to 3 conversations with teachers or administration to make sure you are heard. Dishonesty, bullying, a bunch of fights constantly. Heavily populated and overcrowded . Lack of sufficient support for struggling students.

We have 2 kids that go here and they seem to really like it and they're learning a lot. It helps if you're in the adjoining neighborhood. There's always a class or two they say is a waste of time. My biggest complaint is that navigating Schoology web site makes it difficult to find out how and what they're learning. I wish things were on paper they could bring home for me to review.

So far in the 2021-2022 school year there have been THREE weapons threats. Students either said or posted online that they were intending to bring a gun to school. The parents weren't informed of the first two threats. The kids just came home to say they aren't allowed to carry backpacks anymore.

I moved to the Urbana/Frederick/Ijamsville area because the schools were rated highly. DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS TO THIS SCHOOL. This website hasn't been updated in a few years I guess. The school is overcrowded, there are behavioral issues, and children are treated like bad cattle. I attended a crowded underfunded public school and it was never this bad.

The administration treats both parents and students very poorly. Teachers are spread so thin the classes aren't even worth attending. If your child is smart they will be bored. If your child is struggling they'll be stressed and never receive the help they need. None of these things are the teachers' fault. The administration has no idea what it's doing with this many kids and uses hyper-authoritarianism to try to maintain control. There were behavior issues linked to a nationwide social media trend called "Devious Licks" so the administration closed all the bathrooms save for one. This meant there was no time for kids to use the bathroom throughout the school day.

God forbid your child is sick or hospitalized, the administration does not properly communicate with the teachers or parents. My child returned to school without a single teacher having been informed they were hospitalized and were required to make up all of the missing work. After turning in the note from the hospital, the office lost it, then continued to harass us for doctors' notes.

There is a profound lack of respect, leadership, and ability to maintain a healthy learning atmosphere at Urbana Middle. If you are thinking of moving to the area for the schools don't, you will be paying for private schools as well.

When I contacted the school to politely inform them that I was applying at a private school and needed paperwork they came off almost offended. You'd think they'd be relieved but no. Aside from the registrar, everyone acted like I was telling them to their faces that their school is a total mess. I simply said I found a school with smaller class sizes.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE. I rated the teachers highly because I know they are doing the best they can. 30+ kids per class and a poorly run administration has to be hell for them.

This school is great, maybe a few teachers may be bad here and there but the school in general is good. The kids can be annoying but it's a middle school, every school is going to have a bad bunch of kids. Majority of the teachers are respectful and effective, and the school programs are also good. The principal and vice principals are nice and kind, I've never had a problem with them. My only issue is when a kid broke my Rubik's cube and nothing was done, but it wasn't really a big deal. Honestly, it's a good school in general, I would definitely recommend this school.

The main reason for moving to Urbana was for the schools. Big mistake. My child has gone from enjoying school and always having friends to hating school and children not wanting to let him/her in their clique. The majority of the children are obnoxious, rude and just plain mean. The school has a serious problem with bullying and in my opinion, will never be solved as long as the children get away with such terrible behavior. On to the teachers .... the 6th grade teachers seemed fine but I think most of the 7th and 8th grade teachers have lost the will the teach, probably due to complete lack of respect from the children.

This is a terrible school. I'll try to keep this brief, although I won't end up touching on half of the issues. Bullying - they have no idea on how to handle this. The counselors approach is to blame the student filing the complaint, and that's when she actually gets round to speaking with them. Teaching - the initial impression was that they were great teachers, then 7th grade comes around and it's been like night and day. One science teacher who moved to the school this year (Linowitch) has absolutely no clue. She will make students feel isolated; donuts for those who actually try in class, by which she defines "trying" as getting an A. What about students who try their best but a B/C is the best they can attain? She will offer extra credit for bringing her in a power strip from home as she didn't have any. I always thought that extra credit would be directly linked to your studies and items to be purchased/donated to your teacher. Next she'll be basing it on what gifts you bring her. These just some examples of how this school is not what it makes itself out to be. Also students being told to take down negative reviews just shows how much of a problem it is.

This school was a great place to be after I moved out from a state where I suffered many burdens among peers. I went here from 2012-2013 and the education here is superb! By no means is this school perfect, where I have to point out that some kids behaved rather disruptively and inappropriately. But on top of all that, this school has friendly faces, great teachers, superb education, and a very helpful administration and faculty. I recommend that kids who live in the area should attend this school! :)
