Deer Crossing Elementary School

Having just moved here in August 2020 we have been very happy with the schools. We are in Deer Crossing Elementary School and the teachers we have are amazing.

The teachers have gone above and beyond to make sure that all students in class are on level. As we have been online and now a hybrid learning model the teachers have had to adapt but they have done so successfully. There were students that could not maintain focus during the online learning and that is unfortunate. Some had to drop out. But for those that stayed the experience has been a great one.

We moved from Montgomery County Maryland, and I can say that the school here has been amazing and much better run than where we came from.

Let kids with behavior issues get away with way too much.

Students run the show, no accountability from staff or parents.

Too many entitled families and students who are allowed to get away with abhorrent behavior. Very spare the rod spoil the child mentality.

Very poor. You have a community of families that have chosen to spoil their children, allow them endless screen time as a stand in babysitter, uninvolved and like to point fingers at teachers and other staff rather than point it back at themselves. Staff need to hold students with behavior more accountable and provide more support, especially when a sub is in the classroom. A substitute does not see every students behavior everyday and often are unaware of the day to day problems these students have. If you set a threshold for these students, that is what they will be held to and its not fair for parents to whine and cry about it, if the student to did not meet those expectations and point fingers at the teacher or substitute.

Homework is kept to a minimum which salvages what little family time we have at home in the evenings.

No principal can please all parents, or even any parent all of the time. I have had a preponderance of good experiences with the principal.

Invested parents, invested teachers, strong all around. Moved 45 min to this neighborhood with the school being a major deciding factor and are so glad we did! Very kind and caring faculty and staff.

The staff is excellent. They really care and are on point. The parents are very involved in the school too. You can tell a majority of the families care about education.

The music and gym classes are very impressive. The experience of these teachers shines through the concerts, field days, etc.

When my son first started to attend DCES, I was absolutely in love with it and couldn't be happier. But, a few years ago when leadership changed and a new principal came on board, it started to go downhill and has not gotten any better. I have brought unprofessional situations i have witnessed with her staff to her attention and nothing was ever done. In addition, one of the secretaries in the front office is one of the rudest people I have ever met in my entire life! Not only has she been rude to parents, but more commonly to the students. Pretty soon I am going to have to call her out. Though, it probably won't do any good considering numerous complaints by other parents have been made and once again nothing has been done. I am really hoping that leadership changes hands again soon so that the school can become the DCES that I loved. Otherwise I have a feeling that it is going to be a rough few years as my other child enters the school.

I feel compelled to respond to the review written on July 30th. It's obvious this parent is completely out of touch with the school itself. The school itself does not do any fundraising. Fundraising is only done by the PTA and the funds raised by the PTA are used to pay for school wide assemblies, Family Educational Fun Nights, classroom magazine subscriptions, student assistance, and enriching classroom materials. The sweat pants comment is just too funny - perhaps if this parent were really involved, they would have known that the Jump Rope for Heart program happens on those conference days. It's great that so many of our teachers participate! Personally I'd rather see my kids teachers in comfortable clothes participating with them in recess games, running laps with them outside or just being down on the floor involved with the little ones. I don't think you can say that a teacher wearing an executive outfit or suit makes for a better teacher than one who is dressed comfortably and more involved with the kids! DCES continues to be a top notch school in the county!

Nice building. I wish it was full of people who cared about teaching. teachers wear sweat pants on Teacher Parent conference day. Teachers don't care and spend more time on fund raising. The principal is just the worst. It's like dealing with a spoiled brat. You can't win here folks.,

This is a great school if your child is a typical learner. For children who might need a little extra help, but don't fall into the special ed category, it's mediocre. "extra help" is often given by parent volunteers, which is better than nothing, but doesn't quite cut it. I was also shocked to see how much homework is given in first grade this year as compared to prior years. DCES does a good job of creating cohesion and making school fun for the kids. There is definite room for improvement with regard to kids who need a little extra help, but overall we've been satisfied with the school.

Very rude staff. The front office is as customer friendly as the Obamacare website. I would go private or home school if you are in this district. Or sell your house and move. It's that bad.

I wrote a review back in January that I was completely happy and satisfied with the school and services. Well, due to some continuing circumstances that are hard to get resolved, I am changing my opinion. Administration is getting harder to deal with and when they make a mistake with your child they do not apologize instead it is swept under the rug and there seems to be a lack of respect extended to the parents :( very unfortunate as this started out a great journey. There needs to be an "attitude adjustment". Look how the reviews started out years ago very positive...and now these recent two years not so good. I am keeping my eyes and ears open hoping to get a little more respect in the future.

Great school our daughter is thriving! The K team is amazing and the rest of the staff is open, friendly, and know what they are doing! The PTA is great and hosts many original events for our family. We are do lucky to have made the decison to live near this great school. Kudos to the staff and thank you for your work!

Much room for improvement. D.C. public schools could teach this location a thing or two. This would explain home schooling's rise in Frederick county to be the highest per capita in the state of Maryland.

This school is not a place to send your child. The literally "teach the test" rather than educating the children. The leadership is lacking at this institution. If you want to put your child's imagination to sleep you have come to the right place. Frederick county has charter schools and many other options available now and in the future. I would think most anyone could do better than the staff at the school this past year. No effort put into the children. This year it was all complaining about budget cuts and no educating. The budget per student at this school is $11,800 in state, local and federal spending. It is more than private schools which do a far better job. I don't know where the money goes although they did install a high end "jail type" security system this year and the school board has a fancy new headquarters. It might be that the teachers make more than the parents they work for. It might be the $100,000 a year principal's salary.

Our teacher this year allowed my child to fall behind and forced all the classwork that was not completed on us. School did not take our concerns seriously. Deer Crossing is a lot like the MVA when it comes to customer service.

School run by hostile front office staff. School currently writing and submitting their own reviews to offset honest reviews by parents. If you want to fight with red tape and government intrusion into your life, by all means enroll with this school. Otherwise investigate pretty much all others near by as a much better alternative

I find the administration and especially the principal to be very open and easy to reach. She is very skilled at problem solving and does things by the book and as required by law. Its unfortunate that some circumstances would have been dealt with the same no matter what school some parent's child would have attended. Principals are bounded by law and policies set forth by the state and the board. Principals are not paid to deal with hostile parents who attempt to bully answers and force phone calls with them. Keep up the great work principal!!!!!

I am still at Deer Crossing and I have to say eventhough there has been a change in administration, I still find this school amazing. The new principal is always there to listen to your praise and concerns. I would highly recommend sending my students here and I was once a teacher myself.

This school is a welcoming and inviting place where students are challenged to learn every day. The students have many extra curricular activities to choose from including band, performing arts, academic contests, art and creative writing competitions, environmental science projects like composting and tree planting, and mentoring of younger children. The teachers are open to trying new ideas and work very well with the community to involve community members who are interested in making this school excellent. Both of my children have had outstanding teachers through the first two years of school.
