This school is pretty bad. School counselors don't do anything remotely close to stopping fights or threats and hate students that literally do nothing. The DMV trappers and bad kids are all friends with the counselors, and that continues and enables their behavior. Fights happen every few weeks and the magnet program offers little benefit. The curriculum is basically the same as a normal student, except you are forced to take a boring computer science course from 6 - 8 and you might get an extra field trip or two. Overall, if your child is planning on going to this school, I would rethink your decision and contemplate whether or not your home school is that bad. Parents tend to over exaggerate how bad your home school is, but in the end the material always stays relatively similar and progression is the same. Magnet schools tend to have worse environments than home schools and the main focus in them is the magnet program, to which they barely do much on.

yes I would recommend this school. The school is a great school. I love all the students there and I have some favorites it’s your favorite teachers too. I’ll give the school 810 out of 10. I teach math and science. You just got a try hard go to school if you want to be a teacher or a sub and yeah so that’s what I did. I went to school I graduated did with a college graduate. It came back home then I went to school for me to be a teacher and I really love being a teacher because like I get to meet new students and I really good working with students.

Since this is an MYP-IB school, all homework for general classes and magnet classes have to have a defined and extensive rubric for assignment as well as scoring. Homework is accessible on MyMCPS site. School follows MCPS guidelines for scoring of homework.

Clemente remains a career builder for teachers and administrators, because of the sheer number of programs that this school hosts. This means that many teachers and admin go on to more plum assignments after a few years at the school, but by the same token it also attracts really good teachers and admin. Bad teachers are usually not tolerated in the school because of a very vocal and engaged parent community. Teachers also need to teach with an IB focus, so they tend to keep getting support and training from the IB coordinator as well.

Students have to adhere to the MCPS code of conduct as well as aspire to develop the IB student profile of a caring and inclusive global citizen. There are community projects etc as part of the curriculum, clubs etc. Still it is a middle school and these students are like typical middle schoolers.

The current principal is effective and engaged. He listens to the parents and is open to making adjustments and changes as long as it is fulfilling MCPS guidelines. He does not create roadblocks for parents or students. He is effective and hires good teachers.

Pretty good. My child was in Math/Sci magnet program. She also got a high level education in world studies and foreign language. English was MCPS average because it was not a magnet class for my child. Lots of clubs and activities and a chance to participate in contests, competitions and tournaments. Some excellent grade-level field trips within the school dovetailing with the IB curriculum. Excellent and award-winning music program, an excellent drama teacher, active NJHS, SGA etc. Parent involvement was effective. Tons of opportunities. A student can seize these opportunities and have a fantastic and enriching three years.

The magnet program is outstanding here. My daughter has been challenged and that was a necessity for her. She is a caucasian girl in a diverse but well managed middle school.

Like any American public school, the everyday student population includes some wonderful kids and some rowdies. But the rowdies are tightly controlled and monitored - perhaps more than elsewhere. The current Principal is a non-nonsense guy who tolerates no bullying, dirty language, or anything approaching bad behavior in the hallways.

The Magnet kids and rest of school rarely interact, other than in gym, and my daughter has never had a problem ever of any kind. We have also not heard of or experienced anything negative and she has been there for all three years now (8th grade now).

The teachers in the Magnet are some of the best. With rare exception, she has been challenged at levels equivalent to 11th grade or higher even at 7th grade both in Math and particularly in English. All of her friends are straight A-ers and the school coordinator for the program is excellent (Somer Snider).

As a father who has been very picky about my daughters' teachers and friends, I can verify for you that regardless of race or background, the Magnet at Clemente is outstanding and they really do pick the best of the best for the program. Competition is fierce, but if you can get in - only one out of about 80 is selected - do it.

I did see a complaint about the "slavery" emphasis etc. of the curriculum. Obviously, it is not the job of any teacher to preach or propagandize -- the mark of a bad teacher. I cannot speak for the regular school portion, but my daughter was never told HOW to think, only to learn to think rationally based on evidence and her own ideas, particularly in her non-Math classes. Her English teacher, Ms. Kelly last year in 7th grade -- was off the charts outstanding. (She's moved on to a high school now - but her replacement is equally good). In the magnet, there is no preaching. She loved it.

You cannot find a school in the America with absolutely NO loudmouth idiots raised by lousy parents wandering around. However, at Clemente, they make sure these clowns stay separate and away from everybody else. There are far fewer of them at Clemente than some disparagers have stated here, but in any case if your child is looking for an excellent education grades 6-8, you cannot do better than Clemente's magnet program.

total lack of leadership and organization . With leadership and organization they could be effective as things were in 2014 in general, my child's teachers under performed . There were w few bright spots . a few teachers and a former acting administrator went above and beyond but they were exception. the lack or leadership permeated all .

It was uncoordinated. Each teacher would " only give a maximum of 30 minutes a night " . We heard this refrain all the time . Somehow they could not comprehend that 30 minutes per class equates to three hours per night . They lacked any coordination at all. Large projects were due on the same day as tests or large projects for other classes or field trips . If you asked the magnet program coordinator about the rationale ... he had no idea what was assigned , why it was assigned .

Two of the teachers were caught in a fist fight in full view of the children . Very poor examples. They routinely made broad sweeping , unfair rules to disciple a few . Girls could not wear head bands of any sort because apparently some girl said it represented gang colors. so instead of dealing with the issue , the girls spent the year without headbands of any sort .

My child was a part of the magnet/ gifted and talented program . He had a great experience in elementary school and later in high school . The lack of leadership and basic organization at this school was shocking . the school leadership had no idea what the teachers were doing . Every lesson was racially charged and recklessly managed. Far to much emphasis on slavery . almost Every class had a slavery reading assignment , book report , class project . We were inundated by slavery and racism projects . Then after they would introduce the constant stream of race focused curriculum, they would walk away from it leaving the students embarrassed, divided and angry . They literally created racial division . The lack of leadership was astonishing. To say that the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing is an understatement . My child moved on to HS in another gifted and talented program and it is well run by responsible , organized educators. the difference is day and night . We hated every second of it . Almost left numerous times. My understanding is that the leadership has been changed for 2015 so things may be different . The graduation ceremony was a fitting end to a horrible experience. Disorganized, rowdy , weird with the teachers and principals taking time to sing and alternately publicly resign . it was painful . . I have kids in other schools in the county because of the wide age range of my children . RCMS was by far the worst . Seriously I cannot under score this. it was an awful experience .

The non-magnet students are very vicious, rude, loud,and academically inproficient. That is why the magenetic students have been called to this school.The non-magnet students have a bad influence on the magnet children who are not used to this kind of behavior.The magnet children are commonly disgusted by this behavior and do not act like this.The magnet children are very kind and are very academically proficient.
Personally,I hate how the normies and some non-magnet teachers act. I know that in my home middle school,many of these things would not happen. To be honest, this school's learning environmet isn't all that great. I am a seventh grader in the Humanities program and the new rules are beating me up. I have gym first period, which means, I don't get to see or hear morning anouncements for three quarters of the year, and so do a bunch of other kids. The new lunch arrangment with different lunch periods is depressing too. By sixth period I am starving and I find it hard to learn in fifth period when my stomach is empty. Third period lunch, however, is worse. It's basically like a second breakfast. Hopefully something will change. The ten minute rule is the last thing I wanted to address. It's pretty pointless. sometimes I have to go to the bathroom really badly but I am not allowed to leave the room, abd when you have to go, ten minutes is a very long time. I am often distracted by thinking about when I will be able to go, that I can't learn all that well. I'm sure other students have these problems as well and I hope there will be something done to fix these rules.

continuing from a past review.. The computer science program for math science is barely a class at all right now because the teacher has been out for basically the whole entire year and the class is now just using sites such as code academy and other fun sites to learn computer programming. The sub has done a lot to fill this gap that the teacher has left behind, and I don't really feel a difference. If you are taking classes 2 years ahead of you, for example, in 6th grade if you take IM and 7th grade you take algebra, you basically will be on par with the magnet kids in math. The magnet classes just move faster, but there will only be a slight noticeable difference. Other classes such as world studies, english (if you aren't in humanities), gym, electives, will all be shared. Another problem that people have been pointed out are fights. Every school has their fights, clemente just has more than the norm. They never were a problem for me, as if you aren't looking for a fight, you won't get on. My 3 years at this school has really built on my character, making me a better person. If someone makes a joke about me i can laugh it off and won't get mad. will continue//

It's a nice school and all, but sometimes I don't feel secure in the midst of fights. They're usually not TOO frequent, but it's still a bit freaky. I am in humanities, and the rivalry between us and the math science kids is odd, I try to be nice to them, but the humanities kids sometimes consider it a "betrayal". Yeah... That's all I have to say other than us "humanidorks" get quite a bit of homework which leads to stress.

I would like to preface this by stating I am an 8th grade student in the Humanities & Communications Magnet Program. RCMS has some great faculty members, and I have had a tremendous and amazing education from most of my teachers, who put their full heart into their classes.However, the reason that I took off three stars was because of several reasons: General ineptitutude and a toxic learning enviroment, however I will only focus on the first due to the char. limit. I have recently gotten out of a week long trip from New York City as part of a media documentary project. However, one of my hotel roomates, let's call him Ben, was very rowdy during the trip, and ended up punching me in the face and chipping my tooth. I spoke to one of my magnet coordinators about this after we got back, and he said that Ben was "playing" and I shouldn't worry about it, so nothing happened of it except Ben got one after school detention; for comparison, someone was recently suspended for a week for wearing a red bandana in their back pocket. The coordinator has a record of covering up incidents if they would mean a blemish on his record, as this New York Trip is a big enrollment factor for Roberto.

I 100 percent love this school. It's my third year going here and so far, everything's been great. Most of the staff is just amazing and respectful to the students who respect them. Lunches are great, though lines are long. The music program is the only one in Montgomery County to have JamHub studios (search them up! they're really cool!) and a Rock Band. The students go on amazing field trips, like Hershey Park, The Rock Hall of Fame in Ohio, New York, Boston, some even get to to Europe! Overall, I reccommend this school to anyone who wants to go. It is so refreshing to have my child go to a school with an administrator that actually cares about the kids. Mr. Beidleman is a breath of fresh air! He has made my son actually enjoy going to school. The discipline has improved tremendously over the past few years. Its hard to find a school in MCPS where its not all about the politics. Its time for MCPS to undertsand that the children come first!

I've been going to Roberto Clemente for the past three years in the normal program. I didn't get in to the Humanities program, and that lowered my interest to strive for anything higher. I'm still in advanced classes, but I don't think it's fair to dismiss the enitrety of the normal school population because we're not in a program. I've heard magnet kids say things like "all normies are rude and loud," but it could not be more untrue to generalize people like that. The magnet kids definetely get to go on more field trips than the normal population, and they excuse it by saying they work harder than we do, but the problem with that is we're not getting the chance to! In my experience, not being part of a program makes me feel dumb and less than the kids part of the programs. It makes me believe that no matter how hard I try in school, it still won't be as good as the magnet kids. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. All of the students in our school are talented in different areas of the things we learn. Our school does not aknowledge that enough. Instead it puts the kids that are labeled as intelligent on a pedestal and leaves the rest of not wanting to learn at all.

This school is completely unsatisfactory. The magnet program is the only perk in this school but even then, my son is in the magnet program and he comes home every day saying he is bullied for being a "nerd" and white. Horrible administration and teaching except for the program.

I taught at RCMS from 2007-2011 after a few years of teaching experience and getting my Masters degree. My first year of teaching there in 2007 was the WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE. I mean that when I say it. The worst. I left work crying almost every day. The students were extremely disrespectful, violent, and intimidating. I worked 60 to 70 hours a week just to keep up with the demands of the job and the administrative formal observations. I stuck with it because I actually cared about making a difference with these students & it got a lot better my 2nd year, as the school was improving greatly with a fantastic principal and I was learning how to better relate to my students. When the new principal took over in 2010, it got worse again. My morale, as well as the morale of other teachers, went down as the school atmosphere declined. The principal pretended to be friendly and caring, but wasn't. I stuck it out for 2 years with that principal, as I saw student behavior decline and become more like it was in 2007. At the end of the 2011 school year, I went on maternity leave and decided to take a few years of extended leave. When I return to teaching, I will interview elsewhere in MCPS.

Alright, so this school is half decent. Not bad, not good. The teachers are okay in general. The students are okay in general. Except for a lot of the non-magnet students, who behave quite poorly. Some magnet kids, even, have below average behavior. The administration is the worst thing about the school. Some administrators don't give a cow about bad behavior, while some go... a little overboard. This school offers a decent education, but there are definitely better schools out there. Also, the claims that magnet kids are "offensive" is quite silly. There is only offense when you find it in something, and it is not anyone's fault but you if you are offended by something. Just my two cents.

If no stars were and option I would have chosen no stars. I am disappointed with the administrators and the school. Removed my child after several incidents. Heart breaking to see the only kids that get into the magnet programs are kids from better school zones. The kids who live in the neighborhood are not given the same opportunities. This school has two different schools in one. Only magnet kids were allowed to meet Roberto Clemente's son when he came to visit the school. I was disappointed with lack or response from teachers when contacting via phone and/or email. Treated as nuisance when questioning the teacher and curriculum. Avoid school if at all possible, they absolutely hate parents who are involved they hate squeaky wheels and will try to make you and your child be the problem if you speak up!

I go to the school in the Magnet program and I have to say I don't like it at all. There are many teachers who are not compassionate of student problems, and force everything regardless if the student is able to complete it. The support staff is very rude: Once I tripped over the leg of a chair and a staff member yelled at me for 2 minutes, calling me "stupid", "clumsy", and "moronic", among other things. However, I think one of the worst parts is the community. There are a lot of fights and teachers turn a blind eye to them. The "cool" people strut around the school thinking they own the place, pushing away anyone who gets in their way. There are also many scantily clad girls, and many boys have their pants halfway down their legs. (Not sure if that's "cool" or something.) If you must go to this school, I would strongly advise you to bring your own lunch. I'm not sure if the cafeteria situation is the same as other schools, but in my opinion, it's awful. Lines take up half of the lunch period so a lot of people don't have time to finish their lunch, and when they do get it, it's unappetizing and dry. Overall, I would NOT recommend this school.

I do not know what to give this school for a rating. I am an 8th grader in the Humanities program. I LOOOVEEE the Humanities Program and I have a GREAT family there and I never want to leave the other Humanidorks. The Humanities program has great teachers and great students. Some people have commented that the Humanities program is catered too much. NOT TRUE. None of the administrators/gym teachers/non-magnet teachers pay attention to us. We barely get NYC, and that's the highlight of our year. People complain that the Humanidorks get better teachers and field trips than other students. THAT'S BECAUSE WE USE THOSE TEACHERS AND FIELD TRIPS TO THE UTMOST ABILITY! THIS IS OUR REWARD FOR WORKING HARD AND STUDYING AND LIKING TO BE ACADEMICALLY CHALLENGED. The Humanities program gets 10/5 stars. The school outside the programs though, gets a 0/5 stars. It's absolutely dreadful. Fights occur daily, curse words are used more than the word "the", and just the school atmosphere and students ARE HORRIBLE. so I give it a 3.

RCMS has an amazing diverse community. However many in the leadership and staff are stuck in old models of both leading and teaching. The materials are outdated and unispiring. Many of the teachers have no interest in inspiring learning - it is learn this, take the test and move on. Special education in this school is poorly managed. The teachers are wonderful but many support staff are disinterested in their jobs and lack compassion for the children. There is little to no "inclusion" and the attitiude of non sped kids is poor towards the sped children. Communication from the school to families is poor. The counseling office has never been able to help me, they have always neede to "check" on answers to my questions. The PTSA is hardly existent and the "magnet" student families are eliteist and seperatist in their attitudes toward the rest of the population. They are also catered too. This school needs a total re vamping in staff and attitude.

I never quite know how respond when asked to rate this school. From my point of view, I love this school and will give it five stars. But if you were judging based on the number of fights, or the grades, or the number of suspensions, you would have to give it a 2.5 or a 3. But I do not grade my school based on how many fights it has a week. I base it on how much I want to come to it in the morning. I am an 8th grader in the humanities program and will be so sad when I have to leave all my friends at the end of the year. Because they are more than just friends, we are the humanities family. But families have their problems, so I feel that the staff and student body of RCMS is a family. I see problems all the time, every single day, but what can you expect? I give it 4 stars because yes there are negative, but the positives should count too.

I have attended Roberto Clemente for the past two years, and currently attend this year in the Humanities Program. I know there has been a history of violence, but personally, I believe conflict at this school is easily avoidable and those who do partake are punished and face consequences. It may be the fact that I am a student enrolled in the Humanities program, but I have had a wonderful experience with teachers and have received excellent help. Addressing language and behavior, sure are school is not the best, but it is not the only one in which people curse or are loud in the hallways. Once again, being a first hand witness, I have to respond to the discipline comments because whenever I do see kids wildly misbehaving, they are always punished, in either lunch reflections, after school detention and even suspension and expulsion. I think the negativity or positiveness of this school is mainly based off experience, and apart from a few students, I have seen many people love and make the best of it. Personally, I do not look forward to leaving this school and I advise students to make the best of their time at Roberto Clemente.

As a student at Roberto Clemente Middle School, I have seen first hand what goes on at the school. To be honest, bad things do happen here. Profanity can be heard constantly throughout the day and fights do occur quite often. However, it is always the same students and as long as your child keeps his or her distance from them. I am in the Humanities Magnet Program and am generally well-liked. This is because there are great teachers and great students despite the bad reputation the school has. So, if you are planning to send your child to RCMS, I would implore you to consider these two things. First, is my child aware and mature enough to respond to the poor habits exhibited by the "bad" crowd. And B, if so, make sure your child applies to the Gifted and Talented Magnet Programs where they will be grouped with other well-behaved, ready to learn kids. The education the Magnet Programs give outweighed the bad influences for me personally. But make sure your child is emotionally and mentally ready for a "new" experience.

This school spiraled downward when the new principal came in after the one who won 'Principal of the Year.' The teachers don't care if there are students who repeatedly skip classes and run down the hallways, screaming profanities over and over again. The students who come out of this middle school are rude, arrogant, and disrespectful because there are no teachers who actually care about the students' future left in that school. It's terrible, and I'm glad that I'm in high school now. I am never going back there again. I only hope that my little brother doesn't get sucked into Clemente's black hole of horror.

I am a humanities student in this school and I have to say that there are many problems with this school. Every year since the new principal, teachers are changing the rules and how they do things which confuses a lot of us. 6th grade was PRIDE, 7th is SOAR, and now, 8th is SOAR with PRIDE. Lunches are far from healthy and there are too many fights in the hallways and classrooms. I agree with the other Humanities student that the Center program is not a part of this and that a majority of the students from outside the program are the ones that makes my opinion so negative. I don't mean to sound offensive to other parents and of course there are students who are respectful and responsible but there isn't a day where I can walk through hallways or classes without hearing swear words, disrespectful behavior to students and teachers and a student touching another student.

I Just Finshed the 7th grade there there is alot of fights. some teachers you cant under stand . so teachers kids are really scared of . Teachers over all kids dislike. Mosst Teachers are RUDE nd Call kids name.(losers) and stuff like that . The councelers do NOT fix the problms between the kids.... they just make it wores. the school has alot of new rules since we got a new staff and i dont like the rules . and it really seems like since those rule were told to us there has been more fights and bad stuff . the staff is really rude over all . i would not recomen this school to anyone

When I finished the 7th grade at RCMS, the school was coming out of its best year yet, with violence at a low and noticeable progress in the school's academics. I attribute this to the formation of all-magnet classes, which eliminated most sources of conflict and allowed separate classes to proceed at appropriate, more individualized paces. This has changed with the introduction of the new principal. Through a persistent problem before, students increased their frequency of screaming obscenities and anti-semitic slurs. Discipline falls at the wrong ends of the spectrum; gym teachers allow frequent physical abuse to go unpunished, while other teachers give Saturday detention for even the slightest utterance. Fistfights are common and draw large, cheering crowds. Perhaps the best testament to the quality of education at this school is the grammar of those reviewing this school positively; I encourage any prospective student to read the positive comments so as to familiarize themselves with the improper English spoken by both students and staff alike. In short, though a once a refuge for gifted students, the school has become an example of mediocrity dominating the educational system.

I agree with parent opinion here that 'magnet students' talk about other students - it's offensive. Best is the diversity at this school. My sixth grader complained he wasted a whole year in math and science because it was repetition of curriculum from third and fourth grades. School must be willing to transition more AP students to magnet programs if need be.

this is a okay school. students are okay. but the teachers and the staff they showed true colors. they don't care about u only your education. they are rude and inconsiderate. i am ashamed and mad.

Our son has been attending RCMS since 7th grade. The school is a little too big for comfort but it is well organized. Teachers are very attentive to the students' needs and immediately respond if contacted. The student body is very diverse and, of course there are some students that I would not like my son to associate with. Nevertheless, the majority of kids is fine. I however do take offense with the way some "Magnet Students" talk about the rest of the students on this site and sometimes in school. Our son attends all Honors classes so he is in the very same classes these kids are taking. He did not apply for one of the Magnet Programs since we do not believe in Middle School gifted programs and the statements of the so-called highly gifted students seem to prove us right.

A principal transition bodes bad news for thie school. The previous principal was named Principal of the Year for the state of Maryland - he moved on to a admin job and the new principal is not getting the job done. Discipline is down, teacher morale is down - a bad spiral is beginning. The magnet programs are invite only from all over the county, moving into the school district will not neccessarily get your child in these programs. Watch for this school to decline in the next few years, it has already begun.

I am a student in the Humanities program at this school. There are many problems with this Middle School. You cannot walk through the hallways without hearing long strings of profanities, the teachers are entirely too lenient, and the food, although delicious, has no health to it's name. I know some reviews of this school, however, were angry and frustrated at the state of the school, and I disagree with that. The reason? It is mostly the student's fault. The children at this middle school are rowdy, disrespectful, and it is shameful for me to be considered a part of the 7th grade. The Center Program is not part of this, and I am sure a lot of the students do not take part in the idiotic behavior of their peers, but this has to stop.
