actual bad school, fights breaking out once a month on average, lockers being vandalized. Goes to show what a poor student body and teaching environment this school is embodied by. Do not send you child here.

There was a cruel science teacher , I personally do not think he shouldve even been working there !
& on the other hand , there is a horrible I mean horrible staff who worked here she was an assistant Principal L. Crawford !
If u need your student to have the best education ever ! > please Find elsewhere & research about the academy before enrolling your child in any school .

MLK Middle School: where the floors are slipperier than Mario Kart tracks and the teachers act like NPCs who wont respond unless you repeat yourself three times. I got hurt so bad here I shouldve earned hazard pay. Zero stars, but 10/10 if youre training for Wipeout.

This school has been a terrible experience because, the teacher don't even help you when you ask, and some of the staff dont even care or just ignore you on purpose even if you raise your hand. There will be always a random right in the hallway mid period so it's harder to get to other classes. The classrooms are extremely loud, that I couldn't even listen to music even though I had noise cancellation on. making it hard to focus on the assignment Instead of feeling encouraged, many students just try to get through the day without getting caught in drama or chaos. And the teacher will just call your parents for no reason after you did nothing.

This school is horrible please do not come here for your sake because its too ghetto, too loud, too many fights and gossips and I cant listen to my music in peace. Do not come to this school because when you come you will regret it and you will cry. Teachers don't help, they give the due date too early, and they don't teach anything. They will call your parents for anything, if you even open your chromebook they will scream at you.

*I am a student in the Humanities Program*
Learning: There are multiple people in most of my classes who rarely show up to class, but overall attendance isn't a large issue. Majority of students do seem disinterested in learning, and the way courses and assignments are poised make it seem like school isn't for learning as much as completion.
Special Ed: There is at least one staff member that is always with special needs students through the halls and in class that seem to help them.
Teaching: I love most of my teachers and feel they truly care about my learning, but they are excessively disrespected in this school to the point where they start behaving angrily at all students.
Safety: Safety is by far the biggest issue. There are multiple security guards, but that has not improved the safety. Hallways are extremely dangerous, as there are fights at all times. There are bi-daily larger fights that gain crowds, but most of the time they are only enough to get the people nearby knocked down and escape attention. I've experienced frequent shelter-in-places due to numerous reasons, which are most of the time not disclosed to parents or students.
Social-emotional support: This school does have a counselor for each grade, but the organization is terrible. There is a calendar which you can choose an appointment slot on, which seems efficient. However, my friends and I once had a simple question about school volunteering and were told by our teacher to make an appointment with the counselor, so we did. We came to the counselor at our designated time to find that the counselor was supposedly in a meeting, though we had picked an open slot on the schedule. We decided to reschedule the appointment only for the same thing to occur. We ended up being able to ask another staff member in the counseling office and receive an answer, but the whole ordeal was aggravating. So, while support is provided, it is not easily accessed.
Family Engagement: Family doesn't have a large part in the school, but they have many opportunities to visit school events, etc.
Overall, this school is better than most in the area.

I am currently in the magnet program, and I am going to 8th grade this coming school year. The program is nice, with separate field trips, along with special subjects not shown in other classes. A major thing to note is the excessive amount of fights that happen. Staff can do little to stop a crowd of people looking at fights, albeit these fights are mostly ridiculously harmless & onlookers do not get hurt unless its from the other onlookers. This school has a good selection of clubs, but some sports such as cross country do not experience many people joining. The outside P.E. area is spacious, with a basketball court along with a wide field.

I have attended this school in the past and the curriculum here is great, and the humanities magnet program here makes it all the better. The teachers are adaptive, flexible, promote a love for learning, and are great role models. The facility is also great, and the students here are welcoming.

Hi, I just finished at this school (2019-2022). The kids here will tear children down and they will hurt you. In sixth grade it really hurt me. But, in 8th grade it made me a stronger person. What Im trying to say is kids sent here are going to get their feelings hurt unless they build thick skin first. If they dont, its going to drag them down and I promise its going to hurt. Im a better person now and negative comments dont affect me. Bullying is a serious issue at this school and it has not been addressed. Theres fights, some aggressive and others are just hair pulling.
Now if kids surround themselves with people who really care and love them, their experience will be 20x better. I recommend clubs. Ones that I was participating in were, community club & drama club. Only problem with drama is that the teacher whos running it had too many kids and was stressed out with all of them. There were some running up and down the halls, some left the school during club and it was just not well organized. Maybe because its the first year of it so that makes sense but I feel like itd be more enjoyable if it wasnt mostly ran by a child. (A student proposed the idea.) Community club is a fun place to be honest. The teacher is really nice and accepting to all races & genders. 10/10 club.
So is this the right place for my child? I dont know. Theres better schools and this school isnt awesome but your childs year will all depend on who they hang around. If theyd rather duck into a teachers classroom during lunch or not give a damn and be themselves in school. I personally had a fun eighth grade year.

I am in Magnet at MLK currently, and I have some great friends and teachers! But tbh there is a huge issue with fights, and most kids that get in the fights, are friends with the security guards. As well as teachers dont do anything about it, and drugs and smoking in the bathroom is a huge issue. If u come here for magnet, depending on your home school, you might be better off there. If this is ur home school, you are either super nice, or one of the problem kids, and even if ur in Magnet, there are gonna be kids that are the problem kids there too. The teachers seem to be proud of a place, that they should definitely not be proud of. The counselors are also awful, and one was going around diagnosing kids with mental health issues, and is friends with the kids who are bad, but hate the kids that usually dont do anything. Its just bad, but as long as you stay unseen and dont cause issues, u should be ok. Its like either u want a good school, or a better education.

I am a student here at MLK. I've been here since 6th grade (2018-2019) and I'm now in 8th grade (2020-2021). Overall, I wish I could rate it 5 stars, but there are some minor things that I dislike about it. The school doesn't really address bullying/teasing and students can get away with many things. However, the community is good and I can guarantee that you'll find friends here and people that understand you. Almost all of the teachers/staff members are amazing and go above and beyond to make your learning experience the best. Lunches are great, too, lol!

MLK has been a great place for our three daughters. I love that it is not over-crowded and the teachers know all the kids' names. It feels more like a private school. So many of the teachers go above and beyond for the students. My girls have thrived and done well in all their classes, clubs and sports. I'm thankful we are in the MLK community.

Run from this school, administrators and some teachers don't care or communicate (there clueless), if your child is gifted your better off going to Neelsville. This is one of the worse schools in Germantown, MD.
