Anybody who tells you this school is great is half correct. They don't, however, tell you the dark side of it. The Harrison County District is pretty good, don't get me wrong. Keep doing your job. WHHS is one of the top choices you would take your child into if you are trying to get them into the Harrison County District. The teachers are nice and sweet (an exceptional amount of them), but there are some that won't even help you because of that one phrase "Well, you should've been paying attention." It doesn't matter if the student was paying attention or not, it is your job to teach these kids, no matter how much they get on your nerves. You signed up for the job, so what's the problem?

Another is the racism. Now, this school is not serious about it at all. They tell you they will do something about it, but never do. I get so many complaints from my friends about this school and how they handle racism. It is way too normalized there. They don't recognize their problems, but the minute someone points it out they are so quick to silence them and make them suffer. I have heard multiple people in class laughing or playing around wen we talk about something serious. Nobody does anything, because they are afraid they'll be bashed for it. Even the teachers don't step in. This needs t be fixed IMMEDIATELY.

Lastly, slurs. This connects to racism but on a different level. This is also normalized. People say words that are derogatory towards people of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, and sex. It makes people feel like they are below the person and it's the reason why people, like LBTQ+ people, is afraid of being open to their friends or parents today. The students, even teachers, judge people based on the way they look, and although it seems like they help you, you never know what they say behind your back. There is such thing as insecurity, and bringing people down does NOT make it any better.

The way this school handles problems is not at all fair. This school is great, but they need to do one thing:

RECOGNIZE.

Thank you.

I have never seen a school so dedicated to their students. They expect a lot and really work with them if they have a hard time.

West Harrison High School is without a doubt the best school on the Gulf Coast. The administration fosters a culture of excellence, and the faculty, staff and students meet the expectations. Discipline is not an issue in class rooms. Students want to learn and are active participants in the learning process. Teachers are given autonomy to create a curriculum that meets state and national standards while meeting the needs of individual students. Extra-curricular activities support academics in a way that I have never seen at another high school. Coaches expect athletes to be leaders in their chosen sports, but more importantly, coaches expect athletes to be leaders in the classroom. There is teamwork throughout the school, and it is a pleasure to come to work every day with the administrators, staff, faculty and students. There is no other high school in which I would want to work. WHHS has set a standard that other schools would have a very difficult time meeting.

West Harrison is a wonderful school! I work with a great group of teachers that go above and beyond to make sure their students are college and career ready. The administrators are supportive and are constantly in the hallways and classrooms. The students work hard to succeed in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities. I love my Hurricane family!

There is more than mutual respect between students and every adult on the campus. The students are successful because there is a culture of warmth and concern for students.
