I honestly do not know where to start with Flaming Sword Christian Academy. The first thing that comes to mind is Family. The moment you walk in, you know you are no longer a number. Your child is no longer a case file. You become family and are treated with such compassion, understanding, and respect. I found FSCA in the depths of utter despair. I sat in Dr. Hatmaker's office trying to hold back tears due to constant dead ends and lack of understanding or resources in the public AND private education sectors in our area. I walked into Dr. Hatmakers office thinking my child's academic career even though just starting was crumbling, and Dr. Hatmaker so confidently and with ease said "we UNDERSTAND and we got this". Her words and actions have not disappointed. My child LOVES LOVES LOVES going to school. We LOVE being apart of the FSCA family. Each child learns at their own pace, being taught to their individual learning plans. We also love that Dr. Hatmaker takes behavior as serious as education. Bulling is not tolerated. A lot of the children that attend FSCA left other schools due to bulling or they just didn't want to deal with the social politics of school. Dr. Hatmaker makes sure her school is a place for all children to feel safe, confident, and respected as individuals. I also really like knowing that if I drop off late in PJ's and have to sign my child in, no one bats an eye. No one there cares what you look like, what you do, what you drive. Its so refreshing knowing its such a judgment free zone.

Imagine basing a whole child’s life off a 10 minute interaction. Flaming Sword Christian Academy & Daycare on legion rd pretty much told my family that my brother will no longer be able to attend their school because they saw my autistic brother having one of his episodes on the security cameras, which is common for him in new environments. For a place that apparently (“specialize in autistic children”) Getting to know the child is at the very bottom of their priorities. They told us that he’s not acting autistic enough for it to be autism "over email btw not to our face when we were sitting in the office" . So your telling me that all the diagnosis from the 30+ doctors we’ve seen have been wrong, yeah okay.

I will make sure to tell everyone I work with, which is majority of Fayetteville. Thanks for showing us not to have trust.

This school has changed my son's life. He was getting bullied in public school and that made him shut down. At Flaming Sword, he can be himself and he for once enjoys going to school.

My Child has attended Flaming Sword for four years. We've never had any problems at this school. My child is excelling in subjects in the past was failing. The overall experience has been excellent for the entire family.

My mission is to have this school SHUT DOWN. This is a dangerous environment for special needs children with A LOT of coverup going on. All good reviews seen here are written by staff or by parents who endorse corporal punishment for speciual needs children. This school is DANGEROUS for your child and you WILL see an increase in maladaptive behaviors at home because they hit children with a wooden paddle there, as well as perform other types of dangerous techniques on their students. This school is SICKENING.

The teacher did not seem to know anything about catering to special needs kids at all. They was very impatient.

My child had too much homework for their age group, and the teacher was very unorganized.

School was by far the worst decision I ever made. Sure they will tell you they are qualified to cater to the needs of children with delays, but truth be told my child ended up in a class with a teacher that constantly emailed me with complaints about how my child was doing, which was bizarre to me because at the beginning of the school year, they was provided with information about the capabilities as well as limitations of my child ( they clearly didn't read). They will say that they will evaluate the child and create goals such as the IEP, and that is also very much a lie. My child was better off being home schooled, or even attending a public school. Weeks into the school they will ban the parents from even walking their children in the school, and they will also go against the parents will and spank the kids as well. My child's teacher just seemed to be a church member they hired that needed a job....This school is a daycare at best.

FSCA has changed my daughters life. They have given her opportunities that public school and another private school could not offer. This school is completely understanding of students who are in the process of testing, diagnosis, and medicine changes. My daughter went from hating school and not really achieving much academically to a honor student and excited to go there. This school is still growing and trying to expand to take in more children and offer more programs. Their tuition is reasonable for the services they offer. ** They do use corporal punishment but, parents sign a waiver for it to be used and the parent is always contacted.

My Child has homework nightly varying from math to reading. Her homework is not as overwhelming as it was in public school where she would sit for atleast an hour and cry.

In the past 3 years Flaming Sword Christian Academy has changed our lives in the most incredible way. My son went from being suspended from public school on a regular basis in 1st and 2nd grade to now being in AG classes 2 years ahead of where he would be in public school. His diagnoses are Aspergers and ADHD and we have significantly benefitted from the teaching methods and the firm love that all of the staff we have interacted with at FSCA embody. Their no-nonsense approach provides the structure my son thrives on. They have added after school activities such as karate and robotics that my son loves. Their low teacher to student ration (1:10) provides the hands on approach my son needs and in my opinion many problems have been prevented due to this. All 3 of our teachers have been truly wonderful and even though it is a 40 minute drive each way (2 hrs 20 mins per day of driving for me) it is well worth the time. It's an investment in my son's future. They also are very seamless in terms of working with the State Disabilities Grant and it's of note that because my son has an IEP and failed the public school system that the state pays our tuition. How can a school effectively deal with bullying when they order children with disagreements to "fight it out?"

My child's IEP - written by the principal and Dr Paul Jensen - literally ends with "Josiah needs to grow up."

My child is medically documented to suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Depression, ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder, Telling him to "grow up" is not going to cure any of these disorders, and is not only counterproductive but ignorant and insulting.

He's not going to be disciplined into becoming "normal."

He's also been told BY THE PRINCIPAL that people with Bipolar Disorder are "demon possessed." So yeah - despite this school's claim, it is anything BUT supporting to children with learning differences.

My son's class implemented a policy middle of the 2nd quarter not to assign homework. This sounds good until your child has to miss school and cannot bring home makeup work to complete it.

This school used to be wonderful, but has changed drastically over the past couple years. The final straw for us was receiving a copy of my child's IEP which literally states that he needs to "grow up," - despite medical documentation of multiple neurological and psychological disorders. I've never read a more disparaging, less professional document from a school.

Supposedly this school is meant for children with neurological disorders, yet parents are often told the problem is that their children are not disciplined enough, or that children are being "coddled" or "babied."

My child has been told that if he came to school with his hair uncombed it would be dyed pink - a threat the secretary insisted was meant to be hyperbolic. But to a child on the Autism Spectrum, it's impossible to tell hyperbole from truth, and he spent a week in severe anxiety before this was settled.

At another time, he was forced to hold the push-up position while a teacher yelled at him and accused him of lying because he answered a question in a too-literal manner (again, typical of a child on the Spectrum). This teacher was "counselled" over this but allowed to continue until nearly the end of the year, during which she continued treating neurologically-challenged children as if they were juvenile delinquents.
Just last week, a High School student (not my child) who had a conflict with another - and who no one denies should have been disciplined in some way - was ordered to "suit up and fight it out" with the other student or face expulsion. When the student refused to fight he was withdrawn. Be aware, if you're considering this school, that physical altercations are considered an acceptable means of solving student disputes. And that if your child refuses this they, too, can be expelled.

The mother of this child would write her own review but has found herself blocked from the school facebook page before her story could be shared. I wonder how many other parents have been silenced this way before being able to leave objective reviews?

Think long and hard before sending your child to this school. It used to be so wonderful, but has seriously lost it's way. I only hope that by sharing this some positive changes will be forced.

FSCA has given us hope for the future. This school has been such a blessing to our family. My son began Speech Therapy at the age of two with a diagnosis of Developmental Delay, but no one could tell us what was going on with him until we enrolled him at Flaming Sword Christian Academy for Kindergarten at age 4. Their assessments and recommendations got him the help he needed early on in the school year. We have subsequently learned that he is Autistic and ADHD. His teacher handles his Special Education Instruction beautifully and he is permitted to attend his service appointments with no disruption to his academics. The entire staff is incredibly attentive and sensitive to my son's unique needs. They communicate consistently with us so we know how our son is progressing and if he is struggling with something. I cannot imagine having my son in another setting at this point. The staff at Flaming Sword Academy is beyond compare and I will forever be grateful to them for taking my child in their care and helping him to flourish and grow. I agree with all policies and procedures. Information is openly shared and not censored. Other schools would do well to use FSCA as positive example.
