School Review

Extremely disappointing and unacceptable experience. Today, after school let out around 3:00 PM, my child and several other children could not be located because of issues with the schools bus/transportation situation. We were left standing outside in the heat searching for our children, while my nephew also did not make it to daycare as expected.

What was most upsetting was the lack of urgency, communication, and sympathy shown by the school during such a frightening situation. As a parent, there is nothing more terrifying than not knowing where your child is after they are supposed to have been safely dismissed from school.

Transportation is a basic responsibility of a school, and there needs to be a reliable system in place to ensure that every child is accounted for and safely gets where they are supposed to go.

It is especially disappointing to see the lack of resources and organization at what is supposed to be a school serving our children and community. This situation should never have happened, and parents should not have to stand outside in extreme heat searching for their children because the transportation system is not being handled properly.

The school needs to take immediate responsibility, communicate transparently with families, and make significant improvements to its transportation procedures. Our childrens safety should ALWAYS be the priority.

As an Instructional Lead at IDYL Charter School since 2016, I have had a front-row seat to what makes this school truly exceptional. IDYL is not just a great school it is the #1 school in North Carolina for student academic growth, and having worked here for nearly a decade, I can tell you exactly why that ranking is earned every single day.
What sets IDYL apart is its deeply intentional, individualized approach to learning. Teachers dont teach to the middle they meet every student exactly where they are. My son have experience bullying from his 5th grade ELA teacher at the institute for the development of young leaders located 4300 S Miami Blvd Durham NC 27703. She demonstrated ignorance and unprofessional behaviors by using the research statistics of the school scoring below 20% testing average as an overall school against my child, not communicating effectively regarding classwork, refused to assist my child with the appropriate homework assignments so my child would not get behind in class, took my child school computer away where it was extremely difficult to complete the homework assigned for the ELA class home because all the recommended applications are on the computer, and mocking my child. When I address the concerns at the school meeting, my son was removed from the school because they did not like that I used the words ignorance and unprofessional to describe the ELA teachers behavior. It was unpleasant experience having my child at this school. My child was up late every night as a 5th grader completing excessive homework online. Sometimes my child was given more than a 100 questions on one lesson per subject. Also, I had concerns about my child spending so much time on the computer in class and at home. I wish that I never enrolled my child in this school and I feel terrible as a parent that I put my child through so much humiliation and tiredness from the excessive homework assigned to my child. It is shameful to see a teacher and/or staff want to hindered a childs academic growth because of some biased and concerns that I have with the school. This speaks a lot and still shows ignorance and unprofessional behavior from some of the staff at IDYL.

The IDYL school has being a wonderful place for my children. Teachers understand how valuable our children are, and they treat them as their own. The teachers communicate well with parents and they are respectful. I have read some of the reviews here and I cannot believe those that had left a bad review, one I believe those are the example of bad parenting because IDYL has being a wonderful place since 2014 for my children. I have my kids here since they were at Club BLV. I had a bad experience at other school when my child was in kindergarten but IDYL showed my child how a caring person should look like.

Teachers work hard with students who are behind and struggling to bring them up to speed and grow them quickly. Teachers are kind and patient unlike other schools where they yell at and talk down to kids. They try hard to promote equity and inclusion for children of all backgrounds and it is evident. This is a school where children feel loved

My experience at this school has been great! The school environment is welcoming and accepting of all children. Equity is evident. Teachers are caring and effective in closing the educational gap. Students are loved and given exceptional opportunities to grow and learn.

This school is not safe. In the case of a lockdown, teachers don't have locks on their doors. No discipline is in place. Nepotism is at an all time high. (sisters of the CEO, daughter of CEO are all working together) Mismanagement of funds. Taken money for field trips and NEVER took the field trips. Turn over rate for new teacher is almost 95% every year. CEO and Principal are doing the same jobs. CEO hired all her family. EC dept is behind. No resources given to the teachers. Everything has to come out of their pockets. CEO is not honest and makes a lot of promises. This year, she had no record of the students at the school and went around asking the students if they had siblings there so that she could complete the form for the State. No safe recess area for the children. Students are not receiving proper intervention. Students are being promoted without have any type of standards in order to pass. Test scores are low because of lack of resources. Keep records on a paper calendar. Under pays her staff. Lack of furniture for the school classrooms. Inadequate classroom environment. For ex. Kindergarten does not have a bathroom in their classroom. No benefits, no medical leave, no accurate record keeping. This school is not ideal.

We love IDYL. Family oriented community. We feel very loved and supported. We love the ideas and encouragement to inspire our kids to be leaders of the community. My son's reading ability shot up to 2 grade levels. I can't say enough praise about IDYL.
