I am a 7th grade student my expirience with this school has been awful to say the least, the punishment system is weak, disorganized and teachers and admin abuse their power. I remember one time a student was being talked about inappropriately and tried to bring it to the social worker and all they did was take the student's computer away and did nothing else to stop him. when you pull of the mask of "successes" of this school, you get a harmful learning environment that makes students miserable to even set foot in this "school" environment. another time I got suspended because i was "guilty by association", all this school does is cover up their problem with their "amazing" test scores and get drunk on power whenever they want to. the teachers write you up or give you silent lunch for the littlest things, even at the end of the school year they enforce harsher punishments for things as little as talking in the hallway. all of these staff need to realize that they can't just abuse their power and hand out papers expecting us to learn something.

My experience at this school has been one of the worst experiences I have ever had. The staff is not helpful and have weak punishments and most of the time they give more and less punishments to different kids who have done the same if not worse things. I think the rules that go on are very dumb, for example getting "silent lunch" for putting my head down? that should not be allowed and the environment we get introduced to Is NOT appropriate at all such as vapes, bullying, disrespect, and a bunch more things. Including the fact that toward the end of the school year kids who passed final testing have to do tons of work with people who failed? how is that fair for kids who tried there hardest to pass and not even a good job or a prize just throw them in with everyone else. Some of the teachers specially "deep sea" do not take there job seriously when it comes to grading, discipline and showing a good example on us and to help us when most of the time they are disrespectful to us because we are kids? I don't think that is the right route to show us for when we are older. I do NOT recommend this school to parents and for kids.

prob the worst if not THE WORST school to go to, people vape, smoke, and bully people everyday. My team (blockade) had a food fight and the other team next to me (deepsea) is WAY worse than that can get a field trip. The food is HORRIBLE and its very unhealthy for you. they will NOT help you out in any was POSSIBLE I hate this school so much and I just won't recommend it so if your a parent or a kid thinking to move and go to John griffin middle school DONT.

Aight so right now I am a 7th grader in John Griffin middle and what I realized is that the teachers are so bad and like they don't grade anything and miscalculating grades the day before the grades came out for Q1 I had a 90 in ELA but when my report card came I had a 74 and after asking for weeks I finally got that 90 as the teacher supposedly (miscalculated my grade and its like the teachers don't care about you and I don't recommend this school at all and its bad as for the 1st week we did absolutely nothing except for rules and don't teach us anything

Current student at the time of writing this, this school has very major issues. First, the teaching and staff here are VERY hit or miss. Most of the time being a miss though. I could count on one hand the amount of teachers at this school that have made me feel engaged in their class, my learning, and me wanting to come to school. Most of the teachers here make me feel as if they're only showing up to get their paycheck, and don't care about the students at all. Administration here is just the worst as well. All they care about is grades and test scores to make themselves look good. They constantly try and give us rewards if benchmark or EOG test scores are good for them that quarter. These rewards are often broken or very underwhelming from what was promised to us. Coaches and sports are definitely... something. I can admit that we have very talented people on our teams but it sometimes is baffling to me that we win games with the coaches here. JGMS's coaches do NOT look fit for the job at all! They are also very stubborn when it comes to punishments, and will outright interrupt you when you try and explain your side of what happened. I myself have gotten written up to admin a few times before, for things I hadn't done, and was only at the wrong place at the wrong time for. You wanna know who wrote me up? Why the stubborn coaches of course! Special Education seems very lackluster to me as well. While I myself am not in SpecEd, I know a kid who's in it and he often complains that he's treated like he can't do anything without a helper. While he may need a helper for some things, me and him know that he can do many things by himself. The school environment also isn't safe at all. Code Yellows are semi regular occurrences and these new metal detectors installed recently have many security holes in them. When it comes to mental health support, the school has a pretty good guidance counselor although I almost never her mentioned. All in all, this school is not very good and I'd suggest really taking a good look at everything about it before sending your kid here.

As a student here at John Griffen middle my expense has been horrible. I have had teachers yell at me in class because I was smiling also teachers do not grade and when they do they dont follow the standards that are given. As a AIG and straight A student when we go to the AIG class we dont do anything that is more fun or extra it is still just worksheets and I think it should be more like puzzles to make our brain work. So to summarize this school it has bullying, unhelpful teachers, and does not help with people who are in need of special care.

I have experience with this school as an educator and as a parent. The environment at this school is harmful to students and teachers alike. I had 3 students in 8th, 7th, and 6th grade in the last 3 years at this school. Firstly, there is absolutely no accountability for the students, parents, teachers, and most of all, the administration. Class sizes in 6th grade are pressing 34-36 on each team. Consequences have been diminished to silent lunch for theft greater than $1000 or physical/verbal bullying, or fighting. As for inclusive classrooms, students with special needs (including blindness) are left with little support as the county only has a small team of VI ( visual impairment) specialists. Teachers are expected to make accommodations for students even outside of their training (teachers). I removed my students from this school after my direct experience as an educator. Teachers yell at students, demean them in front of their peers, administration is over extended and lack proper training, and students and parents are not informed of the true culture and chaos going on behind great data. The academic data does not reflect the toxicity and the fact that this school is title 1 in an affluent area makes little sense. We, as a community, should be trying to change this situation. However, there are so many people accepting this harmful behavior at all levels. The children deserve better.

I have so much to say, I dont even know where to begin. I dont think I can fully encompass it all. I have put two older kids through JGMS previously. I have watched the school decline drastically in the two years my youngest child has been in attendance, both academically and environmentally. There is almost no behavior standard upheld anymore. Bullying is VERY common and little to no action is taken in response. Students are blatantly disrespectful and uncooperative with teachers, again with little to no action taken in response. Which of course, only fosters such behavior. As a parent who sits in on my childs classes from time to time, I have personally witnessed teachers publicly ridiculing students in front of their peers. Also, when did it become acceptable for teachers to yell at students and craft an environment that makes kids feel anything but safe? I guess we can see why the kids behave the way they do. There is virtually no communication between teachers and parents. My son wound up a full two grade levels behind in math and though I tried talking to his teachers multiple times (6th and 7th grades), they always made it seem like he was just lazy. When he tried asking for help, the teacher wouldnt engage with him and he was told to go online and watch the instructional video again. He had already watched it and still didnt understand. At JGMS, you could rename teachers to babysitters because in my experience, only a small percentage of the teachers on staff actually teach these days. There is a VERY serious misuse of the Canvas platform the district has adopted with teachers not giving credit for completed assignments unless the student take a picture and uploads it, essentially doing the teachers job. A childs grade should be reflective of their academic ability, not whether they took a photo. Its unacceptable. In addition, some teachers use zeros as placeholders, which makes it impossible to know where your child is actually at academically. Every teacher utilizes Canvas differently and the confusion is immense. I would not recommend this school to my worst enemy and have already applied to private school so I can get my kid out of JGMS for good. If you want to be in this school district (I have two kids at the high school and its great), I recommend you get a house that zones you for the other middle school.

Do students feel excited about what they are learning here?
No, they actually make the student want to avoid learning. The school only cares about test scores, and the same with the teachers. And, the teachers teach in the same way every day. They aren't even trying to make school fun in the slightest.

Does the school care about the student's well being?
No, they only care if the test scores are high. Grades are all that matter here, nothing else.

Does the school provide those in special education with the support they require?
No. As an AIG (Academically and intellectually gifted) student, I know they don't care. With AIG, they put extra lessons and work in the curriculum. With an IEP, they treat students like they aren't aware of anything. Schools need to understand an IEP is not given because of a lack of intelligence. I was a former IEP student, but in my old school, they helped with my speech problems, my reading issues, math, and anything else I needed. They had a different curriculum for each student. Now, everyone has the same curriculum, special education or not. For AIG students, they have fun pullouts (which you learn in too) but only once every 2 weeks.

Is the school safe?
No, a shooting has happened here before in my time here. This isn't the schools fault, but the school is a place where fights, shootings, and drugs are common.

Does the school involve families?
Most of the time, the child's family knows nothing of what they do in school. No emails or messages telling what's going on in school.

Be very careful when considering this school! DO NOT let the high test scores fool you. Its ALL they care about. They stifle independence and discourage kids from actually having an opinion. Its been awful! Being a girl is hard! Being a girl in middle school, even harder Id say! But being a girl in a public school nowadays is almost impossible! Our daughter was dress coded today for wearing a knit/crochet sweater with a tank top under it to school. Apparently if you look close enough you can see her shoulders through the tiny holes! Since when do shoulders cause a distraction to learning? And Im pretty sure you cant really even see my daughters shoulders through this sweater! She has again been dress coded for leggings and a skirt.
Im outraged, disappointed and honestly disgusted that my daughter has to grow up in this kind of world!
I send my daughter to public school to learn, to grow, to learn to be more independent and to continue to build her self esteem through learning. I send her to public school because I want her to know that there are all kinds of people out there, to know how to learn to respect and get along with others. I send her to public school for an education that is to be taught by educators. How are these educators teaching when they are busy patrolling the kids for what they are wearing? She was made to feel ashamed of what she was wearing. Since when did body shaming become part of teaching!Instead my daughter is not able to focus on her studies and all the things mentioned above, she has to sacrifice her comfort because apparently her body is a distraction?!?!

With all the headlines and attention about sexual harassment and assault against women today Id hope that we would want to teach our young men at an early age that it is NEVER OK regardless of what a young lady is wearing .

Im sad tonight that my 12 year old daughter was made to feel ashamed of what she had chosen to wear to school. Im sad tonight that my 12 year old daughter has to worry every morning about what she wears and what her body looks like. Like we as women dont already struggle with that?!?!
Im sad tonight that this ridiculous dress code exists in the year 2018 and that parents have not successfully gotten it changed.

Racism and favoritism is highly prevalent at this school. They give harsher punishments to black males than others. They are petty, major in the minors and the teachers are quick to chastise instead of caring for the students. If you are not an "A" student you will be ignored. The only reasons why I didn't give this school a terrible rating is because they are organized, inform you of any announcements and changes and there are a few good teachers. Overall, I'm looking for another school for my son to attend. It's a joke here!! Please don't move in the district like I did expecting the cream of the crop. JGMS is not the school to be at.

I love that JGMS pushes the children to be responsible for their actions and schoolwork. I admire the teacher's perseverance and tenacity in a thankless job.

The only issue I have with JGMS is in developing a plan for my son who has adhd. I can only speak to my experience but I felt a big push back from the staff person responsible for making that happen. That said, they did agree to implementing classroom measures to help him such as giving extra time on tests, etc. His grades did improve through the year. However, the downside to no written plan is this year he will have a new set of teachers and because there is no written plan, it will be like starting anew. Additionally, I have read the transition from 8th grade to 9th grade will be very hard if no plan is in place. His doctor has recommended several times he needs the plan - just telling school staff that recommendation hasn't moved the process forward. This year I will go with a letter from the doctor. Additionally, my son is being tested at Haymount Institute, so there will be an official diagnosis. I do believe that when this happens JGMS will be on board. From what I hear this fight is typical across the border and not limited to JGMS. Doesn't make it right but it just is what it is....

In the past at another school, my son was bullied - it was a nightmare to get the school to acknowledge the behavior. I am concerned about the complaints on this page of sexual harassment, bullying and race issues at JGMS. I know it is hard to monitor every moment as a teacher. My son has stated there is bullying and racism at the school. I don't know how extensive it is but a little is too much.

As a parent, I do feel it is my responsibility to teach my son how important it is to speak up if he sees this type of behavior happening. But at this age, it is very hard to convince a student to speak up. And it is the school's responsibility to make the atmosphere safe.

Overall, I am satisfied with JGMS and their management of my child's education. I chose where I lived based on Jack Britt's reputation and am thankful JGMS was a part of the deal! I want my son to be prepared for high school and college. I would recommend JGMS to others.

This school has high test scores but when it comes to the kids the teachers tend target certain students and favor others. And teachers are often bias when it comes to race. Often students of color are reprimanded more, and given harsher punishments. But then others are allowed to do as they please within the school or only get slaps on the wrist. This school has many race issues that are reported by students but are never dealt with, and often ignored. The teachers also don't care about if the students are actually learning as long as the score high on E.O.Gs. The principles and teachers also fail to deal with harrassment, sexual harrassment, bullying, assault, sexual assult, and race issues. Any problems have always been swept under the rug. And unless it comes from a white child nothing will be done about the issues. I would not recommend this school as a parent of children who have spent all of middle school here

Do not waste your time. This school when looked at from someone who hasn't done their research would see how appealing it is academically wise but it is not all cut out to what it tries to show. As a former parent of multiple kids who have attended this school, I have to say it has been far worse compared to the other schools they have attended. The faculty did not deal with any of my children's problems when reported and I asked my children if their friends had the same problem and they agreed. I have communicated to other parents who have or had children attend this school and they agree on the lack of support that the children had when it came to addressing a problem. Almost all kid's situations and problems were dealt with briefly but immediately disregarded afterwards. Bullying and racism is a major problem within this school that has had no improvement whatsoever. Kids who racially oppressed others were not dealt with at all and were let free to ruin p.o.c's day. Teachers did absolutely nothing about this problem and let it go nonchalantly. Also, the learning strategy of this school is terrible. Constantly every week the school was giving them tests from the county to the point of over stressing all the children's minds. Breaks were never given. This entire school revolves around e.o.g's instead of just the joy of learning in general. Everything always had to deal with practicing for the end of grade test. The faculty needs to get itself together and help solve these problems. Everytime a kid reported a problem, they would immediately dismiss it and would only deal with it if the parent was forceful and determined to get the problem fixed. Other then that, I will for surely not be recommending this school.

We have one child at JGMS and another who will be here next year. The school is ran very well, the teachers have all been professional so far. Looking forward to this upcoming year. Take the time to volunteer when you can, even if you work full time you can probably find some time. Stay involved in your child's school life. It makes a huge difference.

This school my have good test scores but are these kids being taught to the test or learning. Well, I can attest to the fact that they are being taught to the test is this how we want are children to learn. In New York parents are protesting this type of learning and demanding better for their children and why should we except less here in NC. Not every child can be scored by standardized testing (children are not standardized)! Teachers as far as I can remember are suppose to be a person children feel comfortable confiding in not at JGMS. The Assistant Principal is far from friendly, kind,or caring all things that that should be required in any Principal. Along with test scores, there is the issue of harsh punishment, yet this does not apply to all. The bullying situation is pushed under the rug, the administration there I believe has no clue what to do in regards to the bullying. The upper administration of this school act as if they can do what ever they want and answer to no one, that is very scary.

AMAZING school with AMAZING teachers!! I have been nothing but impressed with this school and the support of the teachers. Yes we have had some teachers that I have had to talk with about some issues, but these were resolved without having to go any further. Any issues or concerns have always been dealt with right away with great support.

This school is not all that it's cracked up to be. Is someone paying somebody else to get great reviews & test scores 'cause we surely didn't see that at JGMS?! A lot of other parents I talked to at JGMS also agreed. Granted it does have its fair share of good teachers, but it also has its share of not so good ones that you have to wonder why they're even teaching ($)--at our children's expense. I couldn't agree more with the post on 11/17/13 & 6/3/13 as my child has experienced a totally different atmosphere at PFMS after leaving JGMS. I do have to say that JGMS will be getting one of the best science teachers around next year in Ms. Bragg since she is leaving PFMS due to proximity to home. Those that get her will have one of the best! Besides, Jack Britt/ JGMS are at least 30-40mins from Ft. Bragg area, if you work there. You should really check out the Pine Forest area if working at Bragg. Greatly surprised and pleased there. JGMS did have dances for the kids, which was nice. No PTA/O and strict (sometimes to extreme). Should have gone by our gut feeling when we first visited as one of the asst. principal's was yelling loudly at a child & didn't even close door.

We recently moved to the area after hearing how wonderful the schools are and how they are the best in the county. If you are looking at test scores, yes they are higher than some other schools, but that comes with a price. This school runs an extremely tight ship and literally spent about the first week of school going over all the rules/ punishments. My kids were scared to death, to the point where they were afraid to turn in club applications or AG testing papers in the morning because they may get in trouble for not going straight to their class. It has been very difficult for them to make friends due to all the rules and lack of any type of social time. They even spend lunch at assigned seating with teachers. There is no PTA or PTSA at this school which is a red flag. I don't feel they are very open to parent involvement and honestly don't care about the emotional well being of the kids, only the test scores. I'm not impressed by the administration and feel that only a handful of teachers are actually teaching the children. NC by far doesn't have the best education system. I wish we had looked elsewhere and will be pulling our kids out. Way too overcrowded!

Great academics....but some of the teachers disregard anything a student may say (even the good students), some teachers forget to collect/grade/record work assignments and are very quick to give a "zero grades" on progress reports. Some teachers even act worse than the student for example..getting and putting hands in students faces. I regards to the 8th grade class this school only validates the student that earned straight "A' ALL year...so if you earned a B at any point you do NOT receive an End-of-the-Year Award Ceremony. As a parent that is very disappointing that this school only values the academic aspect of a student and not the student moral. Glad she is of to HS.

This is an excellent school with great teacher quality. One of our sons attended a few years ago, and we have one attending now. The academic program seems to have improved, and parent involvement is encouraged. The environment is positive, and students are provided with good direction. This school tops the test standards in many areas, and is above the state and county averages which speaks for itself.
