I am a current sophomore at MHCHS. Let me tell you, This school is a game changer. I'm not saying that because I go here, im saying it because it's true. During middle school, I was never interested into doing schoolwork, never passed tests, it was chaos. But when I came to massey my freshman year, everything was a turn around. I wasn't fond of uniforms but now I absolutely enjoy them!! The teachers and staff at massey are wonderful. Great balance between academics and fine arts. As a fine arts student, I can say if you're interested in choir, orchestra, band, art, etc, this is the school for you! If you want a school with a high graduation rate, lots of AP classes, and extracurriculars. This school is FOR YOU! I've been in orchestra since my 5th grade year, and the teacher at massey just made the experience so much better. I don't have band or choir but I can assure those are awesome teachers as well!! So is art, and even the world languages, but hey, as stated before all staff and teachers are wonderful. And even the students! Small population but we are most definitely one big family. AND HUGGGEEE PLUS, Absolutely NO fights whatsoever. Yes there will be drama, we're teens, it's expected. But it's not expected at massey :)

My son is a Junior at MHCHS, and the past 3 years have been an absolutely amazing experience for him at this school. He has thrived academically and socially. He's involved in their top-notch theater program and has performed in mutiple incredible, award winning productions. He is also a member of the choir and has grown so immensely as a singer under the MHCHS choir program leadership that he was selected for the highly competitive State Honors Choir. The teachers at this school are brilliant and truly care about all of the students. The test scores prove this, as we know that students thrive in such an environment. One of the biggest "kudos" I can give is the accommodations and understanding they provide regarding my son's disability. He is visually impaired and each teacher does everything he/she can do to make it so that he has the same opportunities to learn, despite his limitations, as the average sighted students. I truly believe that, because of this school, my son will have better opportunities offered to him for his future than he would have received had he gone to another high school. Finally, because of the loving, accepting environment at this school, between all the students and staff, this is not the place where students are bullied or fear/dislike going to school. There has never been a morning when my son didn't want to go, which was not the case before he started coming here. He enjoys being around everyone and has fun learning. If you don't consider Massey Hill, you are seriously missing out on a life-changing experience for your child!

Massey Hill is a Choice School in the County. (Apps to attend usually due by Jan.) Students are eclectic & many are advanced learners/over achievers/gifted & LIKE learning.The student/teacher ratios are very low.

Downsides:
- Transportation (school bus) is not provided (unless you live on Ft. Liberty).

- Special Ed: their weakest point. If have an IEP & minimal needs, they’ll likely be ok. But consensus seems to be you must keep tabs & be consistent when things go left. (Frankly, the entire school district is poor for EC kids.)

- Sports - There are none. But students can participate in sports at the school their home is districted for. (For on-post this is EE Smith HS). Be sure to contact the home school directly and be persistent.

- Hate to point out one specific person/position, but it’s important. The counselor who works with students deciding a career field or post-secondary education lacks. To be fair, they are the only counselor and have 300’ish students (55-65 per class) & have not been out of college long. If something small or pointed is needed, you’re good. But parents be prepared to tackle this yourself.

- Family engagement: they’re trying! Much improved over last few years!

Neutrals:
- the surrounding area. Don’t be put off by the appearance and “talk” of the area. It’s still tying to rid of a reputation from the 80’s - 10’s. Security at the school is paramount.

- Physical building - know the building is 100 years old. It’s well cared for, but expect all that comes with such.

- Uniforms: love ‘em or hate em. They are required. Prices are reasonable, but not inexpensive. The school hasn’t quite figured out how to make buying a smooth process. But you can buy “unbranded” pieces from wherever.

Positives:
- Teachers & administration - #1 They are very supportive & understanding with students. Turnover is very low and that says a LOT about the entire school. There are a few teachers that are a bit hard to get ahold of, a couple that prefer to post grades every couple weeks versus daily, but your student isn’t likely to be plagued with this more than once per semester. And if needed, a quick email to admin will straighten things out.

- If a student is “weird”, they’re just that. Nobody cares. Few students pick on them. In fact, they’re likely to find a friend or two who is also “weird.” Bullying is not tolerated by students & squashed.

- Drugs and shenanigans - don’t bring that mess to The Hill! It’s not tolerated AT ALL.

Overall I have been satisfied with this school for my child. I have read through some of the other reviews and do not fully agree with much of what has been stated. In regards to the Social Studies teacher Lee Francis, he was immediately removed from the school and after an investigation, his employment with the county was terminated. My child was in attendance at this school during this time and I think the situation was handled appropriately and that administration kept parents informed throughout the process.
My child has had many opportunities to develop leadership skills with the student government and school projects, to include fundraising for student activities. I think the staff is doing a great job preparing my child for college and they have already provided two college tours. They also offer free afterschool tutoring and provide the ACT on campus for free.
This is not a perfect school, I do not believe there is a perfect school, there are some issues with dress code violations, but I do believe the administration has been vigilant in her quest to rectify them. I also like that the administration is visible both in the community and in the school building, she shows up at after-school events and makes herself available to parents upon request. She also does a great job voicing her support of the staff to parents and students alike.

Horrible experience my child had their. It all starts with horrible administration. Just read the Pam The Principal's opening letter on the website. It's like a child wrote it. The teachers who shouldn't be teaching, like Lee Francis who step on our flag as an "example" of free speech. Should be fired as an "example" of an unprofessional and disrespectful POS.

If you truly care about your children and their education this choice school is a bad one. The administration only cares about the numbers at the end of the year. Your child's safety is the least of their concerns. The principal boasts of having the least fights of any school in the district but this school also has less than 1/3 the amount of students. Fights that do occur the administration calls "horse play" and then they don't have to report it to the superintendent's office. Even if this was not the case the mark of how safe a school is should not be how many fights happen. Bullying is rampant but just as quickly dismissed by the administration. In fact if you do dare to report it be warned in advance the principal's first reaction is to defend the accused. The curriculum is very limited and they compensate for it by requiring more than the county guidelines to graduate from this school. Maybe this would be fine if the courses were more than basic classes but they are not. They use their required courses to justify just how truly limited their course offering is.

When we were here we were a bit disappointed that it wasn't truly a "Classical Education". There seemed to be some problems with curriculum and some of the educators were horrible. Thank goodness my kids survived. We moved to a much better state and they are getting a much better education to finish up their high school years.

I attended this school near the tail end of the 2000s. I found my experiences from this school to have prepared me tremendously for college. I was even able to keep up with private high school graduates easily in undergrad and I was not even near the top of my class at Massey Hill. That's how academically rigorous our graduating class was. Its not perfect, no school is unless you're willing to shell out a ton of cash but this school was more than enough to prepare me for college as a STEM graduate. The best part was that it was all FREE as a classical public school. Majority of the teachers go above and beyond the call, the student atmosphere is relatively laid back and I am glad to have had such a focused education. I would strongly recommend this school for any parent who would like their child to obtain a high quality education for free that will prepare them for university level work. This school is essentially a public school with private school quality.
