This school actually sucks so bad, like every other day my aluminum cologne bottle sets the metal detector off and I get flagged down like I’m carrying a bomb and then plastic water bottles set the detector off “cause of shape” like I could literally be at class but you’re checking my whole bag over the “shape” of a plastic water bottle but then kids still manage to sneak vapes and knives in with no problem. And don’t get me started on the teaching, most teachers here are absolutely rude for no reason and I don’t get why they get so pressed over everything, like in one of my classes my teacher is always calling me out whether it’s for a good or bad reason and I DO NOT like it. There’s so many other things about this school that make me have genuine hate running through my blood. DO NOT come here.

As a 8th grader who was here during the school year 2024-2025 i feel like the school got more better but there was still fights some teachers don’t care about there positions the 8th grade assistant principal is a big problem and only takes on white kids.

The past two years, Riverwood has undergone a significant transformation. Current administration is excellent. I feel engaged as a parent and well informed. We receive weekly newsletters, counselors respond within hours of emailing, I have frequent communication with the principals who are helpful in our daughter’s day to day. Our daughter is AIG and has had excellent teachers who focus on hands on projects and work rather than computer based modules. We have had no issues with bullying, although bullying issues are siloed to a school, grade, or class. It’s an issue in every middle school across the nation. I feel the counselors, teachers, and admin are highly engaged and involved, and I feel if we had an issue, they would take it seriously.

We do wish there were more clubs and extracurriculars.

I am an incoming 9th grader as of this summer. All of the administrators are dictators; human necessities like going to the bathroom or to the nurse are denied. Punishments for petty "crimes" or acts rather are ridiculously harsh and half of the teachers do not teach. (mind you, coming from an A+ student.) Bullying is harsh and staff do nothing about it. Equity is also terrible, consisting of just about half of the school being privileged white kids, for those of color concerned about this aspect of the school. As someone who's been to 8 different schools, this one is by far the worst i've attended. I would not recommend this school to any student or parents of students.

This school is horrible, the bullying is extreme and they don't do anything about it, I’ve had meetings and nothing has been done. But even worse, teachers humiliate the students and the staff cover each other’s heads.

There is also zero communication with the teachers when an academic situation is happening. Would not recommend to have your kids attend this school.

Posted: February 6, 2019

Posted: February 6, 2019

Some of the teachers are polite but we've had numerous teachers who were rude to the kids and just today I was in the office and saw a teacher talking down to a student. They seem to be encouraged to use very negative means such as verbally humiliating kids in class to keep control. There is also an incredibly high rate of teacher turnover. We've lived in several states and I've never seen rates of turnover like this school has.

Posted: February 6, 2019

They alternate from having no control over the kids to too much control over the kids and I've seen too many teachers talking down to them for the kids to be learning anything about character.

Posted: February 6, 2019

The principal talks down to you and there is no communication on important issues. My child's bus was in an accident on the way to school and the police were even called to the scene but there were no phone calls home. The only way I knew about it at all was because my child told me about it when they got home.

Posted: February 6, 2019

Very negative. This is the second year my child as attended the school and I sincerely wish I'd changed schools last year. I'm just grateful they'll be at the high school next year.

Posted: January 28, 2019

They refuse to make accommodations and will state that teachers do all of the things requested already. They do not.

Posted: January 28, 2019

Do a simple search on facebook and see for yourself. Children being jumped and beaten in the hallways. No repercussions for any of the bullies. Even when a child is hospitalized.

Posted: January 28, 2019

Horrible. As long as Jamie Stoke is principal, avoid this school. Avoid Kristen Williams also. Ineffective leadership, lack of transparency, horrible educational standards and complete lack of professionalism from staff.

Posted: January 28, 2019

Teachers do not care about students. The homework assigned often has little to do with the subject

Posted: January 28, 2019

Teachers are apathetic. They don't adequately report progress. Some classes, grades are missing for months and teachers do NOT teach out to parents if there's a problem.

Posted: January 28, 2019

Horrible problems with bullying and fighting amongst students. And teachers and staff gossip exactly like the students.

Posted: January 12, 2019

One complaint sent in about a teacher was not responded to for months.

Posted: January 12, 2019

There seems to be little to no homework assigned, however during holiday breaks emails come from teacher for the students to sign in and complete an assignment. Consistensy is needed.

Posted: January 12, 2019

Both of my kids are honor roll students, but both say they feel many of their teachers are not teaching. Glad to see new science teacher this year and a particularly bad science teacher was moved to another subject.

Posted: January 12, 2019

Posted: January 12, 2019

Safety has been a top priority! Thank you. However it seems all students are punished for the actions of a few.

Posted: January 12, 2019

Teachers are forced to deal with disruptive students too often during class, sometimes those students that do well are ignored and not challenged because the teachers are spending so much time with disruptive students

Posted: January 12, 2019

Posted: August 24, 2018

This school is awful. They get good ratings based on some good test scores and probably not many suspensions, but the education is far from rigorous, bullying is ignored, and my special ed kid might as well stay home. MANY parents have already pulled their Sped kids to homeschool because this place is so bad.

Posted: August 24, 2018

Mundane, repetitive, busywork is often what is assigned.

Posted: August 24, 2018

Some teachers are fine, but many are lazy. My kids watch way too many videos, both youtube and movies while the teachers sit. The education is much worse than it was up north. My kids say they can tell the teachers who are here only for a paycheck.

Posted: August 24, 2018

This school does not teach tolerance or acceptance. They are way behind the times.

Posted: August 24, 2018

You can talk repeatedly to admins for issues with special needs, bullying, teachers not teaching the curriculum and showing too many movies. They do NOTHING>

Posted: August 24, 2018

They are so far behind the times in teaching kids with disabilities. They are treated as 2nd class citizens and don't have a chance for success at this school.

Posted: August 24, 2018

My daughter was bullied for years and nothing was done about it. She was hit, kicked, pulled down the hall by her feet, and all they did was "talk" to the other students.

If you want your kid to be in band, this is not the school for you. Once the previous band teacher left ( Ms. Weaver) the new band teacher could not teach any of the students. The 8th grade band is playing on a 6th grade level. When Ms. Weaver was there, the now 8th grade band was playing on a 7th and 8th grade level. Once again, if your child is a musician, do not send him/her to this school.

Ms. Weaver, you will be missed.

I think River wood is a good school, but if the teachers would communicate with the parent it would be better. My only issue in that the Teachers are not will to partner with the parent who really want their children to learn. Mrs. Evan the 6th principal is awesome, but I cant say that about her Six grade teachers. I'm not trying to be negative I'm just speaking from my own experience. In anything, there always room for improvement..

Posted: March 3, 2014

I went to Riverwood a few years ago; I'm in high school now. It's sort of gotten stricter and stricter as the years have gone on. When I was there, I didn't have much choice of electives and took gym every year, while some of my friends didn't take gym until high school because of band. Even now, things have gotten stricter. They were really serious about food and drink in the classroom because my seventh grade year, some kids were drinking vodka in their water bottles. It was kind of odd, putting all the kids who lived in the Riverwood neighborhoods and the outskirted kids together in this kind of mixture. I haven't seen my friends who I went to middle school with because of the way the districts divided. It's all very odd. Regardless, it wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that great either.

Posted: December 10, 2013

My son is a 7th grade student at Riverwood and things have been very smooth since he started in 6th grade. Good communication and action from the administration for the few minor problems we have had. Very responsive action from teachers about any of my concerns. The parent portal allows me to access my son's grades and to look over assignments and is very helpful. Good communication as far as notices being sent home. I do not know why a few other people gave bad reviews and talked about not knowing how much lunches are. The school sends a packet home which explains EVERYTHING and phone calls go out to all parents at least twice per week about upcoming events and anything that parents should be aware of. I have never heard that bullying is an issue (not saying that is doesn't happen) and my son has not experienced or told me anything that has happened regarding fights or bullying so we don't have concerns about that. The only problem that I have is that the school can be too strict at times. Otherwise, it is a great school.

Posted: April 17, 2013

This school is an absolute disgrace. Bullying is extreme with no action being taken to correct after countless meetings with teachers, prinicpal and superintendent. Lack of interest from the teachers on student improvement, Lack of communication by teachers. Since day one at this school we have experienced weekly issues, with students and faculty. Its not my child as I have talked with numerous other parents encountering the same problems. Everyday my child goes to school feeling defeated and counting down the days until we are done at Riverwood! The bad children run this school and adminstration seems to be scared of them or clueless on appropriate discipline. They bribe the "problem students" if you behave you can get free time and cell phone use during free time while the "behaved children" are made to stay in class. If your student needs tutoring, Good luck getting it, teachers are too "busy", but dont worry they will find one of the nice kids who bullies your kid to review the lessons with them, WHAT A JOKE!

Posted: February 18, 2013

This school is very unsatisfactory. The rules are too harsh on the students and the staff does not work hard enough to improve the school or the experience that the students have. The teachers and staff do not do enough to crack down on bullying, either.

Posted: January 8, 2013

Poor leadership, teachers who spend a lot of time showing movies and having free time. Not very rigorous education compared to where we came from. Science teacher has no idea how to teach science-admits it to kids. Very strict-kids not even allowed to bring a water bottle-in NC, where it is often hot! They have to carry around backpacks, gym uniforms & shoes, coats-cant go to lockers during the day-how safe is a mass of kids w/ stuffed bags? Oops-forgot to add: there is NO communication from the school for parents. Our old school sent home a packet in the summer with a schedule, fees, lunch program & prices, etc. NOTHING! Still don't know cost of lunch, if we'd pay cash or how it works-my kid is shy and won't ask, but why is no information sent home? The good: Kids are not as snobby as where we came from-big plus. With a new leader, this school could be much better.
