James Monroe was a terrible school. There was a lack of communication from teachers and staff, rude administrators and office employees, and terrible educational practices.

In my experience teachers will teach one way and one way only. If you don’t understand they will only repeat what you just told them you didn’t understand. There are few teachers that actually care about their students, many of the teachers clearly hate their job and the students and indirectly say so. The school also has very poor planning as many teachers just get moved around mid school year and the students have a hard time because many subs don’t know how to teach the subject are aren’t provided anything to teach the kids. Also sometimes it seems like the teachers and administrators care more about if you have a hole in your jeans than your education and learning. The school doesn’t even do anything about bullying. I have seen many people express many times that someone was bothering them but nothing was done even when the teachers watch them purposely hurt others.

Saying this school is a rotten hellhole is an understatement. Each day is filled with bullying, boring lectures, and pointless lessons. Most work seems like pointless irritating busywork or a massive project with poor instructions. At this point the only thing keeping me going is the weekend. A lot of the teachers seem to despise this place as much as I do. There has pretty much been a fight every week and you get detention if you even see one. DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are some good kids here but unfortunately they are trumped by bad apples. During the 5th grade tour of the school the experience was very sad. Kids were very disrespectful, yelling and cursing at the 5th grade students and no teacher could be bothered.

Concerns are not addressed. If student has a zero because they don't understand the work or have given up they can receive assistance because they must have current grades to show they are struggling but all prior work before student began to fail or give up is irrelevant.

If there's a problem with bullying little will be done or they can both go to detention.

I'm sure there has to be a few good teachers here but I can tell you after all the years here we have not ran into more than one or two.
What we have come across were teachers with far too many students and not enough care our drive for their students to succeed

Too much homework, not enough communication, homework assigned also doesn't seem to be very productive and more of mundane busy work

If you dont have an IEP you get no support. If struggle to learn in the lecture format that is too bad for your student.

We had no experience with bullying, which is surprising since he transferred in midyear. He would have been a prime candidate for it.

The school has a victim mentality. Basically because they cannot retain students they dont have any practices in place to ensure students participate in their education besides failing them.

There is no follow up. There is no proactive attention to students who are struggling. The administration failed to follow up with us after sharing our concerns. They also refused to do anything to help my student.

If your child isn't performing they will not reach out to you and strategize with you about how to help your student. They believe posting grades online is authentic communication about your child. They dont provide constructive feedback on how the child could improve with out you begging for the information.

Out of the 10 teachers maybe 4 of them actually wanted to actually help my child transition intothe school. The rest completely ignored him. The counselor and the vice principal also failed to see that he was struggling and also failed to do anything. They basically left it to a 13 year old to self diagnose and come up with solutions to his struggles.

It was an awful experience. I would rate this school a 4. There are a few amazing teachers but we also experienced several teachers who only teach one way and if you dont learn that way too bad. We had 2 teachers retire mid semester and had to deal with long term subs in specialized elective classes who had no training in those subjects.

I hate this school! i would come home everyday with a story about how i was ether punched, kicked, or both!! No teacher wanted to help me! I hate this school and you should NEVER send your child here!

My son received a suspension for a rip on his pants. So instead of sending a note home, a phone call, etc. they rather he misses valuable class time. He was also struggling with his studies but meetings were useless. A lot of the time teachers never showed up! At one of the meetings that some teachers actually attended one teacher stated that they were not worried about his reading and spelling because.... everything has spell check! All while the other either laughed or said that was right. Wow! Terrible school! The Dean was a nightmare to speak with, very rude. If you can I would take your children elsewhere until this whole district is overhauled.

Ms. Sichcler is the type of principal that doesn't deal with issues directly with the parents. She has others do her "dirty work" for her. Students who are blamed for something even when no proof of wrongdoing is given, will be demonized and targeted throughout the school year. BEWARE!!! This school is more concerned about the dress code and having an I.d. than about whether or not the students are progressing and succeeding. Please do not send your student to this school that feels like a prison!!! You WILL regret it!

As a deaf mother to 3 hearing daughters. My eldest daughter just got her 8th grade promotion ceremony and is ready heading to Cibola High School as a freshman coming up in this Fall 2015. My second daughter will be starting as 6th grade at James Monroe Middle School coming up in this Fall 2015. At first, I was having little troubles with communication with staffs and teachers at JMMS but it came out pretty good since we had worked out together to make efforts with the communications regarding with my eldest daughter who was a student during her 3 years at JMMS. Mrs. Sichler, the assistant principal are being wonderful and she made sure that I get the interpreters for any events, student lead conferences and any concerns regarding with education/school. Mr. Martinez runs school with some strict policies and made sure that students are getting good educations. We the parents, get the email occassionally with any events, anything related with schools so we don't feel left out which it's a great community supports. I do support the clothing policies which it is more easier do that. They do bend few things that are letting students to wear. My eldest daughter has been in Honor Roll for three years and has involved in National Junior Honor Society. I have seen my daughter being so happy at JMMS plus involved into clubs and Razzle Dazzle Dance Team. My second daughter is looking forward to go to JMMS. To let you know that Mr. Martinez has accepted a principal job at McKinley Middle School so we will have a new principal for JMMS for school year of 2015-2016. Don't let the rating and any negative comments affect you regarding with your child (children)'s education. You will know once you see with your own eyes. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with staffs, teachers, education and others at JMMS.

Honestly when I met the principal Vernon Martinez he has a low level of manners and has a bad attitude. You will never see him smile (for future students) and he ignores many complaints. So be aware of the negativity that stays there

The principal from this school is a lunatic !!! Disrespectful person who doesn't listen to a parent concern! Fire this guy! Several parents complaining about this individual. He apparently has no business been a principal. What a shame have an administrator like this one. Vernon Martinez you should go back to school yourself to learn serious manners ! I never in my entire life met an administrator so negative and an office staff extremely rude! What a shame !

This is a awful school. Principal is just a bully. I want communication from the teachers about my child's progress. Principal did not want to hear about it. They send 10 emails about cake auctions fundraising etc but nothing on my child. The school needs a new administrator and one that cares about the students not just the money.

JMMS is an excellent school. Principal Martinez runs a tight ship and has high expectations for staff and students. He responds ina timely and respectful manner to parent concerns and he (or Ms. Sichler, the great Assistant Principal), attend all the home and away athletic games to ensure positive behavior and good sportsmanship. Every teacher my sons' have had have been excellent communicators, provide challenging and innovative curriculums, and demonstrate support for struggling students. The office staff is courteous and efficient, the cafeteria staff is super, too! The PE program is phenomenal, with opportunities for all students to succeed! The PTSA provides numerous opportunities for parental involvement, as well. Even the custodial staff is friendly and keeps the campus in pristine condition; a true relection of school-wide pride. I am very pleased with JMMS and the education my children are recieving there! Go Rators!

James Monroe is a great school. The teachers strive to give students the best education possible. The school works to teach students appropriate self-discipline and accountability as well as a rigorous academic curriculum. There are always going to be times when a student, a parent or a teacher encounters a problem; but in those cases it is important for all parties to try to work together to come up with a solution. The students are learning and making progress and there are many positive opportunities for students and families to be involved with the school.
