This school provides a very serious environment for students who see us as an alternative to the past schools they have attended, where they were formerly unsuccessful. We are strong in our commitment to credit recovery and solid instruction especially in the core areas of Language Arts, Math, and Sciences.

Cesar Chavez scored 63.6% in reading on the state test last year, a very high score for schools that serve at-risk students. There are 4 teaching assistants, or support staff, working in the classrooms; all 4 have four-year college degrees ; one of those has a master's degree and another is now a licensed teacher. The single administrator who serves as principal and director of the school, who opened the school and has served the school for 7 years, is paid slightly higher than the state minimum for a high school principal. Teachers work as a very high-performing with individual and team planning time, spending many hours figuring out how to best meet the needs of their students. This charter and others provide choice for students and parents who have experienced problems and failures in traditional, big schools. Charters are not in competition with the districe-charters offer more for the community.

This charter school is an example of a charter school that is succeeding in its mission of providing quality education to students that have not succeeded previously in traditional school settings. With enrollment at approximately 185 students, staff is able to provide individual attention to students and focus on strategies that will help each student succeed in high school. Administration is minimal with one principal/director, a part-time business manager, one registrar, one attendance/data coordinator, and one receptionist. Emphasis is placed on providing funding for the maximum number of classroom teachers and educational assistants in order to better serve the students. Considering the number of hard working/caring staff members at this school and it's reputation for providing a safe environment for students, I feel it provides an excellent option for students in the community.

This school is an example of what is wrong with charter schools. The administration pays itself more than an administrator from a school of 2500 students. To add more insult to it's hard working teachers, the support staff is larger than the teaching staff. They are pampered and paid enormous wages without any meaningful degrees. The teachers are given very little planning time and are expected to raise the test scores for children who are the most difficult to work with. As a result of these types of school all over the district, the larger schools' budgets are reduced and hundreds of students and teachers pay a high price. To top it all, the school's test scores are at the very bottom of all the schools. Our Dollars are waited on this school in particular.
