The new principal is much better than the principal in the past. She is present and there to talk to if you want or need to.

Posted: December 12, 2019

For the most part, my children seem to be supported well by the teachers.

Posted: December 12, 2019

Some of the teachers I have talked with feel like there is nothing they can do for a child that is a bully in their class. Nothing happens to that child, so they keep bullying. I don't think it's the teacher's faults, I think they have their hands tied.

Overall, my experience with my children at this school has been a positive one. Out of all the teachers, only one teacher was a poor choice for my child. Two have moved onto middle school, and they were very prepared for that move. Georgia O'Keeffe did a great job of preparation for moving on to middle school.

It seems that the homework amount increases as my children moved up from grade to grade. However, there is not always consistency from teacher to teacher in how much homework is given. I know this since my 3 children all had different teachers and the consistency wasn't there.

Posted: December 12, 2019

The majority of the teachers are very good and they challenge and challenged my children to be their best. They are caring and it shows in how happy my children are/were everyday.

Posted: December 12, 2019

The school has a program in place, but does it does not always seem to do a great job. I think that if a child has good character, it is coming from expectations at home. This should not be a school's job - this should be the parent's job.

The teachers at GOK were ineffective and did not care about students. Their only concern was passing the standardized test in order to keep their high ranking. Principal was not engaged and Vice Principal was inappropriate in dealing with kids without parents being present. Teachers did not care about students unless they were high achievers. The only nice part of the school is the building. Was very happy to remove my kids from this school.

Posted: August 21, 2017

Very little support for parents and kids with homework. Instructions were largely unclear and undeveloped. The aftercare program is a joke.

Posted: August 21, 2017

Teachers teach to the standardized test the students take every year. They don't explain material sufficiently. I ended up using Khan Academy to re-teach my kids what they were suppose to learn from their teachers.

Posted: August 21, 2017

Nothing in this school was about values and integrity. They do nothing to help children develop into compassionate and respectful individuals.

Posted: August 21, 2017

Principal was completely useless. Never present and did not seem to care at all about issues going on at the school. Vice Principal was present but completely incompetent when dealing with crisis.

Posted: August 21, 2017

They do what they have to do and nothing more.

Posted: August 21, 2017

They purport to have this great anti-bullying policy but the reality is they do nothing unless they have no other option. When bullying happens teachers don't care, to the point where kids are told to deal with it on their own. The school counselor-who is overworked and can't possibly handle the roughly 600 students by herself, brushes the kids off and the Vice Principal and Principal do nothing unless a parent forces the issue.

The principal tends to be absent and doesn't engage with the children often. She tends to be quite cold, almost to the point of rude.

We have been at this school for seven years and we have another five to go. We couldn't be happier with the school or its staff. All of the teachers (save one third grade teacher who everyone seems to have the same issues with) are engaging, supportive, loving, and generous with their time and resources. The families are involved. We haven't had a single issue with bullying or exclusion. We enjoy every moment at this school.

I have a child with special needs and found the school to be downright hostile toward having my child attend.

Between my three children I have 12 classroom teacher years of experience with Georgia O'Keeffe (my children are currently 6th, 3rd and 1st graders). The dedication and effectiveness of the teachers at Georgia O'Keefe is fabulous. With very few exceptions I can say that my children have had a top notch educational experience in the 6 years I have had children at the school. I am sad to see what recent issues with PARCC testing and state teacher evaluations are doing to the morale of the teachers at GOK. These teachers should be proud of their hard work and appreciated not only by the parents at GOK but the state for the exceptional job they do in educating and nurturing our children. I'm always glad to sing the praises of this school.

This is the best school my daughter has attended. Well organized. Lots of extra after school programs (although they are popular and sometimes they fill and you don't get every one you request.), field trips, dances and other outings. Lots of community involvement. Administrative staff have been nothing but friendly, informative and helpful. Natalie's 5th grade teacher is amazing and has my daughter improved in every way, not just academically, but her self esteem and confidence. They are quick to get on any social issues among the kids or bullying. Great, great school.

I am the grandmother of two second graders. Both of my grandchildren attended Georgia O'Keeffe through first grade. We had nothing but trouble with bullies and parent cliques. The school counselor was rude and uncaring toward my granddaughter who had to enter professional counseling because she was being bullied every day by a very nasty child. The bully was never properly dealt with even though he said he bullied at school because his older brother bullied him at home and threatened to kill him. The bully needed help also, but no adult was interested in reaching out. The school secretary is also quite rude and evidently thinks she is in charge of the school. The principal was never available. She was never in sight. Now our children attend a wonderful charter school. They get up happily every day to go to school and always talk about how they love their school, teachers, and school friends. The homework they are assigned is well thought out and challenges them to actually think. My granddaughter's frequent stomach aches have disappeared and she stopped biting her nails. Good riddance Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary!

The school staff in the office is rude and they gossip all the time. I am visit my child's class all the time and every time in go into the office everyone is always gossiping. Come on be professional. The principal has no clue on how to be a principal she micro manages. Instead of being in your office all the time go out and visit with the students and be caring and loving to them. Where do they find theses people to take care of our school. A cracker jack box.

GOK is an amazing school. It's been 3 wonderful years my children have been attending Georgia O'Keeffe. Great teachers, Great office staff, great nurse and so much more. Only complaint i have is the current principle isn't so friendly of welcoming. The principle before her was so friendly and always greeting students and parents. My children enjoy their day at school and are always sharing what they learned.

This is an outstanding public school in a city that does not have a reputation for quality education. The teachers do their best and granted some try a lot harder than others, but that happens everywhere in every school in the entire country. The leadership has changed and now everyone is held accountable and the test scores prove our children are learning. Am I 100% happy, no, so I stay active in making sure my voice is heard. As long as all the parents start to do that we will keep this as one of the best schools in the city. The more parents help, the better the school is. My children love going to school as should they all

GOK is an outstanding school with an exceptional staff which benefits greatly from the dedication of the parent community to education and the staff's desire to foster growth. Our two children have very different needs that have been respected with the early years being focused on a sense of family & community and the latter years preparing for middle school & independence. We moved into the school district for GOK and I haven't had one regret. The school has had leadership changes in the last two years improving the school even more.

I went to meet the teacher day and loved the teacher my student got. The classroom is right by the office and i noticed that the principal was in her office. Dont you think that she should be out greeting parents and studnets. My child has no idea who the principal is. I really hope that the assistant principal does not follow in the principals footsteps. Last year i volunteered alot and never saw the principal visiting the students or even saying hi to them in the hallway. Really not to impressed with her.

This school is the best!! I have worked at this school for more than half of my teaching years. It is a fantastic place to work. The staff members are professional and are the hardest working group of teachers I have ever worked with. The parents are supportive and help in any way that they can. They are the reason our students are so great. I love teaching at this school and never want to change to another place. Thank you all for making it such a wonderful place to be.

I have the same feeling that the girl at the reception was not friendly. Otherwise it's a great school.

I called to set up a tour and the secretary was so rude and short. Said we don't do tours I said you expect me to send my child to a school without seeing it???? I said may I please talk to the principle to gather more information. She was equally rude but started to warm up after I broke the ice. She said good luck because transfers are lottery and I already have 41 requests.. What is with these old women that are so jaded and grumpy. You expect children to have manners where are yours.

This school is amazing! My kindergartener and second grader love it. Their teachers are wonderful and the focus on academics/curriculum are outstanding.

Posted: August 12, 2012

NO homework, no art classes, the secretary is very, very , very rude. That turned me off right away. She has been there forever, why? I am not impressed. The first day was play, waste of time.

I rated this school above average for academics. Compared to our friends who have children in other public schools I feel our child has learned more and is more advanced in his studies. Aside from the academics, we we do not feel the nuturing from the teachers, as I read from another review. However, we've spoken to other parents and they disagree so I think it has to do with the teacher we were assigned to. Also, Kindergarteners have to wait outside in the cold before school. The school was remodeled and supposedly solved the traffic problems with their new drop off zone but has only made it worse. The school doesn't have an actual parking, instead you are to park across the street at a church. Not to mention, the secretary in the office is very rude and not helpful.
