We are so grateful to have found Nex+Gen. My son has thrived during his two and a half years at the school. The teachers are top-notch and best of all, they truly care. Project-Based Learning demands a lot of both teachers and students. They can't just crack open a textbook and go on autopilot like a regular school. Teachers design curriculum that creatively engages students by working on projects that tie in to real-world problems. For instance, my son's physics teacher and math teacher recently teamed up to devise a new project. They challenged students to use physics and trigonometry to figure out how to launch a Hot Wheels car off a ramp through a ring of fire and into a miniature "swimming pool." They only got two tries to figure out the placement of the ring and the swimming pool, so their calculations had to be spot-on. A project like this is so much more memorable and engaging compared to how most of us had to learn these same concepts back in the day. This is how you inspire teens to become engineers and rocket scientists.
Another cool thing is that they don't "teach to the test," yet the side effect has been that their students test far better than the state average year after year. On top of that, Nex+Gen is the only New Tech Network school in all of New Mexico (https://newtechnetwork.org/ ). We are so fortunate that APS has given us access to this amazing opportunity for free!

The information listed here is very old. Nex+Gen Academy serves grades 9 through 12 and they currently enroll much more than what's stated here. The teachers are awesome- very caring, and there's a high concentration of National Board Certified instructors. Also, the school culture is very positive and safe. The environment is open and modern. A large "geeky" population (including my son, who feels at home here)

This is a PBL school, meaning we study through Project Based Learning. It's a fun if stressful experience. But even with all the stress, I've found that I've learned more at this school, then I ever realized. It sometimes feels like the work we do is pointless and unneeded. But when I take tests or have conversations with my friends from other schools, I realize that I know learned more then them even as we were studying the same topics in school. The teachers are all amazing people who treat there students as equals and friends, and fellow students in my grade level are amazing. Though, I noticed a separation between grade levels, I've also found that each grade level works amazingly well together because we learn each others talents and weaknesses, and how to best use them for our projects. We learn how to work as a group and how to deal with people who don't work as well as making sure every one who dose a fair share of work focusing on their talents. It is a truly unique and interesting school.
