My son loves going to ASK. He came from a classic, crowded, public school in TX. He had anxiety attacks almost daily and dreaded the loud hallways, fights, drug sniffing dogs, angry teachersand the sit and get type of instruction was teaching him next to nothing. At ASK, hes up & out of his chair 90% of the day, doing projects and interacting with classmates. The teachers there make him laugh everyday and have the most creative lessons & projects. My sons parent-teacher conference was run BY HIM, presenting his grades, his achievements, and fielding questions from us! The teachers strive to mold these young adults into successful, forward-thinking people. We also love the uniforms, it takes the drama & stress out of middle school and lets them just be kids. I only wish there was more sports, PE, and an art class- but all of that is coming. The new gym is under construction. Lunch is either packed, food trucks, or Dions on Thursdays. Soon Im sure they will expand to a cafeteria but my son prefers packing anyway so its not a problem. Overall we are so pleased!

Do not send your child to this school. After your first year you will see why the majority of parents remove their children from the school. We decided to give the school one more year and have found this year to be one headache after another. They do nothing about the bullies and put the blame on the victim and their parents. There has been countless times my child has come home completely stressed and full of tears. We will not be sending our child back to this school.

The Ask Academy - 3 Stars

The school is very, very well at educating scholars. The teachers are great and us having Friday's off makes it incredibly easy to reach out for support. However, it's hard for the school to feel diverse with everyone wearing the same outfit. It prepares students incredibly well for collage, but this is where the problems arise. Nothing is wrong with the way they teach us, it is a challenging school; the thing I have a problem with is the assignments and how they pile them up on us way too much. It's not unusual for you to have HOURS of homework each and every night, and although you could reach out to teachers, at the end of the day it's up to you to reach that deadline. You can imagine how students after years of project stress will begin to develop negative mental problems, especially demotivation. I've never been to another school, but I do know that ASK is far beyond what scholars should have to put up with, the amount of homework is almost unbareable. Just about everyone I have ever asked is dealing with some sort of emotional dismay because of how much stress and anxiety of projects has built up time and time again. Overall, ASK is great at doing it's purpose to be a STEM school, but it comes with the sharp price of mental instability.

So today I went in to the school to drop off an order to my aunt that works there. The old lady that works up front. I did not get her name she is very rude and not professional at all I don't know how they could have someone working there like that. She was trying to find a way to start an argument with me and being very rude. She needs to learn how to be professional if she's going to be working at the school.

Do not send your child to this school the bullying is horrible and the administration does not care about the children that are bullied and continue to let it happen without any punishment to the bullies. They also don't monitor the kids at lunch which leads
to children being beat up and them trying to cover it up and saying not to involve police. Also students putting the fights all over social media of kids getting beat up. There's lots of racism going on students calling other students derogatory names with no punishment. We thought this was going to be a wonderful school to send our children too it ended up being a nightmare. STAY AWAY!!!!!!

The teachers are nice but everything else sucks the school actively encourages kids to keep parents out of their school life and work also all the kids on the campus are just jerks the work is fine but never really well explained and it just sucks in general it is shocking how it is still in business because it is so awful.

The Ask academy is a quite disruptive learning environment. It has been ineffective, and harmful to my mental health and emotional state. I cry myself to sleep every night because of the things I struggle to face on campus. The schools thought of safety is absolutely and utterly skewed. This is because they do not believe that yeezy foam runners are safe for school. I have been targeted and yelled at AND cursed by project managers. This experience has caused trauma and a ripple affect throughout my teen life childhood. I would not recommend this school to those who are sensitive or easy influenced.

When I went to this school not only was I called certain slurs both racial and homophobic I have noticed a saddening lack of adult teachers that cannot seem to keep themselves from delving into topics such as politics and religion quite literally last time i was here not only was there a saddening amount of seemingly unreported sexual harassment of female students the school also did not ever listen and shut down a page that actively was hosting student complaints and showing them on the internet showing not only that this school was ignoring so many cases of sexual harassment and the like but also told a pregnant student to leave or else they also forced my history teacher to choose between either her own family or work this is a horrible school that also has a toxic culture not only does the idea of superiority seep in to the kids heads and give them a massive ego it also promotes a culture of bullying out queer or LGBT kids with racial slurs being used frequency this school was a horrid experience and i am glad i am out

Unfortunately my son has experienced more racist attitudes among his peers than I ever imagined he would. I have notified the school about it several times and rhey have dealt with nicely. Unfortunately I think the focus is too much on academics with little time devoted to kids socially being appropriate and kind. It's been a problem all year. I will likely pull my child.

The academics are good and if the child likes a strong stem program, this is a great school. There seems to be a lot of bullying and it's sad. There are not ant great after-school clubs or athletics. Gym class is a joke, my son has gym in a classroom and all they seem to do is stretch. It just depends on what school experience you are looking for.

I am particularly impressed with their proactive approach to develop relationships. That prevents most bullyinng. On the rare occasions my children have seen it, it has been dealt with immediately and effectively.

My children have experienced incredible support and encouragement, appropriate intellectual challenge, hands on learning, guidance from all their teachers. . Even the gifted FC/CP (homeroom) teachers have been excellent in working with us to be sure all IEP enrichments were appropriate and implemented. LOVE this school and all the teachers there. I've referred several friends to ASK to have their children entered into the lottery so their children can experience 6-12 in this INCREDIBLE environment. Again, FANTASTIC GIFTED PROGRAMS.

The school is ok. The gifted program makes this school awful. If my students were not gifted students I would put them in ASK. But the middle school gifted teacher makes it not worth it. High school gifted program is pretty decent.

Gifted program at this school is god awful. The middle school teacher works on paperwork all day and is angered when confronted. This is the worse part of The Ask Academy.

The gifted program for middle school is awful. The teacher just sits in the classroom doing paperwork and there is really no enrichment for students in the gifted program. They are just working on work from other classes 90% of the time. Besides that most of the school is really good.

I find it interesting that even back in 2014 there were complaints on how they deal with students with ADHD, and nothing had changed. The bullying is now coming from the administration who had decided to hang a target on my child's back. Instead of helping him, they are building a case against him to remove him from the School. They did nothing to help prior to his diagnosis and things just got worse after his diagnosis. This school does not deserve the federal funding it is receiving.

There's a big range in teacher effectiveness. It is obvious which adults are actually teachers and which are tradespeople/field experts who have taken teaching jobs. Some of them clearly do not like kids.

The homework is ok, but some of the reading assignments are not such that should be read without a seminar discussion. They are too difficult for high schoolers to digest and comprehend on their own.

Issues of character are not addressed at all. Only a select few students are included in the big, fun projects; the rest are filler as long as their standardized test scores are good.

The adults at ASK seem to be more interested in their reputation with the PED and in hosting the governor and Skandera than the academic success of their students. All they want from students is good standardized test scores and if they need any extra support or have IEP goals, they are just a bother. ASK is very cliquey and only a small number of kids are included in the big, fun learning activities. Students eat outside in the dirt; expensive uniform slacks are newly required from a specific vendor instead of just enforcing the existing dress code; the humanities are sorely neglected and undervalued; there is no music or art; PE is a joke; staff turnover is unusually high...

As a senior now at the ASK Academy I am very proud to say that this is without a doubt one of the best high schools in the state. I chose the engineering pathway and have loved it! Just recently in my aerospace class we have designed fully functional wind tunnels that the school is funding. This project has required use in CAD Design, multiple levels of math, time scheduling, and budgeting, all of these are skills that have been learned through throughout our high school career. In my years at the school I have also helped 3D Print out prototypes for personal projects, school projects, and research projects for Sandia National Labs! Another great thing about the 3D Printing department of the school is that it is all student led, the engineering project manager oversees the overall operation however all prints go through the scholars in that department. Through this school I am also on my way to patenting my very own design that I have spent three of my four years designing. The ASK Academy has also won two state championships in the VEX Robotics and have gone onto national and world competitions. I have also learned how to use peer reviews articles to write literature reviews and research papers similar to that in college. Keep in mind, I have barely scraped the surface of the engineering pathway, there is still the entire bio-medical pathway that has its great teachers and projects. Overall if you are looking into this school and want to decide off of these reviews, go off of the scholar reviews, we are the ones who have been to the school and experience it everyday throughout the school year.

As a recent graduate from the ASK Academy (2014), I know it to be an extremely flexible learning atmosphere, which will work for and with you as long as you (as a student) put in the effort. I attended Rio Rancho High School for a short period of time, and, while they have some excellent teachers, the administration is not student-focused. I am now a cadet at the US Air Force Academy. ASK not only provided the opportunity for my admission, but furnished me with most of the tools that I need to succeed here.

This school loves to bend the rules. Treats great staff with expectations of coveting administration lack of planning. Let's unlicensed educators be hired or work in areas not qualified. As an educator here I feel unsupported especially when our principal left in December without any replacement. Our reviews have been done by people interviewing for next year.

Unhappy with this school. A few good teachers, but the majority inexperienced, immature, weird. This goes for administrators as well. Don't abide by the laws/rules for accommodating students. Act like a private school on public funds. Students bully & cyber bully each other.

As A student at ASK right now, i have say this is one of the best schools i have gone to. Ask works for you if you put in the time. You must work, hard. As a student with both ADHD and aspergers, to pass chemistry, i had to put in 40+ hours a week. I worked, and because of my work, i learned. My IEP was to allow things to be emailed late and to allow extra time, which was what i need. That is the mission of ASK, self directed learning, unless i looked out for my best interest and used my IEP for what is meant for, allowing good, quality work in a reasonable time, ASK would be a very different place. Responding to the parents in the other reviews, Your student must fight for them selves, Special Education Director will help set up a excellent IEP, but the students must speak with each of the teachers about how said IEP will interact with the class. ASK is the only school where the IEP's where positive, all other schools felt like a court case with "evidence". ASK is a job like any other, it should take a good amount of time and energy, but it will prepare you for what ever happens after high school

I am currently a student at ASK and am near the end of my sophomore year. Coming from a home school background, I find ASK to be a great place of opportunity in the academic field. We specialize in two field: Bio-medical and Engineering. Here, students are allowed to chose one of the two mentioned career pathways. Personally, being on the engineering side of the spectrum, I have found ASK to be challenging, but in a good way. One of the main things emphasized, is being professional and working in a business-like environment. Now this may sound boring, but it is quite opposite. With many project based learning experiences, we learn to collaborate, lead, and take initiative in our projects. If our reputation of being exceedingly geeky precedes us, I'd have to say that it is true generally. I'd also like to point out that ASK is not just for the geeky or really smart. It is for the average person that is willing to learn and willing to work. One of the nice parts here at ASK is the opportunity for attention and tutoring from teachers that want to teach and that are not just racking in a paycheck. Never in my life have I been treated so rudely by teachers. I am a mother of 3 who has raised 2 kids through highschool (both RRHS). My son who is ADD required a a more focused approached which we thought ask could provide. We were wrong. They are understaffed and underfunded. At first it seems stellar with their uniforms and cheap laptops but once you enroll it goes down hill. RRHS isn't perfect but it's bounds better than this horrible learning environment.
