I cannot recommend RioGAFA to prospective educators based on my personal experience.

The students deserve dedicated teachers, but the work environment made it difficult for educators to succeed. During my time there, teacher morale was extremely low, and nearly all of the educators I worked with left. The high turnover alone should cause prospective teachers to ask questions.

Many administrative decisions seemed to prioritize compliance over giving teachers the time and resources needed to be successful. For example, teachers were required to supervise students in the cafeteria, even when other staff members were assigned there, while we shared one small printer to prepare lessons. Instead of using that time to make copies and prepare for instruction, we often had to complete those tasks after contract hours.

Teachers were also expected to teach art classes outside of their certification or training, adding another layer of stress and responsibility. Professional development days rarely provided meaningful preparation time, leaving many teachers to set up classrooms, plan lessons, and complete required work on their own time.

I also witnessed an educational assistant performing long-term substitute teaching duties without being compensated accordingly. In addition, I saw students verbally abuse staff members without what I believed were meaningful consequences, contributing to an environment where many teachers felt unsupported.

The students deserved stability, but the constant turnover made that difficult. If you are considering a position here, ask about teacher retention, planning time, workload expectations, student discipline, and administrative support. The answers to those questions will tell you a great deal about the school’s culture.

This review reflects my personal experience and is intended to help prospective educators make an informed decision.

This school is supposed to be fine arts and they only teach it for the last hour of the day. The art teachers are not qualified art teachers and they hire people off the streets who teach painting, drawing, air clay, dance, and music at the level of an arts and crafts or recreational program. Definitely not at the level to be considered a “fine arts” program. There is almost no support for children with special needs or who are struggling academically. The teachers do not receive support from administrators, and they often present themselves as too busy to address the needs of students, teachers and families. The academic curriculum is not rigorous or aligned vertically and horizontally. I have seen 4th and 5th grade teachers reading to their students instead of making them read as the students sit there board out of their minds and unengaged. Staff, students and many times families are treated very poorly by administrators and they do not have the resources to run a fine arts program and especially a school.

In my experience this year, expectations increased significantly after new coaching and leadership changes, and the workload became difficult to sustain.

When teachers raised concerns about the scope of those expectations, communication did not always feel supportive or collaborative. At times, expectations were introduced without clear models or examples, and evaluation criteria did not always feel clearly defined or aligned. Leadership support and clarity around expectations could be improved. This contributed to low morale, and several colleagues have chosen not to return.

Students were great, and I grew as an educator. Prospective teachers may want to ask about workload expectations, planning requirements, and how teacher feedback is incorporated.

As a teacher at Rio Grande Academy of Fine Arts, I can say this school truly stands out in so many ways. We take pride in integrating art across subjects, giving students a unique, creative, and rigorous learning experience that challenges them in meaningful ways.

Student safety and a positive environment are top priorities here. Bullying or fighting isn’t tolerated, and we keep a close eye to make sure every student feels safe and respected. Students are always supervised, so parents can rest assured knowing their children are well cared for.

What’s also wonderful about Rio Grande Academy is that it’s a free charter school, so families don’t have to worry about purchasing school supplies. We don’t require uniforms, allowing students to express themselves more freely, and the teaching staff here genuinely cares about each student’s growth. If you’re looking for a school that values creativity, structure, and safety, I highly recommend Rio Grande Academy of Fine Arts!
