I go to this school, and I have SO many issues with this school.
Had a friend attending the school with me, they suffered through relentless bullying throughout their time there. They were practically ran out of the school, the admins did close to nothing to help them or punish the bullies.
Aside from that, the school is held together by crushed dreams and prayers. The admins barely communicate with anyone about events happening and they rarely have the budget to repair anything that breaks.
The only good part about this school is some of the teachers, some of my all time favorite teachers are from here but they unfortunately dont make up for the sheer incompetence of the admins.

This school is terrible for any student that has not been in the Coral System for years. the students are clicky and closed minded and bullying is not addressed in a punitive way. The victim's are punished and the harasser's tend to get away with it.
Also, the school has very limited resources, which makes SEL programs at the school nil. The students at this school have been at Coral for years and know how the system works and how to get away with stuff. Also, when my child attended Coral there was rampant cheating and this was common amongst the students that were part of the Coral system for many years. They seemed to get away with it too. The campus setting is very restrictive and dress code infractions were taken more seriously by the dean of discipline than bullying cases. My child was afraid to go to school and did not feel safe. Also, the administration did not effectively communicate with parents when code red incidences happened on campus.
The one silver lining to this school was the teachers, they seemed to care about the students.

Terrible! They dont deal with bullying in a equal way. Lots of victims got into as much trouble as the predators or more. Teachers were extremely unsupportive. They had there favorites who were treated with more respect and made the rest of the students feel not important. 10/10 wouldnt recommend. They care more about education than the students well being and mental health. I didnt feel comfortable or safe here.

Coral is a solid solution if you're zoned for a "bad" school. However, there are a LOT of issue that keep it from being what I would consider a great school. The administration and teacher's view and treatment of parents and of students... the absolutely abysmal pickup/drop off protocol... the homework policy that is, quite frankly, archaic... the way detentions are given for the most ridiculous of things (whatever happened to in-school suspension for failure to turn in homework?? why are we punishing the parents for what the student has failed to do?)... the teachers don't allow children to wear hoodies up BEFORE or AFTER school... even in the coldest of weather. It's cruel. There's a lot of work to be done here before this school is ever considered great, in my opinion.

Too much focus on busy-work. I agree with another parent who said your child could be smart and fail because of homework. My children have received multiple detentions for not turning in homework that was assigned over a weekend that amounted to little more than busy-work. It's not effective and actually is discouraging to the student.

The administration doesn't seem very interested in finding solutions that make parents and students happy, they seem to favor the teachers more than anything else.

We sent our kids here to avoid bullying but have found that this school doesn't handle it any better than any other school. We've experienced a range from turning a blind eye to punishing the victim as much as or more than the perpetrator.

This school is a great alternative if the school you're zoned for isn't very good. However, there's definitely headaches. Dealing with teachers is one. The nightmare pickup/drop off situation is another.
Posted: November 19, 2019
Some teachers are far too focused on busy work without looking for alternative methods to apply students' knowledge. A smart child could fail a class simply because of an inability to turn in homework. That seems wrong to me.

My child only went one year and he had to repeat that year because of the lack of education he received at Coral. He also struggles with opening up because of the way teachers treat the kids. This place needs to be shut down and the teachers stripped of their license. They have flown under the radar far too long.

Teachers pick on students who are not their favorites. My child literally got detention for throwing a piece of trash away.
Posted: October 17, 2019
They treat children as criminals by enforcing ridiculous rules, like not having your coat on when you come in the building regardless of the fact its showing and only 10 degrees outside

The teachers themselves are Bullys! They don't care.

It has been awful and other parents agree and I wish they would get on here and write reviews. If it wasn't for the other parents of kids we have gotten to know, of other good families who continue to tolerate this horrible place, we would be gone yesterday--just looking for a variance.

They either overload you with nonsense after not thoroughly teaching, or give you none.

The honors math program for middle school is a disaster. They say they are an academy of math and science-they are dismissive and negligent to the standards that even a public school can uphold.
Posted: February 14, 2019
They are unnecessarily militant about a useless dress code and yet overlook signs and reports of bullying. Our daughter has been an honor role student her whole life, never wanted to miss a day, even through a surgery in ES, and now fights to get the courage to be there on the daily.
Posted: February 14, 2019
We have tried for two years to be in communication with the administration about the bullying of our daughter and the poor academic program and we are dismissed and told "we're working on it"--for two years!

Children with learning disabilities are pushed to the side and ostracized.

Some of the teachers are bully's and the administration doesn't want to hear about it.

Initially our children loved this school and all their teachers. After being there for 4 years they strongly dislike most of the staff. Some teachers pick favorites and will bully the other students they do not like. The middle school hands out so many detentions the principal informed me that she is behind on logging them, as she shows me a stack about 3-4 inches high of detentions she has yet to process. Many of the teachers lack the patience to work with children and are quick to hand out detentions for small things. Some of the teachers will harass students until they do something that gets them in trouble. They laugh about it and treat it like it is a game. One of my child's friends got an in house suspension for rolling in the snow after school. The high school is no better. They actually give less freedoms to the kids. They try hard to push kids that they don't want there out by harassing and punishing them for small and irrelevant things. There lack of concern for disabled children is highly worrisome and should be noted for anyone whom has a child on the Autism spectrum or any disability that can affect a child's learning. They were a good school before they started expanding, now a lot of good teachers are gone because they were tired of dealing with the school and their way of handling children. If you like to know about up coming events with prior notice this school will disappoint you. They regularly send emails and phones the day before some event is about to take place. They make it difficult for your schedule if you and your children do any activities outside of school.

There are a few good teachers and administrators at this school.

To instill these values you must lead by example and I cannot say the staff is dedicated enough to these values to show these children how to be good respectful members of society.

Years ago, this was a great choice for a high school in Reno. That said, the last 4-5 years have been atrocious. Expanding the school is a good idea, but only if you have the funds to pay qualified teachers. The expansion caused the need for more teachers, but the money was not there to pay for experienced or qualified instructors. Now, it takes my younger brother over a month to get back the grade on a 3-page essay. This school has far too many issues to list here, and I think that most of those problems revolve around money because of the recent expansion. I am a full-time student in the NevadaTeach program at UNR, and this school's slow collapse is not a secret. Coral Academy employs teachers who are fresh out of college, without experience, and most of the teachers are trying to get some experience before going to a public school.

The chemistry teacher doesn't have enough knowledge in chemistry at high school level. This is the first year she teaches chemistry as she used to teach biology, so no wonder she makes mistakes in chemistry. She doesn't even try to improve the quality of her teaching style. Her grading method is not standard either. So far a lot of parents have complained but it seems the Coral high school director is not empowered (effective person) to make positive changes about this issue.

I am a parent of an 8th grader and a 4th grade student. The school used to be one of the best in Reno. It is not what is was few years ago when my kids started.
The veteran teachers work very hard to get the students to understand the most challenging material.
The problems started two years ago when the Coral Academy expanded 40% . The school started hiring a lot of new teachers. Some without any degree in the subject they are teaching. Some of the new teachers are very good and are doing their best to teach the challenging program. But some are very incompetent and do not make any effort to do a better job.
If parents talk to the administration about their concerns those same teachers prefer to target their kids instead of doing something constructive and start actually doing their job properly. The administration is trying to do something but it is not very successful.
We talked to the administration about concerns that we have and since then my kids English teacher is targeting my child in a very unprofessional way. It doesn't matter how much my child works or what is the quality of the job done she only gives my kid bad grades.
The problems have become a lot more than any of the good things in the last two years and my kids will not be returning to the school next year.
The elementary school is still a good alternative to most elementary schools in the public school system.

The teachers and admin are wonderful and helpful. He has been challenged in his work and encouraged to do his best. I love the cultural diversity of the student population as I believe it fosters the most necessary skill of tolerance. The school environment encourages kids to get along and to help each other. Not only is my child getting an excellent academic education he is learning to work and share with others, a vital element of success in the workplace.

I've been going to Coral Academy of Science (CAS) since the 3rd grade, when they first started an Elementary, now I'm in 9th grade. My school is the best because when you need help the teachers are there to assist you and when your down everyone is there to cheer you up. No bullying occurs to no one under any circumstances is there any bullying allowed at this school. We also have uniforms so we don't get judge on what we wear. And because some of us don't have enough money to buy what the other person is wearing.Though there are Free Dress Days here at Coral Academy there is a fee of $2 in order to help a specific group, clubs, or even the Seniors for their graduation or prom. This is our school motto: "Coral Academy of Science provides a safe learning environment, supports a diverse community, and a student body that is dedicated to a rigorous college preparatory curriculum."

Coral Academy Secondary and Elementary are wonderful schools for my children. The instructors are dedicated, hardworking and creative in their approach while being stern but fair. The expectations are high, but my children do a much better job and try harder when more is expected of them. I am very happy with both campuses and appreciate the parent involvement and investment the instructors make in making Coral a very good alternative to our also good, but not as challenging, zoned school.
