SPECIAL NEEDS BEWARE

Parents of special needs children must beware of sending prized children to Charles Huber Elementary School. There are numerous attitude, personnel, and systemic issues in this school which are hazardous to your children's health and well-being.

Building Administration
The building administration meagerly monitors the special education staff, including intervention specialists and aides. The principal has limited control, knowledge, and/or influence upon the quality control of special education service delivery. There are no powerful, true "boots-on-the-ground" advocates for your children in this building.

Special Education Administration
The district special education administration has limited knowledge of what is transpiring in high-needs classrooms. They defend educators without considering legal compliance. There is lack of surprise visits to observe the root cause of problems .When the administration is more concerned about protecting teachers instead of disabled children, you know there are huge problems in the building.

Lack of Systems
The school administrators do not have significant systems in place to ensure the full safety and well-being of students with disabilities. There is a lack of qualified substitute teachers with special education knowledge. At times, educational aides are left without a substitute teacher, which is either unethical and/or illegal. Students risk being traumatized when both the special education teacher and aide call off at the same day .This may frequently occur when a friendship bonds are fostered, wrongdoing will never be discovered, because the team will repeatedly lie to defend themselves.

Accessible Design
The special education classrooms do not follow federal ADA accessible design criteria, including access to attached bathrooms.

Limited Training
Beyond possessing a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree, the intervention specialists do not possess significant, industry- recognized, transferrable special education credentials. The educational aides have no significant, external training beyond what the school district provides. The best teachers and aides should be placed in the early grades instead of at the upper grades.

No sensory Rooms
The school district and the special education department do not provide sensory facilities or materials for students with disabilities .Whatever limited supplies are present are teacher purchased.

We were assured that they could handle a child with autism. We noticed that our son was inexplicably absent from all the photos posted on class dojo of his class. We soon found out that the reason was because he spent most of his days being punished (sitting in the hall alone, or in principal's office) simply because he couldn't behave like the "normal" kids. We were disgusted and transferred him to a different school immediately.

Bitter sweet. Our daughter in second grade has been doing great. We pulled out our son in 3rd grade with autism because the school was clearly not equipped with handle him. If you have a special needs child, stay away!

The teaching staff is grossly imbalanced, with regard to diversity, though the community it serves IS diverse. I doubt the administrators recruit in a proactive manner to change this for the better. They fail to recognize this would not only enhance their teaching experience, but it would bring higher quality to the children's total learning experience, and an obvious plus to the community! The apparent lack of cultural sensitivity is reflected in disparate practices to the detriment and shame of the administration. Not being able or willing to venture past their priviledge is a blight to the curriculum and to their reputation as a protected environment for ALL CHILDREN in which to learn and grow.

This school is now closed, thankfully. However, because of fewer elementary schools the classroom size is growing in the others! The principle from this school is now retired thankfully because he and many of the teachers from this school treated kids as just a number, very sad.

Our daughter was the new kid in school 2 years ago and the teachers and kids made her fill great and accepted her with open arms. i highly recomend this school. It is now called charles h huber but has the same teachers and principle that makes it so great.
