Southeast Middle School

I would like to share my perspective on Southeast, where my child has been for three years now. He transferred here at the end of 6th grade after leaving a Magnet Program that didn't work out, and I was initially skeptical. However, the transition was smooth due to his familiarity with some students from elementary school.

Mr. Myers and Dr. Williams handled any minor issues with great care, ensuring we were informed and that situations were addressed appropriately.

I feel that Mr. Myers is fair and always present. With the school having mostly male students, I believe the staff is appropriate. Ms. Turnipseed in the front office is always warm and welcoming, and the security is attentive. The exterior of the school is well-kept, which adds to the overall atmosphere. Ms. Reese is a very caring teacher who genuinely cares about her students.

I think the staff is fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishments. My child has been thriving since he transferred, and any lack of grades can be attributed to him—he has the resources available if needed.

While I wish there were more extracurricular activities like fundraisers and field trips, car washes etc.. things to get the community more involved. I understand resources may be limited in a rural area. Overall, the school offers valuable in-school clubs and a positive environment.

my son has ADD and getting these teachers to help keep him on track or let me know when his meds seem to not be working is not going to happen at this school

not at all when controlling class all day when is there time to teach I mean really

when they can keep teachers here, they pick and choose what the want to do..... haven't found not one I would say cares about the child learning

I agree everything is a app and nothing ever works but kids pay that price just not fair

this school is a joke the new principle is awesome.... but the teachers and staff is a joke no parent teacher contact until its at there conventions that got to many wild children down there to teach a class my child will be moved asap

Being a military family, we are accustomed to different environments and adjust accordingly, however, I must say I wish I would have done better research on this school prior to moving to the area and enrolling my child. The school doesn't have the support of administration, my child is involved in various activities and seldom do you ever see the principle, Mrs. Whittaker attend any of them. What principle doesn't attend the awards ceremonies, holiday concerts and fairs? This is brand new to me and the PTO is a ln absolute joke. The teachers don't attend because they aren't required to do so, this is an absolute first in my child's academic setting where this is not enforced..how can parents be expected to be involved in PTO when only five teachers are involved.

I will say there are some good teachers that truly care but it's hard when the children are allowed to act out with little consequence. The awards ceremony was truly sad in seeing that the adults have very little control over the children and do not enforce the rules placed forth. I saw so many infractions and the teachers (those that were there) turned their heads away from it. I have never get so negative towards a school and I caution any parent to reconsider sending your child to this school if there are at all any other options.

This school needs to be audited by the district and be placed on a plan of correction. They are failing these students from my observation.

My son attends this school and I am very happy with how he as a student and his grades turn out. A honor roll student all AAP classes.

It is true, new administration lack of leadership and sincere efforts place a huge obstacle for parent involvement. On the other hand, general education for non disable kids seems to be fair while special education is mediocre. Children with disabilities are been dismissed 20 to 30 minutes prior the dismissal of non disable children. Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) meetings are a waste of time since they are micro managed by administration (including the Special Education Director of Richland One) who make prior meetings in order control the possible expressions offered at the meeting and the potential outcome (always in favor of the district). Also, dynamic programs like Safe Routes to School were rejected by the by the principal in 2010 because "she believes her school is NOT a good candidate for this federal program", even though is open for any school in the nation regardless of location. I rate this school 2.

New Administration is not approachable and does not make a sincere effort to gain parental involvement from ALL parents. School lacks a welcoming enviornment. Inspite of this my student has done well but I think if these elements would change the school would be better.
