We can’t speak highly enough about this school. Our daughter has been there since the spring and has been absolutely thriving. You can really tell how much the teachers and staff care about each individual child. I really love how involved the keep us parents and always give updates throughout the day.

We love this school! Harmony is a unique community that fosters kid's creativity by allowing them to explore the world around them in a safe and educational way. There is so much outdoor time, hands-on and experiential learning, that is is truly one of a kind. The teachers take the time to get to know each student and the administrative staff is dedicated to improving and growing the school even more. This is a wonderful place for children to grow and learn!

The teachers are fantastic, the activities are engaging, the curriculum is well rounded and accommodating, the kids get lots of time outside, and the community is lovely. We love Harmony for our son and soon for our daughter too.

The people who made this a wonderful school have all left. The school is no longer a safe environment for children. They do not support children with special needs, or learning abilities. They do not provide educational instruction at grade level. They no longer teach about the environment, kindness, healthy leaving, Montessori, Waldorf or Inquiry Based learning.

This school is inclusive and fosters its students’ growth as people, not just as students. My child wants to be there even on the weekends. It’s been a life saver for my family and myself.

I have not seen bullying at this school. I do know that students often have to go to time out for behavior interventions and that bullying is not tolerated whatsoever. Of course during outdoor time, bullying would be a little harder to spot because students are encouraged to play independently with others and might be out of ear shot from the teachers. I do believe that if my daughter felt that she was being unfairly treated by another student, that she would feel comfortable enough to tell her teachers. The teachers go above and beyond to address any situations or actions that could lead to a situation. I'm very impressed.

This is a wonderful school, and frankly, the only school like it in Columbia, SC. I am thrilled to learn what my daughter is doing each day. This is a very positive environment where they actually let kids be kids. They are learning how to be kind citizens to one another, and the learning is FANTASTIC!! I cannot imagine a better place to send my children.

Posted: December 3, 2018

My daughter is a preschool student and does not receive homework yet.

Posted: December 3, 2018

They care so much about each individual child. The teachers know and love my daughter and are always willing to give me an update without me asking, which I greatly appreciate as a parent. I feel very safe leaving my daughter in the care of her teachers.

Absolutely agree with Harmony's effective ability to promote character and respect! Harmony's staff as done an amazing job at cultivating a nurturing family environment where ALL students are loved and valued. My daughter has gained so much confidence in herself since starting preschool here. She is learning how to appropriately interact with students her own age. This also is helping for sharing, and learning how to use their words when they are frustrated. She is also learning how to forgive others.

Posted: December 3, 2018

The staff work really hard to communicate important information to parents. We at least get one weekly email and a monthly overview of events to come. All scheduled field trip days, school improvement days, teacher/parent conferences, etc are all outlined before the school year even begins. They are very organized and I commend them for doing such a great job, as running a school is a lot of work.

Posted: December 3, 2018

I think the whole mantra of Harmony School is to love everyone and treat one another with kindness. The foundation for becoming a compassionate adult is being modeled at this school. I have no idea to the degree of learning differences/special needs that this school has for HIPPA reasons, but our creative teachers find ways to engage and connect with the students they have.

My school experience with my daughter has been absolutely remarkable. Harmony is so successful in making your children feel warm, loved and secure. They embrace every child for their uniqueness. My daughter attended when she was just 2.5 years old, and since then has thrived and blossomed into a kind citizen of the world. I am so grateful for this school- the teachers, the staff and the nurturing environment they provide.

Homework wasn’t checked on a regular basis. Reading was the only typical homework.

Posted: August 4, 2018

As long as you go with the flow you are treated as one. Any disagreement with teachers or staff daily life at school will change for the child.

Posted: August 4, 2018

Posted: August 4, 2018

Disagreements aren’t handle in one setting. Disagreeing with staff or board members will be very uncomfortable for family and children.

Posted: August 4, 2018

My family was dismissed after finding out our child was allowed to cross the street and go to a store without any supervision. Our worries and concerns were mocked. I could never support a place that treated my family the way we were. Good luck if you send your children here you will need it.

Posted: April 13, 2018

We loved our teacher as she did an amazing job incorporating different lessons. We just had concerns when she wasn't there or during aftercare.

Posted: April 13, 2018

They taught my daughter about her body belonging to herself we loved that.

Posted: April 13, 2018

Posted: April 13, 2018

When you would go in to volunteer you could see the staff struggle with students who were highly distractable. They just didn't have the skills and their frustration would show!

Posted: April 13, 2018

This is why I had to add my voice! My child never really had any issues with friends - or relational bullying - but physically yes. She always had the "she's not my friend anymore" tiffs. However, that was not a big issue. Several times she came home from school with injuries caused by another student - a bigger boy. The school never let me know about it nor seemed to address it! I get kids get into tough situations with peers, but I hated that she would have a bruise on her head, no one knew what had happened, and she would complain about some big boy holding her down causing her to get hurt. Still boils my blood!

Posted: April 13, 2018

Ok. I wish they would include parents more in concerns and supervise the kids a little more when outside. There is no reason for my child to be physically harmed by another kid!

Posted: April 13, 2018

I loved how my child was done at the end of the day!

Posted: April 13, 2018

They cannot be effective as they are working against leadership and administration.

Posted: April 13, 2018

Some teachers attempt to, but with poor leadership and an environment that promotes gas lighting parents it is next to impossible.

Posted: April 13, 2018

They favor certain families and blame children for issues that staff let occur. They didn't even change the door code after a very upset parent withdrew their child! Talk about safety concerns!

Posted: April 13, 2018

Everyone needs to follow the exact philosophy of the school leader or they and their entire family are not welcome. Teachers are discouraged from differentiating and have "secret" curriculum they use with families that value their child learning academic skills.

Posted: April 13, 2018

We had a friend whose child was extensively bullied and the school did not support them. Further when picking up my grandchild we have seen relational bullying frequently.

Posted: April 13, 2018

Poor. I am glad my grandchild no longer attends this school, but need to let others know to avoid placing their child in this school. I hope they eventually address this versus sweeping it under the rug and sending parents of current students against previous parents. These families who have had negative experiences at Harmony School have been through enough and deserve support not judgement.

Posted: April 10, 2018

I have never seen a staff so willing to meet every child exactly where they are- both academically and emotionally. The teachers not only push my children to be the best students they can be, but they push them to be the best people they can be and they are shown love daily. The focus on experiential, hands-on learning cannot be beat if your child is a highly curious learner.

Posted: April 10, 2018

Harmony School instills kindness above all else. Students are taught to go out of their way to brighten someone's day, to advocate for themselves, to use their words, to properly apologize when they've done wrong, to forgive, and to show love to all they meet. Not only do they reinforce the values that I try to instill in my children on my own, but they help them blossom into their most confident and self-aware selves.

Posted: April 10, 2018

The administration team at Harmony is so kind, competent, and caring. They communicate clearly and effectively, they are always on top of everything, and they pour their hearts and souls into Harmony. Seeing the way the staff supports one another and models selfless friendship for the students is a true sight to behold.

Posted: April 10, 2018

Because of the way Harmony individualizes curriculum at all levels, and because of the expert staff they employ, I can confidently say that they go above and beyond to ensure that all children are not only understanding all course material, but gaining confidence in their areas of weakness.

Posted: April 10, 2018

I can say through personal experience that Harmony has absolutely no tolerance for any form of unkindness- physical or emotional. They teach their students to speak up when they feel they are being wronged, or when they see someone else being wronged and encourage students to advocate for themselves and for their friends. They spend a great deal of time teaching students of all ages conflict resolution techniques, anger management techniques, and articulation skills so that students can learn to work through problems on their own with confidence. When students need help resolving problems, teachers, aides, and administrators swiftly offer assistance and discipline as needed. They are truly committed to a peaceful learning environment for all students and they will work with you at all costs.

Posted: April 10, 2018

Aside from a few long-term projects for the elementary students, Harmony does not assign homework. I love that they understand that children need both rest and freedom after the school day ends.

Posted: April 10, 2018

I cannot say enough good things about Harmony School. The teachers, aides, administrators, and the community itself are some of the biggest blessings in my life. I feel so fortunate to be able to provide such a wonderful foundation for my children through Harmony School. It is such a comfort to know that every day when I drop off my kids, that they will be challenged, mentored, and fiercely loved. I can't imagine having better partners in raising my children into kind, respectful, responsible global citizens. I wish this school went through high school!

Posted: April 6, 2018

The director has been with the school for 30 years. She’s obviously doing something right.

Posted: April 6, 2018

Through the Montessori approach learning is individualized and student led. Each student gets one-on-one time with a teacher daily. The mixed age classrooms allow for students to learn exactly at their level - whether it’s a 5 year old who has challenges with reading or a 3 year old who is ready for multiplication.

Posted: April 6, 2018

Teachers are very reactive to instances in bullying. My children have been taught to advocate for themselves and to communicate with a teacher if they feel like they are being unfairly picked on. Students are taught to use their words and physical violence has zero tolerance.

Posted: April 6, 2018

My children are changed for the better. They are caring, respectful, and have a love of learning that I feel Harmony School has helped create. The foundation they have gained here will last them a lifetime. This is such a unique program here in Columbia and I am forever grateful we discovered it!

Posted: April 6, 2018

Students are not assigned homework except for the occasional project such as the yearly science project or “elders” project. I appreciate that this doesn’t add any unnecessary stress on the students or families.

Posted: April 6, 2018

Students are with the same teacher for multiple years so each teachers gets to know the student’s strengths and challenges.

Posted: April 6, 2018

I have never experienced a school that cultivates a culture of respect as much as Harmony. They believe in teaching and modeling respect for other humans, animals, and the environment. They are preparing our children to be true global citizens.

Posted: March 26, 2018

Our experience with this school has been stellar. Our daughter is in her second year of preschool and loves her school dearly. I look forward to enrolling my son next Spring so he may join his sister and take part in Harmony's individualized attention and care. I never have to worry about my child's safety, happiness, and well being. The Montessori and Waldorf based learning philosophy is amazing and effective on so many levels.

Posted: March 26, 2018

Contrary to what was written in a parent's previous review, I feel my child and the majority of others attending the school thrive in the environment the Teachers offer. The children are taught levels of kindness and respect.

Posted: March 26, 2018

Again, contrary to what has been said from previous review, bullying is not tolerated whatsoever. Sometimes children have no filter and that cannot always be controlled by teacher, parent and so on. If you are a helicopter parent then this laid back, loving and independent way of learning isn't for your child.

Posted: March 26, 2018

Posted: March 26, 2018

As someone that has grown up with dyslexia, I can tell you if Harmony had been an option for me as a child my learning disability would've been easier to adjust to. The school tries to accommodate the child's way of learning and depending on the child and Parent it can either be a good fit or not, but they certainly don't give up on a child.

Posted: March 26, 2018

They absolutely unequivocally address any signs of bullying or misbehavior.

Posted: March 5, 2018

The issues with this school are gradual. To the point where parents can deny that the school is in the wrong, possibly harming their child, or will lead to the harm of their child. The bullying is gradual and starts with friend/not my friend and increases. Some kids are just physically bullied -
or taught to fight by other children. I hoped it was just a few issues, but then I have been talking with multiple other families who have expressed concerns. The worst part is, when your child is injured they do not call you right away. Nor when they are running a high fever and lethargic.

The idea of the school is wonderful, but until their is a leadership change and some staffing changes this school is a danger to children and their families.

Posted: March 5, 2018

Some try their best, but are fighting up against incompetent teaching assistants, poor leadership, and some teachers are horrible (shaming elementary aged children for things not their fault or for talking to their parents regarding leaving campus unsupervised).

Posted: March 5, 2018

The students learn to bully from some of the teachers, positive characteristics are not built, and the bullying culture is strong (physical and relational).

Posted: March 5, 2018

The leadership is only effective at hiding issues versus taking responsibility and making changes. This leads to students suffering as the school director has a preference for a friend or staff member over a child's safety or well being.

Posted: March 5, 2018

If you do not fit the mold they are unable to assist. Extreme behaviors by some children are poorly handled due to lack of supervision and staff knowledge/skill. They also are unaware of or do not share with families supports available in their community.

Posted: March 5, 2018

It's one thing they sweep under the rug. Some teachers shame, others prefer daily time outs for all students, and students are physically and relational bullied. When faced with addressing it they worsen the issue by responding with dated and dangerous "techniques" while believing they know best.

Posted: July 9, 2015

These traits are strongly encouraged by example. Older children are aware that younger children look to them for what is allowed, acceptable and appropriate behavior. Lots of discussions, stories and real life examples of these characteristics are included in the curriculum as well as on the playground and on field trips.

Posted: July 9, 2015

Teachers and staff actually care about each and every child in the school. Very much a "community" of parents and staff with a common goal - the education, safety and recreation of our children. Time spent outdoors in the fresh air playing, exercising and pretending is priceless these days. Harmony provides it all along with gardening, recycling and community service opportunities. Rules exist but so does freedom and independence. A great combination.

Posted: July 9, 2015

Teachers allow the children to work at their own pace. They do not force learning - it happens naturally. They also model kindness and respect for others, teach problem resolution skills and introduce the concept of philanthropy in terms even the youngest students can understand.

Posted: April 29, 2015

My child went to this school for about a year starting at age two. It was not a fit for us. But most upsetting was feeling that my child was outcasted (and myself too) because my child did not respond well to such a relaxed, unstructured environment. After leaving this school and attending another one, my child has had virtually none of the behavioral issues that were exhibited and described to me everyday at Harmony. The school made me feel that my child was the problem and most certainly not their approach with my child. I believe this school may be a good fit for more laid back children. However, for students that require more structure and a teacher-led classroom, this is not the school. I wish the school would have been more open-minded to the idea that all children do not respond well in such a relaxed, unstructured environment, as opposed to blaming said child for not adapting.

We have been at Harmony for over a year. It has been the best experience since my daughter has been in daycare, which started when she was 6 months. Due to our horrible experience with daycare overseas, (Germany, Landstuhl), I have grown very critical of any day care institution. I have researched any and all schools in the Columbia area, prior to moving back to the US and I have found only one that I would entrust my daughter with, Harmony. This school has made an incredible difference in my daughter's and my life. My little girl has been given so much love and attention and care in addition to having learned a plethora of new and exciting things, which she happily tells me about every day I pick her up. Harmony has put my mind at ease, after being very skeptical of any new day care situation, and I am able to be at work, with my mind at work and know I do not have to worry for one second about my child's safety, happiness, well being (emotionally and cognitively). My daughter has come a long way, and so have I (being able to trust another institution), thanks to Harmony. Words cannot express how happy we are with this little school where learning and love go hand in hand.

We love Harmony! New to South Carolina (hubby is active duty Air Force), I am thankful I followed the recommendation of a professor at USC and checked out Harmony. One of the strengths of Harmony is the loving, dedicated, and highly trained staff. I confident, when dropping off my daughter, she will be safe and cared for with the highest of standards. Can't ask for more than that- a mama's peace of mind!

Posted: June 25, 2014

Harmony School is such a great learning and fun environment for all ages! I could never give my child the education and experience that he has received at Harmony any where else! He has attended this school since he was 2 1/2 years old and now that he is almost 5, he still sees each day as a GREAT experience! (We especially love the fact that he has such an overwhelming appreciation for the world and his actions toward it!)

Love this school! Our children have really enjoyed attending Harmony School. My husband and I are super happy with the Harmony teachers and staff. They have excellent teachers from PreK to Upper Elementary. Harmony is awesome and I highly recommend it!

My son has attended Harmony School for three years and has flourished tremendously. The quality of teachers in the classroom coupled with the Montessori, Inquiry and Waldorf based learning philosophy has made our experience second to none. All Harmony children receive individualized attention and the care that is given to their emotional development is outstanding. I would highly recommend this school to any parent.

I recently moved from a diverse area in NC to Columbia. After reviewing many preschools in the area, I was thankful to get a phone call from Harmony. My son loves the school and the teachers and the sense of community. It is a really wonderful school in a place that has little great places like this to choose from.

Unique blend of educational philosophies - montessori, waldorf and inquiry based learning for preschoolers thru 5th grade. Small, intimate setting with extremely caring teachers and staff. Non-profit status is a plus - low tuition is a priority.
