SST does not hold students accountable for their actions. They have this thing that they suppose to live by called Narwhal MAGIC which stands for moral compass, accountability, generosity, innovation, citizenship. Well let me tell you the same students who steals was able to use a magic ticket to get a reward and go to the school dance all in the same week that he stole items from another classmate. This is not the first time the student took something that wasnt his. He actually opened up my child belongings and took whatever he wanted. What kind of student characters are they building at this school? Do they really believe in MAGIC .
You get rewards for being a thief. Puzzling. No disciplinary action from the school staff and thats why its a secret. Hope everyone else children are safe.

As a 7 year attendee of SST Discovery and in the 8th grade, I can say that this school is not that good. Here's why:
Learning: I never feel excited about what I'm learning, and the teachers don't seem to be either. The teachers just give you notes to write down and then give you homework, and that's if it's a good class. Some classes (like 8th grade and last year's 7th grade Spanish) the teacher just gives you easy assignments and doesn't actually teach you Spanish. We are also doing the same assignments from last year in this year. We are not even learning new things in Spanish class.
Special Education: I can not provide feedback on this as I am not in Special Education but I do know some Special Education people and I can say that their experience is not that good.
Teaching: This one really is a 50/50.
On one hand, the teachers (they're mostly in the elementary levels though) can be really nice and really motivating and collaborate and help you to do your work, but on the other hand (mostly in the middle schools) they enforce a ton of work, or they don't enforce any work at all, and they teach badly by just giving you notes to copy down and expect you to do well on the tests. (The average for 8th grade B class on the Social Studies District Assessment was a 42 and only 5% pass rate, wow.)
Safety: The school doesn't really punish unless it's a big incident that happens to disrupt the already lackluster teaching and learning in the class.
Social-emotional support: I have never seen the school try to intervene with the student's health AT ALL. Maybe if the student is crying the teacher will ask if they're okay but that's it. One time in the 6th grade I had a concussion on the playground and all I got was an ICE PACK.
Family Engagement: The school does alright with this, some of the teachers are really nice and perform acts of kindness for your family. so I'll give them some credit on that.
Conclusion: in conclusion, SST Discovery is a school that I would NOT recommend for your child to go to. There are much better options for schools for your child to go to, and this school is not the one.

Have to call every single day, and not one of the responsible adults doing a thing about it

I might as well be homeschooling my kids. They never understand the homework and I have to teach it to them by Google-ing everything. I'm not a teacher!
Posted: November 8, 2019
Teaching here is the job everyone wants. Get paid for doing nothing. Emails and phone calls are never returned. Teachers are reactive, not proactive.
Posted: November 8, 2019
Their idea of developing character is disciplinary actions..... lots of them. For talking, walking, and chewing. PE coaches are also drill Sargents.
Posted: November 8, 2019
Discipline levels are all over the place. Same consequences for wearing the wrong shorts as cursing. Dean of students said they do not have to follow the handbook. Then why do we have to sign it?
Posted: November 8, 2019
There is no help, the students get it or dont and are then dismissed for grades.
Posted: November 8, 2019
Teachers kids are protected while others are disciplined. They are not supposed to make up more than 3% of the student population, but they dont follow the handbook here.
Posted: November 8, 2019
I really though a STEM based school would offer more to the students than the average curriculum in a positive manner. There is more, but it's on the parents, not taught by the teachers. You might as well homeschool your kids if your going to bring them here. Save on the gas and uniforms!

they are always doing activities to make sure kids know the importance of be nice with other people
Posted: December 15, 2016
I like that students are given a homework packet at the beginning of the week and can work at their own pace and turn it in on Fridays. Although its rather easy, that gives us a chance to supplement material at home.

my son wants to be the first since he started studying in this school
Posted: December 15, 2016
The teachers get to know the students' needs and are able to tailor the curriculum to support their specific talents and continue to spark their interests. Although the class sizes are larger than ideal, I am happy with how much guidance children have in the classroom. There is always a willingness by administration to listen and improve. That makes a big difference in my children's experience.

i love this school, the teachers are the best, they are always sending me e-mails letting me know how my child is doing and if he miss any assignment, they notify me by email that way my child can make up and keep getting good grades. i really recommend this school for those parents who want the best for their childrens

I had the opportunity to visit a computer lab and a robotics class. The students were engaged and as middle school students, they showed great collaboration and problem solving. The teacher taught by using an actual problem for the students to solve.

Hard-working, dedicated staff. The front office lady is super sweet and always has a smile on her face. It's comforting knowing that the students are more than just a number. Everyone knows everyone - it's a small town feel in this big city.

My duaghter has been going to this school for four years now and she's very happy here. Very personalized teaching. Great principal. It's a small school. A few years ago the school hired a Dean of Students and this was fantastic. They teach discipline, respect and no bullying. I appreciate everything they're doing for my daughter. I wish there were more schools like this.

Not sure who these people are who are posting but let me tell you about this school. The school is horrible I put my child there because of the cultural diversity and i had to hold him back one year because he was still not reading at his level the teachers are horrible especially the ones that i have encountered. They don't like doing after school tutoring and if your child has a disability good luck! they dont put out the effort to know the child instead the get frustrated with the kids as if its not their job to do good by the kids. The coaches pulls and pushes the kids! horrible just horrible the teaches yell and be rough with the kids its just a sad environment i would not recommend it if you want whats best for your child stay clear!!

My son goes to SST. we have been happy here. I was skeptical because of the location and the play area< but schools about education and that is what they are providing! i am happy to say we are staying another year and my daughter will also be attending this year.

Our daughter loves this school! It's her first year here and she is so very happy. The discipline policy is strict, which keeps bullies and troublemakers at bay, (a child was removed from her 3rd grade class within the first month due to his behavior; they're no nonsense!) She loves participating in all of the extra-curricular activities and is active in their reading club and show choir. Her teacher is highly qualified, and helps with tutoring whenever needed.
