I transferred into this school when I was just starting 9th grade I thought my year would be awesome since it was all royal looking and the uniforms were nice and I assumed the girls were educated but overtime I seen that they were ghetto looking for trouble they were entitled and they showed favoritism by appearance, the teachers were nosy unprofessional and they were sarcastic the computer science teacher showed favoritism towards the seniors and wasn't really all kind to me I tried to fit in but I failed miserably they have a high bully culture and the girls harassed me and stole my stuff to the point I had to transfer the school hasn't been renovated and I felt suicidal due to workload and no emotional support from the dean and I heard there was a sexual assault going on to and they don't cater to SPED students overall do not send you daughters to this school if you value their mental health! :D

My daughter did good until high school. One of her core subject teachers overloaded her classes with quizzes, tests, and assignments on Fridays when students didn't have much time. Students had to rush to complete packet work in other classes. Other teachers didn't take kindly to this and considered it off task instead of addressing the teacher. Holidays, and vacations were flooded with huge packets of work from a core teacher. The class day was paced with quality of work and not much teaching. My daughter would come home and learn it online from college videos. The hostile emotion in the class lead her to give up in that class. The negativity had an effect on other classes as we struggled to help her recover. My daughter was told she was lying about a diagnosis made by a doctor and an employee called her a liar because of something she thought she heard. She didn't verify and reduced my teenage daughter to tears. The same employee said my daughter was not smart enough to be at the school. Her mailed standardized results say at/above level. She got her first detention for uniform violation and was placed in an "old covid quarantine" room. There are covid notices of exposure that now have gone out. This school was great. I really did like the engineering teacher, the art teacher, "MrChoirMan", her middle school team was great, and her MS math teachers. Her MS math teach was firm, challenging and math was never communicated as a threat from her. While I am grateful to the majority of the teaching teams, the leadership, admin. And some teachers hinder progress, disingenuous, and do severe harm. Instead if looking back on great high school memories now have bigger problems to reconcile that were caused by employees that did not have our daughter's well being mind.

Positives: The microsized junior high is above average. The team of teachers communicate with you and are willing to learn/share what helps your child to improve. My daughter felt safe and became confident in the all girl academy . Her 7th and 8th grade math teacher was the same. Mrs. Smith was a firm, challenging but engaging teacher. She never used math as a threat and never sarcastically assured her students would be in summer school. My daughter excelled according to state exams and benchmark tests.
Engineering teachers took it upon themselves to place her in their classes. She has done great under their instruction. She earned good grades and the engineering teacher has stayed in contact with us ever since. My daughter loved talking about school

Cons: I am not confident in the school's abiity to handle students with special needs. (I taught students in autism and special education for more than a decade.) While there are a ton of brilliant students in the district with special needs, there have been a few instructors in the past that demonstrated they feel students with special needs were a hinderance rather than a student that needed differenitiated instruction and adjusted disciplinary responses. Homework does come up missing/stolen from time to time. Take pictures of it via email. Emails have time stamps that can not be effected by outside interference. During virtual schooling, we had eliminated missing homework problems during digital uploads and could resolve problems with technical difficulties because of screen shots. Her grades did great during virtual.
Although we have had great experiences with the majority of the faculty, staff & paraprofessionals, two instructors have caused so much damage to my daughter's mental health and her progress. Refusing to talk to us at the beginning of the grading cycle, placing zeros for ungraded accepted work instead of leaving the category blank, asking for hub assignments during professional development/vacation days, creating so much work that other teachers gave up their classtime to allow students to work on packets, finish same day classwork, and so many worksheets from one particular class that there was no down time when she came home. My daughter would be watching college professors and khan academy to fill in missing steps.
The previous year my daughter was showing improvement and now I was told this year that she can not keep up and needs to be at another school. Noted. We are moving schools.

The SCHOOL, no. It follows a path of curriculum and some students are left behind. From experience, I've had much trouble in subjects and I asked about tutorials, websites, notes, etc.. The tutorials are unavailable after school most of the times because of the 4:00pm dismissal time. (Leaving Advocacy and Lunch as Substitute.) And the substitutes and remaining time we have left puts stress on teachers as well as students; 30 minutes is not enough of time to tutor children on something they're troubled on, especially when trying to eat.

Posted: November 9, 2018

To be honest, I feel like I'm treated as a unit, a number in a factory of products. My experiences with the school has been great, however, there's only things that need to be improved... I feel as everyone is active but there's a piece missing.

Posted: November 9, 2018

Because some classes are short, It appears they use homework as a reliability, therefore giving students much work and not leaving time for extracurriculars, which the enforce and push on greatly.

Posted: November 9, 2018

Over the years, the school has gotten less strict, both great and bad. To develop the strong character, students sacrifice sleep, personality, or even friends to be here. It may sound all devotion, but most aren't happy, but they're forced, since their parents expect highly of them. They do develop these traits however, it's only the way they do it.

Furthermore, the ways it has been less strict is that newcomers don't take the school seriously, leaving trash and damaged property as well as some disobedient behavior. They, however, do get older and mature, but I believe they should mature and be taught that character is important earlier.

Posted: November 9, 2018

It's a bit under-or-over on this topic, as some students have been saying things about the leadership.
"Oh, they only listen to the seniors"
"They never give Middle School anything..."
"I wish we had more field trips.."
But the leadership is actually great, but I wish they found a way to discipline children with lower behavior in the grade than ruin everyone's learning experience.

The pace that we learn is too quick. Its always material then the next class is a test. It is challenging, because they assign so much homework theres not much time to study.

Posted: February 2, 2018

The teachers assign too much homework to the point where there is no time to study. This is my 2nd year at YWCPA, and ever since I started I have had 0 time for extracurricular activities that would be beneficial to my resume.

Posted: February 2, 2018

Most teachers at YWCPA are extremely lazy, and just go through and already made powerpoint that they found online, and assign work just to keep us busy.

My overall experience has been depressing. I feel like a whole different person and not in a positive way. If I could go back and change high schools I would in a heart beat. The environment is negative and there is so much work, and not enough time for other things.

After attending for three years I wish I could've gone somewhere else. My experiences were terrible, in fact, one of the girls that graduated eight grade with me gave birth to her child that same year. Yup, that's what they don't tell you. The principle is selective and favors certain students over others, same for the teachers. The student body is not only toxic but a breeding ground for self-conscious thoughts as well as actions. It would take too many hands to count the number of girls I met who self-harmed or had the warning signs of an eating disorder while being at that school. There's an inferiority complex shown not only in students, but also in teachers. The teachers only care about the STAAR exam grades, and I can honestly say now that my math class experiences were horrible due to the fact that I only learned what was said to be on the STAAR exam. No backstory, nothing after that. The months spent after the STAAR were basically free periods for most classes. Bullying is a terrible epidemic at this school and here's a warning: regardless of what your child tells you, you may either be breeding a bully or be witnessing the effects of one being bullied. All in all, the only thing I can deem this school good for is allowing your daughter to explore their sexuality/gender identity, if you (as a parent) are okay with that sort of thing.

My daughter has attended YWCPA for 4 years and I could not have selected a better school for her. She is eager to attend school everyday, talks about college and career goals, and learns not just academics but what it is to carry herself as a respectable, empowered young woman. The academics are top notched. Being an educator myself, I can see through smoke and mirrors but YWCPA offers a challenging, relevant curriculum that is preparing our girls to be leaders in this world. The teachers and leadership team KNOW their scholars and build relationships that make it safe to think outside the box and hold them to high standards. If I could give YWCPA 10 stars I would!

I am so happy with the response my daughter is getting from being at YWCPA. She is only in the 10th grade and has received 18 letters from colleges and universities all over the United States. We are still receiving them daily. Not to mention the Emails. She has began to make decisions on what she wants to do in the future as far as her career is concerned, and comes home everyday telling me about what she has learned at school or on one of the field trips. Thanks YWCPA.

I love the all girls concept and this is a safe school. Unfortunately, too many teachers are not utilizing current methods to assist students in being successful. Blended Learning is truly needed at this campus. If this campus hopes to increase AP test passing rate, try blended learning.

I would move my child, but the other options have even more things wrong.

Posted: December 15, 2016

Bad behavior is not tolerated. Keep up the good job with discipline.

Posted: December 15, 2016

All students do not learn the same. They are only interested in the gifted and talented students.

Posted: December 15, 2016

The Principal seems to care about the students. However; as the campus has grown things are being delegated to some that are not competent and do not have the students best interest. Too many deans come and go. Teachers are not posting assignments on a timely basis. Summer school grades??? Never got one.

Some try to reach every students learning style. Others just want to teach the students with high grades.

YWCPA hisd is a good school. Although the school is new, teachers are extremely dedicated to ALL students academic success. Just look at the schools test scores and compare them to district and state averages. The results speaks for itself.

Posted: June 1, 2015

The school claims to develop honesty, integrity and fairness, but It really depends on the student and their relationship with administration.

Posted: June 1, 2015

There are many instances of favoritism by the principal. The classes are rigid, as a preparatory academy should be, but many of the students are over worked.

This is the first public female only school in this district. This school is a STEM program and has been in existence for four years. The school first started with 6th and 9th graders totaling about 200 students. The school has added students for each year for all grades and this year completed the full enrollment of 6th - 12th graders. There has been some bumps in the road of course. However, I feel that this school is the best choice for my daughter and would be for yours. My daughter has thrived in this learning environment. She has taken on challenges and done things here that has given her so much confidences. She has had many visits to colleges, NASA, museum and participated in Science and Engineering competitions each year. The school is still going through some growing pains due to the nature of this new concept for the district. However, what they are doing they are doing quite well. The students are testing in top percentage for the district. I invite you to come and check it out.

This is my daughter's first year at YWCPA. I love it, even if she don't. She is challenged, has become organized & knows that just good enough, is not good enough. The principal, teachers & staff are extraordinary!

Posted: April 7, 2015

My daughter attends YWCPA and enjoys the STEM and AP courses she is offered. The curriculum offered are at high standards and the young ladies are challenged daily. We have the best administration and support any parent could wish for. I love the STEM curriculum and opportunities to visit college and learn to their full potential. Great school!!!

THis is my daughter's second year at this school and I feel it is a "work of art in progress". What I mean by this is that this is a fairly new school but it has made great stides in this small amount of time. The principal, Ms. Thomas, is a "phenomenal" person and principal. She is working hard to make these girls and this school something Houston, Texas and the country might some day really take a look! The majority of the staff appear to really want to make a difference as well. Don't get me wrong, not all of them, but this happens at every school. I would like to see a little more of the "high school" experience" (i.e. dances, proms, homecoming activities) but I feel its coming. Just watch God work thru this woman! It's a really good school, academically and I feel that it is growing into a great school! Parents, we have to help her and not expect her to do it all.

I've attended the school for three years since 6th grade and I have to say I'm very disappointed in the overall experience. The school offers a good education yes but when it comes to having a good middle school experience for me and other middle schooler's and a good high school experiences for the high schooler's they are slaking. The principle is very unpolite, some of the teachers are rude and I've had conversations with other students that have said they sometimes feel scared to ask some of the teachers questions because the teachers will be rude about it or be smart or have an attitude. The principle also have shown favoritism with some of the students. Another issue is the people working in the main office are very unpolite and unfriendly. they always seem like they don't want to be there and when parents or students walk in the main office they should be greeted with friendly people because those are the first people you come in contact with when you walk in the help they give comes of rude and in an annoyed tone. All of the things said by me here are things that are repeated throughout the school by almost every student.

So far so good. This is my daughter's 1st year at the school and I have seen a 360 change in her. The teachers are totally different from what my experiences have been in the past. The attentiveness and small class room size is great. My only wish is for an updated building and additional extra-curricular activities. I m trying to convince her to stay for high school vs going somewhere else where she will just be a number. This school really cares and reminds me of my high school, the focus was on the entire individual not just test scores.

Posted: August 20, 2014

Last year was my daughter's first year at YWCPA. I was very impressed. The great majority of the teachers were invested on my child's success. They offered tutorials after school and on Saturdays. I had problems figuring out the various after school opportunities, coming from the private school sector, but we are ready this year. Communication was an issue initially, however, out was resolved wuickly and efficiently. The only real negative I have is the office staff could be more helpful and enthusiastic about their interaction with parents and students. I. E. I had to visit the office on an occasion and stood at the desk for 12 minutes while one clerk finished her personal conversation and another clerk merely looked at me...never offering to assist or help. The school could use office staff that "appear" th want to be there. Overall, this is a really good school.

Posted: July 29, 2014

This school was terrible. The teachers were disrespectful. There have been many fights in the restrooms, girls smoke there also. This was probably the worse school I have been in. I'm grateful my parents aren't forcing me to spend another year here. The staff has favoritism towards specific students. I regret showing my parents the brochure. Worst decision ever.

Posted: June 27, 2014

It is about to be the third year that I have attended this school and overall it's not that bad. Many people expect schools to be perfect but in reality nothing is perfect because if it was there would be nothing to learn... The challenges the school faces will help the girls in the future. They say the teachers are horrible but really they just don't like the subject. Many of the reviews below are from middle school students who think they hate Young Women's, when really they hate school in general... They think it would be better to go to a school that is co-ed or focused on sports. When really they are at one of the best schools in Houston... When the girls stop being a negative Nancy and start being a positive Polly then the school really will be AMAZING!!!! So yeah the school just started 4 years ago, and it was put in the oldest building some of us girls have ever seen. But this school is amazing and any girl who got in is one of the luckiest girls in the world... Also if your daughter is going to be starting in Middle School they should know that there will always be a girl to help them.... -Sincerely a 8th Grader of the 2014-2015 school year...

This school is absolutely terrible. I left my last school because I was being bullied by another student , this time I'm leaving this school because I was bullied by several peers. It's amazing that people who are supposed to mold the minds of the future are corrupting them. More than once I was targeted because of my personality, I'm outspoken yet respectful and I refuse to be talked to with a lack of respect. On several occasions I told my mom and she spoke with my teachers and nothing was done. Not only was I treated rudely my grades were compromised due to their hatred towards me. It was embarrassing because I was late to school on a daily basis because my moms a nurse and has to drive my younger brother to school in Galveston daily then return and bring me to school. They couldn't understand and constantly gave me lunch detention because of it. The office workers are rude and unorganized and my information was lost as well as my enrollment packet. there was an Instagram issue that concerned my friends and nothing was done about it. A charade is played everyday to block out the truth but this school is absolutely terrible please don't send your daughter here!

This school makes SEVERAL promises to the students and parents but have yet to fulfill them. If you like teachers losing your work, teachers with HORRIBLE attitude teachers being messy about other students business which is so unprofessional teachers and administration lack of communication about events etc and teachers who are not even certified to teach and could not teach even if they tried then this is the school for you When I was accepted, i was made to sign a contract stating they i had to complete two years in this school. The two years that i stayed were HORRIBLE. I came from a private school and they were more organized than YWCPA. The teachers are lazy, messy, and have lack of professionalism. They stoop to the teenagers level. I have credits from college courses i have already taken and they have yet to place them on my transcript so i am taking classes i don't need. This school has screwed up my future and my chance of getting accepted into another school. They basically kept me for my GREAT STATS. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME MONEY OR FUTURE WITH THIS HORRIBLE SCHOOL OF Fabrications

YWCPA is a great school if you are willing to put the work in to achieve your educational goals. The staff there really pushes you to do your absolute best. There are rules just like any other school you will be held to the standard of the hand book so make sure you read it before you the agreement. If you are like me and not so hot on the all girls thing trust me you will get over it, there are plenty of opportunities to socialize with the opposite gender.

Posted: May 3, 2014

YWCPA is a terrible school. The students are very rude and inconsiderate of other people. The staff is no better. They show no personal interest toward you or the things you care about. The biology teacher is by far, hands down , the most mean spirited person I have ever encountered. She does not take into consideration that we as students are people, with very different lives. Some of which are harder than others. She shows no compassion towards you or your situation, be it a loss of money, or even loss of a loved one. I will MOST DEFINITELY be leaving this school. Please, do not waste your time here.

Posted: February 27, 2014

This is a very good school it offers a lot of opportunities for the girls. I recommend it. Even though the uniforms may be to expensive, you wont regret it. Your daughter might hate it at first but after a while she will start liking it. If your daughter doesn't do her work or is that type of girl who is like a rebel don't waste your time she wont fit in their. They offer very good teaching in all the subjects especially in Math. They have AP classes for social studies. They may not offer as many curricular activities but if we make this school go higher soon our daughters or future students will have many things to do. I wish the best to this wonderful school. If i told you I wasn't the parent who made their daughter go to this school my daughter choose to go their, I was actually surprise because most of us know that many girls would not like to got to an only girls school.

Ywcpa is the worse experience i have ever experienced in my life . when i first looked into ywcpa i thought nothing but the best of this school . but overtime things began to get worse and worse ! The principal doesnt take time out with the students here and she doesnt treat us like actual kids . im so stressed out at this school because they reqiure so much with no motivation . worse built sisterhood i have ever experienced!

I am a high school student and I attended YWCPA my tenth grade year. I was really nervous about starting there and as soon as I walked through the doors, the feeling only increased. There was nothing welcoming about the depressing colors or the rushed and easily irriateded staff. I spent most of my sophomore year there and felt like it was more of a summer camp or holding place for girls. The only reason I liked the school was because I became really good friends with about 3 other girls. There was so much drama with the Middle schoolers and even the immature girls in my year. They say they are forming leaders for tomorrow but it was more of just a holding spot for girls. The school was not ready for high school students and without a doubt high school students felt like the black sheep of the family. I left for the last 6 weeks of the year and went to my home school. I realized how far behind I was and that I was taking classes I didn't need. YWCPA was by far the worst school I attended.

Posted: January 13, 2014

Terrible. Ghetto student wannabes. Students talk a lot of trash. Fighting, cursing, bullying. Don't let the uniforms fool you. It is the worst school my daughter has ever attended.

Posted: December 20, 2013

I am an eighth grader that attended YWCPA from sixth grade to seventh grade and honestly it was just terrible . The students are extremely rude and I was bullied in seventh grade . I told the principal and they didn't do anything about it. The school is very unorganized and the principal is by far the worst principal I've had throughout my life. The teachers are organized at times but most of the time unorganized. Students always get into fights and there is always drama. The teachers teach very well though but I wouldn't recommend this to anybody . YWCPA is by far the worst school I have ever attended.

Posted: December 2, 2013

My daughter has been going there sense the 6th grade and is now in the 8th grade, this will be her last year. The teachers are very unorganized and so is the principle. They have lost my child's work multiple times and I know they have because I have handed it to them myself and the next they they have lost it. This is not a good school and the only reason my daughter stayed is because when you first get here they make you sign a contract saying that you have to stay till high school.

We are super excited about the full academic experience our daughter is being offered at YWCPA. As parents who invested in private school education for several years and even gave charter school a try, it was refreshing to find a school that finally delivered on all they promoted to offer their students. We desperately wanted an academic environment that was challenging yet balanced and we found that at YWCPA. Although the academic work load was truly college preparatory and proved to be extremely challenging in the beginning, our daughter, she learned what she was made of and rose to the challenge with the support of her classmates who she now calls her sisters and the amazing and committed teachers and administrators who kept her encouraged. Today she is feeling accomplished, understanding the road to accomplishing all her goals may not be easy, but the preparation and opportunity she is provided makes the journey worth while. We are thankful she has embraced this opportunity and we are confident that she will be well prepared to pursue whatever career path she chooses.

My school is just extraordinary!! I mean everyday I get on the bus and think, 'I wonder what will happen today?' Everyday at the YWCPA, is an adventure, I have my friends, awesome teachers, and wonderful staff members looking out for me. However, the best, is my principal, Ms. Thomas. She dedicates herself to making the best for us. If it weren't for her, our school would be nothing. Although, one thing I can say, is that I love my school.

It's a nice school. I guess i like it has a calm learning environment and the fine arts station is nice. I think something that would make the school better is if you improve the bathrooms.

Posted: November 3, 2013

The school is alright. Coming from a student, the uniforms are a bit too pricy...some parents can't afford to spend at LEAST 250$ for something that us girls will wear for about a year or two tops. There are also some snobby girls...and bullying is a BIG problem. Some people just start hating on you for no reason! And there is WAAAY too much homework. I understand that this is a college prep. school, but they could give us a little less homework! Also, we get in trouble for things that we can't control. Today at lunch, we were held back because we weren't in a line. There are too many rules! I was about to get suspended for wearing an undershirt! IN THE FALL! The only good thing about this school are the laptops. That's all I have to say, and this is coming from an anonymous 7th grader. Hope you liked my review! P.s. This year is WORSE than last year.

This school is amazing but people criticize it for no reason. First of all the building will need to be renovated of course because it was made in 1925 that's a school that's 88 years old. Yes the uniforms are pricey but If they are too expensive you CAN contact the main office who will give you a scholarship for uniforms.. As for bullying the problem if bullying is almost nonexistent bullying happens once in a blue moon. Once it happens it can be reported to the principal, the dean, or even a teacher all of which are in the hallway during passing periods. Our school even has a counselor your daughter can talk too. I'm hurt people would write such things about a school they seem to know nothing about. Our school has given us so many weeks where free dress is allowed. If you want something done in our school like a fundraiser or a dance just by talking to the teacher you can get it done. I've done so much to get our school's name out. Don't think badly about the girls in our school. There is no such thing as "the hood" or "third ward" we are not ghetto but a sisterhood of excellence and if you opened the doors of our old school you would see that.

I love going to YWCPA this is my third year going here and its so amazing how in little time i got to learn many things and experience being with nothing but girls. Are principal is very nice and always has a apositive attitude towards all the ladies.shes always ask if we need somwthing and how are we doing. All the teachers there are nice as well they always have postive comments towards the kids all they want for us is the best. As well as i get to talk to all the girls without disrepect it is an awesome school. So choose the best for your child send them to YWCPA to become roses like everybody else. We have sports that they may enjoy doing.YWCPA is all about respect so come on and apply. By applying will inpact the rest of ur life so do it know.

My experience at this school has been nothing but great. The teachers challenge me to be the best I can be. Sometimes it's hard because, but it is a college preparatory so I expected it. Believe it or not, I wanted to be here. I told my parents about the school and they supported me. There are some girls who go to the school, but they don't like the extra work that's required. They complain a lot about the teachers giving too much work, but the majority of us want to go to college, so we appreciate everything the teachers do. Ms. Thomas is an amazing principal. She walks the halls and asks us about our day. My principal in elementary and middle school always stayed in his office, we never saw him. He definitely didn't know our names. I LOVE my school!

So far I find the administration to be totally and completely unacceptable. There is a complete lack of communication and the administration seems lost when you ask questions. They've only been in class two weeks and I'm already researching alternative options to move my kid immediately. Very disappointing. Also, don't believe them when they tell you that your kid will be tested and placed in a class level based on their knowledge. They don't do that for any subject except math. So my child is repeating the same English, Science, etc. that she did last year in her 5th grade Vanguard class. Also, be ready to shell out over $500 in uniforms. And since they don't make it known, I'll tell you...order your uniforms AT LEAST 3 weeks in advance or your child will be HARASSED DAILY by teachers and administration for not having their complete uniform.
