I saw bad reviews in this site, but this is my child’s second year with this school and LOVES it. The kids are 100% more well mannered than others, teachers are beyond helpful and the communication is ridiculously good. IDEA has been a blessing.

Overall I must say that I was fooled by the reviews that I read when applying for the school. The vast majority of the staff needs to learn "people skills". Whenever you present a concern to them, they make you feel like you are bothering them. The school appearance and maintenance is AWESOME, but what's the use of a great building if the staff doesn't live up to it. Teachers can be counted with one hand the ones that are good, and those are the ones that try to keep the school elevated, if it was for that handful of teachers the school would be even worse. The organization and some of the rules are ridiculous, I understand uniform policies, but taking a student to the point that they are freezing during the winter months because they will only allow the jackets with the IDEA logo which is a very thin jacket. So yes, overall I am VERY disappointed with the school as well as the majority of the staff.

I disagree with this. The reason is because my son last year and so far this year comes home with so much homework that he is at home sometimes up to 11:00 p.m. just trying to finish a meet his teacher's requirements. On the other end I have a different child that receives little to no homework at all. Then I have my elementary scholars which receive homework which they mostly don't understand so I have to constantly email the teachers in hope that they provide some type of explanation and at times I don't receive any response.

This goes tied to the previous review, and in addition to what I previously mentioned, some teachers have a very unapproachable attitude when it comes to a parent asking for assistance with their children.

Again, this goes also tied to my previous comment about the teachers. I have seen some teachers that will talk down to the children, this is not a way to develop strong character, and it definitely does not show respect or compassion. I understand that there may be some children that require a "firm hand", but that doesn't justify talking down to them. In regards to integrity, well that also needs some improvement. The school has a way of manipulating their overall test scores by using the students that are more advanced in their classes to boost the overall score of the school.

The leadership team is very unapproachable. When you ask for any type of explanation or assistance they reply with a very nasty attitude. I come from regular public schools in both San Antonio, TX and Florida and t treatment my family received in both school districts was far better. When I applied to be a part of this school, I did it with the hope of providing my children with the best education opportunity possible. I did my research and found this was a good school. To my surprise it has not been the best choice for them.

I cannot agree to this fully because 2 of my child's teachers were aware that he was further ahead with the material they were covering in their class and failed to adjust to allow him to continue to progress, yet instead they used him as a "tutor" for his peers. He has always liked helping others but he would come home sometimes saying how much he was getting bored in school because he wasn't learning anything.

In regard to bullying, I thankfully never had anything escalate with my children, but that is probably because I will be in the school the next day if any of my children are ever bullied. But I did here of cases in which teachers themselves would bully children. So I cannot speak for this metric.

Unfortunately it seems the teachers have a difficult time handling middle and high school students. I firmly believe its the demographics that most of these kids come from.

The teachers are the strength of this school and they are doing their best despite being handicapped by lack of support from administration. The schools objectives are clearly outlined by IDEA's core values but they are definitely over-enrolling. The Carver Academy feeds into Carver College Prep but new students are still enrolled. If a new student is enrolled at the Academy and has an older sibling, the school automatically grants enrollment, regardless of the population at CP. The student teacher ratio in some grades is 35 to 1 and the teachers are not able to provide the level of rigor which would help students deepen their understanding of material. There are many dedicated teachers who give their utmost but it is impossible to provide a quality education and individual attention with classes this large. Another problem is that while the demographic composition of the school is low income, the level of support provided for students with critical educational needs is not adequate. There is no ALE (life skills) accommodation so any students with real needs are sent to other IDEA campuses. The biggest problem with the school, and IDEA in general is that teachers must give students many opportunities to complete assignments in order to avoid entering a zero in the grade book. This creates an unrealistic expectation for students who believe they are being prepared for college, when in truth, they are being trained to believe that hard work is optional.

Students who are continuous classroom disruptors are not provided with any significant consequences for their actions. Due to persistence standards set by the district, administration hesitates to discipline the offenders. In School Suspension (ISS) consists of students sitting in the conference room and not being required to do any work. One student spent ISS sleeping on the couch in the principal's office. Another student has been caught cheating, stealing, swearing at teachers and walked off campus. Administration is limited due to insufficient staffing and the goal of minimizing the number of departing students. This is a shame because there are many students who want to learn but can't, due to frequent disruptions, not to mention the high number of students who are wait listed.

The promises of the IDEA program have not reached IDEA Carver College Prep. The administration talks down to parents and does not maintain the promised communication required for successful students. Teachers unqualified to teach middle school last year are promoted this year instead of being dismissed or retrained. We will have to see how this year evolves before we decide on returning with our child next school term but I am not hopeful. A mid-term change might be in our future.

Teachers belittle students and provoke them into acting out then add a discipline referral to their school record for their reaction.
This is bullying in the worst form as students are powerless and defenseless.

It has been a disappointment having my 3 kids here. One of my kids has a learning disability in reading and is 3 grades below her grade level but I was told that she can t attend tutoring because she s not as low as the other kids. This has greatly affected her self-esteem and now she doesn't even want to go to school. My daughter on the other hand is 1 years above grade level but the school does nothing to challenge or engage her. The bullying is out of control and she's often teased and called a nerd & teacher's pet because she reads a lot & has manners. My oldest son is just above grade level but the kids in his overcrowded class are so rude & disruptive that he can barely focus on learning & the teachers can hardly control the behaviors. We have had 4 principals in 2 years and this year alone my son has had 4 different teachers quit! The administration keeps asking families to bear with them until the new building comes and things get better. Even if they have to go to 3 different schools, I have to do whatever it takes so my kids education doesn't suffer any longer.

This is my daughter's 2nd & LAST year here. Everything I was "sold" about being a school that prepares students for college has been just talk. There were some good teachers here last year who worked really hard but they all left! Who could blame them? There are SO many disruptive students who don't want to learn that it affects all the other kids. My daughter complains that she can't focus in her AR class with 40+ students, 10 computers & 1 teacher. The new principal & the assistant principal who came from IDEA South Flores don't do anything about these disruptive kids except avoid parents when they come to speak with them. Then if a miracle happens & you do get to speak with either of them, they are both condescending & speak down to you like you re a child. My daughter was above grade level when she came to this school but has complained that classes are boring and the teachers only teach the things she learned last year because other students are so far behind. This isn't fair to my child or other students who don't need remedial help. At first I was shocked to see so many parents take their kids out last year but now understand why so many more have left this year.

It s sad how the main IDEA website talks about their excellent academics, IB programs and being top 10 nationwide. However they are clearly NOT talking about IDEA Carver. There is nothing excellent about these academics - All the kids do is STAAR test prep. Like some of the other parents said - there s no outlet like art, technology, music or sports. Both of my children have come home stressed out because of the non-stop test prep. Only my older child gets sports but nothing for my younger daughter. PE is a joke because there is no gymnasium & then the kids don t even get PE or recess when it s test prep time! My son said that he has friends who are teased & even bullied during recess because there s not enough staff outside for all the students during recess. It seems like there was no plan before making Carver Christian an IDEA school. This school is nothing like how all the other IDEA schools are described. I have a friend whose sons attend IDEA South Flores even that IDEA school is NOTHING like this one. You can tell the principals and teachers really care about the students over there and actually do whatever it takes to make sure the parents are involved.

As a first year Carver Prep parent, I began the school yr excited and with high expectations... Unfortunately, the realization is that "people" are the makeup of any school. I consider myself very active in my child's education and participation of outside activities. My College Prep child has always had a positive educational experience, no matter her surroundings. I am aware of the negativeness occurring at the school, but neither my child or her academics have been impacted "negatively" speaking... I do however wish the teacher-to-parent communication were more effective. I shall continue to make that extra effort, even if the school does not.

I am extremely disgusted with this "school." To be a real college prep school it should at least have high quality teachers certified to teach middle school; rigorous academics; a variety of enriching classes for students who are advanced; high expectations al& accountability for students, parents & especially the teachers and a competent staff who can communicate effectively with it's' school community - mainly parents. All the school offers is academics which is mediocre at best - of the middle school teachers only one has any sense of classroom management and is even worthy of teaching our children. Another teacher antagonizes & provokes students to a point of no return. Students have brought drugs to school, thrown chairs in fits of rage, bullied other students via cliques, had fights without the administration even knowing, had students wandering around campus "hooking up" and MORE without engaging or properly communicating anything to parents. It's as if parents aren't part of this whole equation.
