My daughter is a senior this year, and I can say we have had great experiences with this school. The staff have always been available and understanding. The building is modern and contains many amenities, with a modern layout featuring shared spaces. The curriculum includes project-based learning, and students participate in group activities and multiple exhibitions each year in the evenings. It's a STEM-focused curriculum with small class sizes.

I thought this school would be different since theyre magnet and diverse but its actually discriminating, staff have ugly attitudes, and theres nothing inviting about this school just another regular school apart of HISD in third ward with a few differences in curriculum. Its sad to say but HISD is falling apart I have currently moved my child to another district for better learning experience and engagement with parents.

If you want a school that focuses on developing professional communication and dispute resolution skills, how to work well with others on projects, learn practical skills that students can use outside the classroom, as well as great academics, then Energy HS has it all. The school understands theres been a shift in community and industry needs and realizes that the community and employers have no use for students who can only be successful in the classroom and have no idea how to be and effective contributing member of a workplace. Recruiters often say Energy students interview very well in general which is a result of student having to give presentations to adult leaders every quarter. The school is also mindful that their role in education is to inspire and teach students to have a love of learning and introduce them to new career fields they might not otherwise have known about . Not burn the students out before they even reach college.

I have a daughter currently in the 11th grade and I have a son also that graduated from Energy Institute last year. I love the project based learning and how it pertains to real life experiences/situations. I love how the curriculum forces the students to think for themselves. I also appreciate the size of the classes and how the teachers know each of the students. I have no issues with getting in touch with the teachers or the deans for any information I need or to schedule a meeting. Plenty of opportunity for tutorials as well. Also there have been wonderful opportunities offered to my children that I don't know would have been offered at other schools. Focusing on technology/energy has been a plus for both of my children even though they may not go directly in the energy field. I also have student athletes and it has not been a problem to balance going to Energy Institute and playing sports. School schedule was accommodating. I would highly recommend Energy Institute.

Our son and daughter have loved their Freshman year at Energy. The problem and project based learning environment is teaching them incredible teamwork and presentation skills.
We have been impressed with the facilities, staff, and teachers. The PTO is getting more involved and if you are on the fence please request a tour of campus.
Seeing the kids in action will show you the good vibes on campus.

The homework doesn't usually seem like busy work just to have homework. It's usually project work or preparing for exams.

The teachers get to know the students and really help them more than just teaching them. The grades are posted online, so everyone can see grades all the time. They also use an online system to post assignments which makes it easy to keep up with what's going on.

Project based learning has helped shy students learn to work with other students and helped them learn to talk in front of other people.
Posted: June 6, 2019
The students have deans and are able to get to know them well. They encourage them to join clubs, to do summer programs, and apply for a lot of different opportunities.
Posted: June 6, 2019
There is a lot of help from the teachers for students who have learning differences.
Posted: June 6, 2019
I have not seen any major issues. People who have had small issues seem to be happy with how things have been dealt with.

Energy is a hidden gem in Houston.

They need to work on customer service. They input grades late, dont return calls or emails. I wish they would at least try to communicate more effectively.

Posted: June 6, 2019
Some teachers are great at returning calls or emails some never respond to your emails.
Posted: June 6, 2019
They try to work with all students.
Posted: June 6, 2019
Deans dont return calls or emails. You never hear from deans unless is negative I wish they had counselors
Posted: June 6, 2019
No, they call you when your child is already failing. Teachers input grades late so you will always see false grades until the very end of the cycle.

The administrators at this school have integrated technology and energy into the curriculum, the classroom environment and even the facility itself. With project-based learning the kids are developing their soft skills as well, which is becoming increasingly more important in the tech world.

I was blown away... I understand more traditional parents might not understand all their methods, but coming from the tech world myself, I can see how effective their programs can be and how much these students will benefit in the long-term. It's like the Juliard for tech!

Very good! As a parent, I love the PBL approach to education. The students are learning to apply their knowledge in ways that make the lessons meaningful and lasting. No one at this school will ask ,"Why do I need Algebra? ".

I have just graduated from this school. It was the worst 4 years ever. If you go to their facebook page, the students that are always on their photos are the only ones that matter to them. This school taught me that you have to fight to get to the top. Its supposed to be a leadership school but it was a war for who was going to be on top.

I will concur with another reviewer that the administration appeared very unorganized and unprofessional. I interviewed with this campus many years ago when they were first opening. At first my interview was cancelled and rescheduled twice (after driving almost 40 minutes to reach the interview location) and when I finally interviewed with the administration the principal was responding to texts on her cell phone. The dean on instruction also appeared very nervous and inexperienced. I was really disappointed in the overall demeanor and attitude. 1 year later during a summer education program I had the opportunity to talk to the teacher that was eventually hired for the position that I interviewed for. He told me that the campus administration was extremely unorganized and he was in the process of transferring to another campus once the new school year began. Now after several years it seems that they still have issues with organization. If a campus can't run smoothly with 400 students what will happen when their numbers double later this year? This is clearly a sign of poor leadership and when there is poor leadership at the top it will filter down to everything else. Hopefully things will turn around one day but I have a feeling it will require a major change in leadership before that will happen.

They seem to have a high teacher turn-over for only having been open 4 years. The school administration seems rather disorganized and unprofessional (i.e. not returning emails, or getting back in a timely manner). In my experience, if there are issues in the administration they trickle down to the teachers, staff, and students. Am a little leery of this school now even though the PBL concept and financial support for the school is impressive.

The concept is great and the partnerships are impressive......Since the students are forced to work in groups armed with old laptops all year for most major assignments, the opportunity to really learn something new is hindered by the the stress of someone in the group not carrying their load and a few teachers failing hold the right students accountable or give enough direction and support. This is the first year my student did not score exemplary on all STAAR tests, so I am beginning to wonder if the hassle of the commute and the students being stuck in an old elementary school until who knows when is really worth it

The Energy Institute High School is the first energy school in the nation that is focused on energy and STEM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Its use of project based learning (PBL), allows students to think and analyze in a way of a real work place environment which in return is preparing them for the future. The school also has corporate partnerships with organizations such as IPAA/PESA which help the students through various field trips and guest speakers throughout the year. As energy first graduating class, i've come to understand really what this school is about and what we are made up of. In a school of this small size, we have different types of students a group of kids who are extremely dedicated G.P.A. hungry and want to take advantage of the school its extremely dedicated staff to help you become successful and fully taking advantages of the field trips and many guest speakers, and the other group are the ones just trying to make it by hoping that somehow and somewhere some guardian angel will magically fix their life. Over the years the majority of these people leave due to the curriculum , and wash up in their home schools. Even with this divide it is a incredible active and growing school filled with immense possibilities, new technology and excitement.

I say its good school, but our school is littered with students that don't want to be at this school a huge amount of the already small population is filled with students that were forced by there parents to attend our school, this reduces the student and parent involvement in our school. The school is full of aspiring student that want to be apart of the pioneering of our school. The teachers are committed to paving the way for student to achieve higher education, and an even more involved parents. The school has some flaws like the lack of freedom it gives the student causing students to feel like prisoners when they walk down the halls instead of allowing the students to have free roam and giving them the feel independence (that's a teens perspective though). Make sure your child wants to go to the school sending a child to a school that it doesn't want to be at will only bring the school down as a whole this will not promote student or parent participation, and only makes it harder for the school to gain popularity and a good rep.

While this is my son's 1st year, I have to report great organization and above average support for my son's adjustment to high school. I am a school administrator on another campus and I was looking for a smaller learning environment with some unique learning experiences for my son. He was accepted to a couple other larger schools but we chose EIHS. The teachers have been incredibly organized, making efforts to communicate with students and assist in their learning via PBL (Problem Based Learning). Great work skills for their future!

This school is over rated and unorganized. The principal lacks leadership. The dean of students is not helpful and lacks personality.
