Worst school my daughter has so far attended. Tend to put kids on the spot and instead of mentoring and providing a safe environment they do the complete opposite. As of learning, the worst, my daughter has learn more with a private tutor in a month than being at this school for a whole year. Teachers do not enforce the positive and instead enforce negativity, bulling etc. Even if you bring issues up it tends to not go anywhere

I'm so sad reading the negative reviews of this school. My son attended AFIA when it first opened, during middle school. He graduated from the high school as the Valedictorian. He is now in his junior year at UT Austin. AFIA was the PERFECT place for him, but I understand it's not for everyone. He was always very good at managing his time and working independently. He loved his school, classmates, and teachers. He's got great memories of his time at AFIA. I wish every student would have the same experience he did. Good luck guys!

I had high hopes for this school but have been let down in so many ways. My child didn't learn anything this past year and I mean not a single thing. Read the other parents review about asking for assistance and feedback. I have emailed teachers, administrators and even the main office and out of all the emails I sent I only received a handful of responses. The teaching is terrible and through my experience with the teachers we had to deal with, only one seemed genuine and seemed to care about the work being presented. Support is exaggerated and documented to protect themselves however there is a continuation of bullying going on and no true intervention. This school is more like a day care for troubled kids and our child has a learning disability so getting picked on is happening daily. When we get notified we get the same response that we talked to the other kid and the parents were notified. Accommodations for our child were documented and never followed. This is not a safe school. If your child cannot stand up for themselves then they will be bullied and mentally defeated. This is nothing more than a very nice alternative school. We thought this is where kids with true learning disabilities could thrive and smile and feel accepted but they can't when kids that have been kicked out of other schools come here to just curse at kids and threaten them. Don't be fooled by the nice Bandera Rd. campus.

This school SUCKS. I went here last year for 7th grade and all they care about is if you are popular or not, if your child is LGBTQ+ or disabled, they will get bullied. My friend has autism and goes here, he said it sucks and they didn't follow his 504 plan once, they made sure to exclude him as well. As for me, they called my parents over any little inconvenience and teachers don't know how to teach, most of the time they treat you like a friend and don't care if you are missing work as well as the HUGE amount of bullying that the faculty knows about but doesn't do anything because those are the same kids who are even keeping the school running. Don't even get me started on the education, it sucked, teachers don't help you with anything and fail to help you in the long run, I had to relearn half of the stuff I was supposed to learn there because the teachers aren't qualified, the staff treats you like garbage, and nobody there respects you unless you're popular or pretty. Drugs are frequented there and I once even had a girl ask me if I wanted to vape with her in the bathroom. So my advice would be to NOT choose this school and get your kid into another school that will teach you to 'be inspired, find joy" and other stupid stuff like that.

Great idea poor execution.

This school is an amazing idea in a perfect world. In a perfect world this school would let you take the class you are in at your own pace and learn in your own unique way. But since we don't live in a perfect world this school doesn't work and half of the teachers only teach one type of learner and it's the minority of the student population.

My daughter is attending Anne Frank for the second year and they have been just awful to her. They don’t follow her 504 plan and the grading makes no sense. They don’t provide any information. For instance she in two months she had one item on her progress report for prime and composite numbers but no information. For a month I had been asking for status reports or just any kind of information. What kind of problems is she doing in math. My other children get paperwork that comes home so I have a good understanding. For her nothing and the teacher doesn’t respond to emails. The head of the schools promised I would have feedback on Tuesday but it’s now Saturday and I still have a stack of papers for my other children and nothing for my 5th grader. They don’t care whether your children succeed or fail and are perfectly happy just pushing them through without giving parents any ability to help or even find tutors. It’s so sad because it’s a beautiful campus

We have had an excellent experience at AFIA, and it just keeps getting better. We particularly like the new grading system of standards based learning, which gives our kids numerous opportunities to show what they are learning. AFIA has also excelled at giving families numerous options to learn during the pandemic. This flexibility allows parents to make choices each week as families needs’ change and allows for excellence in learning across the board.

We’ve had a new head of school since July of 2019, and Mr. Johnston has worked hard to bring in excellent staff, return our school to inquiry based learning and communicate with both parents and students. He is an innovative thinker who challenges our students to belong, be great and find joy.

I have two students with learning differences attending this school. They have been nothing but understanding and compassionate towards them. Their techniques are effective in helping them stay on task and complete their work. In addition they follow their IEPs.

The elementary school teachers are always on their phones. The middle school teachers act too afraid to chastise the misbehaving students. I could go on forever about the high school staff... They pretend not to see anything.

Let me answer this with a reference to a recent incident. Two weeks ago, a boy in the high school was "punished" (lightly chastised) for exploding a phone battery, nearly exploding one student's face, and contaminating the air. It's okay, though. They opened a couple doors to air it out.

In addition to the overwhelming amount of food trash laying about the tables and floor, I'd like to note that students at this school are poorly monitored, and have even walked off campus to buy Starbucks. I heavily recommend you do NOT send your child here. Don't settle for Anne Frank Inspire Academy. There are other schools-- BETTER schools-- that will allow your child to belong, be great, and find joy.

Dr E. and Dr Vaughn are great! They are running the school wonderfully; They are actively involved with the kids on a daily basis and immediately addess and concerns and/or problems that arise.

I have a child in Special Ed. and his needs are being met. He also gets additional help when needed, even if it falls outside the scope of his IEP.

At the end of the semester they gave us 2 essays a math project and a page to write about in history. As if they didn't have the time. and not to mention we had one day off and another one due to snow.

We had high hopes for Anne Frank but we're very disappointed with the lack of direction the teachers provided. They did very little actual teaching and expected parents to fill the gap at home with ridiculous amounts of homework. My kids didn't have any free time or time to pursue other hobbies/activities. We withdrew them after 5 physically and emotionally exhausting weeks.

This is an innovative, tech-friendly school. The middle school is run like a high school, stressing self-reliance and independent thinking. It is not the right school for kids who need a lot of structure. But if your student is able to manage his/her time, and
is able to study independently, this is a great school for them!

This school wasn't what I thought it would be. As other reviewers have mentioned, a pretty specific population of children will do well in this school. I don't agree with what one said, that you get what you put into it.

My kids have different personalities, one very motivated and independent and one who needs a little more guidance and tends to get distracted easily. Neither did well at AFIA, despite the hours of homework and tutoring we wound up doing at home. I fully think that education isn't just the realm of the school and that parents should be involved in their children's education, but I could have enrolled them in home-school and gotten the same results! I feel like a lot of parents spend quite a bit of time outside of school hours trying to help their kids be successful or even just scrape by.

A couple of other things that bother me: There is no nurse or counselor on campus and the extracurricular components are pretty minimal. Kids have P.E. every day which I initially thought was great until I realized it was at the expense of Spanish and Art. I also thought it was cool at first that the school offered Spanish, but it is only once a week for about 30 minutes with a weak curriculum (my kids have barely learned anything except their numbers and colors) and Art seems to be pretty sporadic. My kids love doing the group projects that are a big part of the AFIA learning process. However, outside of the group projects, they don't think the core lessons are very engaging or interesting. Based on what I see of their normal assignments, I have to agree.

I almost feel bad writing this review because I think the teachers and head of school put in so much effort and hours. They are very responsive to parent-initiated contact. Unfortunately, a lot of the school material and perhaps the district mandated curriculum is just not up to standard.

There is a high amount of schoolwork made up of quite a bit of busy work for upper elementary (grades 3-5). I also fear my son is behind on foundational skills when he was on grade level when he enrolled at AFIA. I will say the campuses are lovely and the teachers (also known as facilitators) work very hard, but the curriculum itself is not that impressive. I think he'll be returning to Northside next year.

The bond i have here with the teachers is something you cannot get anywhere else.These people are amazing and have been here for me throughout my years not only as a teacher but as a friend. They help you to succeed and never judge you for the things you say or ask.

I am a student here at Anne frank and have been for two years now. I'm currently in the high school (its first year being open) and yes this school has its ups and downs but I love it. I always ask questions because I guess I'm pretty curious about things and have to have things explained to me in person and given examples. At Anne frank that's exactly what you get. The bond I have with the teacher and my friends are something I cherish a lot. The teachers honestly really do care about you and want you to be successful and the group of friends I have is one in a kind. Bullying doesn't occur much here because we all know one another and pretty much are all friends. This school has helped me so much in growing as a person and becoming a young adult. I have grown responsible and have become more independent in a way. I will admit though that if you don't do your work and just slack off with the amount of freedom they give you, you will fail. You have to develop time management skills and literally put school first. some kids say that they don't learn here but honestly if you look at the kids saying that, it's the ones who don't do their work and get in trouble. If you dedicate yourself, ask questions and actually do your work, you'll be successful. This school has really changed my life. Throughout the pros and cons of this school, I really do wish more people knew about this school and have the opportunity to experience it.

This is my son's first 'real school' and he absolutely loves it. He attended a very good private school for pre-k and Kinder so I was afraid of what his first experience in a real world school could be, yet he is very happy and loves every day of school.

This great school is saving me a great deal of money that I was going to pay for private school. Now that money can go to his college fund.

This was one of my main fears as my son came from a Christian private school, and it has not been the case. All students seem to be well mannered and the very few situations that may be unpleasant are kept under control by the staff.

The facilitator gives instructions for learning opportunities but gives your child the freedom to learn without boundaries. The student is expected to come up with an exploration of the subject. Ask questions and present findings.

You get what you give. This school is best for students who come ready to learn and are self directed. If your child needs someone on top of them...not a good fit. Kids have assignments that they have to prioritize and complete without a ton of direction. The school is project based and you will buy a lot of poster board.

My son has attended AFIA since it opened during his 7th grade year. He will be starting his freshman year come August. We absolutely love AFIA! The teachers are great, and since it is such a small campus (135 students total) all the kids know each other & have a real sense of community. My son has flourished at this school. So many opportunities to learn & do exciting things. His 8th grade class just got back from a week in Washington DC. He is in the Junior National Honor Society, and has already passed his high school level algebra class. AFIA is a wonderful learning institution and I hope everyone who wants to get in DOES get in.
