Marvelously Made - the School for Young Children

Marvelously Made has been such a blessing in the lives of my children, as well as our family as a unit. By seeing each child as a complete person at the exact place they are at, the teachers are able to connect with them and support them in their current abilities, meanwhile fostering a love of learning, art, writing and all of the things that come along with it.
The support that the parents receive is unmatched, by working with parents to see the beauty in the work the children are doing and how to foster the same environment at home. The freedom to know that “just reading” and “just talking with” and encouraging a creative spirit at home is exactly what they need to succeed, without the stress of completing homework or meeting a standard that doesn’t exist in the best interest of the child.
My children come home happy, exhausted, and full of possibilities and ideas. I could not be more thankful for the years we have had at this school and am so excited for the years to come.

We felt our child was unsafe.

We enrolled our child in the farmhouse program in January 2022 and shortly withdrew him after about 4 weeks into the program. The issue that led us to withdraw from this school had to do with their inclement weather plan. The weather turned icy and hit below freezing yet the leader of the school (Jennifer McCarville) thought it was perfectly acceptable for the 3-5 yr olds to remain outside for the duration of the morning regardless of temps. The older children were brought inside but preschool remained %100 outdoors. She would not allow the children shelter because they had a mild case of Covid going around the school and she was unable to safely accommodate the class size inside, there were 37 children in the preschool class and their indoor space is just not set up to accommodate for inclement weather days. We thought it would be inhuman to send our child when we ourselves wouldn't be outside in those conditions so that led to us to the decision to remove our child.

They do no have homework and often discuss the benefits of opting out of homework when children move on to public schools.

We have had two children attend Marvelously Made and have experienced both preschool and kindergarten. This school truly is a gem. The way they value children's natural development is unlike anything I've ever seen in any other school setting. True to their name and nature, this school believes that each child is marvelously made and unique. The administration works with each child where he or she is at developmentally, celebrating their individual growth. Additionally, the administration cares for parents and families, and they provide resources for parental growth as well. Not only did my children benefit from attending Marvelously Made, but I am a better parent for having been in this environment as well. The staff at Marvelously Made understands that family time after school is precious and therefore they do not assign homework just for the sake of assigning homework. My daughter has attended both kindergarten and first grade at Marvelously Made. She has had only a handful of take home assignments in those two years, but those that she has had have been worthwhile. My daughter was given guidelines and then encouraged to choose the subject of her home projects so that she was engaged and interested.

The teachers at Marvelously Made don't spoon-feed the children answers. Instead they are there to help foster the children's natural curiosity. They are next to the children, guiding them to explore and question and then learn how to find the answer to those questions through experimentation and observation. The children are unaware that they are learning. They are having fun! But they are doing more than memorizing facts; they are actually learning how to learn.

Children are encouraged to voice their concerns and needs to their peers, and also to listen to what their friends are saying. When a dispute occurs between two students, a lot of times it would be easy enough for the teacher to settle it for them. Marvelously Made teachers do not do that. They stop and listen to each student tell their side of the story in turn. They make sure each child has a chance to say their side without interruption. Then, they help the children come up with ways to right the wrong or share the toy or otherwise solve the issue. Again, the staff is not spoon-feeding the children. They are learning to solve these problems on their own, with guidance.

Another way they help develop compassion and respect is through their treatment of animals and the environment. The school has a lot of animals on the grounds in addition to the lizards, butterflies, frogs, beetles, etc that the children find on their own. The teachers spend a lot of time helping the children understand the needs of each individual creature and how to care for them. The teachers model respect, integrity, and compassion in their treatment of each other, the animals, and the students themselves.

The staff at Marvelously Made regularly hold workshops with parents that are informative and helpful. The teachers are like-minded, work together as a cohesive unit, and just clearly enjoy spending time together. Parents are involved and supportive of each other. The entire community feels like family.

There is no cookie-cutter mold that children have to fit into at Marvelously Made. The staff approaches each child as an individual and discusses each child's individual needs amongst themselves at their meetings. Because of the way the school is set up, the children are allowed to gravitate toward the methods of learning and subjects that interest them most. They are not forced to learn things they are not ready to learn. One problem with many school systems is that the children are skipping over developmental steps in order to keep to a schedule that someone came up with. They do not skip steps here. They allow the student to progress through each step in its natural order.

This goes hand in hand with question 5, about developing integrity, compassion, and respect. The children are not forced to be friends with every student at their school. They are, however, expected to treat every student with kindness. Kindness is talked about, encouraged, and praised. As a result I find the students at Marvelously Made are very sweet to one another overall.

I whole-heartedly recommend this school. It is like a little oasis in our crazy world. Things are simpler here, people are kind, learning is encouraged, and both my children have just blossomed. I truly feel my children were given a huge gift by attending Marvelously Made and I wish every child could experience it.
