To honestly place a review on a school can be difficult due to the fact that there's backlash with speaking up and speaking out. I may not keep my child at this school for the upcoming year because this school has shown a great amount of discrimination, (teachers and students) bullying, and negative Pygmalion practices. Personally a safe is one where teachers work with ALL parents, not just their favorite parents that suck up to teachers and administration and favorite student parents. If you speak up, they literally try to blacklist your child. Teachers that have violated their code of ethics try to make parents with a voice against any of the issues uncomfortable. It is very clique based, which in this case I don't believe all the teachers are this way, but ones that can't think for themselves or use their brains for common sense, follow any story made up by teachers that are no longer allowed to teach there. This school practices favoritism and passive discrimination. They do not address racial incidences unless it's one of their own children involved, but with a staff of 98% Hispanic race, they will be ignorant to other racial issues. The teachers will bully the "scholars" of parents they're not fond of and they will not work closely with those students as they do their favorites, which brings the Pygmalion/Golem teaching a concern. I happen to believe the school is giving out grades to make their school appear to be successful until test time. I have proof of everything I am stating but per guidelines we're not use names of any of the individuals. To change this schools dangerous culture is going to take many voices of parents and staff that aren't afraid to voice these concerns, which there are many parents facing these issues at many Idea academies and college preps. I gave this school 2 years so far and I'm not sure if this is a school issue or district problem but their needs to be some serious cleaning of staff on an administrative and teacher level. I know that there's real teachers out there that love the art of teaching and love children, looking for a job that they'll take seriously and work to keep the school system a safe place for ALL students. Idea Mays is a dangerous school to bring your child until they make these necessary changes. I do want to provide some positive feedback that should be shared. School meals are free and healthy. Please do research. Our children's education and emotional safety needs to be taken seriously.

I enrolled my child believing they would make her would make her excel, only to find out a year later her cousins in a traditional school have caught up to her academically. Turns out her “teachers” aren’t even CERTIFIED by the state and can’t even spell if their lives depended on it. They’re just glorified babysitters who yell a lot and bully students. They claim they prepare students for college, but that is a huge misnomer since anyone can enroll in a junior college. Good riddance!

The teachers my daughter has had at Idea Mayz have been amazing. They have gone above and beyond to keep me informed of any struggles. Feedback from her teachers helped me decide to have her tested for ADHD.

The students are taught a lot about how to treat ach other, and although bullying happens everywhere, I feel my daughter has been taught against it, and has also been taught to empathize with, and help, those around her.

One of my biggest issues with this school is the upper level staff. Leadership here leaves a lot to be desired. The Academy principal was let go mid year with no explanation. The college prep principal took over, but he is ineffective at basic communication with parents. He always says to email him with any problems, but when I did I never received a response. On another occasion my email was forwarded, with no response form him, to someone else to handle.

Students are able to fluidly move through grade levels as their skill level allows. Students are broken into groups that allow the more advanced students to not get held back, and allow the other students to move at a pace that does not leave them behind. The school also offers SPED classes and tutoring to all students.

I have not had any direct issues with bullying at the school, but I have heard from parents who have expressed issues with having bullying addressed.

Overall I like the schools handling of academics and the fluidity of grade levels. Students are not held back or left behind, which makes learning at your own pace easier. Homework is reasonable and valuable.

The school does not have many extra curricular activities, but does have sports and recently added dance to after school care.

My biggest issue is with the lack of good communication with upper leadership.

Idea gives students a reasonable amount of homework that is meant to enforce items learned at school. Teachers are very good at providing homework helpers for parents, and providing clear instructions for students.
