Some may not be aware that this school teaches at two grades above level. If a student is experiencing difficulties, parental communication from the teachers may be limited or non-existent. We mistakenly enrolled our kids without fully understanding the environment. Our oldest child received no materials to take home or study aids, and we had multiple unreturned emails to teachers across both grade levels, 2nd and 7th. In one instance, I emailed a particular teacher four times before receiving a response, and it took two months to receive any response from her; some never responded. For parents seeking consistent communication with the teaching staff and collaborate effectively for their child's benefit, this may prove challenging. Parent-teacher conferences were limited to lunch hours, which is inconvenient for working parents. While the school promotes the idea of students advocating for themselves, this approach should not mean neglecting support from staff or ignoring student progress. If you review the testing stats by subject, you can clearly see this school does not do well, which is not surprising based on personal experience.

We moved our son to this school after our neighborhood school (which is highly rated) was not working out for him. The materials covered in class were not challenging to him. Also the school community wasn't a good fit for us. At Basis NE the school curriculum is rigorous and interesting for my fourth grader who enjoys math, science and reading. At his previous school, they were only reading simple books. At BASIS NE, they are reading interesting novels. The students at BASIS NE, have multiple teachers and move from class to class, more like a typical middle school experience. This takes some getting used to and caused my son some stress at first, but he has gotten accustomed to the schedule. Also, having multiple teachers means different teaching styles and personalities, which has been good. Previously, when he had one teacher all day, his experience was determined basically by that one person, for better or worse. The BASIS NE staff have been supportive and accessible for meetings to discuss my son's progress at school. The staff listen to parent feedback as well. The community is great. People are friendly and there are families from different parts of the city and farther. As a result families are from different backgrounds, culturally and economically. The staff is also diverse. Our family enjoys this so we can have connections with people who are from different backgrounds. We also enjoy that the school offers student clubs and a few sports. There are also different community and student social events which have been fun. The few draw backs at the moment are the higher work output required. Students have homework every day, which is about an hour for my fourth grader. At first, he had a hard time transitioning to the higher work load, but it has become more of a habit now so there is less complaining. Still, after a long day at school, homework is another chore to be done before bed. I find that I have to protect our evenings so we have enough down time. It would be hard to do many other activities. Another downside is that the campus facility is smaller than traditional schools, so the playground is not big or well equipped. Lastly, if you don't live close to the school, you will need to commute, which isn't too bad for us, but still a drawback. Overall, it is a great school if your child would enjoy a more interesting school curriculum.
