My child was injured by a teacher at Jefferson Early Learning Center.

he is able to clearly explain how he was pinched on his shoulder and at his throat. he is 4yo!!!

The principal has refused several requests for a sit down, and the assistant principal promised follow up that just never came.

we have no choice but to trust our babies will be safe at school. The lack of accountability or concern for what happened to my son should be concerning to any parent considering this place.

Many are effective but there are inexperience teachers that seem to have just started their teaching career...could be a good thing but also a bad this.

The mission statement: “We are committed to excellence in all that we do. Jefferson Elementary educates all PK-5th grade scholars for career and college readiness through rigorous lessons and target instruction”. Two problems with that: “educates all” is not true because it is a sink or swim boat and “rigorous lessons and target instruction” is more like saying intimidation and attack to those that are oppose to the lesson being taught in the school. Remember when I mentioned that teacher that told the kids they can end up under the freeway like the bums (and the principal was present and confirmed this)?? Yes, that is what they mean when they say “educates all PK-5th grade scholars” …through fear. If you do not believe me just ask some of the 3rd grade moms last year. In a field trip a teacher told the parents, out loud for the students to hear, that they could be criminals and had to do a background check to be near the students. Parents were outraged but nothing was done. Facts.

If you care about your child, do not send them here. I could count only one or two teachers here that genuinely care about the students, but the administration is terrible when it comes to compassion and assistance especially to parents that are low income. I cannot begin to say how terrible the principal is. The main agenda is to be strict and cold for the benefit of only the school and staff. Her persona is false and rather than be empathetic, she instills intimidation to students and parents. For example, as a punishment in detention, she made a student read an article about a child that can go to jail for a misdemeanor crime. Although this is accurate and common knowledge to adults, this practice does not belong in an elementary school as it brings terror to the minds you are trying to teach. That job is for the parents. Another observation, which was noted by several other parents (this is even confirmed by the principal herself) that a teacher frightened several children in telling them that if they do not do their work, they can end up being bums like you see under the freeway (more along those lines). Amazing how the principal nonchalant sided with the teacher. The district is trying to implement a strong administration/team in the school for the lack of low-test scores and year after year of low performance. Their jobs are in the line and they will do everything to look good even if it means losing ethical standards.

I mentioned the incident of the intimidation of the principal to a district employee, and she made notes of it, but I doubt there will be an investigation. Low performing school always have low performing principals.
Positive light?
There are, like I mentioned, good teachers that I have personally met that have a heart of gold. There are afterschool programs for homework help as well as several activities like the Houston Symphony violin program free to students. There was even an opportunity for catechism classes for kids that want to complete their first communion. The school has some new temporary buildings and the safety looks subpar but overall, I felt students were safe there. The counseling and special ed team is committed to the students and I believe there is some fighting chance in this school with the right involved parent.

In conclusion, I am moving my child to another district.
