I hate this school so much. I keep trying to find the flaws on the online website but I can't find any. If you want to send your child to this school, I recommend asking students with their point of view. The teachers, administration, and principal are extremely two-faced. I've noticed with parents, my administrators always act like this school is "The right school for your child" when they will choose to not mention the black mold, cockroaches, and rats infesting the walls. My teachers constantly hand out homework like I'm not a person outside of school, often making me dedicate at least 2 hours A DAY. I have enough homework to compare to Carnegie Vanguard High School students. My 6th grade year was really fun but the constant change of lesson planning, tests, and curriculum is overwhelming. They started having scripted lessons...This year, tests are a whopping 50% of your grade, so it's not "Meant to challenge you", it's meant to cry over. The stress for students is so bad, they put a suicide lifeline on the back of the ids Last year, 6th grade was stress free, but 7th grade was mentally destroying. 8th grade is less stress free, but your child still gets hours of work and homework. Also, the materials they provide is solely a Chromebook but they have horrible wear and tear. It is clear that there hasn't been a new Chromebook in ages. One of my friend's Chromebook screen can literally pop out, and some of my classmates have cracks on their screen. The uniforms are horrible. The shirts are thick and itchy, and when I show up to school with a skirt that's 4 inches above the knee and not 3, I get dress coded, and when the petite girls with skinny legs show up to school with a skirt so short I can see their undershorts, they just get a high five from the administrators who dress code everyone else. The people who attend this school throw out racial slurs and offensive curse words like there is nothing wrong, and there are constant fights. The teachers are also more bullies than the students. My 7th grade history teacher has a reputation for being hated, she made a kid cry for not having his binder. Honestly I could go on and on about all the bad things about Lanier, so onto the positive things: absolutely nothing. If you want your child to go here, just let them go to 7th grade at a different school.

My student attended this school because of the “academic” ratings and reviews, but if we had to do it again we would totally not pick this school! The administration and staff are horrible. From the rude office ladies to the unavailable principal that sweeps everything under the rug and doesn’t discipline the kids that need to he disciplined. The office staff is not only rude to parents when we walked in, but witnessed them being rude to students for simply asking a question like where to drop off their doctors note. And don’t interrupt while they’re on their phone or you’ll get an ugly eye-roll! My student didn’t want to even go into that front office. Students shouldn’t have to be scared of the school staff or anyone at school! And let’s not forget the mean bully teacher that shouldn’t be teaching 7th grade history. So many complaints about this lady and she’s surprisingly still there! Do your research parents before sending your kids here!

We moved to the Houston area when my kids were in 1st and 3rd grade. We lived in a wealthy suburb with great schools but hated it for our kids. Our kids we exposed to a lot of racism in that suburban school so we moved our kids into the city so they could specifically attend Lanier. We loved the diversity of the school. The staff, faculty and principal are all wonderful. The PTO is very active. The dance program is wonderful and provides a great way for kids to get involved. We are so grateful that our kids could be a part of the Lanier family. I can't say enough good things about the communication that comes from the school and the PTO. Here's just one example of many regarding the principal: Mr. Williams is the most caring and enthusiastic principal I have ever met. He stands at the corner every morning to welcome the kids to school. It's a large middle school but somehow he finds the time to get to know the students. One morning my daughter told him she was afraid to dissect a frog in science class and later that day Mr. Williams showed up at her class to sit with her while she did the dissection.

Let me start by pointing out how they managed to have all google reviews deleted. This alone says ALOT. They literally erased concerned parents and students voices. The school is infested with rats and other rodents. The students get in trouble for eating in class because of this infestation, yet teachers are allowed to eat in front of their hungry students. My child herself has witnessed rats running across the the gym and cafeteria floors. The teachers are more bullies than even the children. My child has come home crying more from being bullied and insulted by teachers rather than students. They pick and choose which students to pick on. I have witnessed certain kids getting dismissed for the same reason my child was sent to the office and given lunch detention for. Stay away from this place!

Lanier is a Vanguard ("gifted and talented") magnet school. As a result, the school's students score relatively well on various standardized tests. This leads to high placement for Lanier in various school ranking systems that put significant weight on these test scores. This, however, has nothing to do with the administration or teaching at the school, which are average overall on a good day.

As at any large school, teaching quality runs the full range: from excellent, to OK, to shockingly bad. The school has had frequently changed principals, with little success at finding the right fit.

The moral of the staff is low. E-mails from students and parents frequently go unanswered (or inappropriately answered). There is apparently no top down leadership in this regard. The current principle seems to go out of his way to be unavailable and seems to make questionable hiring decisions. Teacher communications to parents sometimes refer indirectly (or directly), to a lack of administrative support.

The physical school structure is very poor. It reeks of mold and the like, and perhaps some of the low moral of the occupants can be attributed to "sick building syndrome." If any building truly qualifies for this diagnosis, it is Lanier Middle School.

Drop off and pick-up of students is pure chaos. There are way too many cars in a relatively small area, and it is just a matter of time until a student is seriously injured or killed.

The main advantage to the school is that, because many students come from homes that value and support education, the learning environment is better than most alternatives, and there are less serious discipline problems. It is on this basis, and the absence of better alternatives in HISD, that I give the school 2 stars and a recommendation Again, this upside has little or nothing to do with administrators or teachers or HISD.

I am a student at Lanier and I am not happy at all with my experience throughout the last three years. In 6th grade they give you soo much homework and the lessons aren't very engaging at all. The teachers just tell you something that you are supposed to learn, but they just give you a packet of work to read by your self. The teaching really depends on which teachers you get. Most teachers are very mean and un-interactive with students, causing many students to either get bad grades or even end up failing. I am a very good student and I keep up with as much as I can but It's very difficult to learn something important and really understand what that learning means, when a teacher doesn't even teach you well enough to understand it. The amount of bullying that happens at this school is insane. Kids are running around the school everyday slinging slurs of all kinds, and saying the most diabolical and rude things you could ever think of. When I think of Lanier, I think of a school with poor teachers who can't even keep a classroom quiet or an administrative branch that doesn't deal with students as correctly as they were taught to. 8th grade has so far been atrocious, there have been several kids who have gotten suspended for both crazy, and unreasonable things. One kid got suspended for vaping in a school bathroom. On the HISD discipline papers it very clearly states that vaping is not a suspend-able offense to the school, but it is an immediate transfer to the DAEP. I myself almost got suspended from playing the Soviet union anthem. The Soviet union anthem is not a suspend-able offense, nor should it be threatening to another student. I don't care if you are Jewish, and you feel uncomfortable, it is not something that you should report somebody for. Instead of that you should use it as an opportunity to learn the history of the very unfortunate events that happened in History. Just to say one more time, I would not recommend you to send your kid to this school if you want your student to come home and bring back happy news. This school however, does have very high potential, but I don't see this old crippled building making it more than 5 more years without completely breaking. The school is quite literally falling apart and is a pain in the butt to fix everytime that it breaks. The AC goes out at least once or twice a month, and there are cracks, leaks, and bugs of all kinds that just roam the school that children should be dwelling with knowledge in. ENDD

I’m graduating Lanier on the 5th. I would say my experience is mediocre. I learned a lot, but we were taught for the STAAR rather than to learn. Teachers were average. There are good and bad ones. The good ones are really good and the bad ones are really bad. I didn’t have a lot of support when it came to social-emotional situations. My mental health was really bad my time here and all the counselor told me was to get my grades up (I have an A-minus average). Kids are okay. It’s diverse, but discrimination still occurs and is often joked about. The safety is in the gutter. There’s mold everywhere and the building is really old. The engagement is good though. I don’t recommend Lanier. Good academics, but bad school.

I am just finishing up my time at Lanier, as you can say I am int the final stretch and I go to highschool next year and I have a lot to say about my 3 years at this school, the building is absolutely disgusting, its old very old, there is horrible smells coming from anywhere in the school, like someone just died.
There is mold everywhere in the school, and constant leaks of some type of liquid in the ceiling, the cafeteria food has bugs in it and the the football field isn't even regulated to have home games on it, poison ivy on the fences outside, the education at this school is questionable, coming from a an actual student, all we did in class was the teachers just getting some type of worksheet of Google and just handing to us, day after day after day. and the school building isn't even big enough to house all the students without being cramped in, it feels like your in a little hut oh and I forgot to add the AC doesn't work in 99% of rooms in the school. The school also doesn't have much freedom at all, the only time you can really go outside is during lunch when you eat which is only for 30 mins, like imagine sitting inside all day, how bad would the be for your mental and physical health. What are some positives you may ask, well if your children are artistic they have some decent programs for that, especially Mr Garret, which was my favorite teacher at my three years at this school. Personally I really wouldn't recommend this school for your children

In 6th grade, homework is easy and not a burden on the students, but in 7th grade, many of my friends had mental breakdowns over all the math (and other) homework they were getting and how much their grades were dropping. And then there is 8th grade, which is very fun and not very stressful, aside from STAAR testing month. I think the 8th grader's parents are more involved when the three years at the school have passed, and they try to make the Great 8 graduation, dance, and other end-of-year shenanigans very exciting.

I have a ton of great experiences with teachers at Lanier, and these great experiences definitely outweigh the bad ones. Some teachers don't know when to stop assigning hours of homework, but they usually make up for it with their wonderful teaching styles and personalities. Other teachers are kind and like to connect with students using a snappy, modern way of humor, much like what most middle schoolers use at this point in their lives.

The leadership at Lanier is surprisingly great, and smooth running. There are 8th-grade student leaders (who go through a week of training camp), and of course, the adult administrators, and everything runs smoothly with a few rebellious kids here and there.

At Lanier, everyone has their little groups and everyone stays in those groups throughout the year, with a few kids straying away and making new friends throughout the years. Of course, there are a few troublemaking kids, performing harmless but serious acts such as making a toilet seat in one of the bathrooms disappear, or getting friends to shave their head in the bathrooms for attention, but deserving action is taken, and most of the time, these kids are caught due to social media platforms.

Kids with learning differences are accepted by the students (as far as I know), and everybody is encouraged to be kind, and say, talk to people that they see are sitting alone at lunch. These kids usually end up finding a group of friends with shared interests and/or shared differences and make friends they will remember for a lifetime.

I have not been exposed to bullying at this school, so I do not have much to say about it. I think since over 1.5 of my 3 years at Lanier were during the COVID-19 outbreak, I have limited knowledge of kids being cruel to one another at school.

All in all, I will be very sad to graduate from Lanier Middle School this June, but I welcome Kinder HSPVA High School for the Performing and Visual Arts with open arms. <3

Some homework but not too much. Standard.

Posted: May 6, 2020

On the positive side: they were highly responsive to email questions and were always friendly. On the negative side: The classes are taught as "block schedules" which means that not every class met every day and when a class met it met for 75 minutes. Sounds good, right? Wrong. The teacher would instruct the students for perhaps 30 minutes or so and then allow students to work on their own for the rest of the period. This meant that nearly all students were on their smartphones for the majority of the 75-minute class. Smartphones were not just allowed at Lanier, but students were ENCOURAGED to bring them to school because so much material is online in google classroom and the school/district cannot afford to distribute laptops. If a school/district cannot afford to distribute laptops, they therefore need to distribute old-school textbooks. You can't have it both ways. Irresponsible. I don't blame the teachers, though since they are stuck. No textbooks + no laptops/I-pads, etc. = asking students to bring smartphones into classroom. Shameful. The orchestra program, on the other hand, is absolutely wonderful. Ms. Cole is incredible!

Very much depends on the group of friends your child falls in with. My child was of a specific minority group and fortunately fell in with them who were all high achieving kids. So it turned out well.

Posted: May 6, 2020

Some minor interaction with lower-level administrators and it was always positive. Only interaction we ever had with upper administrators was watching the principal direct traffic in the afternoons after school. He did a good job, though. And they always seemed friendly and accommodating.

Lanier is like a cruise ship. You can pretty much find anything going on there at any time and it is what you make of it. This is good prep for Bellaire or Lamar though Lanier doesn't have as many gun shootings as the high schools. I guess that's a positive these days.

They do indeed teach effectively but for the wrong reason. You’re given information that’s shoved down your throat and then thrown up on the test. So if you want to be taught how to remember things and not actually learn them, this is the perfect school for you.

Posted: December 27, 2018

This school is more worried about test scores and what uniform you’re wearing than how your behavior is shown.

Posted: December 27, 2018

The leadership here really doesn’t make much of a difference in how the school functions.

Posted: December 27, 2018

This school teaches every student the same thing the same way. It’s difficult for some students to learn in this environment.

Posted: December 27, 2018

To be honest this is about the only actual positive thing about this school. Bullying is almost nonexistent but when it happens it’s well taken care of.

Posted: December 27, 2018

If I had to rate it, I’d rate it a 3.5 out of 10. If I were to come here to learn how to take notes, remember answers on a test, and get good grades and not actually learn the material then it’d be an absolute 10 but I’m more interested in learning. This school and also most of HISD doesn’t understand that there is a LARGE difference in those who are smart and people who score better.

All they do is give us projects and homework that will not help us in the future. But because most schools do this anyway, (I know because I have moved to 6 different places so far and been part of may school districts), I give it a neutral rating.

Posted: March 10, 2018

Some are good, some are terrible. This school is just like any other school, it is nothing special.

Posted: March 10, 2018

We have to learn about different IB characteristics in ATL, (a class at the end of the day.) We have award ceremonies to congratulate students on their character. However, many students fall asleep during the courses and the teachers are not strict about developing these characteristics in youth.

Posted: March 10, 2018

Although they have a leadership program and have leadership courses, not everyone has access to them. Most of the so-called "leaders" in the school, (eighth graders who tried out in seventh grade and are able to teach GSG), are terrible, obnoxious people.

Posted: March 10, 2018

Posted: March 10, 2018

They have a few classes where they discuss bullying, however, they are not on the watch for it. The office people are lazy and do not care about who is bullied and who is not bullied. I see lots of kids getting bullied, every day, everywhere. The use of profanity is common, and this is so far the worst school I have ever seen when it comes down to bullying.

Posted: March 10, 2018

It was ok, but it could have better. I think all the problems in this school is not necessarily the school's fault, but the district's fault. HISD only cares about the student's grades, and not about teaching them the true meaning of learning. Although this may be rated one of the top schools in Texas, it is certainly not the best. From my own experience, I think I have learned more from my run-down, not-as-wealthy school in New Jersey rather than this one. I feel as if this system is highly corrupt, which is why I do not rate it 5 stars.

The best thing about this school is the the 8th graders can become leaders and i am one of them too. I was very nervous at first but you can volonteer to inprove your leadership skills.

Posted: May 26, 2017

They do spend a lot of time talking about it in class. My child was not bullied, nor did she report observing anyone being bullied.

Posted: May 26, 2017

There is a 30 minute study lab at the end of the day. With the exception of major projects, my child was able to get most of her homework done at school.

Posted: May 26, 2017

Even the worst teacher my student had at Lanier was better than most of the teachers she had at her other middle school. There are many outstanding teachers here, and the math and science departments are great.

Posted: May 26, 2017

This is an IB program, so they focus on developing the students as effective members of society, not just warm bodies who can regurgitate STAAR worksheet questions onto the test.

Posted: May 26, 2017

For a change, I did not have to make many contacts with administrators. The one thing my child did require was a schedule change, and that was handled smoothly and she was put in the appropriate class. However, there were a few hiccups with field trips that may or may not have been HISD central administration's fault.

Posted: May 26, 2017

My student is GT identified (LMS has a high GT population), and she was able to take a math class 2 years above grade level, as well as take other high school credit courses. I can't speak to other learning differences.

Posted: May 26, 2017

My student loved it. Our zoned school was terrible, and after trying another magnet, which really didn't work for us, she got a seat at Lanier. She had an amazing year and she is looking forward to going to a top magnet high school with many Lanier friends.

My math teachers were unable to guide me in the right direction to become better at math. Many teachers were very rude at times and scary to approach. There were many goof teachers too.

Posted: February 3, 2016

At times it was ridiculous the amount of work we got. It was not busy work so that was really good. But the amount of homework that would pile up from so many classes could be suffocating.

I am a student at this school and one word to describe it. Horrible.
1. the admin are very slack and ignore you. I stand there waiting for someoneto help me and they are right there making copies and ignoring me. I try to get their attention but they ignore me.
2. Some but not all teachers are horrible. So horrible I could OMG them badly. 5 out of 32 teachers I know are actually nice and well… a good teacher. i had a teacher that forced our class to buy flair pens. Those are super expensive for what you get.
3. They say that if you walk in the hall without a signature signed planner by the teacher, u get in trouble. I agree with that rule, but if you come from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor for a teacher errand,(remember, no planner) and to send students back all the way back by the admin, that’s crazy.
4. GSG. Okay, so GSG is Guidance and Support group. It’s basically like homeroom, but thirty minutes and IB activities. I admit, the games are pretty okay, but forcing kids to not do some homework in GSG? You could fail a grade with missing assignments.
5. The school is very judgmental. the students and the students and admin. This is 2015, so I know when I say so. This is first person point of view. The students are racist. they are mean, and are bullies. It’s not like I’m a wimp, but if you ask any student in the school that has been there for at least 5 months to name at least 3 infamous bullies they know, I assure you, they know. The admin and faculty tend to blame children for many things even if the is the student’s fault. It’s like they rub it into kids’ faces.
6. Though this school has many bad things, it has good qualities:
- SOME teachers
- Good curriculum
- very hard, not challenging, but hard——————?
- if you have a good taste in friends, you will find the best friend
7.I would not recommend this school to any students who are innocent and fragile. I have seen the inside of this school. I have seen good students get influenced BADLY. Even me. I’d say I’m not innocent. I’ve seen and heard way took much to be innocent. You don’t need to read this sentence over again, but I have seen couples making out on stair wells.
8. Please don’t let your child be ruined by this school. If you think your child can be tuff, then let them try, but this is a warning from my opinion and is biased. See what your child can do.

I'm not sure why there's so many bad reviews here. Maybe a new principal got in and fired everyone. Or maybe the negative reviewers confused this place with some place in Iraq or Pershing. Actually, this is definitely the best school in Houston or maybe a close second to St. John's depending on your priorities. No, most teachers aren't uncaring, and the GSG thing is something most other schools should learn from. No, very few people are racist or judge you for being poor (very few people do that anyway) Actually, most people are really supportive and care about you Yes, there are many kids who don't want to be there and are just screwing around but that's true in every public school, and most private schools. Many of the people here are really smart and go on to really selective high schools and colleges And why should the school be shut down? The building has peeling paint, but tons of schools do (some older ones in New England take pride in it) I'm really glad I picked this place instead of T.H. Rogers

Alright, yes, Lanier isn't a PERFECT school, but it is definitely an amazing one (yes, I am a former student at Lanier (and I'm moving on to Bellaire HS)). My teachers throughout the years have been kind and very good at teaching (besides my 6th grade science teacher and 7th grade math teacher (who I think taught elementary school before he taught 7th grade), and the administration is very helpful with any problems you have (schedule issues, bullying (if any), etc.). There are also foreign languages that challenge the students as much as their core classes do, and electives that are very enjoyable. Now, you may be wondering why I gave this school 4 stars when this looks like a 5-star review. Well, to be honest, I feel a little bad for the students at Lanier now because they are doing some changes (for example, merging vanguard and non-vanguard students into the same cluster). It feels a little pointless and that's what made me remove the 5th star. In conclusion, I recommend this school for any student who wants to be challenged in the Vanguard program, or any future middle-schooler who wants to be challenged in general. Go Purple Pups!

I agree with many of the reviews. Lanier is not for everyone. This is an excellent public school for G/T kids in a large, public school district. No school gets everything right all the time, but if you are evaluating middle schools, I would encourage you to tour Lanier. There is no hard-sell, and I don't think anyone affiliated with the school would encourage you to choose Lanier if it isn't the right choice for your student(s). Our family has been able to appreciate the overwhelming balance of positives at Lanier: diversity, evenly-enforced disciplinary policy, professional leadership, differentiated instruction in an IB framework (this alone has been invaluable), and a wonderful community of students, parents, administrators and teachers. Are there teachers that could improve? Yes. But if you can cite a school that rates an all-star staff by all their students, I would say that you have found Utopia. If your kids are interested in challenging themselves in any number of areas, I think Lanier may be a really terrific option for them.

I am a student at Lanier and I recognize due to the fact that I am not white my voice probably means nothing but I just don't care anymore. The teachers are terrible and dont teach the only way to get good grades for high school is by knowing the information prior to entering the school. It really hurts to see really smart kids failing because the teachers can't teach at all.I have been called many racial slurs by students in Lanier and when you report to administration they completely ignore u.There is no academic rigor only academic stupidity. After going to Lanier I have become a little racist and an egotistical idiot.I have all A's and im in the Vanguard program, trust me it isnt a a challenge (Ib algebra).Pup Pride is really white pride.I hate this school and cant wait to leave.

I would advise any parents with talented kids NOT send them to this school. The principle is very unprofessional and teachers are very self-centered. Their stupidity will easily ruin your talented kids.

I would not at all recommend this school to anyone. My child is gifted artistically and excels in a particular artistic talent, but that was not encouraged at all at this school or the director of the program. The 6th grade Science teacher did nothing but taunt and berate my child, who did need help academically. The principal was standoffish and rude when I tried to speak to her about issues he was having. I felt very alone and isolated a not so traditional family, even though this school is in the middle of Montrose, one of the most diverse, supposed open minded communities in Houston. I was so happy to get my child out of this school...

Lanier has been a fabulous school for my 8th grader. We have seen her 'grow up' here and develop skills, intellect and confidence. It may not be suited to every child. For kids who are motivated and bright this is a great school. The best things is that each teacher has an individual style which they are free to express. Teachers here have low turnover and like to stay because they are allowed by the administration to bring their own persona to the teaching. This is great for the students who get to interact with valued and respected teachers.

children to spread lies about other children and taunt students who partake in an incident which got them in trouble with a non minority and let the non minority get off scott free. They state that they have a 0 tolerance for hate and that is true if you and your child were born full-blown white. If not-will be overly punished to make an example of and taunted on top of it by the administration. This is not a school that I would recommend to any student who is not white and who does not kiss up to the administration. They do not create a safe environment for all students nor protect them and encourage all teachers, faculty and students to promote peace instead of hate. I give this school 5 thumbs down if you are concerned about and fair, and safe learning environment. There are lots of other middle schools who actually care about the well being of all of their students and this is not one of them.

I am a recent grad from Lanier Middle School and I am currently attending Debakey HSHP. My time at Lanier was a wonderful experience, meeting great people and having awesome teachers. It really prepared me for the hardships of high school and my transition from Lanier to Debakey was almost effortless! The leadership program is great, and will help your child in the course of his/her life. Go purple pups!!

I'm a parent of my student, and after what my students gained from this school. I would recommend to any active, motivated, and bright students to join this school to build a very strong knowledge for his future.

My daughter will be leaving Lanier this year, she is in 8th grade, and I must say it has been a great ride. The curriculum is rigorous and there are such great extra curricular activities to keep the students motivated to do well. I feel Lanier has prepared my daughter for many years ahead of studying, discipline and hard work necessary in High School and College. There were late nights, tears and exhaustion but now my daughter is breezing by in knowing what kind of work to deliver, expextations to meet and responsibilities to fulfill. We were lucky to be accepted into the program!
