Fabulous school with highly experienced teachers led by a great principal. It’s a rare school where joy of learning comes before anything else. Diversity of student population could be better but it’s a factor of zoning boundaries (which is a whole different ball game!). The GT program is delivered within the classroom rather than pull-out which I prefer. The parent body is highly active and involved- their garden classes and library supported by the Parents and PTA are my kids favourite!

I have two kids at Travis and we've had an amazing public school experience. The school is just top notch in everything they do. The principle is a class act and I feel like the teachers are happy to be there! One of my children is in the special education program with dyslexia and he gets great support during his daily sessions. Couldn't recommend the school enough. Truly a HISD gem.

Our kids are new to Travis, but after just one year, we’ve had a wonderful experience. Communication with the teachers has been clear and responsive, and parent engagement is truly outstanding. The school hosts many events that help build a strong sense of community, like the Fall Festival and the family campouts. The PTA is well organized and welcoming, and our kids feel a real sense of pride in being part of the Travis community.

The principal and the parents are extremely involved making it truly a magical environment for those who attend. The community events, the volunteers, the special performances in special clubs like chess and fine arts theater have really added an extra layer of wonderful influence to my children’s lives. We have had some amazing heaters but have had a couple that we have been OK with. Maybe that’s the same at every school. But love that our children are in a nurturing and healthy and positive environment of school

My child is going into third grade and we couldn't be happier. Little sibling will be joining him next year. Even with a pandemic year, the magic and joy of this school rang high as the Principal, teachers and community rallied to keep spirits alive and volunteers on campus when possible. My son STILL loves going to school each day. We feel so lucky to attend this gem of a school and community!

I went to this school till 5th grade, and it was definetly not as good as they say. They gave us no homework, so there was basically no preporation for middle school. When I started middle school I was not used to homework and it was so stressful. I was constanly bullied, and nothing was done about it. Most of the teachers are nice, but some of them are VERY rude. I would not reccomend this school to anyone.

We loved our time at Travis! The emphasis on the arts with the lunch performances they had, the super active PTA, the multitude of opportunities for parents and grandparents to attend functions, shows, and support the school. I can only say amazing things about Travis! We love this school!

All homework is optional and does not contribute to grades. So it's practice if you need it but does not penalize you!

Exceeded my wildest expectations. We were on the fence of private schools, but I can't being happier with a private school than with Travis!

Best experience we've had so far. They are like a family of teachers and have even shown up to my child's birthday party on the weekend. Above and beyond in terms of their commitment.

What a wonderful school! Administration is responsive and open to new ideas. Teachers work to meet multiple learning styles. There's a garden program where students grow their own veggies, a beautiful new outdoor kitchen, a science lab, and so many extras: PE and creative movement, a well-stocked library, character development lessons, art and technology classes, a Spanish curriculum, and an active PTA and school community. We couldn't be more pleased to have our children attend Travis!

This school has had some excellent principals and the teachers are often great. The after school program is poorly managed and over-priced though.

Having come from the near by Feild Elementry we couldn't wait for our daughter to start at Travis. The staff is amazing, we moved to the hights specifically so she could attend Travis. It was the best thing we could have done. All around its an amazing environment. And I will say, her teacher Kathrine Stremple, has and continues to go above and beyond. We are SO greatful for her. I would recommend this school to anyone and everyone! Go Travis tigers!

This is a fantastic place for kids to learn across the board. A very visible and effective administration that is very approachable. Teachers that absolutely work their tails off for the kids. A parent community that takes its responsibility very seriously and works hard to make Travis a great place to learn for all of the kids. The campus is beautiful and they have one of the best gardens of any school in the city.

Our daughter entered 2nd grade, new to Travis (after living in another state). We researched the school and had high expectations. Travis has met those expectations. Second grade teacher Mrs. Weaver is amazing. She is engaged, focused, organized, and a terrific motivator. The principal, Ms. Walker, likewise seems focused and engaged with the students, parents, and program. I don't know about this "two tiered" system. The fact is, our child has been receiving a solid education throughout the year. She has homework every week, and good projects. Meanwhile, the school itself is beautiful, with a restored historic building combined with a new addition. Each class has a garden. There is a great "Spark Park." Parents are engaged and supportive. There are also strong after-school options for the children. All in all, we feel lucky that our child has attended Travis and can recommend it unconditionally.

Travis is an awesome place that has nurtured and cared for our son. I am disturbed by some of the other parent reviews, as I have certainly never experienced the "two school" issue. We are magnet transfers to Travis and put much thought, consideration, and prayer into our decision about where to put our son in school. Travis has exceeded our expectations.

Very average scores for awhile now, despite a vanguard program. Is it the teachers, cirriculum ? ROE, Oak Forest score higher, test much better all around for all students. Parental involvement is good at Travis, lots of spirit, really nice families; some teachers are excellent others are. not.

It is shocking and disturbing how 2 schools are operating under one roof. The Vanguard Program looks very much like a "private" school, receiving opportunities to participate in extra field trips, be mentors for younger grades, participate in academic and dramatic district-wide contests, while the regular classrooms are neglected. The teachers at this school are wonderful but the system here is extremely dysfunctional. The dysfunction carries over to the students by about the third grade, when they begin realizing the differences in the two programs. Animosity builds and the entire culture is affected in a very negative way.
