I am extremely disappointed with this school and the lack of support and communication provided to families.
Throughout the entire time my son was enrolled, I had no clear understanding of what he was learning. There was no consistent platform, newsletter, or communication from the teacher to keep parents informed. Additionally, there was little to no homework sent home, which made it impossible for me to stay involved in my child’s education.
I enrolled my son early in the summer, expecting a smooth start to the school year. However, when August arrived, he did not even have an assigned teacher. Shortly after, I received a letter informing me that the teacher assigned to him was not certified. This was extremely concerning and unacceptable.
More importantly, I requested an IEP evaluation on the very first day of school due to my son’s needs. Despite this, the entire first semester passed without any evaluation being completed. Instead of following proper procedures, the school unilaterally decided to move forward with a 504 plan. It felt like this decision was made to avoid accountability rather than to meet my child’s educational needs.
As a parent, I expect transparency, timely communication, and compliance with educational laws. Unfortunately, this school failed in all of these areas.
Because of these ongoing issues, I made the difficult decision to transfer my son to another school after the first semester. My child deserves better support, and no parent should have to fight this hard for basic services and communication.

School left my son who is in prek4 sitting in urine soaked underwear. The school does not care about children what so ever. How can you as educators completely disregard children and their dignity.

This school is absolute garbage if you can avoid sending your kids especially (special needs) that are still waiting on evaluations they will make you wait months on end to get it done. Even when you tell them what your child needs they instantly become a PROBLEM. When you explain your child’s needs and emotions they want to get an attitude and be rude to you. Not even a full month into school and I will be unenrolling my child due to their negligence in their understanding of what my child needs.

I am a parent of a child with special needs, and my first encounter with the staff was marked by threats. There is a consistent lack of IEP support and follow-through: goals and accommodations written into the plan are frequently ignored or not implemented. Communication from staff and administration is poor — responses are slow or nonexistent when I raise concerns about my child’s progress or safety. Multiple staff members tend to escalate situations rather than de-escalate; my child has been quickly restrained instead of being offered planned calming strategies, and little to no alternative supports (sensory breaks, trained aides, behavior plans) were provided. These practices left my child feeling unsafe and caused undue distress for our family. I raised these issues with the school but saw no meaningful change. If your child has an IEP or significant needs, insist on documented implementation, regular meetings, trained staff, and clear de-escalation protocols before enrolling. I hope the school takes these concerns seriously and makes urgent improvements.

I have three children at Montague, and this is our first experience within the Texas school system. The teachers are definitely the highlight of the school. Each one of my kids’ teachers has been warm, caring, and attuned to their skill level and development. They’ve learned a lot each year, and are performing well on standardized tests. I love that the school recognizes good character in the children too, and celebrates different “Longhorn Leaders” every month.

My only complaint is about the process to get special services. One of my children needed an IEP for speech and is being evaluated for GT services. Both processes have been dragging on past what seems reasonable, fair, or even legal to a student that needs extra support— with little communication from the coordinators. If there was more transparency and expediency within the school and/or district, I’d give the school 5/5 stars.

This school is horrible. Full of bullying kids and staff. My son was choked on the playground they did nothing. My daughter is behind and has education special needs and they did nothing to help. They are extremely understaffed and have no care for the children. There are court cases ongoing for special needs and education. Killeen independent school district in whole is HORRIBLE

We have lived in 6 different states and we were excited when we learned we were coming to Texas because the school system is supposed to be so good. I have worked in all 6 other school districts and never in my life have I been to a school where it feels that the children are treated as a paycheck or a way to get funding, instead of as an individual. For one, outside time and recess is not only the lowest in the district, but when asked about it, the response is that they use more time for academics. That is strange because exercise and outside time is just as beneficial to a child's learning as structured school time. Not only that, it helps increase a child's ability to pay attention and their overall performance in school. Second, children whose parents volunteer in their classroom tend to preform 60% better and graduate with higher grades than students whose don't. Montague makes it near impossible for any parental involvement whatsoever. If you DO get to volunteer, it won't be anywhere near your child or their classroom. Third, the way some of these teachers speak to these children when they do get the occasional outside time, is completely alarming. As a parent who can hear these things from my yard, I am appalled to hear how some of these things are handled and have even heard the word stupid used on occasion. Last year, a teacher poured a glass of water on a young child who fell asleep. Another teacher posted on social media about how it was the worst class she ever had, not realizing class parents could see. There are also issues of extreme bullying that are never handled by the school appropriately. They choose to ignore, rather than acknowledge. More parents have opted for inner district transfers from this school, than ANY other in KISD. That alone should say something. I would never ever recommend this school to anyone and seriously wish that other parents were brave enough to post their own experiences with the school so that maybe just maybe the district would take a deeper look at what in the world is happening there and why morale is SO low.

Overall experience
If I could give this school a 0-star rating I would in a heart beat. We moved to Ft Hood at the end of the year and placed our children in the school before Christmas vacation. Once students returned, my oldest child started slipping academically. She went from straight As to almost failing. Both my kids who absolutely love and adore school became agitated and upset at almost every morning drop-off. Both teacher and principal blamed my child for her lack of academic ability but never once faced the tunes of it possibly being part of the teachers fault. Low and behold the truth started to appear. My child was essentially put in a sink or swim situation. She had to figure things out on her own accord. Failing grades were considered her ‘new normal’ by her teacher, which as parents we rightfully and respectfully disagreed. I urged extra assignments for practice at home- none. I asked for help- none. I asked for homework- none. I brought to the attention of the teacher that I would be finding a tutor and she told me I was in the wrong for doing that because it was ‘too much for my child’, yet she accepted 50-60s as ‘okay’ grades and she ‘wasn’t worried’ about my child passing the grade level. I ended up buying a homeschooling curriculum and every night I would practice with my child and go over the problem areas. I put in transfers to have my children removed from the school 3wks into them starting, which is a massive problem. Montague took a huge emotional and academic toll on my oldest. She was depressed, anxious, felt like a failure. She would routinely say she was dumb. What even makes a 8yr old say that is besides me. Homework is frowned upon. There is absolutely no at home accountability in reading, spelling, or math facts. Let’s not even mention bullying. There is no proper recourse or proactive handling. They expect parents to reach out to the other parents to handle situations. Students are expected to ‘deal with it’. The current principal is an absolute joke. In her exact words: ‘I have 4 kids attending this school and this is the first time this school year (in January of 2020) that I have heard about bullying occurring.’ Yeah, okay. There is no PTO, clubs, or yearbook. Thankfully my kids were able to transfer and my oldest is back to making As, doing well, and loving school. My children will NEVER step foot on this campus again.

We have been with Montague for over three years now. I have two older children who started there who are now in middle school and another who started there in Pre-K 4. Overall the teachers have been excellent. My oldest struggled with reading when we first came but the teacher he had really helped with that now my child has all A's and B's. I will say that if your child has an issue they don't reach out to a parent early on. Also with this new principal it seems as if she doesn't want any parent involvement at the school. My children love when I can take the time out of my day to come eat lunch with them or join their class parties. Youth are at school five days a week for eight hours a day. How do you expect to have parent involvement if you shut parents out?

My middle child is very smart but hated his previous school (preK-1st). When arriving to Montague I talked to the counselor and his teacher to explain what issues he had with his previous school and strived to make school a positive thing for him. He is now in 3rd grade and excelling. He is now a social and happy kid at school. I will be very sad to leave in a few years...but at least now my kid knows that school can be fun and educational. I can't thank them enough.

My daughter started prek 4 last year (2015-2016) and now she is currently enrolled in Kindergarten this year. Last year she had Mrs. Jackson as her teacher and I must say that I absolutely loved her, the communication was alesys great and my daughter was learning so much. My daughter Went to school happy every morning and she always spoke great things of Mrs Jackson. Mrs Jackson was always available for any conferences that I requested and she always responded quickly to any emails or any text messages that I sent her by the texting system that the school has in place. Not all teachers use this texting system but it is there for easy comminication to those teachers willing to use it. Overall, I am very pleased with this school. This year my child started Kindergarten and her teacher is great so far. She comes home super happy ever since school started 3 weeks ago. We will miss this school when we move in a few months.

The whole school is invested in our children and take pride in their accomplishments. All of their students are military so they are accustomed to everything that makes military kids unique and can help them through more than someone without that experience.

Teacher are caring and push all the students to succeed. They not only praise for great work, they praise the struggling student who shows effort.

Of all the elementary schools my kids have gone to, Montague is by far the best school. We have since moved and our kids are in a "public" school with no military relation and I wish it was like Montague. The teachers are amazing and really care about their students! If there is even the slightest thought of bullying, they are on top of it. The kids have a better attitude than other schools. My kids have had Ms. Sweet, Ms. Sebesta, Ms. Dibble (Richardson), Ms. Beaumont and Ms. Manch. I don't have a single complaint about any of them! You truly don't know what you have until its gone. The principal and assistant principal are great! Mr. Sebesta, the gym teacher is great, the special ed teachers Ms. Lewis and Ms. Justice are amazing and do a great job of pumping up the students and making them feel great about themselves! My kids have only great things to say about montague! They don't like their new school at all and it makes me feel terrible.
