My child is has been looking forward to the magnet program at school. The counselors and subject department do a great job of supporting each student's needs. For instance, when our child's assigned math teacher went on maternity leave, the class struggled with substitutes and a lack of structure. We worked with the administration to address the issue, and they assigned the head of the math department to oversee the 7th-grade class. Our child now has an amazing math teacher who has made a huge difference. Having a positive 6th-grade experience made the transition to middle school smooth, and we're excited to see what 8th grade brings.

There is some good and dedicated teachers but a lot of poor performing teachers. My oldest was getting bully and administration did nothing and my youngest was spec ED and in the ARD meeting my child's academic performances did not match up what the teacher was telling me, my child did have any improvement in fact my child most time was play on the computer or do sit around. I spoke with principle and vice principle they both did nothing and brush me off with the issues I address to them. I already took my kids out as soon as possible, when my youngest kid was scared to go back to school after seeing a student kid got restraint from a teacher.

Hobby was a surprisingly wonderful experience for my son. The teachers went above and beyond to work with his IEP. They teach effectively and truly care about the kids. The school expects their students to behave and so they do for the most part. Thank you Hobby!

My four children have all attended Hobby Middle School and we have been very pleased throughout their time at the school. They were well prepared for the rigorous program at Clark High School. I heard concern from some parents when the school began offering free lunch to all students in 2018, as if that was a negative indicator for the school. I think putting all students on an equal footing in that regard is a plus. Middle school is a developmental stage with challenges for all kids. Given the age, students may bring home stories that will sound scary to first-time middle school parents. That happens in private schools as well, so it shouldn't be a negative about a particular school. I think the Hobby administrators and teachers do a great job guiding middle school kids. Hobby is a diverse school, with kids from varying backgrounds and socioeconomic status. I think the diversity is a big plus at Hobby, especially for students who attended a less diverse elementary school. High achieving students will be challenged in the pre-AP classes and the GT teachers are great as well. The music program is very strong with Mr. Weber providing excellent long- time leadership for the band and Mr. Romero, a newer orchestra teacher who is young and energetic. The coaches in the athletics program really care about the student athletes and teach good sportsmanship and teamwork as well as athletic skills. I highly recommend Hobby Middle School.

Homework increases as the students get older, so 8th graders do more than 6th graders. This helps prepare them for high school expectations, but the load is reasonable. Projects are assigned with plenty of lead time.

Teachers all provide time for students to come in for extra help if needed, often offering both before and after school options. The mid-day Flex time allows students to get help during the school day, which is helpful for parents who can't provide early/late day transportation for their kids. Teachers communicate well with both students and parents through the Remind system. Expect to enter many Remind codes at meet-the-teacher night.

I believe character development is one of the greatest strengths of the program at Hobby Middle School. It is an area of focus for administrators, teachers and coaches. Mr. Carranco often talks about Positive Purple Power and it is reflected in a very positive environment where students are encouraged to meet high expectations.

Mr. Carranco is a positive role model and leads a great team. The school leaders are very engaged with students throughout the day. They don't just sit in their offices. They carry walkie-talkies and are communicating with one another from different parts of campus. They are out and about during passing periods and they clearly know the names of many, many students. Front office staff are very friendly and helpful.

Hobby administration does not tolerate bullying at any point on the spectrum. They swiftly act to ensure the situation is dealt with and doesn’t happen again. They communicate with parents and students effectively in this manner. Bullying is not a huge problem at this school as a result.

Our experience has been excellent at this school. The administration is supportive, caring, and involved. The teachers are passionate, warm, knowledgeable, concerned, and supportive. Academics are challenging if you choose to be challenged. I love that the administration encourages all students to try Pre-AP and test for GT. No student is ever encouraged to settle. The music program is also incredible!!! The orchestra and band are very advanced and the students receive excellent, challenging instruction. Every school has its problems and concerns, but Hobby has no more than any other middle school in the district. And I would say it has less. Middle school is a tough age group. The support, positivity, caring, and character guidance at this school are worth their weight in gold for these students. We feel honored to be a part of the Hawk Family and feel lucky to have stumbled upon this gem of a school.

Homework is assigned, but students are not overloaded or overwhelmed. Math homework is daily, English is weekly with smaller daily tasks and pleasure reading is nightly. Other assignments are given throughout the year that require more intense effort.

Teachers do an excellent job of challenging more advanced students while assisting students who need more help and intervention. Pre-AP classes are excellent and challenging. The FLEX program allows students to get help where/when needed and rewards advanced students with enrichment opportunities during FLEX time. Teachers communicate via remind and respond to parents queries/concerns in a timely manner.

Administration communicates to the students that they care. They teach integrity, pride in yourself and your behavior, and positivity. Positive Purple Power and #YouMatter is a mantra here. This attitude creates an amazing and powerful environment.

The administration at this school is exceptional. They truly care about the students and the school community. Their own children attended Hobby, which says a lot about their investment in the school. They strive to know each student by name, they are visible and present - greeting parents and students, attending events. They lead by example and are have earned respect by exceeding expectations on a daily basis.

Hobby does a great job of meeting the academic needs of every student. Hobby is an extremely diverse community - families from wildly different backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and incomes. You can’t judge this school solely on test scores. There is so much opportunity here in such a positive supporting environment. Handling this diversity at the individual level of each student is one of Hobby’s best strengths.

The amount of homework is acceptable. Usually my child has Math homework daily and research work for English weekly. There are bigger research projects in Science and English throughout each semester.

The teachers at Hobby really care about their students. Teachers do a good job challenging students (and helping where needed). All teachers participate in before and/or after school tutoring which is very helpful for students who need extra help. Hobby leadership recently instituted Flex programming where two days a week students have time during the class day to obtain help in classes where needed. Teachers can flag students to come to their class for extra instruction. If a student is not flagged for help, they can attend an enrichment session. The kids love this program which copies what is done at the high school level. Most teachers use the Remind system to inform parents/students of upcoming tests/quizzes/project deadlines.

The leaders at Hobby have worked very hard to help the very diverse student population become more cohesive. They have instituted positive reinforcements for good behavior. The leaders at Hobby have either gone to Hobby, had kids, or have kids at Hobby. They truly care about the students and the Hobby community. The leaders at Hobby are looking for ways to engage students of all levels and to make sure that no one falls through the cracks.

The leadership at Hobby does an excellent job in teaching kids about bullying. They bring in guest speakers who really reach the kids. Whenever my children or children of my friends have experienced bullying (seeing it or the object of it), Hobby leaders have dealt with situations swiftly, professionally, compassionately, and fairly. They are extremely concerned about the safety of all students.

Our experience at Hobby has been excellent. My children have loved being at Hobby and are proud to be Hobby Hawks. They love their teachers and participating in sports and arts programs. Hobby has an excellent music program (band, orchestra, and choir) including beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes. I highly recommend Hobby Middle School, whether your child is in special education, gifted and talented, or somewhere in between. There are so many opportunities available to students no matter what their interests. Hobby feeds into Clark High School which is also an excellent school.

I wouldn't give it a star at all if I didn't have too. This school is horrible and academically these students are behind. The students are very disrespectful and there is some racism going on at this school. I am looking for another school to put my child in, this school is ridiculous.

No books are sent home. They have to rely on a computer and told to look the problem up on the computer. That's what teachers are for to teach and answer questions not have then look it up on the computer if they don't understand.

I try to stay in contact with my child teachers to stay on top of academics since parent portal have been down since the beginning of school. I have a hard time getting feed back.

The bullying here is absolutely horrible. None of the principals do anything about it. They sweep it under the rug as if it never happened or punish the student that was being bullied.

Nothing is ever done and if something is done in most cases not. The student being bullied is punished.

I think it's ridiculous how the children are free to behave any which way they like. The only time administration does anything about bullying is once it has become a disruption to them, after it has already affected the student in a harmful way. Every year it just gets worse. There is no structure, unless you're in some kind of trouble, then you have guidelines to follow. Kids run around cussing, slapping each other, smacking other kids on their butts. I wish my child NEVER went to this school. They should try uniforms and discipline. My other child went to Jackson M.S. and never had ANY of the problems that I am having to deal with now. Staff knows exactly what is going on, but clearly they do not have the proper training to handle theses situations appropriately. I will most definitely be moving my child out of this horrific joke of an "educational" facility!

A student recently said it best. "This is the worst school. The administration is always mad and stressed out and they are mean to their employees. I feel so sorry for the secretaries because they cry a lot. The place looks like a prison and the teachers are so unhappy. I don't understand why the Principal and the crazy Academic Dean are still employed at Hobby Middle School. They are so mean to everyone." The minute you step on campus you see very unhappy people. Test scores are the lowest they have ever been. Bullying is out of control. Kids cuss out teachers all the time. Hobby has a lot of drugs and fights and nobody seems to care. I wish Hobby could be great again. It just gets worse every year and it seems hopeless. - a parent.

Administration knows nothing about setting a tone to reduce bullying or build a positive environment of respect. The attitude here is so negative. The kids are trying to be cool in a bad way. We moved our child.

I am generally a very positive person, but I really hate this school! Kids are allowed to do whatever they want, there is lots of cussing and bullying going on right under the teacher's noses, they hear it all, but don't do anything about it. It is a very unsafe environment, and students are not respected whatsoever, they are treated very poorly.

I LOVE this school my daughter is an 8th grader, she is in all pre AP classes, she is involved in band, student council, tennis, art and is in the science club. She has and has had the most caring teachers, and the principal and the rest of the administration is amazing. Their one and only priority is your student; their well being, their success in their studies and socially and their enrichment as an individual. The homework is pretty heavy, but I know my daughter is going to be prepared for high school. My daughter has all kinds of friends, from different parts of the world, because Hobby gets all the students from most of the district that come as refugees and war affected countries. It is amazing how these kids speak fluently in a matter of months. I love the exposure my daughter is getting from being in a school that is so diverse and still excels academically! Thank you Hobby!

Nothing special, pretty average , usual school where students are allowed to pretty much do or say whatever they feel without any serious discipline consequences it appears. Not impressed
