There is a secret about Central Catholic, and this is it. The environment is good, the sports culture very competitive. The academics, though, have very much waned. There is very little rigor. If your son is very intelligent, he may not feel good at Central. There is no accountability for late work; 80% of the boys are on the Honor Roll to appease parents who think their sons are brilliant. So, don't send your son to Central unless he is very socially adept and knows how to distract himself with sports and extra curricular because the academic learning is not what it used to be. This could be because CC has gone too far into athletic investment.

Central Catholic High School is a premier all-boys institution that has had to adapt and change over the last 170 years; however, the school's culture and traditions have not been altered. From the first moment you step onto campus you are welcomed as family and invited to experience the school's mission in action. With award-winning programs (JROTC, Band, Athletics, Academics, etc.), CCHS is what a student - a parent - a faculty member - a Marianist - makes of it. CCHS has been an excellent choice for my son. Although we’re not Catholic, he has learned to respect others’ faith. The school teams pray before every event, often in a nondenominational manner inclusive of everyone. It’s a beautiful sight to see parents and students together in a circle covering the entire parking lot, praying and holding hands.

Initially I was concerned about academics but after four years I can wholeheartedly recommend this school. There are two clear tracks academically— advanced classes and “regular” classes. Having only experienced “advanced” teachers, I can say they go above and beyond to reach every student. The teachers work extremely hard to build relationships with the students to better teach to their individual learning style. They push the students to excel, and there has not been a single weak subject. My son has excelled at English, math, science, and social studies because of the level of care from these teachers.

The administration is top notch as well, particularly Principal Dr. Hernandez and Dean of Students Ali Goljahmofrad. They work tirelessly to know and encourage the boys and are always available. They have huge hearts for these kids. The head of advancement, Mr. Charles Delgado, is also an amazing resource for any advanced courses, in addition to being a fabulous history teacher and go to mentor for the boys.

The counselors and college support is outstanding and proactive. If there’s anything the school could do better, it would be to better educate both students and parents on college requirements at the beginning of freshman year and not wait until junior year. Good colleges are highly competitive and many CCHS parents are unaware of the average high school GPA their students are competing against, Waiting until junior year is too late.

The school is awesome. The teachers and staff are involved in their teaching of the boys. On the other hand, the new band director is not worthy of his position. The school lost a great band director when Mr. Solis left.
Mr. G. Gutierrez lacks leadership skills. He appears to be more interested in being their buddy than in leading a marching band.

I have two sons that attend Central and I can say that not only are they receiving a quality education they are learning to be be young men of character, dignity, integrity and respect. So happy we sent our children here.

There is no such thing as one school is a great fit for everyone but CC delivers a great education at an affordable price. The support of the alumni is second to none. The teachers have mastery of their perspective subjective matters and are undoubtedly committed to helping these boys be college ready but this school has so much more than that to offer. The faculty and staff nurture their lifelong potential. Long live the "Brotherhood".

my son knew no one at this school, but now has a lot of friends there and loves it. I am seeing a lot of growth in leadership and self confidence. Its a fantastic group of kids to associate with. There is a great energy there from the teachers and the student body.

I was quite concerned at first that my son would not like it, since he was coming from a public school and did not know anyone. But he made a lot of friends there and is in no rush to come home. He actually enjoys hanging out at the school afterwards with all his friends.

The parents at this school are very friendly and its a great community to be a part of.

My son is in physics his freshman year. Seems like I took that later in public school, but regardless it is definitely challenging him course wise.

I would recommend this school. It's been better than I expected and I can tell you I expected a lot because it was a huge stretch for me to afford this school.

By the way, the lunches are second to none. My son eats breakfast and lunch there every day and sometimes sneaks in dinner. They feed him very well.

I feel that all they want is money! MONEY MONEY MONEY! You can't even see your grades if you haven't paid them!

Central Graduate 1989. Central and it's environment has helped shape the business owner, father, husband, and friend I am today. Our Alumni is strong and we refer to each other as brothers. Citizenship is a big part of Central's culture. You do not have to look very hard to find Central alumni in leadership positions throughout San Antonio.

This is a school with a lot of heart and some very caring teachers. It provides excellent religious formation! However, be aware that there is a huge focus on sports here; if your son leans towards science, mathematics or the fine arts you will probably need to research other schools in addition to this one.
