We are not Catholic. We weren't sure how that would look when our son set his sights on STH. He has really enjoyed his theology classes- the academic pursuit of understanding how faith has shaped our world, geography, and politics- the big picture -- not just Catholic catechism.
Critical thinking about complex issues and how they relate to the ethical dilemmas every profession faces is stressed at STH. And while the school is Catholic in presentation, people of all faiths are welcome and encouraged to express their perspectives. These perspectives are not only well received but respected and result in dialogue and growth. My son has learned about different viewpoints and learned to try to find a middle ground among them -- something the world needs more of.
The school is centrally located - and everything that comes with being within spitting distance of downtown -- access to the good and the bad of a major American city, so if cities scare you, this isn't the place. On the other hand, what is SO beautiful about the location is the radically diverse population that attends STH. It pulls from around the city and mostly mirrors Houston's ethnic breakdown -- more so than any other private school. It is also financially diverse. Well-rounded schools have all types -- the super wealthy and the just getting by -- and at STH, they are all afforded equal access to a stellar education. With a robust financial aid program, young men of all backgrounds can become STH alums.
I give it four stars for "excited about learning" only because it is school. He is, however, excited to go to STH and be a part of the community. I also gave four stars for the family engagement. We came from public school, and there are groups of parents from Catholic schools. Their boys are friends, and they are friends. It can be, at times, intimidating to join in things, but the people are very kind.
My son is a better human for attending STH.

My son is a sophomore at St. Thomas. My husband and I are confident that we have enrolled him in a wonderful environment. A place where he is respected and challenged and where he is growing in the right direction as a young man. For example, my son has created many strong friendships with other upstanding boys here. The school is run very well. And the schools leadership is excellent. If you are considering St. Thomas for your son, take a tour. After my husband and I toured when our son was in 8th grade, we both fell in love with the school. And we are so happy we did!

St. Thomas is really focused on building the entire man...through academics, faith, brotherhood and athletics. I knew how key it was for my son to go through this key time of maturity in an environment where he wouldn't just be a number or slip through the cracks. I needed for him to be known and at St. Thomas he definitely is. He has been allowed to figure out more of who he is and what he is passionate about and he is exploring topics that are more and more interesting to him. Seeing him dive into Engineering or AP Environmental Science made me realize the true preparation that STH gives before college. He is staying engaged and looking to learn more when he leaves STH...fresh and challenging subjects have really inspired a love for learning that I didn't expect. Kudos to the STH leadership for their great strides in working to nurture the entire student including their emotional well-being. Yes the school is structured and strong, but the teachers are dedicated to really connecting with the boys and supporting them. My son will graduate in May and I know he will leave STH feeling proud of what he has accomplished there, but also knowing that STH is still his home and that the brotherhood there doesn't end when he graduates. I chose STH because of the men I know in my life who went there. Men of strong character who are smart, thoughtful, driven, and memorable for how they live their lives. My son has learned how to be that kind of man and his brothers at St. Thomas will support him as he lives his life in good times and in bad. They are family. EFND...Eagle Fight Never Dies!

This is my sons first year at STH and he has found the community he was looking fora family outside of his familya brotherhood. STH has welcomed us with open arms from the beginning. The constant encouragement to be involved on campus, the support offered for mental health (ie. Wellness counselor), the extracurricular activities, the staff support and LRC are among our favorite things at STH. The doors to success and support always seem to be open no matter what. We feel the love and are impressed with all of the support available to our son.

My son is a junior and has had an outstanding experience. He is taking advanced classes that are challenging and stimulating. His teachers are inviting, engaging, and dedicated to his success. He plays sports and is a member of several clubs. He enjoys the service opportunities and appreciates giving back to his community. He likes being in a Christ-centered environment.
As a parent, I have always felt included and support by the staff and other parents. Their are numerous volunteer and social opportunities throughout the year. Without a doubt, our family is so glad we chose St. Thomas HS for our son!

We have been at at STHS for 8 years with two of our sons being graduates and two currently students. Each of our sons have different personalities, learning styles, talents and interests. STHS has been a positive experience for our family. All of the boys have made some good friends, especially during their sophomore year. They have all been challenged academically and our two older sons were prepared and successful in college. In short, STHS will help form well-rounded, good young men.

STH is a college prep school, challenging. The homework requires planning ahead. Time management is gift if you have the natural knack, but it is a skill all students need to acquire for school, for life. There is a lot of reading and essay writing for nearly every class. Expect to read 3-4 classic books in English every year, and novels. Students have to take notes in all classes. Much like a college, teachers are allowed to set their own rules for their class. Some allow make up work, some do not. Most all offer extra credit work. Students learn to to take up their questions, requests for extra help directly to the teacher via email or in person. The school wants students to be ready for college and become independent.Bigger concerns or issues can be taken up directly with the academic office. Teachers respond to emails, phone calls and so does the Administration.

I feel there some extraordinary teachers. Very high level of critical thinking in their curriculum. However, some are difficult and incalcitrant to the point of ruining your childs ability to succeed and get a grade point average they need to get into colleges. It doesnt matter how hard it is if they make impossible to the grades you need to get into good colleges. Defeats the point.
Posted: May 20, 2016
Beyond acceptable. As a freshmen you are the same level of a college and I dont see the point of exhausting the students beyond necessity.
Posted: May 20, 2016
At the moment I think they try although there have certainly been experiences where my child is defending himself from bullies and he gets admonished. I also think they have teachers who hold there students to a very high level of accountability without being held to that level themselves. There is also more focus on competitiveness than anything else.

Our son had scholarship offers from several schools but we choose STHS because of its philosophy of brotherhood and we felt it would be a more supportive and spiritual environment. However, we have been deeply disappointed. The faculty seems more intent on protecting itself then in looking to why there is a growing number of unsatisfied parents. There are a predominant number of very wealthy families whose son's are serious bullies and have diminished the brotherhood experience the school markets they embody. It is a struggle to get into any extra curricular activities and there is so much homework that there is little time for much else anyway. Although they tout that they give large amounts of financial aide that turns out to be untrue as well especially compared to the schools they compete with. There are some very good teachers there whose curriculum is well developed and on par with many colleges. I commend them, but do not be surprised if your child is lonely, isolated, exhausted and has teachers that could care less and that are absolutely unsupportive and unavailable. I hope they come to recognize they need some improvements. I feel there certainly is the potential there.

Many teachers are good. English teachers are very good and caring. Several teachers, many in history, are not only not good teachers they are rude to students and do not treat them fairly.

School work is several hours per night. But coming to private school this is expected. Concern is much of homework is busy work.

I have three sons who are attending STHS. It is an excellent school providing something for every type of students. Courses in advance classes and AP are offered, teachers are available before and/or after school to assist with questions. The LEC, Learning Enrichment Center, works with those who have learning differences. One of my sons has ADD. Extra curricular activities include sports, and programs for the non-athletic. Rocketry club, Spanish Club, Columbian Squires and many more. I like that the students are required to complete service hours, a prayer is said every morning, there are Masses throughout the year. The school motto is Teaching Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge. After attending St Thomas every student is ready to succeed in college or whatever they decide to persue in life

Our sons are both graduates of St. Thomas and we could not have chosen a better educational experience for them. They were extremely well prepared for college and I can't thank the faculty and staff of St. Thomas enough for transforming them from awkward adolescents into truly remarkable young men. More importantly, I am so grateful for the family environment at St. Thomas. I was not only impressed by the students that my sons came in contact with, but also the parents who I met from being involved in various extracurricular activties on campus. I will always be an ardent supporter of STH. It will be an absolutely wonderful experience for any young man who is looking for a challenging, Christ centered environment.

I am a former student who attended St. Thomas High School from the 9th to 10th grade before transferring to a large public school. I strongly urge against sending your kids here. The teachers were great but most students that St. Thomas accepts are extremely toxic (rancorous but not competitive). Nearly everyone who attends this school is either a bully or jerk. This school does not check the backgrounds of their applicants indicated by the large number of freshmen in my class who had been suspended numerous times and/or expelled from middle school. As a result, many good kids who came to this school with high hopes eventually transferred. In addition, the faculty does not discipline their students. In some ways, the faculty encouraged their students to bully each other and wreck their classes. Because every class was like a human zoo, the academics were hardly top-notch even though the teachers were great. One of my teachers admitted in class that Strake Jesuit (the rival school) was a better school. Lastly and unimportantly, girls rarely come to STHS during our breaks.

St. Thomas High School is a great school. I have grown deeply in my intellect and faith since coming here and the school has been a great resource in my quest for knowledge. The teachers are all knowledgeable and supportive of us students and there are many different ways to accel both academically and athletically. The community is also very accepting here and anyone can make friends very easily. My friends I meet here are probably going to be friends for life. I would highly recommend St. Thomas for any students who want a challenging academic environment and a common brotherhood among students. It is definitely on of the best private schools and the best all- boys school in Houston.

I do believe St. Thomas high School adequately prepares students for college success, however, it does not in any way develop an adolescent's EQ (emotional quotient). The faculty and staff at this institution do not set good standards of how a mature student should act, and there are countless occasions I can recall where my son (class of 2012) was encouraged to bully through the actions of his teachers. The staff does not care about the individual student, and the administration has been known to treat wealthier students differently. Often times many of the classmates your son will have when he goes here will be second generation. If you are a parent looking to send your kid to a place that will instill catholic values, do not go here, your son will learn to hate this place.

Our son is finishing his freshman year as STHS, and we could not be more pleased with his experience so far. His critical thinking skills have been stretched and developed, he has been challenged without being overwhelmed, and he has been made to feel that he is truly a member of a school family. HIs teachers are very approachable, and want the kids to succeed. They are dedicated professionals, very much connected to the school's motto of "Teach me goodness, discipline and knowledge." We have been warmly embraced by the parent community. As a volunteer, I have had the chance to be around some of the students and I am awed by not just their civility, but their confidence in speaking with adults, with kindness, courtesy and openness. I am confident my child will be more than prepared for college after receiving his diploma from STHS, but more importantly, he will be a better man for attending the school.

Our son attends STH and is in the class of 2014. The school is academically very challenging. Curriculum is exceptional and it is definitely a college prep school. The athletic program is very well support by the school and there are so many sports that all students will be able to play at least one sport. Since STH competes in TAPPS athletic league there is less pressure to win at all costs like some of your 5A schools. Most of the after school clubs such as the debate, theater are top notch. There is a strong sense of community with the students, parents and faculty. STH students are much more likely to work together and not participate in less than constructive peer related activities (bullying, discipline, and character issues etc) like some other high schools in the city of Houston. We believe our son is receiving a very well rounded education. We very strongly recommend STH as a high school.

My son (9th grader) has only attended since Aug. 2011 so things may change in the future. My son has an average near 89 for all his classes. The school has a cohesive curriculum and that is its strength. The information is overwhelming and the amount of teaching is not commensurate with the information that is given. Additionally, it seems as if 25% of the work is busywork and of minimal educational value. I hope the busywork diminishes and the teaching gets better because the home-schooling my wife and I do cannot last much longer.
