Weve been sending our kids to this school for the last 10 years. We love the safe environment, the friends theyve made, the relationship they have with the majority of their teachers, the small community feeling with the other parents and more importantly the fact that our faith and Catholic values learned at home as family are continued at the school. Not only they have excellent education but also have the gift of daily mass and also receive classical education, they go from Pre-K to High School something very difficult to find. Yes, theres some room for improvement as in any other school, but if youre looking for a Christ-centered education then this is your school. We have another child on her 3rd year at the school and will be sending our youngest kid next year.

A lot better than public school. Academically and behavior is accounted for. One srar for a couple unprofessional behavior by faculty members. The old saying do as I say and not as I do in just a few words to sum that up. No cafeteria kind of a let down. Beautiful building in need of landscaping. Truth be told, atleast your child has as a chance here. Public they do not. Most of the faculty is absolutely wonderful and talented in there occupation. I plan on sending my next child here as well.

This school is the perfect fit for our kids. Academics are top notch and faith formation is strong. When we first visited the school, we could see the smiley faces and well-behaved kids. The school has become a poor excuse for a Catholic school since Mr. Spencer became principal. He has a toxic temper and has run off quality teachers. Two of my favorites, and there were more. He will do anything to put a feather in his cap. The Pastor did nothing. We couldn't take it anymore.

Two of my children attend Atonement, and their experience has been very positive. Their teachers (pre-k through 1st grade) have been very engaged and supportive of their learning, and I am astounded to see my childrens growth in knowledge. Highly recommend!

Excellent school. I have my 3 kids going to this school. If you want your kids to grow up and stand for the faith, send them here. Daily Mass is a Bog Plus! I dont know of any other Catholic schools around in US any more has daily Mass as part of their curriculum.
School has its own issues financially because of a huge building they built without a real goal.

My children have attended The Atonement Catholic Academy for eight years. They are currently in middle and high school. We are thankful for the excellent education and solid faith formation they have received. Teachers are amazing according to my children. They have a true vocation to teach caring for the students intellect and soul. My children take pride in what they learn and feel challenged in a healthy way to be their best self. The school choir program is very strong and well recognized , it inspires every student from pre school to High school to participate actively while singing at the daily mass and at the wonderful recitals, concerts and competitions (upper school) that take place throughout the year.

The "classical" education here is a front that covers up an insidious culture. Its traditional identity is not founded on authentic practices. In reality it is a new school of recent converts that thrive on rigorous mediocrity. It has failed, continues to fail, and is losing money on all ends. Mostly due to its incompetent leaders, administration, & parents. The turn over rait is high for principles... over 19 in the 20+ years it has been open. This is a huge reason the SA archdiocese tried to push this school out. And then the ordinate was quickly acquired. There is many good individuals here, but not enough to outway the bad actors. Some of the staff should not be caring for children due to their low level qualifications. Not Catholic school quality at all.

As an alumni, I do not recommend this school. Yes, I've met some good people there, but that does not out-weigh the negatives. There's favoritism amongst families. I was bullied at Atonement and no one seemed to care. You're even bullied if you have a different political or religious belief which is something you shouldn't be forced upon. Teachers force their political beliefs on you, which is disrespectful. They always emphasize good Catholic morals, but the never seem to express it themselves. The saying, "Treat you neighbors like you want to be treated." doesn't seem to happen. Some students and parents are NOT respected for having a different opinion. It's childish behavior. I did not enjoy my time there. The people who do, were most likely favorited, respected because they had the same beliefs, came from a wealthy family that benefited the school, or is well-known.

If your kids are transfers from other schools, they will have a very hard time here. Curriculum is rigorous, staff is welcoming, but so far the teachers are very rude to my kids and myself. Unrealistic expectations for elementary kids including preK. Page long letters about every negative thing they can think of will be sent home weekly. I'm actually shocked at how dismissive the teachers have been with me. Huge disconnect between administration and teachers. It is such a shame that this place is ridiculously rigid to the point where there is absolutely little to no grace. Teachers are overwhelmingly OCD and do not care about the kids. One teacher seems quite annoyed if you talk to her. None of them offer love or support at all to the kids. This administration seriously needs to assess the teachers at this school.

I've had a bullying instance with my child in the form of ostracizing by other children but some of it was because we really pushed Christian behavior and so did the teachers. My child tries to follow these teachings but I feel some of the children did not in regards to decision making, daily prayer, respect to others, dress when away from school, etc., my child was helped by removing electronic devices (not allowed at school), cutting out social media and talking through with the counselor and by getting with other families children to give advice and help her navigate. This is her second year in middle school and she is doing MUCH better and is happy. We have to participate and do our part as parents. Working together with the school was the key not expecting them to 'fix' it for us.

The school is not a daycare. It is a college preparatory school. The academic expectations are high. Moral values are taught and displayed everyday. How are they able to do this? I'm not sure but I can tell you that some families don't like anyone to correct their child and feel excluded if everyone of us parents don't feed into their discontentment.

Holding true to the faith and calling out a student who isn't completing assignments, is disrespecting peers and teachers, a teacher who is not teaching, correcting undisciplined students or expecting participation in holy mass are not a bad things simply because parents don't want to accept that their child isn't performing well.

Most teachers are school parents also. They care about your child. That I know for sure.

My children are not the best behaved all the time. We are not wealthy. We are a minority (African American). My children are not at the top
of their class. All of this being said they are happy and love their teachers. The discipline is great and the spirituality is terrific. These teachers do not coddle my children but they do take the time to talk with them and they keep me informed on their progress. I participate rather than drop them off and 'jiffy pop' out comes my smarter child. I disagree that the faith is taught but not practiced. The teachers teach responsibility, respect, forgiveness, acting morally, pray to God and to look to him for guidance, help each other, etc., if parents are looking for the teachers to be warm and fuzzy all the time when their job is to teach them this place may not be a great fit. God was not always warm and fuzzy but he IS a loving God and our teachers model this. The faculty teaches your child and correct your child because they care about the child.

The homework requires planning and lots of attention. They do not accept mediocre submissions. It can't be slapped together at the last minute. I'm a disciplinarian and so this works for my children. Some may find it difficult to keep up.

I have 5 children at this school. They have grown to be faithful Catholic children who are loved by teachers and friends. The teachers are very in tuned with each child. Very little disruptions in class. The curriculum is awesome and the SAT scores show it. The older students are wonderful leaders and great examples to our lower students. They are kind and often provide insight and encouragment to the younger ones to keep working hard. The school is safe for our children which is also extremely important these days.

Teachers who do not teach effectively don't stay long. I've had two teachers who did not wish to teach the curriculum because they did not wish to give homework. They were gone soon because compared to the other similar classes the students fell behind which was obvious to parents who had been at the school for a long time. I appreciate the decisiveness of the administration.

One of the students in my class was exiled and shunned from her class because she harbored different views from most of them. They made fun of her and played pranks on her quite often. The staff did nothing to help the girl and instead told her to maybe not talk about those things or bother the other girls. It was bad enough that they eventually took all of their kids out of there.

To go to the atonement, you've got to be fairly smart. There's an entrance exam. If you're weak in any subject you're waitlisted. There really aren't many students with learning disabilities.

It really just depends on the teacher. Most of them aren't qualified to teach at a prep school; they've only have a bachelor's at most. There is one guy there who's got his PhD, and his class is awesome.

For a Catholic school, it was basically what was expected. Teachers got really political around november (voting) and often worked some kind of rhetoric into their teachings. The majority of the people there are Republican so most people agree on the conservative stuff, but they go way to far. One of my old history teachers once told us that the 44th president was entirely responsible for abortion. It was kind of funny to hear. As for teaching, in highschool, they give you passing grades because they don't want to retain you for the year or make you drop out. They're more concerned about their 'blue ribbon ' school merit than actual teaching. Most classes aren't hard at all, and (from experience) are mostly equivalent with public schools Pre-AP courses. There aren't many clubs (except a shoddy excuse for art and I think robotics?), and they're all scheduled on the same day so it's not really fun. There are no classes dealing with fine arts (besides choir but choir isn't a choice). If you've got problem children, I'd certainly recommend sending them here. It's like regular high school, sucks the spirit and your individuality out of you.

As a faithful Catholic school Atonement Academy encourages our children to grow their faith at the same time as their minds. This school is challenging and has a defined structure. The school is in the process of building a stronger school spirit as well as an athletic department. With the dedication, work ethic and success Atonement has had with the music and education it is without a doubt that in time the athletic department will be equally as strong! We have six children with three currently attending (two are college graduates and one is still at home) many personalities. The Atonement Academy with the rich Anglican Catholic history has been a blessing for our family that we hope continues!

It is the fatal weakness of public schools, including charter schools. Truth can never be something that is only talked about." In NO WAY does the administration do anything other than talk the talk. They and the faculty do not walk the walk of classical or liberal education. The school has a few good families who are the minority. Charter schools can educate the whole person in ways Atonement never will.

Wake up parents! The negative reviews are all true!. Don't be fooled by image and appearances. Daily mass is nice but you will not find Christ-like behavior or love toward neighbor in these halls and teaching practices are below average. Just not worth your money. Read the negative reviews! There are rules, just like at any other school. The difference is that Atonement ENFORCES those rules. Some people might complain that this is "too harsh" or "unfair", but the truth is that REAL life is not going to be easy on you when you are dishonest. This school not only promotes honesty, but it also proves that there are consequences when you cheat or are unfair to another person.

My child was a September baby entering Kinder in 2015 we started the year thinking we would just be keeping up with public schools. At the end of the year my daughter was reading the books, doing math at a high level such as add, subtract and a lot of deductive reasoning, telling time, counting over 100 and most importantly constantly asking questions and giving her opinions of how God affects your file on a daily basis. The school, administration and the teachers are Exemplary! If you want to be below average, not have a family environment nor god in your life you have other options. The Atonement Academy is a fantastic Catholic environment. My children have attended the Middle School and Upper Schools for the last 3 years, and I would have them attend no other Catholic school in the San Antonio area, because we are focused on a few things that are our priority:
1. Daily Mass, 2. orthodox Catholic teaching integrated into all studies and school life, 3. rigorous academic standards and top tier results, 4. a safe and loving environment with students who are good Christians to one another
5. small class sizes which allow teachers to really know and care about your child's progress; those same teachers, in the vast majority of cases, are also very willing to work with parents to help kids adjust and succeed with the course material
If these are your priority for your children, then you would love Atonement.
Now the difficulties. While these are not ideal, they were not a reason for us, considering our priorities, to put our children somewhere else.
1. Athletics are a low priority, and there is little investment, recognition or support of the athletic programs and coaching staffs, relative to other private schools in SA
2. There has been some turnover of teaching staff that has disrupted the learning experience of students, particularly in the Middle School
3. Most of the teachers and administrators are top notch, but, just as in any school, there are occasional duds, some of which were let go, it seems, during last year's school year, which was described in #2.
4. There is more homework assigned than may be necessary, and it is generally not coordinated between teachers. The handbook limits homework on weekends, but that is generally not followed or enforced.
My kids and I love Atonement. One of them mentioned, after a few months of attendance how much she loves going to mass every day! Another child has become so much more of a scholar, who enjoys learning, more than he ever did before attending Atonement Academy. It is an adjustment, for sure, and will instill a new level of discipline that would not exist at any other school, but that discipline will carry your child through the difficulties of High School and University success. It will also prepare them to live a joyfully Catholic witness as adolescents and young adults in the secular culture we face today. I, for one, would not want anything less for my kids.

If you want your children to have an orthodox Catholic teaching with a Tea Party political agenda, this is the place for you. Don't trust what you see and read on the surface. The "top 50" rating is actually a poll taken by supporters of this type of orthodoxy and is not any real measure of academic achievement. A little online research will reveal that. The Blue Ribbon status occurred several years ago under a different administrator who passed away. There aren't many of the faculty left who were there when that status was granted. Over 10 faculty members left, or were forced out, last year. The current administration is mired in control issues and is oppressive to both faculty and students. For example, they hire teachers stating health insurance is offered, but it's a terrible plan not accepted by many doctors and low coverage limits. A few teachers moved or changed jobs to come to this school before discovering this and then left after a year. Dig deeper into the actual facts and learn the truth. The administrative style and personalities are the real problem. Research it carefully if you're considering sending your child here. Don't take the boasting at face value. Dig deeper.

I love the Safe and Healthy Catholic Atmosphere at the Atonement Academy. Students build positive Friendships and learn to help each other progress through a variety of challenging courses offered by the school. On one specific occasion, I was especially impressed by the speed at which my daughter was able to move between classes per my preference as a parent. This is just a single example of how the Teachers and Staff work very hard and always go above and beyond.

My kids stopped singing after attending Atonement. If I ask them what happened their eyes get teary and they shut down. The choir experience left them traumatized. Even when Atonement has some excellent teachers and academics I wonder what happened. We left of course and I wonder how can a school steal a child's joy.

The Anglican use Mass at Atonement is beautiful and exceptional, and is about as close as you can get to the traditional Catholic Mass as it used to be performed. I have been to many other Masses (including the one suggested below), and the Mass at Atonement I enjoy the most. It is not only about appearance. But the only way is to know is for you to go for yourself and make an informed decision and not one based on an obvious Internet troll's 1-star review simply because he or she doesn't like it. And don't make your choice based on my opinion. Go see for yourself. Some who have had a bad experience for whatever reason constantly try to bring this place down. It's doing pretty well actually...to say the least. And there does appear to be many trolls posting on this forum.

I enrolled both my daughters here after researching all the other private schools in the city. I have never most experienced anything other than thankfulness that I chose this school for my daughters. My eldest has just been accepted into Rice University.

As the comments show, you'll either love the school or hate it. This school is one of the last remnants of what was once a good thing we all had going but took for granted. Most of the complaints truly are exaggerated if not outright inaccurate. Everyone does have a right to his or her own opinion. Unfortunately, technology has made anonymous complaints very easy whether true or not. This school is utterly fantastic on numerous levels. And it is only getting better. Those that disagree have their reasons I suppose. But usually the ones completely satisfied have better things to do than write posts on Internet forums. It took a lot for me to actually chime in, but the record needed to be set straight. It is not an exaggeration that this is the best school in San Antonio. Other schools are great at many things as well. Most are not. But this one is the best for the right reasons. The school puts the students first. Its mission is without question solid. The staff are extremely professional and love their job. The students develop a bond with each other for the rest of their lives, only being outdone by the Aggie solidarity, which says a lot. Those are the facts. Trust me.

I went to school here for two years, 7th and 8th grade and thought I liked it. My parents sent me to Central Catholic for high school and looking back now it's one of the best things that has ever happened to me. It opened my mind to bigger and greater things, as Atonement likes to lock their people in their own world. They basically preach that anyone that doesn't believe their religious and political views are evil and are condemned to hell. The teachers are rude, and have very illogical class policies. Daily mass, religion, and choir are forced on you. Athletics are pathetic and there is little to nothing to do outside the school, as in clubs, etc. So unless you want to end up doing something with religion or music, steer clear. Please. You have been warned.

I love Atonement. I graduated a few years ago, having attended all fourteen years (Pre-K through 12). It's a place where I truly felt at home; with the Lord, as well as my classmates and teachers. I loved daily Mass and I miss it. The high school academically prepared me for college and I'm at the top of most of my classes. The workload isn't so heavy if highschool gets you used to it. It also helped me build the backbone I need to defend my faith - college can be a very liberal place, but I know the love of God and I know how to show it to others without being defensive or pushing people away. I loved many of my teachers there. You can see how good their hearts are. I remember them always willing to go the extra mile to help a student out, even if it wasn't related to their class specifically. Like any school, there were some duds over the years...but the good always outweighed the bad, Graduates have gotten into places like St. Mary's, A&M, UT, Rice, Notre Dame, Hillsdale, I even had a friend who was interviewing for Yale. Atonement is a blue ribbon school - if you use your education correctly, you can go places. Many grads are either done or on their way to getting degrees.

Don't trust the administration of this school. We had our children enrolled for nearly 10 years at the Atonement Academy. We are very devout Catholic family and were undermined as parents of our children. Our children were advised against our requests and our family decisions. They say that they are family oriented and that family comes first; however, they will have no problem telling your children that you are wrong. This destroys the family unity and for a larger than the 2.3 child family, this creates much discourse within the family. We used to be the greatest advocate of AA and would hear stories of the gossip or the administrative over-reaches, and excuse away. Not any more. Our family unit has been greatly altered by a "Catholic" school who should have supported parents instead of "cottling" to disgruntled teenagers. They will take your money and use it to access the minds and attitudes of your children. Beware.

My kids go to this school for a year now. They've been to many Catholic schools both in Ohio and California whenever we moved. I am able to compared the quality of education they provide to our kids and honestly, this school met beyond my expectation. I was skeptical at teh beginning due to the daily mass and my kids also had a hard time for the first few weeks and they both cried about it but after our support and encouragement and they get used to it, they now just not like the school, they love it! I also asked my kids about the quality of education, they both said it is far way advance compared to other Cathlic schools they went. My 5th grade daugter is already learning transversals in Math which is an introduction to Geometry and my son only learned it during freshman. We sent our kids to Catholic school because we want them to be successful and have a good foundation with cosistent discipline both from home and in school. Techonology is not always the answer to learning. The kids have computers at home already and we do not want them spending to much time in computer instead of intearactie learning. I realy love the teachers for being consistent, teach sudents on acntbility

Hi, I'm a high school student at AA. There's a lot of reviews coming from parents and I don't see a lot from actual students coming from there. I personally love the school. If you want your child to have a good foundation of his/her religion as a Catholic, I absolutely recommend this school. AA teaches the students great reverence for the Mass and the Eucharist. I don't know where parents got the idea that they destroy your childhood here. When I first came to the school, everyone was reaching out to me. What drew me to the school was the Mass. The liturgy is so beautiful. They teach the students to sing their best for God, and therefore have one of the best choirs in the area, if not the best. Going to Mass every day for so many years, imagine how many graces your child will be getting going to this school. AA not only prepares the students' minds academically, but also spiritually. Plus, I attended their last graduation of high school students. The school gave a total of 3 million dollars of scholarship for the 17 students alone. The school absolutely wants the best for the students. Read the Vatican's review. If you send your child to this school, your child will thrive.

The Atonement Academy is very clear about who they are and make sure that you know and follow their ways. I have been a part of Catholic Education my entire life and never encountered this "type" of school. The school was not a fit for our family. I am not sure it is a good fit for most families. They are the only Catholic school in the area and I think people try to make it work for them by going along with the way they do things. Children are not put first in this school. Daily Mass, beautiful buildings, and their strict interpretation of Catholism are first and foremost. My children were extremely unhappy but it took me awhile to catch on that the change in their personalities was due to the stress of this school's environment. The approach of the teachers is outdated: busy seat work, not hands on, and rarely do the children leave their desks. The technology is nonexistent- no computers in classrooms. If you are looking at this for your child- please dig deeper than the invitation to Mass and tour of the school. On the surface it looks and seems wonderful- look closer. If you send your children, watch closely and make sure the Atonement ways don't break their childhood spirit.

First and foremost, this school is CATHOLIC. If you are looking for an outstanding private education only at Catholic school prices, move on; it is CATHOLIC. If your child behaves and he or she is willing to work very hard every day, he or she will grow in wisdom and stature.

I went to Atonement for all of high school, and I cannot give a worse review. It is ruled by an authoritarian priest who, by his own admission, believes that learning Latin is more important than learning essential modern skills such as computer usage. He and other administrators believe in teaching the high school-level students responsibility, and they attempt to do so with unreasonably strict discipline and uniforms, by giving them roughly the same amount of freedom as they do to a 3rd grader, and giving a homework load equivalent to what you would expect in a state university. The academics could be exceptionally good, if they administration did not require the students to spend so much of their time on daily Mass, and mandatory religion and choir classes for all students, at all grade levels. If you send your child here for high school, expect that by the end, they will be: -a incapable of any religious or philosophical thought not approved by the Vatican; -unable to comprehend that people who disagree with their religious, political, or social views are anything but stupid or evil, and -completely lacking the skills and self-reliance needed for college or employment. While the Atonement Academy appears to be an architecturally beautiful location to introduce the youth of today's generation to more conservative values that center around the principles of Christ, it undoubtedly misses its mark. In the younger grades the teachers are exceptional, however, the higher the grade the more the bureaucracy of the school comes into play, and the morals suddenly vanish. Instead of encouraging a freedom of thought, of expression, they instill rigid discipline to conform to what is their perception of a good "Catholic". The administration in particular the deacon and the priest are at the forefront of this, and parents wishing to ensure their child doesn't have a rough time at school, also conform. The parents of the high school students as well as the administration are no better than high school students, involving themselves into catty affairs with teenagers half their age. The Atonement is not a place for intellectually stunted children, but at the same time, is not the place for parents wishing to instill actual religious values into their children.

Very good school. We sent our girl to this school last year and she loves to be there everyday. Daily Masses is a big plus. School teaches lot about moral life and religion which is a must for any catholic/christian kids.

hey! listen up!! all i've heard about this school is that it worries all about money and scares children into doing well. its the total opposite!! yes, we go to mass everyday, but after a few weeks, youre used to it. i went to a school where i was non-stop bullied and stereotyped and pressured for grades. here, at atonement, my classmates love and respect me and im allowed to work at my own pace. sometimes the homework is a bit heavy or i struggle a little more on one subject than others. but doesn't that happen at all schools? and people say its all stuffy and loser-ish because they don't have a strong sports program. but the school's still fairly new. no more cliques, no more bullies. at this school everyone REALLY does love everyone. i came to atonement and i'm never going back. -A STUDENT
