This school is phenomenal. The small family-like environment lends itself to meaningful learning. Teachers and staff genuinely care for student well being. The school has adopted a wonderful initiative working towards diversity and inclusion. The small class ratios and teacher flexibility are almost unheard of in any school setting, making it great for students who have various learning difficulties. One of my kids is neurodiverse and I cannot imagine going anywhere else. I'm proud to say my children attend St. Thomas.

We have had a fantastic experience since starting this year. My son has more one on one attention than he got at his previous public school. The administration and the teachers have been wonderful communicating with us. The schoolwork was a challenge coming from public school but he has adjusted and is fitting in very well and his knowledge is expanding. I originally moved him to St. Thomas due to the precautions the administration was taking with COVID and I couldnt be happier with our entire experience.

Great school with a warm, loving and safe environment. I have had two children attend the school and they both loved it. The teacher and administration are kind, knowledgeable and approachable. I could not have chosen a better school for my children.

It is my opinion that there is a complete lack of structure and governance at this school under the current Head of School, Colin O'Neal. There have been multiple events that have occurred at school, including hiring substitutes with no background checks along with MANY other unacceptable, and in some cases unfathomable, events which I will leave unsaid to avoid accusations of slander. This has resulted in our family losing all faith and trust in the administration. We have moved our kids to another school mid-semester along with a number of other families.

As a teacher at St. Thomas I highly recommend this wonderful school! Every teacher knows every single student in the school. The class sizes are small, which allows the teachers to work with each individual child at their own level. Struggling students are able to get the extra help that they need, and high level students are challenged to reach their full potential. On top of that we have the best playground I've ever seen! Come and check out our school!

I have one daughter that has attended St. Thomas since Pre-K 3 and is now entering Kindergarten. Her teachers have been phenomenal! My daughter is very shy and quiet. Being in a small classroom with a teacher who knows her individually is very important to me. Every year I can see so much growth with her coming out of her shell. She has also received the individual attention needed to challenge her full potential. Thanks to the teachers at St. Thomas, she began reading at age 3, has become more confident in speaking in front of small groups, as well as becoming so knowledgeable about the cultures around the world. You wont regret bringing your child here!

The academic work being done by students at this school is amazing! They really do learn so much.
Posted: September 4, 2019
Teachers here are great! However due to some funding issues many great teachers were laid off and their classes were combined.
Posted: September 4, 2019
Teachers try to help kids build character however from the lack of support from leadership this doesnt usually work. Unfortunately many of the good children end up being lead astray because they see the less well behaved children getting away with it.
Posted: September 4, 2019
The leadership at this school is the parents. This leads to major bias and favoritism. The principal only talks to students who misbehave or get into fights and does not actually punish them in fear that the parents will withdraw there kids (money). Many fights, bullying incidents, injuries, etc have been a consequence of this. And its all covered up so parents dont know the truth.
Posted: September 4, 2019
This school accommodates children with disabilities very well!
Posted: September 4, 2019
Bullying has gone rampant at this school due to the lack of discipline. Many kids get picked on or bully others, many fights and arguments occur on the playground and in classrooms everyday. Some of the same kids fight everyday and are back at school the next with no repercussions. And even some teachers and parents take part in the bullying. This is occurring at such a higher frequency because the school is having financial issues and is too afraid to tell parents anything to do with bullying, so over and over the issues escalates until injuries occur and they have no other choice. Over all this school does not take violent threats or actions seriously and will try their hardest to cover the bullying issue up.
Posted: September 4, 2019
3/10 Overall there are some great qualities to this school and it has potential but due to its financial issues it is continuing to struggle. They cant pay teachers enough and are charging the parents more for less programs (or half run programs with great names that are ran by teenagers and not professionals who are skilled in child care and academics). The academics and some of the after school clubs are the best thing going for placing a Student in this school. However the environment, leadership, safety, and discipline standards, all need immense recovery before I can recommend anyone send a student to this school.

Recognize student individuality and adapt to learning styles.

Top notch!
--Church-School Family provides an environment where my family is part of something greater than ourselves. My child is known by every member of faculty and staff, and has friendships with children at nearly every grade level.
--Smaller class sizes allow our dedicated, experienced, highly-skilled teachers to encourage my child to excel in his areas of strength, and spend extra time with him when he is struggling, so that even in his weakest areas, he will perform above grade level. Every child is respected as an individual, which provides the felt safety needed to build confidence and foster a love of learning.
--There is focus on executive function and emotional intelligence. Kids dont just learn rote memorization. They are encouraged to think for themselves, advocate for themselves and others, and build leadership skills.
--Daily chapel provides a sense of community as well as Christian education. There is an expectation that all peoplestudents, teacher, staff, parentsare to be treated with dignity and respect. This expectation is so strong that, when we see kids not behaving this way in other venues, my child comments that certain words or behaviors would not be tolerated at St Thomas.

Good teachers never stop evolving and teachers at St. Thomas are constantly seeking ways of engaging their students. There is an increase this year in Project Based Learning, learning through play, and interdisciplinary curriculum. The small class sizes set teachers up for success at bringing their strengths to their lessons.

St. Thomas has implemented the 5 C's of 21st Century learning...actually it's 4 C's but we've added Compassion as the 5th "C" because in order to have a bright future, children need to receive compassion and be taught how to give it.
Posted: January 30, 2019
There have been some transitions in leadership but things have settled down. The new Head of School is knowledgeable and has set a strong vision for the current school year and the future of St. Thomas. Changes we've seen already include implementing a 21st Century learning paradigm, establishing a bilingual Spanish program, the development of a school choir and growth of the Fine Arts program.
Posted: January 30, 2019
The individual needs of a child are always our top priority, and our small class sizes help ensure teachers have the capacity to focus on each student. We have students students with unique gifts; for example, students who are learning math at a more advanced grade level (i.e. a 3rd grader joining 5th graders for math). When a student presents a unique cognitive, emotional, or behavioral need, we work with the parents and community to create an ecosystem of support for that student.
There are learning differences that St. Thomas cannot accommodate, and we discuss this with parents during the application process to ensure that our school is a good fit for their child's needs.
Posted: January 30, 2019
The word 'discipline' shares its origins with the word 'disciple'. For St. Thomas, this means that situations like bullying must become an opportunity to teach and learn. If a student transgresses against another it is addressed in a way that is developmentally appropriate for their age, and restorative for all children involved.
Posted: January 30, 2019
STAES has been a leader in Clear Lake Area education for over 50 years, and that legacy continues today. Utilizing a 21st Century Learning paradigm means that we are focused on the "4C" outcomes for students: creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills. As an Episcopal school, we have added our own "5th C" of compassion at the core of this model. For example, by implementing our daily Spanish program, students not only become better communicators through bilingualism, they also learn to be compassionate for others who may not have fluency beyond their native language.
Students in 3-5th grade science are learning the basics of coding which requires critical thinking; they then use those coding skills to creatively produce digital comics to demonstrate their scientific knowledge on a topic like lightning. This holistic approach to teaching and learning is what makes our school great.

I've heard from several fellow St. Thomas parents who took their kids out of CCISD because of bullying and how grateful they are for the school culture and environment at St. Thomas. The small classes create an environment where the kids have to work out their differences, and where the teachers are able to focus on these social/emotional issues as they arise.

Homework reinforces skills that kids are learning without overloading them.
Posted: January 30, 2019
My son's academic abilities have really grown beyond my expectations - not only his skills, but his excitement for learning has grown. I know many students who graduate from St. Thomas are accepted into the Magnet/WAVE programs at CCISD and are thriving - I read a bunch of them won awards in the district Science Fair this year, so clearly the teachers here are doing many things right!
Posted: January 30, 2019
I recently joined my kiddo for a Monday assembly and the principal was talking to them about how to use mindfulness breathing to calm themselves down when they are upset, angry, or frustrated. It was really cool to see!
Posted: January 30, 2019
The new Head of School is amazing - I've never seen someone treat my son with so much kindness and understanding. He talks to the kids, teachers, and parents a lot about neuroscience and child development and is moving the school in a really positive direction. For example, they recently expanded their Spanish program to a bilingual model, so that K-5th graders attend daily Spanish classes as a core part of the curriculum.
Posted: January 30, 2019
The small class sizes definitely help the teachers give kids the individualized attention that they need. I imagine they don't accept students with severe learning disabilities, but I've also have friends whose kids have things like dyslexia, or ADHD who are really happy with the level of support the school provided/is providing.
Posted: January 30, 2019
Incredible! It's amazing to find a place like this that focuses on my child holistically. My kiddo was getting lost in the big-school model of CCISD, and here at St. Thomas he's able to thrive and be himself.

There is a speech therapist who comes to school and parents can pay for a session with her. Other than that, St Thomas does not have teachers trained to deal with students with special needs of any kind. They should really state so openly at the moment of enrollment, making sure parents understand that their kids are not going to get any help at this school.
Posted: December 18, 2018
Chapel does not fix problems if a bully does not face consequences. The school should start suspending students for certain cases of terrible behavior, making sure that parents have to deal with their offspring. At present, if you pay, your kid gets to stay. A school with dropping enrollment enrolls anyone and everyone, to the detriment of the classroom atmosphere.
Posted: December 18, 2018
All the work goes home at the end of the day, I am yet to get a clear answer what it is that teachers are doing during the day.
Posted: December 18, 2018
All the good teachers of years past are gone, with the exception of the PE teacher. Their ELA teacher does not even speak proper English, what a shame! The school used to have a strong reading program, now even the library is gone after the wonderful librarian retired. St Thomas students used to win PSIA competitions, now even a 4th place is celebrated. These days St Thomas graduates struggle with match in intermediate school.
Posted: December 18, 2018
Discipline is not enforced. Most kids are simply bored in chapel and it fails to instill values.
Posted: December 18, 2018
Having daily chapel does not constitute leadership, it is not a seminary, it is a school and it has to teach public school curriculum as a minimum. There is a new principal every year, I guess the minister and the principals do not get along?
Posted: December 18, 2018
Very disappointing, very irksome. If you dare question the school "leadership", or tell the school you are not coming back next school year, your child will be bullied by their "enrollment director", who is a heavy-handed actual leader of the school and has been there for decades.

My son is going into 4th grade, and has been at St Thomas since Pre-K. We have had a very positive experience for the following reasons:
--Church-School Family provides an environment where my family is part of something greater than ourselves. My child is known by every member of faculty and staff, and has friendships with children at nearly every grade level.

The school has been a fantastic place for my child to receive an education. The teachers really care for the students and the entire staff helps create a safe and loving environment for the kids so that they can feel secure and maximize their learning potential. We tried some other pre-schools and found that the first priority of the leadership was not the kids (it was profit and high test scores). St. Thomas had the right set of priorities and values that we were looking for and we have been there ever since. My child will graduate from St Thomas in a couple years and I know we will miss it, along with the great teachers.

I had three sons go through St. Thomas School from pre-k through fifth grade. St. Thomas was and still is the perfect environment for kids!! Great teachers (two were nominated for the Teacher of the Year award in Houston - The Crystal Awards), great atmosphere.. the kids were allowed to go out to recess twice a day!! They need to run and play in addition to learning! All three of my boys were accepted to the CCISD WAVE magnet program coming out of St. Thomas. Can't say enough good things about it!!

This school loves to tuck most things under the rug. They like to tell parents what they want to hear, but not the truth. We had a horrible experience there last school year. They have gone from 85 students 2 years ago down to 58. They have no business being open. The education that you would pay for there is not what your going to get. Save your money.

The school struggles with a smaller size to remain viable. It's a lovely school where your child is known by name by almost all who teach and work there. The teachers are all seasoned, experienced people who teach in an environment where they can focus on the children and preparing interesting learning opportunities, it's not uncommon to see several of the teachers' cars still there into early evening and on the weekend. The smaller class size allows for more individual attention and support to understand a concept or to keep moving, they are not held back. Lately there has been a lot of teacher turnover, which is a concern, and several of the replacement teachers have not been up to par. I do hope that the school can weather through and grow stronger, my child and I value the education and relationships.

St. Thomas is no longer the school it once was. Poor leadership has fed the decline of this schools education standards and climate. The head of school does not support her teachers and all the best teachers are leaving & have left already or have just lost their spark. We will miss the families & good teachers that once made this school great. But our children need a better education.

Sadly this is our last year at St. Thomas. My only complaint so far is that it stops at 5th grade. Our experience here has been wonderful and for my son life changing. St. Thomas brings out the best in all of it's students.

St. Thomas is a warm, caring, loving atmosphere that provides outstanding educational opportunities from a highly qualified staff. The art, drama, and music programs are especially creative and engaging. The core values of Competence, Creativity, Character, and Compassion are emphasized on a daily basis. St. Thomas has been voted "the best private school in the Bay Area" two years in a row and the majority of our new students come from glowing referrals from out parents. The teachers view the students as individuals and adjust their curriculum and teaching styles to bring out the best in each child. We have a wonderful before and after care program that concentrates on getting homework completed, crafts, and physical activity. We have numerous after school programs such as quilting, karate, music lessons, Jump Bunch, chess club, and art lessons. There are field trips to numerous educationally interesting venues, including a week-long camping trip in the fall for the 3rd-5th graders. The PreK-3 and PreK-4 programs are very advanced and do an excellent job of preparing the children for Kindergarten and first grade. We embrace the whole family in a very nurturing atmosphere.

I would. It take my child anywhere else. I say this as an educator myself. I have the highest standards. I expect a lot from my child's school and St Thomas exceeds my expectations. I want to be a part of my child's education and they are the only school in the area that let's me truly be a part of her learning process. This is the best of homeschooling without my having to do the work! Most amazing is the ability for me to come in and eat lunch with my child! No where in the area allows you to do that!

St Thomas is really a great school. My son has ADHD and the small class size helps him get the teacher time he needs. The staff is all wonderful. My kids go in most mornings to hug the principal because they love her! I would highly recommend St Thomas for any family that wants their kids to get a Christian education or that has a child that needs a little more teacher attention.
Posted: October 23, 2013
Both my grandchildren go to St Thomas and love it. I love the fact the teachers know them by name, and hugs are free and plentiful. The outstanding teachers are caring and seem to genuinely care for the children.

Wonderful school.caring.loving teachers and staff. The curriculum is top notch and highly comparable to public schools. Teachers are willing and capable of changing their teaching methods to fit the individual child.

My children attended this school and it is a wonderful school with amazing teachers & curriculum. The Pre-K, Kinder, 1st & 2nd grades are especially strong. The librarian is amazing. My kids left the school with a desire for reading that is unsurpassed thanks to her individual attention to each child. The parent who mentioned that this school was more of a MDO is wrong. She is a disgruntled ex-parent who was asked to leave because she was so incredibly difficult and disrespectful to the teachers. STAES is not just a school, it is a safe and loving environment for your children. You give your child a well-rounded education and life-long friendships. It is a family. The cons to STAES is that other families have not found it yet, and the class sizes have remained too small. A few more children in each class would be better. Due to this the cost has gotten a little too high. The strength is the teachers, but the current principal would be better suited to teaching at a University. Her PHD in curriculum is impressive, but her management and admin skills need a great deal of improvement. Luckily she has a good staff and school board to help overcome these shortcomings.

The diversity in some of the comments made is a concern.... seems like some parents believe their children are receiving the attention and care warranted for the cost of a private school, and others are not. I talked with a previous parent who said their child was the only one in their class not doing well, and there was no initiative by the teacher or school to assist. Makes me wonder if the school is set up for only those that fit a mold... also, the facility concerns commented on in January and just recently are also a concern. So... why would I choose this over other options like Galloway?
Posted: July 9, 2013
In response to the review by the parent on May 24th. What was said could not be further from the truth. All of the elementary teachers have been in place for more than 5 years, some from 15 to even 20 years at St. Thomas. It is a wonderful place where children flourish to their fullest potential. For example, for their entire time here at St. Thomas, in addition to the basics, my children have had homework assigned to them based on their individual needs (they weren't challenged enough before and got bored FAST). Also, the overall standardized test scores from past two years are excellent as well. My children have been exceedingly happy here, and are building healthy and accepting peer relationships. Also, they are definitely outpacing their peers at other area schools - except perhaps Galloway, which I hear great things about as well. Sure the facilities are a little dated, but we've experienced brand new schools with all the latest gizmos and whatnots and were VERY disappointed with the quality of education received. In my opinion, St. Thomas is the best elementary school in the Bay Area.

Two years ago, my son started here in preK, and my daughter, who is 2 grades ahead of him, was attending an exemplary/award winning public school in the area. The experience my son was having, and the quality of teachers, and the learning experience was so vastly superior to my daughter's that the second there was an opening in her grade we applied for it. Luckily she was approved for admission, and we haven't looked back. The teachers are loving and genuinely care about each and every student and the tuition is work the sacrifices we're making. I know this because not once have my children said they were bored in school. I cannot recommend this school highly enough.

I am a parent with two children attending St. Thomas now and have been there now for 3 years. We are extremely pleased with the education that is taught here. The teachers are wonderful and they do a lot of hands on instruction. My children have been through the pre-k program and after reading the comment that 'was written by the parent below, I was very upset in the way they spoke about st. Thomas . It is not a Mother's Day out program. Both pre-k 3 and pre-k 4 have a curriculum. If you are looking for a pre-k program you should come out and see for yourself that this is an excellent school. There is a very low teacher/student ratio, which allows for a lot of one on one instruction. As for the security statement, that is false!!! St. Thomas teaches are students in a safe environment.

We were so excited to have finally found a school for our children where the staff was very friendly and appeared well equipped to teach to our high standards. However we were very mistaken. Their PreK program is nothing less than a Mother's Day Out (MDO) program as they learned absolutely nothing whilst attending the school. The school has no security for the safety of the children and majority their curriculum were printed from Google, the same sites that I use at home to do projects with my kids. We withdrew after 3 months. The Prek-4 teacher was unable to differentiate teach to my son's level as he needed to be challenged. The Prek-3 teacher did absolutely nothing worth writing about. Unfortunately we felt that having our children in a MDO program would have benefited them more than this private institution which lacked in many areas except for their warm staff.

Having come from another private school, we wish we'd come to St. Thomas sooner. The quality of the teachers at St. Thomas is vastly superior, and the head of school, who has a doctorate and is a curriculum specialist, is a huge asset. The people here are also genuinely friendly and welcoming. I'd read some review some time ago that described this school as a hidden "gem" in Nassau Bay--very true.
