McCullough Junior High School has been a great experience for our daughter. The teachers are caring and dedicated, the academics are strong, and the school provides a positive environment where students can grow both inside and outside the classroom. We’ve been very impressed with the communication, leadership, and sense of community.

McCullough isn't your average junior high. It is extra! Extra large. Extra organized. And extra outstanding in areas from academics to music to sports to family engagement. We have had 7 kids attend McCullough and can attest that it is a well-oiled machine that helps kids develop independence, autonomy, and responsibility. The staff are caring and professional. The courses are varied and engaging. The admin is superb. A top-notch school all around.

I remember when I first walked into McCullough Junior High. I was a wee little lad in a pretty damn big school. However, the school was quite a ways less scary than it seemed. The advantage of such a large middle school, the second largest in Texas to be exact, was that I could instantly find people I could connect with. The diversity is truly an underrated aspect, and I have met people from areas I have never even heard of before. When it comes to the quality of education, the teachers are second to none. The grades don't give this school justice, and the quality of education given here in honors and level courses provide a massive amount of support. Shout-out to Mrs. Driver, Mrs. Beineman, Coach Baird, and many more. When it comes to safety, the school staff are extremely competent. With it being such a large, diverse school in all aspects, fights are bound to happen. However, in the past years there has been a heavy decrease. Fighting is taken very seriously by school staff, and all fights are broken up nearly immediately. Any problem with this school is more due to managing its large size and not the management. 100% would recommend now that I am finishing up 8th grade.

When looking for a school i focused on a top school for my child, after research and talking to the school counselor I found how great McCullough JH is. We are very pleased with the school and my son has found it challenging enough, he’s in honors. One of the things that I’m most impressed about is the over communication the school does to make sure parents stay in the know.

I was a little stressed when my son started 7th grade last year, however, I am now absolutely thrilled and completely satisfied with the educational experience he's receiving at this school. Mr. Hughes, the principal, is awesome – he's really open, involved, and cares about everyone. The teachers are amazing, too. Their dedication and competence are truly inspiring. I also want to give a special shout-out to the outstanding band program – it's an incredible asset to the school and a wonderful opportunity for the students!

I have 3 kids and my 2 older girls went through the whole CISD school system. We then moved to Montgomery where my youngest daughter started school. After 3 years in the Montgomery school district. I decided to move back to the Woodlands so she could continue her education in the Conroe school district. She is currently attending McCullough Junior High and we are very happy there. The teachers and staff are great and the principal Josh Hughes is amazing. It is a great school and the kids are definitely not bored with all the extra curricular activities. Don't hesitate to send your kids there.

My son is in his 2nd year at MCC. When he started at 7th grade, we did not know what to expect, being such a big school for only 2 grades. But once school started, it took him a week to figure out all his classes and set up a routine for the alternating days. He has been fortunate to have such great teachers who have been really supportive.

The principal Mr. Hughes is committed to excellence and is passionate about making McC the best Junior High in the state. His enthusiasm creates a welcome and exciting culture in which the students are learning and thriving. Mr. Hughes' communication skills are excellent, and I feel way more informed about events at the school than in years prior. We are happy to be a part of the McC community!

We currently have an 8th grader attending McC in their second year under Mr. Hughes's new leadership. I cannot speak about previous years, but I will say that his communication style and efforts to keep parents informed about campus happenings are absolutely essential, and he does a phenomenal job.

Regarding teachers, my daughter is having a wonderful experience. I appreciate that the administrative team requires students to be accountable, whether it involves their homework or communicating with teachers rather than parents interacting with the teacher on their behalf. I think this is an excellent way for them to learn accountability and communication, preparing them for high school and beyond.

Students can select from a range of classes, including standard options and AP courses, especially for preparing students for particular high school classes and future academic pursuits.

There are plenty of athletic programs, as well as excellent fine arts courses. Overall, we love McC. We look forward to our youngest attending in the next couple of years.

I have an early dismal private PE student at MCC and have been very disappointed in the school's response to anything and everything related to the program. Changes to bell schedules for testing, pep rallies, and the first days of school were not communicated in advance, and emails were not returned when trying to obtain said unreleased information. The kids have been pulled out of class early or left in the 100-degree Texas heat waiting for their parents. Yesterday, the kids were in the parking lot by themselves with no staff. The kids are treated like the forgotten step kids with NO information forthcoming from the school.

Additionally, the choir department is terrible about releasing dates and times ahead of time for after-school mandatory events that conflict with students' sports requirements. A block of days, or a day with no time, is supposed to serve as sufficient information to schedule transportation, child care for additional children, and parent work schedules.

We have had positive experiences with some teachers, particularly LA and science.

Overall, as a parent the school's communication has been VASTLY disappointing for this part of the school's student body. Positive shoutout, however, to Shriver (LA), Nash (math), Roberts (LA) for excellent communication.

Fights in the hallway, ridiculously overcrowded stairwells, especially now with the construction, contribute to a lack of school safety.

The school is designed for the boys to play football and the girls to be on the cheer squad or drill team. Good luck to anyone else who chooses something else.

McCullough Junior High provides a great transition between intermediate and high school where the students are motivated and encouraged to gain more independence for their studies and activities. The teachers recognize hard work, and the principal, Josh Hughes, LOVES this school and these kids. He had worked hard to bring an upbeat, positive, meet-the-kid-at-their-level vibe to the school. He is big on positive reinforcement and is highly visible to parents and students. Very pleased with our experience here thus far.

This is my son’s 2nd year attending MCCullough Jr. High (8th grade) and as a school overall it’s one of the best! Everyone from the faculty staff to all the teachers they’re all amazing at what they do! I personally have attended McCullough over 27 yrs ago and it’s still the same as it was back then! McCullough is a wonderful school to attend and be apart of the Highlander family/community!

I would like to highlight the management and kindness of the director, counselor, and teachers. Communication is excellent; they keep us well-informed about activities, projects, and special events, as well as our children’s performance. When needed, they provide opportunities for support and guidance. They are always open and committed to doing what is best for our children.

We have had such a wonderful experience with McCullough. My son came in new this year and was nervous to enter, but it has been great. He joined the football team. I think by getting involved he was quickly able to make friends. The coaches have been great and encouraging despite it being his first time playing organized football.

Additionally, he really enjoys 95% of his teachers’ classes.

Definitely glad we have him at McC!

I am so happy with our experience at McC! Our principal is absolutely phenomenal and works tirelessly to make sure the kids are safe, engaged and have excellent opportunities. He also makes sure that the parents are well informed and constantly updated on what’s happening on campus. The choir program is amazing and there is something for every area of interest from sports to the arts. I feel that the study skills they are learning will take them all the way through to higher education. I have a current 8th grader and can’t wait for my younger one to get the McC experience. McC is under construction this year but it’s going to be an even better campus when that’s finished!

We feel incredibly lucky to have our son attending McCullough Junior High in The Woodlands, TX. This school is, without a doubt, the gold standard for junior high education in our area. From day one, we’ve been blown away by the unmatched school spirit, the dedicated staff, and the overall sense of community and support that surrounds our kids every single day.

The faculty and staff at McCullough go above and beyond to ensure that every student feels seen, supported, and safe. It’s clear that their top priority is not just academic excellence, but also the well-being and personal growth of every child who walks through their doors. Whether it's through their positive daily interactions, after-school support, or extracurricular encouragement, the staff truly looks out for our kids like they’re their own.

The school also offers an incredible range of opportunities—from advanced academics to fine arts, athletics, clubs, and leadership programs. It’s the kind of place that prepares students not only for high school, but for life. Our son is thriving here and we couldn’t be more grateful.

McCullough Junior High isn’t just a school—it’s a family. And we are so proud to be part of it!

This school is below average in every way. The environment is toxic, with extremely rude and impatient teachers, in addition to violence such as theft and fights being constantly present.
Teaching is done superficially, based on videos and homework.
The staff as a whole is horrible.
The transport system is one of the poorest and most inefficient you can find, with unprepared drivers, poorly maintained buses and extreme lack of passenger behavior (children ride the bus without any controls). Delays of almost an hour are constant.
The interior of the school is disgusting, with an old structure, windowless classrooms, dirty and old carpets.
If you do not want to expose your child to the above, do not choose this school. Despite the reported grades, believe me, it's worse than most schools in Texas.

One son's at McCullough now, & in outside PE (gymnastics). Another son will start there in 2019.
I'm thankful to the principal for giving us parents so much info at the beginning of the year. Like, don't take more than 2 ap classes, for example. Kids we know in Memorial who took 4 without info-or anything about anything from their principal compared to what we got-are staying up 'til 2 nightly w/ homework. Principal covered everything and made our lives easier-no wonder we like him.
The posts about bullying and football could be at any school. Depends on the particular group of kids in his/her class-not much upon the school itself. I was bullied 4 years, middle/high at Kinkaid (Memorial). My sister, theater crowd + cheerleader 3 years later, had a great time, same school, in a kind class where everyone got along.
If bullying is a real problem for your child, then take the initiative and change schools. That's what my parents did for me after they figured it out, and I finished at Episcopal in Bellaire.
The Woodlands' public schools are incredible academically and staff-wise, IMO, and even comparable to Houston's best private schools in where a student can go from them. I keep up with many high school friends whose kids attend them now-like we all did growing up-and all of our kids are learning at the same high rate.

You are made fun of and looked down upon if you wine or complain about how you are treated by other students. The adult men in this school have a child like mentality when it comes to their definition of toughening a kid up.

Posted: December 1, 2016

Posted: December 1, 2016

Leadership is driven by who is the most athletic. Most attention and value is placed upon those few. Every other child is made to feel incompetent. This is coming from a parent (myself) who has 2 children currently at McCullough. One is a top athlete and the other is more into his studies. Very unbalanced.

Posted: December 1, 2016

Athletics and competition/comparison is of the utmost value. Anything else take a huge step down in value or importance. Again, this is driven from the principal who is very good personal friends with the coaches. A bunch of ego inflated, bully, hard core men.

Posted: December 1, 2016

Many of the teachers are more concerned about controlling the classroom as a whole. Little tolerance or interest in the needs of the individual.

Posted: December 1, 2016

Posted: December 1, 2016

It begins and ends with the principal. Mr. McCord has been at this many years. This man is a hard core guys guy. He puts on a good show and tries to be funny and present a facade like he is in touch with the students (he remembers names well, but it ends there). He is very close-minded and out of touch. One example... he suggested that my son will learn more hanging out before, in between and after games from his team mates and coaches than he will in the class room. Off balance, and downright bad judgement. Guys and men talking smack and harassing each other is more valuable than time in the class room?

The school is large, but there is something for everyone. My daughter has had a positive experience. She does have a lot of homework, but she is able to manage it and her other extracurricular activities. She has thrived at MCC thanks to all the teachers and staff.

Posted: April 16, 2015

The children at this school are a cancer. The bus drivers are slow and unreliable. All the teachers care about is the grade and they are all psychopaths. Over all, from what my son says , if I went to this school I would probably kill myself.

Posted: March 25, 2015

This place is so crowded that you cant even take your backpack into the classroom. This amounts to a waste of time for the students as well as more of a chance to get your stuff stolen or forget your stuff. On top of that not many students are friendly and no one bothers to explain anything to you if you are new.

Posted: August 23, 2014

This school is so OBSESSED over how your water bottle is, alright, your water bottle has to be transperant, but not colored transperant. Oh and you'll have to be able to throw it away. Also the water is 2 dollars, and plastic goes bad after a while. And you can't use the water fountains because they're insanitary and that's gross. The teachers will act like they're the only ones giving you homework and make a big deal about it during class. If you think the teachers here are enthusiastic about students getting involved in class conversations, well, you're wrong. Do you know how many times I've felt unappreciated and left out? Simply because the teachers sighs and rolls there eyes whenever I have something to ask?

Posted: May 16, 2014

I am a current student at this school and it is a great athletic school. Teachers are quick to pick their favorite students. So if your child is an active participant in athletics this is a great school for them. Now i get to the arts. Really from my point of view the orchestra is overlooked while band and choir get all the praise. So if your child is an active participant in athletics or band this is a great school. But if your child isn't in any of these program or outgoing they will hate this school as most of the students in this school do.

I have had two of my three kids go to McCullough Jr. High. I pulled the second one mid-way through her 8th grade year. Before attending this school both of my two older kids LOVED school and were in advanced classes. That all changed here. Others are not exaggerating when they say it is CROWDED. There are thousands of kids in this school. There are lots of issues with this school. I found out that several of the kids were cutting and self mutilating, vomiting and restricting calories to fit in. Try to bring this stuff up to the staff and they will nod in agreement at your parent meeting and then do nothing when you leave their office. The teachers spend more time yelling at the class than actually teaching in the level courses. Once when I went to pick up my kid for a dr. appt. they were about to perform a "lock-down" drill and the office staff threatened to lock me in the cafeteria until it was over! I called my kid on her cell phone and told her to RUN to the office, I pulled her the next day. My neighbor's kid is in athletics and their experience is completely different.

I just finished my two years at McCullough and I am SO happy that its over. The teachers punish you for every little thing and give you so much homework its nearly impossible to finish in one night. I would have loved to be in a sport here but you have to be like a professional to make a team. And don't even get me started on the students. If your not rich and act like everyone else, your going to be looked down upon. The kids are so snobby and rude. The principal and staff only pay attention to the star athletes and A plus students. My 3 siblings have attended this school before and all transferred out before 8th grade. Unfortunately I didn't get that option. Overall, if your thinking about having your child attend this school, please reconsider. Unless he/she are any of the above.

This is very large, upscale, white, suburban, overachieving junior high school. It is the largest of its kind in the State, with nearly 1,000 kids in each grade. Its families are the cream of the upscale crop of the Houston area. Principal Chris McCord is an extremely successful manager, although very old-fashioned in many ways. McCullough is run with a obsession on just 2 areas: academics and athletics. And in those 2 areas, McCullough is on its way to breaking every record in the book. Their test scores are consistently excellent, especially amazing for a school its size. And the school is a best-in-state athletic powerhouse in every sport, and could easily compete with most high schools if given the chance. And that's about it for life at McCullough. Things like arts, poetry, environmentalism, cultural expressions, social service, technology, and other "progressive" agendas aren't really on the radar much. At McCullough, it's a tight ship - the bells run on time, the doors are locked, the kids are safe, and everybody gets their shot at the test scores and the starting lineups. Students who aren't jocks or brains will need to look around a little more to find a niche.

This school is amazing! as a kid that moved all the time before moving into the woodlands i can say that McC IS THE BEST! kids are nice and teachers are outstanding! all sports teams are amazing(we always win!;) Learning is great all new technology in EVERY classroom!!!!!!:D i am so sad to say that i have to move again after 2 years at mcC and cant seem to find a school near as good to me now that i have gone here! if you are going to go to this school you should be ready for an amazing time overall! go highlanders!:D

This is an overall excellent school. They use an older style approach--hard core studying, testing, and homework. Do your best of fail---no spoon feeding or pampering at this place. It's a breath of fresh air in my opinion. My daughter has experienced a challenging and somewhat competitive environment, and we have worked with her to acheive her best in academics and extracurricular. Some parents will complain on this site, because this type of strategy will be intimidating. If you are looking for a school to baby your kid and just process him/her through the system with little to no worries or if your kid is lazy and you lack the will to discipline, then I suggest a different school....look into a local charter or private school.....

I just moved here and making friends was so hard not everyone was nice to me and I barely have friends still!! I do not like it yes they have smart students but we get a lot of hone work and I am not just saying that because I do not like it I am up until 12 o'clock doing my home work even with some help I do not like it my friend cried because of it and so have I and I'm way more than half the year and I still do. Kids here are not nice to me I feel like an outcast

The teachers and staff are great at their jobs. Tthe school has a lot of choices for extracurricular activites and wonderful coaches over these programs. The teachers prepare the students academically for higher education in a way that is enjoyable for the students. The school's atmosphere is friendly and safe even though the school building is very large. Mr. McCord, the principal, does a great job of interacting with the students and making sure things run smoothly in the classrooms, hallways, and outside the building.

My grandchild went to school here. Read between the lines of the other reviews: This school will be glad to work with the child who is already excelling and needs nothing; but at some point any child may need extra consideration or help, not just special needs children, and this school will not give it. Note that the other reviews confirm this. They may promise minimal accommodations after years of begging, but they will not even follow through or follow the law on those. They are just moving students through and taking credit for the ones who test well.
