When recently moved to VA and chose New Kent as our home. We were worried moving out of our old school district because it was great but we’ve been pleasantly surprised by George Watkins! Everyone is so welcoming and supportive. Love the teachers at this school! They don’t lets children fall behind offering after school tutoring and mentoring. We are very impressed and so happy we are in the boundary for this awesome school!!!

Our son started at George Watkins in January 2022. He had a GREAT two years. The teachers REALLY CARE, they know what they're doing. Our son has a 504 plan for ADHD, he struggles significantly with organization and attention. In previous schools we had an uphill fight to get him the resources he needed, for teachers to even understand what he dealt with.
This was not the case at George Watkins. He had FULL support from teachers, guidance counselors, both the principal and the assistant principal.
The principal knew who we were as parents, and always said hello to our son when he walked into school. She knew him by name.
The school does a stellar job of keeping families engaged. We look forward to our younger children going to George Watkins!

Our daughter has thoroughly enjoyed her time at George Watkins Elementary School. Our interactions with the staff and teachers have always been exceptional. From the office staff, nurse's, librarians, and teachers, we couldn't ask for more. The teacher to student ratio is wonderful and the class populus appears to be more than sustainable, especially with the addition of the new Quinton Elementary School. It is also clear that safety is a primary concern of management, not to mention the presence of the awesome New Kent Police Department. Would highly recommend stopping by and checking this school out for any potential home buyers of New Kent.

GWES has been a great school for my son. His teachers have been kind and helpful. I know they have worked hard to be engaging because he stays out of trouble!

No school is perfect but the last two posts are ridiculous. The teachers and staff work hard at GWES and work hard to meet the children's needs. They there are a few teachers there that I would not want my kids to have but that is at every school. Properly what the last two posters forget is that the teachers and staff there are also have families so they cannot be on every parents beck and call. Nor are they miracle workers. If parents are not working with their kids at home there will be no improvement in the class. Stop complaining about this wonderful school and get more involved! The PTO is always looking for help and many teachers would love a volunteer to help in the classroom. I am proud to send my child to this school and love the teachers and staff there!!

Inefficient at best. I can't even begin to describe how sad I am to report that this is the worst elementary school any of my children have ever attended. Disorganized is an understatement. There is no attention to detail or remote interest in the children and their well being or safety at this school. I find myself questioning if the teachers are capable of teaching whenthey themselves seem to find the simplest task overwhelming. Everyone is just there to collect their very unhappy paycheck. I blame the principle and the school board for such a disgrace of a school to allowed to stay in operation. No attempts at improvement. Not a care is give. And it's obvious. The area is cheaper for a reason. You pay for better school districts. At a point where homeschooling is becoming a strong topic of discussion in my home.

GWES is considerably unorganized and most of the staff in the main office are rude and have zero interest in being of any of assistance. I had several problems with my sons 2nd grade teacher in which the principal stated would be addressed. From what I've heard this same teacher still bullies her students. We are over joyed to be moving this year.

I disagree with the previous posting and it is incorrect (it may be dated a bit). The school does offer some extracurricular activities such as Odyssey of the Mind, and it now offers a grant-based, after school music program. There is a gifted program called ACE (Academic and Creative Excellence), and for children who struggle with reading there are some great tutoring programs and resources. The teachers are very dedicated and often go the extra mile to meet the needs of the children! At the elementary level, I feel that smaller school districts (in particular) need to focus on academics and not sports. My little hometown school is SUFFERING because too much attention and $ is thrown into the sports programs. PS: Last spring, my son's teacher, the school secretary, and school librarian set up a live audio/video SKYPE session with my husband (stationed in Iraq) and he spoke to my son's class for 45 minutes. How awesome is that!
