One of the most frustrating parts of New Kent High School is the way the administration and some teachers handle things. The principals often seem disconnected from what students actually experience day to day. When problems come up, it can feel like they’re brushed off or handled very slowly, and students don’t always feel heard when they bring up concerns.

A lot of rules also feel overly strict or inconsistently enforced. Some students get in trouble for things that others seem to get away with, which makes the system feel unfair. Instead of focusing on helping students succeed, it sometimes feels like the administration is more focused on discipline and control.

When it comes to teachers, the experience can be really mixed. There are a few teachers who genuinely care about helping students learn and go out of their way to support them, but others seem uninterested or burned out. In some classes, lessons can feel rushed or unorganized, and it’s not always easy to get extra help if you’re struggling.

Overall, the leadership and teaching environment could improve a lot with better communication, more consistency, and a stronger focus on supporting students rather than just enforcing rules.

This school is decent for public schools, but I still find that I am unfulfilled and most teachers have a very lackluster and unemotionally supportive view.

I would like to say as a current student of New Kent High school, I wouldn't recommend coming here at all. This place looks nice at face value, but once you experience the things here, you start to realize not everything is picture perfect like how the staffs describe. The administration here is alright at best, they believe that spending money on the unnecessary stuff such as metal detectors recently is actually gonna help improve the school as a whole. The more focus they should actually spent on is the mental well being of the students here. I as a student myself had seen/heard so many other students struggling mentally, most of the stuff I've seen they've done is to improve the school image and not actually improve it where it needs to. The teachers are majority great, and some actually care about the students future(Aside from the few). An important notice I have is please, for your child sake, and yourself. If your kid is an special needs student don't put them here, I as a student here had seen so many cases of special needs getting bullied with either microaggression in most cases or straight up harassment. All the bullying gets hidden and never brought to attention which led to the bullying of these special need kids to continue over and over again in silence. I truly wished there's an alternative option instead of me being here, but unfortunately I don't have any other choice.

This school is the worst one anywhere in Virginia, they destroy any chance at kids wanting to learn or being happy by blocking literally everything with iboss. There is no way to be able to contact friends, family, or anyone because of the restrictive emails and every website known to man being blocked. But that's not the worst part, as of October 2024, there is 1200 students, and they can't manage even a single one of them. The school only blocks kids from doing what makes them happy, making all the students dread coming to school, and all the teachers suck too, there is only 10% of the teachers in this school that actually care. The administration does not care about their students whatsoever, they only care about looking good. And they make so many rules that benefit nobody other than the people in charge, whatever you do, DO NOT send any family members to ANY new Kent schools (elementary, middle, and high.) Trust me, they will be happier and they are plenty of better options for schooling anyway. Even if you live right next to the school, you still shouldn't send your family members here at all, this school just makes zombies instead of actual people who want to succeed, so please, I ask that you don't send your family to hell by sending them to any New Kent schools, thank you for reading and please, please take my advice to heart.

Because of the illegal substance abuse, if I had any other HS option we would probably take it but unfortunately since we live in New Kent, we are stuck with no other options than NKHS.

It’s amazing that our daughter never seems to have homework to do yet her grades are good. Are the students being challenged enough?

This one I will be neutral on. I know a lot of students that do have good character but there are far too many that have slipped through the cracks due to lack of disciplinary action, or maybe it’s a lack of awareness by school faculty.

I do believe that NKHS does try to do whatever it takes to reach their students whether it’s in the classroom, or via online communication methods.

I don’t really hear about bullying in the school so I assume their methods are working in this matter.

Keeps parents informed through Trojan News phone calls,emails and texting. Love the use of Chromebooks. Keeps the kids relevant in today's workforce.

After having dealt with Henrico County Schools(West End), New Kent has been a breath of fresh air..They are excellent schools!

The central office (school board) admin are absolutely terrible. They have run out several great teachers and administrators who have questioned the all powerful "oz" director of admin. There are a few lap dogs and petty admin who don't dare question the status quo and have cut off their nose to spite their face. Great kids and great teachers but just a shame that they are rotting from the top down.

They did a horrible job with my education. The case manager I had didn't even try her best or the one before her. The school at the time should of had a tutor program for me to catch up and being in all regular classes instead of putting me in slow classes. They just had a messed up program at the time. Idk If Its getting better or not but I will not put my kids in New Kent schools ever! They are all terrible! All of my school years I was with them nothing got better for me. They were holding me back cause they didn't want me to do good in all regular classes. Very bad experience with them!

Please be sure to take into account that most of the reviews are quite dated. As an employee, I can tell you that a large majority of the faculty/staff have very good intentions and want to be an active part of student success. NKHS is not immune to the ever-increasing demands and stresses of demonstrating student achievement. However, most staff AND students care about success and are invested. Moreover, there are many opportunities for academic challenge, with increased Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement options and the introduction of the first technical center/ STEM academy in more than 20 years. There is an eye on continuos improvement as well. NKHS is a great place to develop and learn.

NKHS has made great strides over the course of the past 5 years. I believe it will continue to improve as the population increases. It is worth noting that NKHS is one of the only schools in the Central VA region that has survived the financial crisis. Other counties have completely cut entire programs (advanced placement, foreign language, art, music, drama, etc) and have eliminated teaching positions in an effort to save face financially. As an outsider looking in at SBO meetings and "town hall" style meetings- the SBO has made every effort to find suitable solutions with their teachers, administration, and community so that the most important component: the students- don't suffer. They have their fare share of problems, but unlike other schools- they attempt to handle them in a way that involves community. I feel that makes a big difference.
