Avoid Crittenden Middle School at All Costs!

Crittenden Middle School is a disgrace. The administration is a complete joke, showing little to no accountability. Most teachers (with a few exceptions) seem uninterested in their students’ success and display unprofessional behavior—including openly discussing drinking and partying in front of both parents and students.

The registrar is just as unprofessional, often sitting in the office without shoes and failing to process paperwork correctly, causing unnecessary delays and frustrations. The overall culture of the school is one of negligence and incompetence.

For the sake of your child’s education and well-being, I strongly advise you to run in the opposite direction. This school is not a place that prioritizes students, professionalism, or academic success.

Every day I went to school here, I felt awful and severely depressed. There were fights pretty much every single day, and rampant bullying too. In my case, I faced a lot of racist bullying in particular, but the staff don't care. They don't care about you, they don't care about your child, and they don't care about educating. There were maybe one or two teachers who actually tried to help me. The kids here were also so terrible to the point where I couldn't believe that people THIS bad existed. My mental health went straight down the drain because of this terrible school. It's unsafe, dirty, and literally felt like a prison.

If you have even an ounce of love for your child, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE.

The staff has the rare gem of instructor, but overall the non-magnet staff is atrocious, rude, off-putting, and disinterested. The student-teacher ratio in this article is completely made up, I would be surprised if it were less than 50:1.

Students are mouthy, disrespectful, unruly, and most of all go uncorrected in this behavior. Bullying is a major issue at the school, and fights break out often. It is so bad that youtube videos of various fights are uploaded by students regularly.

The leadership staff appear to be more interested in getting rid of you than assisting. Counselors do not apply themselves to the students that are failing, preferring instead that the student seek them out for an appointment that can be days away.

Most of the teaching staff is geared towards getting their students to pass the SOLs, which as they well know is a grade on the *teacher*, not the student. To this end, students with a higher-than-average intellect are beholden to drudgery of repetition, going over test subjects multiple times, when all they want to do is learn more.

Unbelievable that anyone in this school would put up with bullying and the multiple fights per month. The school has a full-time security staff of not less than 4 officers, an on-site Newport News Police officer, and still the teachers and security staff find it hard to handle any of the multiple disruptions.

My daughter has been traumatized by this experience. Two years of Crittenden MS will stain her conscience for the rest of her life. Therapy and a loving home are the only tools left to us for what this school has wrought upon her mind. I see there are actually positive reviews present on this site; I cannot see how anyone in good conscience could leave such a review.

Through 2 grades my daughter has had nothing but overburdened classwork that has to come home as "homework", yet the teachers claim they don't give homework.

Students are super disrespectful,rude and argumentative to staff and especially to subs.Some students just walk out of class without permission, play on phones and talk all during class, over the teacher and do no work.Horrible enviroment

Amazing variety of classes being offered. The Computer Lab is way beyond what any other school can offer. My 7th grader is working happily on his first high school credits.

That's a joke! That leadership is hands down THE ABSOLUTE WORST! I've never been in a place that put the leadership's wants over the children's health and safety! If you want your child be a healthy, happy, full of life child DO NOT SEND THEM HERE! my child has come home more times than I can count with bruises on arms, legs, and side and when I call the school they just tell me they can't be everywhere. That is NOT the right answer!

The school does absolutely nothing to stop bullying. They claim to have a hotline for kids to call but the kids know the school won't do anything so they don't call. My child told me that nothing is ever done and the school doesn't care. They just do it to say they have a number to call so they look good to the outside.

WORST SCHOOL EVER! DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE! This school really needs new leadership to get it back on track. Just an utter disappointment for it to be called a STEM Magnet Program school. Do not send your kids here!

This is a TERRIBLE school. The administration is horrible, from the principal down to the office staff. The school does not deal with bullying at all - which is basically an epidemic throughout the school. There have been a number of parents who have unenrolled from The Crittendon magnet school program - why they have a magnet school with outstanding kids in a school like Crittendon is mind boggling to me. If there is any advice I can lend it’s DO NOT send your children to this school.

Even though the school has a "Hotline" for kids to call, many of the incidents don't get reported because when they do, nothing happens.

This is ABSOLUTELY THE WORST school you could send your kids to. Kids run in the halls, throw things, swear, yell, spit, and are just downright disrespectful. The teachers just shrug their shoulders and ignore what they see. The teachers don't care...they would rather be friends with kids rather than guide them and set the right example. Kids get up, walk around, talk to their friends, play on their phones...all while the teacher is "teaching". Again, nothing is said to the kids. It makes the learning environment terrible for the other kids. VERY disappointed in this school. It's supposed to be the STEM Magnet school but it is just a huge disappointment!

Advanced STEM School with great teachers and peers. Technology based math classes are available here. 9th Grade Earth Science I'd offered. One of the few schools in the area that has High school credits. You could leave the school with up to about 8 High School Credits; 6 math, science, and Spanish.

I have had some of the best experiences of my life at this school. The teachers are absolutely wonderful and care deeply for the students. I have not met a single teacher in that building that was not trying to give his/her student the best education they can. Going to this school was definitely a great learning experience for me and opened up many opportunities. This is all coming from a very thankful former student.

I love this school. The staff and teachers are great. They really seem to care about the students. The students are doing amazing work. They are creating electronic porfolios that require them to look to their future, set goals, research and decide on a course of action to attain those goals. They are writing poetry and doing various experiments, including one involving knowledge of forensic science. I think Crittenden is truly a diamond in the ruff.
