2 months ago my child was threatened by another student with a gun. Child said he would steal it to bring to school and shoot my child with it. The child was kept in my childs class. One week ago, my child was physically assaulted by the same child that threatened to kill him. It had been an entire 7 days and I have not heard one word from the schools leadership regarding my sons assault.
If I had to do it over id never have put my kids in this school. CRADOCK IS 100% BETTER

Not much family engagement. Violent students. Poorly run SPED department. Safety not very good.

Very lax safety practices. Let's anyone in the school and dont scan their ids. The principal always has her office full of friends goofing off. Sped program is awful and will set your child back. Teachers have attitudes and act like they dont want to be there. The classroom teacher to kids ratio is awful and only getting worse.

This school used to be a great school. However over the past 2 years it has taken a severe turn for the worst. Their special education department is LAUGHABLE at best. I requested a new iep for my child that took them 4 months to do... 90 days longer than legally allowed. Instead of working with your sped child, they will send them home the moment they become difficult and display symtoms of their disabilities. They also lie about your kids being assaulted and say it never happened. We cant wait to move away from this dump of a school system. ALL PORTSMOUTH VIRGINIA SCHOOLS ARE NOT VERY GOOD.

We joined when my daughter was in 2nd grade, and she is now in 5th. She loves it here and has made many solid friends. They also have cheerleading and fun activities for families to come in and enjoy or be a part of. My daughter loves her teachers, and I can tell she has been positively impacted by them.

Had to pull my children out of this school do to physical bullying. Son got a concussion and they didn't call me until the end of the school day to tell me. Also had a teacher who would scream at the students full volume. Everybody there knew but due to teacher shortage no one would do anything. Bus rides were a nightmare. Son was physically assaulted multiple times nothing done. Wouldn't put anyone permanently on the bus to supervise. Have a special needs child as well with IEP. Child was thrown in regular class with an aid that never showed to help. It was year after year with problems. Finally saw they honestly didn't care. No amount of working with them was going to solve anything.

If your children fit neatly in the box, it's my impression this school would be just fine. However, the treatment our family has received over the course of 2 children and 7 years has been abhorrent. There are some phenomenal teachers in this building however they are far too outnumbered by incompetent faculty and administrators. Special Ed has been the same, some excellent teachers sprinkled in among adults who have no business being alone with children.

Both of my kids attended Churchland Elementary and had great experiences. The PTA meetings were standing room only. The accelerated reader program kept them motivated to increase their reading levels. We felt they were well prepared for middle and high school after leaving CES. All their teachers were great. We still see them around town, and they always ask me about my kids. I don't agree with the other reviewers that give this school one star - maybe they had an isolated bad experience - because in general, the teachers and staff do care.

The staff are kind and very helpful. The Vice Principal Is very understanding and very professional. If you are going to move to Portsmouth this is the best school to send your child.

Great school with wonderful teachers who use innovative lessons. A true neighborhood school in a great part of Portsmouth.

We are implants the area. Having resided in various areas of the country. I must conclude this is a very poor excuse for a elementary program. From the principal to the front desk staff they leave a lot to be desired. Fairness is not present in administration or in the classroom. Issues go overlooked and unaddressed for weeks at a time at all. I am not sure what is the reason for the lack of care. I would highly courage anyone considering this school with the expectation of a pleasant experience to look some place else. When personnel is often tardy, unresponsive to communication attempts, and disrespectful to parents and children, it is purely an unsafe environment for your child.

This school is horrible !!!!!! The principal when she is there defends the teachers no matter how wrong they are , put words in my child's mouth. The teachers don't seem to care about the children and yell and degrade them all the time to name a few things. I know a few people that have moved just so their children no longer have to go to this school. This school never makes you feel welcome to the point I hardly know any of the teachers other schools I've know over 75% of them at least by name and grade. My children have been going here for 3 yrs and I rarely have anything nice to say since day one we have had issues. That should say a lot !

My daughter just finished Kindergarten here, her teacher Ms. Wasilenko was awesome. My daughter really enjoyed attending her class and she kept the students in line. Hoping that my daughter gets another wonderful teacher this school year.
