As someone who has been there and attended the school for 7th and 8th grade, I would like to say how unsafe and horrible this school is. This school had at least 2-3 fights every week. They just pass everyone. There are people that moved on to high school with a 2nd-grade reading level and can't even divide. The teachers are so rude and disrespectful. There are about a total of 2-3 good teachers in that WHOLE school. The staff and principal were barely even seen in 8th grade year; there were always multiple holes in the ceiling and bathrooms shut down. They only care about sports students, and if your kid is not in sports, they aren't given as much attention. They didn't inform parents about updates going on that often, maybe around once a month, and that email/phone call was around the middle of the month. This is a horrible school to go to. I went to the guidance counselors about bullying, and they sat there and spoke to me about my grades because "I couldn't be getting bullied," I guess, because I was still passing my classes. I know a lot of people that struggled mentally in that school because the guidance counselors just simply did not care enough unless it was about grades or about classes. They put kids with special needs in regular classes and not in classes they needed or gave them extra help. They gave us 3 minutes to get from one class to another, which sucked because I had a class on the 3rd floor and had to get to the back of the school on the first floor, and when I spoke to someone about it, they said that "it's plenty of time because someone with crutches did it," which was a teacher, not a student that has to move through the crammed hallways. I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone. If you have a chance to switch or just not attend this school, take that chance. and choose a different school

My child needed tutoring and she is doing so much better after really struggling due to being out for Covid. Was seriously considering private school, but very pleased with the outreach from teachers and staff. Theyre doing a stellar job!

I once went to this school and it was not a pleasant experience. The people there are rude and dont even get me started on the amount of fights that break out. I never once felt safe when walking in the halls between periods. The best things there were the teachers most of the students scared me. Over all I do not think this would be a safe environment for children.

Great school and great administration. Middle school in general is difficult no matter the city. If your child enters middle school and you expect them to be hand held like they were in elementary school you will have issues. Parents need to be involved with their children's education as well as working with the administration to have success. No school can do everything for your child. It starts at home. My daughter had a very successful 7th grade year, maintained honor roll, was on the track team and has now entered her 8th grade year. I look forward to another successful year.

Our family has enjoyed the time spent at Churchland Middle. It is a school that offers a lot - sports, clubs, great courses, and more. We could not be happier.

First thing you should know, this school does not teach science in the seventh grade! There is no SOL for it. When I called to discuss why, the answer I received was they are following district! This is the only city in hampton roads to not be STEM focused. We are active duty military and relocate in June. Do not send your child to this school if you can. There are GI fights everyday and no ad advanced classes. The only thing this school cares about is sports. All around disappointed, do not make the same bad decision we did.

This is my daughters first year at Churchland Middle School. The school seems o.k, but there are a few areas where I feel that CMS can improve. We moved to Portsmouth this year from Norfolk. It seems like Portsmouth Public Schools as a whole are still in the stone ages. In Norfolk I was able to get online and was able to look up my daughters homework assignments, and I was able to e-mail all of her teachers if I had any questions. I, also noticed that when my daughter had problems with her school work, there was help readily available. Portsmouth is the total opposite. Portsmouth does not have any online resources for the parents. When my daughter was having problems in Math, the counselor said they were in the process of getting tutors. My daughters math teacher said she had other things to do, so she wasn't able to tutor. I'm still waiting on the school to get back to me about tutoring. The school should be more proactive instead of reactive. I hope they get their act together.

My daughter came from an advanced program in our old hometown to this school. They didn't even bother looking at her transcript before putting her in all regular classes. I noticed right away and asked if they had any classes for her that were comparable. The guidance counselor said all they had was an honors math. My main complaint though was the lack of appropriate reaction when a boy full on grabbed my daughters behind in a hallway while walking to class. After getting to the classroom my daughter told the teacher and her reaction? She told her to fill out a paper citing what happened and turn it in when she got a chance! My daughter started feeling physically nauseous because of what happened and asked if she could go to the restroom. The teacher got upset with her for asking and after getting into an argument with her, she finally allowed her to go. After asking another teacher, apparently, the boy is KNOWN TO STAFF to do things like that. It's one thing to worry about her education but I never thought I would have to worry about the TEACHERS keeping her safe.
