Northern Shores Elementary School

I am a retired elementary school teacher. I am the grandparent of a child attending NSES as a second grader for the first year in the area. I have found the faculty and staff to be most supportive. The safety of my grandchild appears to be paramount. I am so pleased that this is the school he will be attending while his father is stationed here.

The school and community is wonderful. I have two daughters who attended the school and they really enjoyed the experience. Fantastic teachers, especially to include but not limited to, Ms. Hicks "Special Education", Ms. Hightower, and Ms. Jennings. Very sincere caring teachers and staff. Beautiful diverse school, please keep up the good work!

In my opinion, the staff at Northern Shores has been nothing short of amazing! I now have two children enrolled at NSES and they love it, just as much as I do. I have never experienced or witnessed unprofessional behavior or disorganized front office staff. Should you choose this school, know that your children are in great hands and you can go to work knowing your kids are getting a quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.

The staff is unprofessional and mean spirited. One of the old ladies at the front office is either on the phone or shuffling through a small stack of papers with no aim. She makes sure not to hurry and pretend that you're not there. It felt as if she wanted to make me wait on purpose. She was also very ignorant about the forms that the parents were required to fill out and was not sure about anything! I could not believe she had managed to keep her job since every answer I got from her was either that she wasn't sure or that she didn't know! I brought up a concern to the principal and felt as if she mocked me in front of her staff. I felt as if her and I were having two separate conversations and that she was speaking loudly, over me, so her staff could hear. I can not believe that grown "women" behave the way that these people have.

I have an autistic child and the gifted children's program here are very good for a public school system. Teacher communication is great and I really have nothing but good things to say about the staff. With the growing Suffolk community, I am worried about overcrowded student bodies, but as far as I know, the school administration is handling that as well as they can. I can't criticize them for that.

My family and I just moved to the area from Japan. Finding a school and home when you are living overseas is not an easy task. I relied on Great Schools to help locate schools that would fit our children's needs in such a life transition. We have a 5 year old who has no school experience. There was not much to offer in the way of preschool while living overseas and he missed the cutoff for Kindergarten by 4 days in which the school in Japan could do nothing about. When we got to Suffolk we were excited to get the ball rolling and enroll our 5 year old in all day Kindergarten at Norther Shores. When we went in to register the staff was so friendly and welcoming that I just knew this was going to be a great fit. As the days went on our Kindergartner started showing signs of anxiety and his wonderful Kindergarten teacher communicated daily with us. Due to the lack of school experience our son was not enjoying his first school expereience and his teacher and staff kindly and graciously worked with us to come up with a plan suitable for his needs. This is a great school and I look forward to watching my children grow here over the next several years.

We have 5 kids in this school and we love it! The teachers are amazing, the principal is great, etc. The teachers seem to really care about the kids and really help them to learn and understand. They go out of their way to help anyone that needs extra help in anything. I am very happy that my kids go to this school!

Since the Hispanic population is growing I am going to provide my review in espanol. Ha sido una experiencia maravillosa para mi hijo el haber comenzado desde kindergarten hasta segundo grado en esta escuela. Todas las maestras que tuvieron la responsabilidad de tener a mi hijo en su clase fueron estupendas entre ellas, Sra. Thomas y Sra. Meyers no tengo palabras por el excellente trabajo que realizaron. Les vamos a extranar!!!!

My daughter is now a 1st grader at Northern Shores Elementary. When she entered kindergarten, I was so nervous because she could not read and other students had the privilege of learning to read in preschool. IN 3 MONTHS after attending kindergarten my daughter was reading books! I could not believe it! I tried to teach her myself and couldn't do it, so I give her K teacher well deserved accolades. Her kindergarten teacher won Suffolk Teacher of the Year and she deserved it. I like how the school has many free and low cost activities like Family Fitness Night and Reading Night. The Suffolk Parks and Recreation (Rec) is attached to the school so before and after care is convenient and reasonable. The Rec also has low cost activities that my daughter has participated in like cheerleading and karate. The school is diverse and well run. I highly recommend Northern Shores Elementary.

After two years at a private school, we decided to enroll our son in public school at Northern Shores. We knew doctors, teachers and other professionals who choose to educate their kids here. They all shared positive comments with us. After one year and an incredibly positive experience for our child, we now wonder why we ever sent him to a private school. Northern Shores may not be perfect, but it's pretty darn good.

I have a child who attended Northern Shores for kindergarten, first and second grades. All three teachers were good, but her kindergarten teacher was excellent and very experienced. My one complaint is the concern that teachers have very little room to vary from the standard curriculum. Team teaching may be good for new teachers, but doesn't allow those with more experience to utilize it. As a whole, though, I've been very pleased with NSES.
