This is a great school, from what we have experienced so far. As the parent of a 10th grader who came into the Global Studies Academy in 9th grade, we were nervous about what the experience would be. I had heard rave reviews of the teachers and staff, and I have been pleasantly surprised about how true that has been. Despite some of the negative reviews, a student’s success depends on the classes they’re in. This is true for every high school out there. If a kid is in lower level classes, chances are there will be more issues with behaviors. So, I’d take the negatives with a grain of salt. For us, the teachers are highly responsive and proactive with communication. This is not the case for every school in Virginia Beach. We appreciate this so much.

This school was ok. My kid ended up meeting a really bad crowd here and going down a bad path so I’m not sure how to rate the school but it got really extreme and they just graduated them all early which I don’t think that was good to do early. I think the school could be good but they do have a big group of the bad crowds in there wanting to suck your kid into it and there’s nothing really the school can do about that I’m sure but they were vaping even in class there when the teacher wasn’t looking.

My grandson went here and graduated in 2019. The security was very lax. I tried to get the administration and SRO to make sure the only way to get back into the school after dismissal is going thru the main entrance. The gym door was a revolving in and out of students in extracurricular activities. Student would go up to door and knock and someone inside would open the door for them to enter.
Now grandson # 2 has been there for 3 years and still this is happening. I talked to Principal then he left and I spoke to new Principal and he assured me it would be rectified. I suggested putting a teacher there at the door and only let in students. SRO didn’t seem too interested.
So now he will be a Senior and I’ve told all that I’ve talked to, you are responsible for the safety of all these young men and women. I promise you if anything happens to my grandson because of your incompetence I will hold you personally responsible.
All the school shootings over the years and weapons in the schools. This door being a revolving door for a terrible incident to happen.

the school and academic institutions are great. the only problem i have with this school is they don’t take mental health seriously and almost 8/10 i would receive cold and soggy food. (cold fries, sometimes chicken. soggy bread, stale fries, stale bread, ect.) The Lunch system is very unorganized and many groups of students take it upon themselves to cut in front of everyone and anyone they want to. Lunch lines aren’t monitored. One time, i was standing in line very close to getting my food and a student cut in front of me. when i said something they turned around and shrugged. I went to talk to a councelor about my mental health and was seeking one on one counseling and they told me they didn’t provide counseling services on campus. they said “we can talk about academic issues and peer altercation but we don’t provide counseling.”

As a current senior in Tallwood high school, the teachers are amazing in teaching their classes and every student that comes here is taught effectively to be prepared for college! The teachers are also very patient with their students and stay after school for extra help when needed to ensure that every student is caught up and understands the material that they are taught about.

When I went Mr. Morgan was the principal, he was engaging with the students. A black man that was principle that was stern but fair.

My experience was awesome, I want my kids to go to this school. They have only improved the curriculum since I've graduated.

When our family got transferred to Virginia in 2015, we did a LOT of research on where we were going to live based on the schools in the area. We chose our house specifically because of Tallwood’s ratings. We were sorely disappointed.
About a month into our daughter’s 9th grade year, she came down with mono. I had emailed all of her instructors to get work for her, and provided medical documentation to the school about her diagnosis. I had only heard from one instructor to get work for her to do, so I went to see her guidance counselor the following week to get help. He also emailed all of her instructors, giving them a 3 day deadline to get work into the office. I was still missing anything from Science and Algebra.
The following week, I went to make an appointment with the principal or vice principal to discuss this matter, and was firmly instructed that I was not allowed to speak with either and that I was to take my issues up with guidance.
If my daughter missed any more school, she would have been failed from her classes due to excessive absences, even with the medical documentation I had provided. My husband, who was deployed at the time, and I had decided that our only option was to remove our daughter from school and start homeschooling her to keep her from failing out.
I went through the process of getting her removed from the school and getting her enrolled into homeschooling through the VB School Board. I received multiple calls from Tallwood school the week after removing her from the school, one even from the vice principal, who I wasn’t able to speak with earlier. They were all trying to get me to bring my daughter back to the school. Unfortunately, their actions were too little too late. I even received 6 letters that week from the school stating that my daughter had failed out of every one of her classes due to absences that had happened after I had pulled her out of the school.
It took me walking into the VB School Board administration office and filing a complaint against the school to get the phone calls and letters to stop. My husband and I are firm believers in the public school system, however, our hand was forced to homeschool our daughter. I have been homeschooling her for the past two years now, and she is thriving, however, that should have been a choice for my husband and I to make on our own, not to have our hand forced into.

My child has been going to this school for a couple yrs now. This was the first year my child had some problems. The problem was taken care of within days and have not had any other problems. Over all I am pleased with the school.

I am going to be a senior after the summer. I really love this school, much better then my middle school. The teachers are awesome and everyone is friendly. The teachers can be pretty funny too. I can never imagine going to another high school.

In Virginia Beach, High Schools have Academies attached to their HS. The students zoned for a specific HS go to that HS or they can test or apply to go to a different HS and be in their Academy.

Academies attached to HS are:
1) OCEANLAKES HS- Math Science Advanced Academy – students must test to get in
2) PRINCESS ANNE HS- International Baccalaureate (IB) Advanced Academy- students must test to get in
3) FIRST COLONIAL HS- Legal Studies Academy- students accepted by application
4) BAYSIDE HS- Health Science Academy- students accepted by application
5) SALEM HS- Performing Arts Academy- students accepted by application
6) TALLWOOD HS- Global Studies Academy- students accepted by application
7) LANDSTOWN HS- Technology Academy- students accepted by application

Schools without Academies are:
1) COX HS
2) KELLAM HS
3) GREEN RUN HS
4) KEMPSVILLE HS
