Absolute horrendous first impression through the office staff. New parent and had no idea where to park or go into the building. I got screamed at as soon as I reached the office because I came in through the wrong entrance.
I came into the entrance we went through for orientation because there were several other cars parked there and other people coming in and out of the building.

this school gives us absolutely no rights I go there and instead of targeting people who bully or hurt people people who vape in the bathroom or even people who actually need help they target innocent people who just want their free speech to apply to computers too they have blocked many sites and stuff that we need to learn and some teachers even block studentvue when we're supposed to do missing work so we dont know if we have missing work and I feel like this school is not really a good school and they use ai slop to teach and the science teachers use ai videos and I just don't feel this schools right for me in any of these categories

If you can avoid your child going to this school, do it!!!! It is awful! The administration is SEVERELY lacking and could care less about the well being of students. My son has had nothing but issues since he started here last year. It was so bad I had to put him in therapy then tried to out of zone with a formal letter from the therapist and they refused to let him leave. The bullying is off the charts and when a bullying investigation was opened for my son I never even heard back. DON’T SEND YOUR CHILD HERE!!!!

My friend was told to cut himself and bullied staff didn’t care for him at all. Also the kids there smell horrid and there are fights often, the patty meat is raw as well as fatty, and there are Broken leaks, the staff favor students quite often as well which puts a bad idea that some students are worth more than others, most of the staff is quite poor it feels like as my best friend was being bullied relentlessly with no help from staff.

This school is absolute hell!! Most teachers are nice, but other staff members will pick on you for every single little thing! This school is not very diverse for children who are different or simply just new. Dress code is very sexist and mainly target innocent students, specifically girls. If you have some sort of development then they will dress code you for that, which is just body shaming! They never respond to complaints such as things like bullying. The students here are nothing but bullies. They never follow 504 plans or excuse you from class when you really need to. They also play favorites.

You should not enroll your child in this school. There is so much that happens here like fights and half the teachers don't even teach. The lunches are horrible and students have gotten sick from it.This school has to be one of the worst schools in Virginia.

The administration is the worst! Punishment is handed out before a thorough investigation is done. There is a revolving door of asst principals that appear to do everything because you NEVER hear from the principal! It's very odd!

I too heard this school's reputation and wanted to give it a fair chance and can honestly say well into the 2nd year that what you hear is unfortunately accurate!

Utterly disappointed!

I went to Larkspur years ago and based on the comments I realized that some of the issues I experienced are still prevalent today. After being able to analyze my experience psychologically and sociologically, I realized that there are maybe some systemic issues that cause a lot of fighting at Larkspur Middle. I think the dividing up each grade into teams creates sort of like a gang like mentality. Certain teams thought they were better than others because they are treated better than others. Some teams had the "advanced" courses and were always at the beginning of the hall, and then the classes at the far ends of the hall always had all the rowdy kids and the core classes. These divisions created like a caste system and that coupled with all the changes people are going through during that time is the perfect catalyst for constant conflicts to occur. This could be seen when occasionally classes walking single file from opposite ends of the hall would cross each other, you could see and feel the animosity. During bell changes because there were so many people and those barriers are broken, that is when the fights would always break out and it would be so easy to start and as soon as it did a whole mob would form and that would be the story for the day. I was always a good student, always in the advanced classes and cool with pretty much everyone but even I had 2 conflicts that almost resulted in full blown fights. It's just something about the shared mentality of the school that brings out the dog in you.

This school is horrible. The principal does not do a good job of following up and the assistant principal is even worse. My sons first year here he got into two fights back to back. He never starts anything but I definitely condone him standing up for himself. I’ve gone to get him early from school a few times and staff can be seen running down the hall to break up fights. This school lacks the proper leadership, guidance, and structure. I agree with another parents post. Clean house and get staff that really care and have a good influence. So glad this is my sons last year here!

If I could rate this school zero stars I would. Prior to my child starting here, I heard the horror stories about this school. I wanted to give it a fair chance as this is the school my student is zoned for. I’ve regretted my decision since about two months in. The principal is cold and far removed from the issues with the school. He doesn’t follow up on concerns and has made it a habit to pass off such tasks to his subordinates to handle. He comes off as if he can’t be bothered about the matters within his own school. The bullying culture is outrageous here. The school was even featured in the local area news for the violence amongst the students with fighting. It has gotten so bad (especially the fighting) that my student refuses to even use the restroom out of fear of being attacked. I will most definitely be transferring my child out of this school next year. I would never recommend this middle school to anyone unless the district does a clean sweep, starting with the head of administration there

My son came to this school with an IEP because of his ADHD. Every school that he attends, they accommodate his needs for his way of learning. In this school I've worked with the school learning disability specialist, the counselor, and teachers. We have a great communication relationship. In my opinion, any student can strive if they want to take the opportunity. The motivation, the will to strive for better than just a passing grade, the will to work harder, should be presented to the student not solely on the school, but also on the parents/guardians. I'm my son's number one cheerleader and motivational speeches are vital for all children especially in middle school. I would say, this school lacks in the homework department, so I give my son homework by watching YouTube videos or printouts just to keep his mind fresh.

Did not experience any issues with the teachers.

How can this be created in students when the staff lacks it.

Posted: October 24, 2019

The Principal should be looked at as a leader......he is horrible.

Posted: October 24, 2019

They use “bandaids” to get the student by in school when they should offer programs to help students.

Posted: October 24, 2019

If your child is the one being bullied he/she will get in trouble. The principal does absolutely nothing, he will put the blame on your child.

worst teachers i’ve ever encountered in my life. they have favorites and gossip worse than the kids. they also put labels on the kids as the “good kids” and “bad kids” so if you get a new teacher you won’t have the chance to show your true self because they already have an image in their mind.

I think that the Leaderships communication is effective as we are always getting the calls “Good evening Larkspur parents this is principle Manugo....”, so that is nice. As far as other things determing their leadership being effective I cannot say for sure.

Posted: March 30, 2019

I can only speak on the experience my family has had with our child, but so far so good. Our child is advanced, so they placed them in advanced classes. They push our child to achieve at a higher level than what our child wants to perform at, and I believe this is good. Our child would love nothing else than to sit back, and cruise through life if allowed. The teachers don’t allow that, and push them when/if they become dormant in their schoolwork.

Posted: March 30, 2019

My child constantly tells me about bullying issues at the school, but hearing that from a child is like pouring water through a cup with a thousand holes in it. Children at this age tend to try to be manipulative to gain towards their benefit. So, I cannot accurately comment on this because I only have the he said/she said instances.

Posted: March 30, 2019

My child does not really have too much homework. Mostly they work at their own pace, if they do fall behind, that is when the homework comes into play. They manage their own time, schoolwork, and when they are ready they test out of the module, they do. This is our first year at Larkspur, and our child is in advanced classes so it may be different if your child is in other programs. No experience to go off of, but it seems to work pretty efficiently.

Posted: March 30, 2019

We have pretty good communication between our child’s teacher, and if/when something happens she informs us right away. She also gives us weekly updates via email on how/where our child stands in her curriculum, and if she is stagnant in a module.

Posted: March 30, 2019

I think overall my childs attitude has became worse in this year, but I believe that also has to do with her age, and new friends. I do not think it should be the Middle schools responsibility to develop these character traits in our children. These start at home, from the parents, and you can definitely tell that some families rely on the school to teach their young ones these values that should be taught at home. Unfortunately the untaught rub off on the taught, and create a confused teenager that loses their own self respect and moral values along the way.

Posted: March 30, 2019

Overall I would rate it pretty decent. I think academically it sits pretty good given todays unique learning environment. I do enjoy how they have all the grade levels split into their own wings with little to no contact between the grade level. I do think that does render the necessary social skills that children today require, but with a school this large I think it is deemed necessary as to prevent any issues associated with the last question. Communication from the staff is great, and the learning opportunity is there if your child wants it.

Terrible. Constant fighting and bullying. Kids have to teach themselves basically with the computer based program they use. Single sport team for entire school for most sports, so very few kids get to participate, particularly younger grades. Many of the extracurricular clubs such as STEM, kids have to apply to and once again very few are given the chance to participate. If you have a choice, do NOT send your child here.

0 stars! This school should be shut down! From the teachers playing on their phones during class, to my kids getting bullied in the locker room/cafeteria/hallway/and bus, there is nothing good about this school. When I have a meeting with their leadership, what comes out of it? “We can’t control every moment..:maybe you need to teach your kids to stick up for themselves.” Are you serious? PLEASE NEVER SEND YOUR KIDS TO TBJA SCHOOL!

I am a 7th grader at Larkspur currently, and guidance and bullying is a real issue here, not just with kids but teachers also get bullied on a daily basis. There are many fights throughout the year also and some teachers are careless and can be at times frustrating to work with and to learn with even though they are supposed to be helpful. Unfortunatley, most of the guidance department truthfully, is horrendous. It is very hard to change schedules or get information about next year because they are either too busy or are never around (they usually never visit classrooms either unless it is mandatory). The best guidance counselor that I have been around would be Mr. Schober because he is very creative and is fun to be around, so I would recommend him. The gifted department is very good though, and sometimes you can eat lunch with them while doing many fun activities. Overall, this school is like most schools, just needing to be a little more involved with the students.

Unfortunately I have to make a negative post about this school!! I am completely disgusted with the way children are treated here. While I understand that some Middle Schoolers are just plain bad, I do NOT agree with intimidation and humiliation to the extent of making a child cry! I have witnessed this TWICE this year once on a personal level and then again just waiting in the carpool line in the morning!! I am outraged that this school is bullying students who came from Elementary Schools where they LOVED going to school and learning!! Something needs to change!!!

I'm an 8th grade student at Larkspur Middle, this is my last year at this school. I transferred late last year from Portsmouth Public Schools because of bullying. Moving had to be one of the best choices I've made and attending this school was even better. Yes, there are still bullies etc, every school has them, you honestly just have to find your 'group' of people and you will go many places. The administration at Larkspur are very good people, although from my point of view they do overreact on somethings, but if your parent talks to them in a respectful manor & you as a student talk to them in a respectful way and explain yourself they tend to look at the decision. Regardless, I do recommend this school.

I love my school, it's great! I've seen negative reviews, but that's how it is when you're this young. You just have those days. I personally don't think anything wrong with the school. When something breaks, they get it fixed relatively quickly. The teachers are okay as long as you're a good student. The one thing I think the school has a problem with is how they deal with discplinary action. I've seen countless times where they've made a bad call on suspension or even expulsion. This is mainly at the fault of the higher administration. Other than that, I love the school, and I don't await the day where I go to highschool. Keep on rocking lions! :)

I am a student here. This school honestly still treats us like children. I gave it 2 because they try.

Larkspur Middle School is a great school. It all depends on what team your on. In sixth grade, I was in the giraffes which is the best team, or smartest team, to be on. The teachers were great, which was especially important since I was taking all advanced classes. The teachers didn't just pass or fail you, they made sure you understood and could be competent in the subject. I love larkspur and some of my relatives went there before I did and said the same.

Posted: April 2, 2013

This school doesn't even deserve a star but I had to give it at least one. :( My son attends this school. It is by far the worst school we have ever had our son in. The teachers cannot control their classes, they do not care about their students, and the guidance department is horrible. I would NOT recommend this school to anybody. They do nothing to those that bully kids.
