Surprised with how many good reviews this school has, the staff is pretty much don't care for special needs children and don't care to hire the right staff to do so. This is the kind of school you'd wanna keep your child away from due to the gossip that they hear from the teachers. Its like everyone is for themselves here and not a team working together.

This principal is by far the best. There is always something the children are doing. Teachers are caring and great. Great year!

When my oldest went thru College Park she always had homework. Some years she had hours of homework, other years she had what I considered a reasonable amount. My younger child had a few years where no homework was assigned, then in fourth grade regular/daily homework was assigned. Unfortunately my child struggled with developing strong homework habits because of the prior years of not having any homework. This experience may not reflect how all children would respond to a similar change.

Overall, my children have had wonderful, caring, creative, and supportive teachers. They have improved from the beginning of the year they the end, and they seem to come home happy and satisfied.

Every morning rain or shine I see Dr. White and the staff assisting children during the morning drop-off. But I also see Dr. White at most school events, etc. He high-fives students and greets many by name. I appreciate his constant visibility.

I have put one child through College Park, I have another almost through, and two more starting in the fall. I believe in the school's current leadership and in the passion and hard work of their teachers. There are many activities and events planned throughout the year. There seems to be a healthy attendance at several of the events. However, school staff cannot force parents to continue their child's education at home. Unfortunately, this school seems to have an above average number of students lacking parental support whose state test scores continuously drag down the school's averages.

I believe this school deserves a higher rating than is reflected on this page. I hope their Great Schools rating rises much higher over the next year or two.

My son is in 4th grade. Hey started at this school in Kindergarten and was only there for a few months, then we had to move, and now we're back. In Kindergarten, his teach at College Park praised him, said he was one of the best in her class. Then we moved and we had to switch to Kempsville Elementary. Less than 2 weeks there and his teacher recommended testing for ADHD. After all testing was said and done, turns out he needed glasses and is ADHD (he is now in therapy and on medication -- works extremely well for him). Now that we're back here at College Park and his meds are stable, I see this school for what it is; seriously lacking. The standards are low. I look at my son's great grades and I can't help but not feel excited because I know if we were at a better school, his grades wouldn't be so great. His teacher not only took 2+ weeks to read his Section 504 plan, but has failed miserably at communication (something she boasted she was excellent at during the open house). She waited till the very last minute to schedule parent/teacher conferences and then when I finally had to agree to a phone conference (I'm a single mom with strict work hours), she keeps literally ignoring me.
Then there's the students themselves. I utilize the after school program through Parks and Rec (have been for years). Almost every week (was almost every day), but son is EXTREMELY upset due to bullying. 2 staff for a large amount of kids of all age groups. My son has been physically, mentally, and verbally abused by children, and very little has been done. They can't seem to keep them separate, and then they twist my words and flat out lie. This is the only school we have had issue at in all his years at now 3 different Virginia Beach schools.
I'm going to do everything possible to have him in a different school next year. I am so fed up, and we're not even half way through.

The Team at College Park set positive examples as role models for our kids and they start with their leader, Dr. White and follow suite from the top down. This inspirational connection is so vital to the success and motivation of kids today. I can say my son is very much inspired, love his teachers and look forward to returning to school everyday!

It starts with the Vision/Mission Statement that the kids recite from memory that instill that sense of belonging, purpose and self-esteem boost to the daily Parent-Teacher interactions with the kids.

They now inspire the children unlike complaints from previous yearly experience. The younger teachers that are now at college park have found an instrumental professional connection with today's youth...MILLENNIALS!

My kid attended this school from Pre-K (2010) up to first grade where I could send him out of zone due to the old administration. Since the "bad apples" were removed from this school, the NEW and improved administration has turn things around to a complete 180 since the 2015 school year! Since Dr. Sterling White took the reins over as Principal and brought in his "A-Team" of teachers with him, the school has made an astronomical change for the better. College Park Elementary began soaring to the top academically! The proof is in the pudding from the 2015 SOL test scores to the distinguished student grades after just 1 year of reform. Upon discovering all of this great info I immediately brought my son back from his out of Zone at Salem Elementary and re-enrolled him back at College Park Elementary. Though my son misses his friends at Salem, he now has fell in Love with College park and inspired beyond belief! This has been one of the greatest decisions I've made as a parent which makes me sad to leave Virginia.

My child's experience at College Park Elementary has been stellar thus far. She just ended her kindergarten year, and I am thoroughly satisfied. The low rating would concern any parent at first glance. However, I personally witnessed my daughter and her classmates excel in reading and mathematics, and the concern easily diminished. In regards to teacher effectiveness, by the end of the school year 2015, she was reading on a second grade level. Virginia Beach Public schools has a preset expectation for kindergarteners to read on a level 3 by the end of the school year. The lowest rated child who started school not even knowing sounds and letters ended at a level 8, while others averaged between 12 and 16. As College Park is a Title 1 school, the students have access to additional learning tools and activities to assist in their progress. The school hosted events such as Math and Literacy Night, Science and Technology Night, and provided all students with free online books. To engage the community and parental involvement, the school hosted Family Fun and Fitness nights, Breakfast with Santa, and a Talent Showcase. There were many other events that we were available to encourage student, teacher and parental involvement. To that point, if there is anything negative to be said in this review, it is more about the administrative inconsistencies parental involvement and less about the teachers. I volunteered weekly to assist with various scheduled activities throughout the school. The purpose was to show up for my child and any other child who did not have a parent available. It will always be easier to lay sole blame on teachers when children do not excel as expected. However, the absence of parental involvement was not only noticeable, it was shameful. I read a review written earlier this month that mentions Principal Wynn, who left College Park in the summer of 2014. As inaccurate reviews can direct a person's opinion, the review author must not be a current student's parent. If they are, please see the aforementioned comment on the lack of parental involvement. To the point of administrative inconsistency, I believe with the new team of Dr. White and Mrs. Fonville will be amazing. I have always maintained a village mentality for my child an other relatives. The teachers, staff and administrators seem to have that same mentality. We will return for 1st grade.

The amount of time a teachers can teach effects the amount of information a student can learn. However this is the problem at College Park. Students are so noisy and disruptive no learning is going on. NO WONDER THEY FAILED THEIR SOL'S AGAIN!!!!!

This school needs to be shut down. Students are NOT learning here. I have never been in a school this noisy before. The students were in charge here. I witnessed bullying, aggression and acts that would not be tolerated at other schools. When I asked teachers about this they said it was standard operating procedures, and they were dissuaded from sending students to the office because each time a child is referred to the office a record is kept of the offence and how many times certain behaviors happen. The administration says it makes the school look bad to parents if there are a lot of offences!

My daughter has come home 3 times this year with lice! Everytime I find it I keep her home and immediately call the school nurse.now she has lice...again!! I called the nurse and she said to me " I'm not sure what you expect me to do about it" . I expect you to do your job and follow protocol! It was clear they do not check the children Nor send a note home to the parents making them aware of an outbreak! I called the principal and demanded they check every student in that class, call those parents and send a note home with every student in the school discussing the outbreak. The principal didn't ask the teachers name!.Other issues are we have a prepaid card for her lunches and usually receive an email stating that she is getting low on funds. Sometimes we do sometimes we don't. On days that she runs out of money they give her a cheese sandwich....that's right bread and cheese and we have to back pay for a full lunch while other students whose parents" can't afford" to feed their children received free full lunches. Once I forgot to put a drink in her lunchbox and they told her she couldn't buy a drink! Completely unacceptable!

I have my two kids in this school and I must say it is an amazing school with such wonderful staff!!!!! You not only feel so secure with having your child in your school but the education they receive is phenomenal and the teachers are remarkable !!!! College Park Elementary is by far one of the greatest schools... in my eyes the best school by far. Thank You Mrs Wynn for all you !

I have my 2 kids in this school right now, and another one graduated 3 years ago. I must say, that my experience with this school is very positive. All my kids have always had passed/advanced on their SOL's. The teachers I know are very dedicated and helpful. Bullying has never been tolerated. Since classes are small manageable, they know their students and those who are prone to bully and trouble.

Great school and the teachers and staff are very considerate to kids with IEP'S and delays. My only two concerns are; 1) Equal disapline with others students and listening to the student when they're getting picked on. For NO one deserves to be bullied. 2) Adaquate SAFE parking. I understand that they're building a new school behind the current one, however there is really no safe parking for the staff and the parents. ---Thank you.

Students have continiouslyfailed SOL's. Teachers and administration allows bullying. I have encounted problems for my disabled child. She come off of the bus crying or almost crying. I HATE this school.
